Why Hardly Anyone In Israel Is Allergic To Peanuts
Following is a transcript of the video:
The U.S. has an epidemic on its hands. Peanut allergies. Between 1997 and 2008, the number of American children with a peanut allergy has tripled. And today, an estimated 1.8 million kids in the U.S. have one. That's larger than the entire population of Philadelphia. And the U.S. is not alone. The UK, Canada, and Australia have seen a similar rise in child peanut allergies. But, that's not the case for other countries like China, Thailand, Korea, the Philippines, and Israel.
So, what do these countries have that the U.S. doesn't? In Israel, there is a joke that the first three words out of every toddler's mouth are: abba, which means dad, ima, which means mom, and Bamba. Bamba is a popular peanuty snack. An estimated 90% of Israeli families buy it on a regular basis. And guess what? The peanut allergy rate in Israel is 1/10 the rate that it is in the UK. And in China and Thailand, many children eat peanut rice porridge for breakfast. And wouldn't you know it? Peanut allergies are relatively low there too.
But this could be a coincidence, right? Thank goodness we have the researchers at King's College London. They recruited 640 infants 4 to 10 months old who were at risk of developing a peanut allergy. Half of the kids in the study ate peanut snacks regularly. Whereas the other half were told to avoid peanuts entirely.
Then when the kids were 5 years old, they were brought in for one final experiment. All of them were instructed to eat some type of peanut protein. Of the kids who ate peanut snacks regularly since infancy, 3.2% had developed a peanut allergy. But the kids who avoided peanuts altogether, were much worse off. More than 17% of them had developed an allergy to a nut that they had never consumed. That means they were six times more likely to develop a peanut allergy than kids who regularly ate peanuts. Of course, this is just one study. But if you know how allergies work, it begins to make sense.
When someone with a peanut allergy encounters a peanut for the first time, their immune system kicks into overdrive. In this case, it sees the peanut as a threat. And it produces antibodies in anticipation for a future encounter. So the next time this person eats a peanut, antibodies activate an immune response which the person experiences as an allergic reaction.
Scientists aren't sure why some people experience reactions and others don't. But they think that early exposure can certainly help at-risk infants. And luckily, allergies aren't always set in stone. In a clinical trial earlier this year, doctors recruited children with peanut allergies. They gave them a small dose of peanut powder and slowly increased the dose over time. Sure enough, the children's immune systems became accustomed to the powder and nearly all of them were able to build up a tolerance to it.
This process, called desensitization, is a way of tricking your immune system. And it could, if used correctly and safely, become a way to treat children who have a mild reaction to peanuts. And although results have been promising so far, these treatments are not a cure. What's more, scientists suspect that genetics may also play a role in allergy development.
So, before you take matters into your own hands and start feeding your babies peanuts, talk to a doctor and make sure that you're in the clear. After all, like everything in life, peanuts should be enjoyed in moderation.
Ok so if you don't want a peanut allergy just eat peanuts regularly

Tldr: expose kids to peanuts to reduce allergies
You can become allergic later in life even if you eat it regularly, though.
No, this is incorrect. I have an anaphylactic allergy and will literally die.
Like the video said, talk to a doctor first. I feel like they should've brought up the severe kinds of allergies in this video too. I only knew about the kind that causes anaphylactic shocks (causes choking and stuff, literally lethal like they said, needs immediate treatment) in regards to nut allergies, though luckily I'm not allergic to them myself, but that's probably something simple exposure couldn't fix even in babies. As a rule though, especially for less (or non-)lethal things like dog allergies, letting your little kids experience the allergens (particles causing the allergy) early on should reduce the risk.
Exposure to peanuts as a baby is why I have allergies in the first place.

I’m Israeli and I ate peanuts from the moment I could eat solid food . In fact , my favorite snack as a kid was bamba ! When I was five I went into anaphylactic shock because of peanuts , and seemingly overnight became deadly allergic to peanuts and still am to this day. At least in my case , I regularly ate peanuts and still became allergic . In Israel people are way less cleanly then in the states , people don’t have a problem eating things that fell on the floor / don’t always wash their hands before eating etc . I truly believe the allergies have more to do with the cleanliness rather than being exposed to peanuts ... at least in my case !
So much bull****, really. Just speak for yourself. Most of the Israelis eat food from the floor?
Being 'less clean' is a matter of character, not nationality.
I think this explanation is way too simplistic to account for all the different ways the allergies can suddenly appear and just as mysteriously disappear some time later for the same foods, regardless of the introduction age.
And this explanation for the US is particularly questionable, since peanuts are a part of the staple diet in either original nut form or processed as peanut butter. The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is one of American's favorite snacks and obviously the peanut processed into butter form makes it easy to consume even before the development of teeth. So the fact that this food is withheld from children now, seems to me like an effect (a precaution) than a cause.
There are many countries where peanuts are not processed into butter or cooking oil and so the child would have no way of consuming it until becoming older and capable of chewing nuts and yet the problem of peanut allergy is not manifested on the scale as in United States.
Some people have said that the hygiene hypothesis can be the reason for increasing allergies, but that's usually applied to being exposed to a dirtier environment and not necessarily to food because if something is too clean, the body doesn't get accustomed to it. Some allergies, however seem to just be an error in the body and almost unavoidable. There could also be a genetic component as well.
I was thinking hygiene had something to do with it when the video started 🤔
Oh by the way it’s Palestine 😂
Exposure does help prevent allergies, but some unlucky people still get them, like the 3.2% in the peanut exposed group in this study.
My mother developed an allergy to most raw/unprocessed fruit at age 21 despite regularly eating fruit her whole life. Genetics can stink like that.
Exposure for those at risk should definitely be used, though, because it could save many of those people a lot trouble, even if it won't help all of them.
Which is higher than the percentage of people with peanut allergies ANYWHERE. Less than 10% of people develop ANY food allergy. Peanuts aren't even the most common allergen.
I have a similar problem. I get throat irritation from some raw fruits, some nuts (not peanuts though), and soy milk (not soy sauce or tofu though). Very strange how specific these problems can be.
@@arfym2581 the study was not a study done on a general child population - it was done on children AT RISK of developing a peanut allergy (babies/children with egg allergies or severe eczema are a lot more likely to develop a peanut allergy). That's why the percentage of children with peanut allergies is higher than it would be in the general population.
Yes, because allergies are turned out to be also genetics. If a parent has allergies then there's a high chance that the kids also has allergies.
Bamba is seriously the best snack ever. It’s amazing!

What has peanuts in it that any kid would want to eat at a birthday party? I always just wanted chocolate cake, and ice cream, if I'm lucky.
Slimiefish No as long as I didn’t eat any of the peanut products.
You pronounced Ima (mum) wrong. The 'I' needs to sound like it's in the middle of a word as opposed to it sounding like the word eye. So it needs to sound like eema.
Exposure can also cause you allergies. This is often what happens when one gets stung by a bee, and it's certainly what happened to me with sesame since I became allergic after years of early exposure to the seeds.

I have an allergy to bee stings. So can I just get stinged daily and it will go away?
Actually that's how allergists treat severe reactions to bee stings. Bi-weekly shots of tiny amounts of venom over the course of several years so that an individual won't die immediately from a sting, but rather, have enough of a small window for treatment to said sting.
Bamba is the baby food that everyone eats from adults to stoners to the elderly. Btw mom in Hebrew is pronounced "ee-ma" (Ima-אמא)
How come the boy at 3:13 looks so much like he has a peanut allergy? Lol. Like, I didn't even think that there was such a thing as a stereotype for people who had peanut allergy, but that kid looks exactly like that stereotype

Genetic, I guess.
Same. I was born with a peanut allergy. Since my older brother had a peanut allergy it makes it highly likely that the next child will have one as well.
I’m allergic to all tree nuts. I used to be mildly allergic to peanuts as a kid, and was rarely exposed to it because NYC schools (like other schools in US) have a strict “no peanut” policy in their cafeterias, for kids who have allergies.
But as I got older I’d start to eat PB&J sandwiches etc, would experience mild itching but the symptoms would subside over the years until a few years ago when I just stopped having a reaction. So I’m not allergic to peanuts anymore! I theorized that if I tried that with the other nuts too in early childhood years (I was equally as allergic to tree nuts as I was to peanuts) I might’ve been able to diminish my reaction to them, too. (Might’ve)
Nice progress.
Bamba is seriously the best. And it's ee-ma. Not i-mma.

3:30 this works SOMETIMES. I have done something similar to treat my mild seasonal allergies where they would give me a needle every week for a long period of time. It took about of year, but nothing changed. For my peanut allergy, they cannot do this since my reaction to even the smallest amount of peanut can be lethal.
The reason why 3rd world countries dont have allergies in general is because they dont use as much pesticides as 1st world countries. Your body begins to reject the pesticide and associates it with the food you are eating.
Cloud Cover that's not how it works. And many third world countries use pesticides that are banned in most first world countries.

I can 100% confirm this. So when me and my brother (we both have severe peanut allergies) were infants, the general idea was to prevent giving your kids allergens. Five years later, when my sister was born, the idea was to give them the allergens at a young age. It's been almost seven years and both me and my brother developed our allergies at around age three--so my sister is pretty much guaranteed safe. Kinda wish medicine had advanced a bit when I was born, but oh well :/
I just got an allergic reaction by watching this video.

Then what about the babies who born with allergy?
Question ???
I wasn’t allergic to dairy when I was younger but as I got older and had dairy regularly I became allergic, why?
(Also I miss chocolate)
it's lactose intolerance, dairy contains lactose, and lactose is complex sugar.
Nagaraj Bhat oh honey no, there is a big difference between just lactose intolerance and dairy allergies
Nagaraj Bhat It can literally mean the difference between life and death
@@cylyte2436 ohh don't know about that!
*I didn’t know that
Never met anyone who’s allergic to peanuts 🥜!
Cece Gomez you must of never met anyone then.
@@Whoareyoucalling haha funny you say that, cause you're lowkey right. I've never felt more exposed in my life.
BalthazarTheGreat
Are you joking right? ive met alot of people and no one of them is allergic to peanuts
Yes, I’m allergic to dairy and I eat a little bit of dairy every couple of weeks, and increase it slowly. I think I’m getting better
Exposure is the key to almost everything when it comes to parenting. When one has anxiety and is exposed to what is causing the uncomfortable feeling the anxiety is lessened until it goes away almost completely.
We MUST stop coddling our children in the ways we have been. Trying to keep anything from happening to your child prevents ANYTHING from happening. They then end up in your basement at 30. 😉
And if you already have the peanut allergy?
Just eat tons of peanuts XD
Nougat Kekz that’s one way to die
@@kevinpeters9756 suicide mission, one peanut is enough to stop someone's breathing, 2 or more can result in blood not pumping through the brain. If you still continue to eat more even though your brain is dead, you'll have skin peeling off without even trying, blood clots, and other stuff including rash but that's no biggie. Eventually death. Unless its treated well.
Not sure if it work for the adult or not but for kids who already have peanut allergy 3:08
@@user-uw4uv3cy7l Well that's the joke... actually.

I'm sorry its just doesn't ring a bell
Are you nuts?
I eat 200 grams of peanut butter a day
I'd feel like starving (assuming I'd stick to my calorie budget... That's like 1200kcal for the PB alone)
springs that's exactly right. I'm currently eating 4,500 calories everyday to gain weight and I need to pack on calories some how haha
@@tamarak.9828 how many calories do you eat a day?
I’m half israeli and half finnish and I have tons of allergies, including nuts, but I’ve never had an anaphylactic shock from them, just a little sore throat. My other allergies are much worse.
I am work in hospitality industry in Sydney Australia I think people here have too much food allergic issues. Such as peanut, tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, gluten, dairy,,, I am from China I barely heard anyone have food allergies problems there.
When I found out what happens to my friend when she eats peanuts she said that she gets inflated and red lips.
Then I said to her
Well keep eating peanuts so you can get Kylie Jenner lips, (she didn't do it)
Bambaaaa! It's yummi

BAMBA IS MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!! Proud Israeli! 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱
Middle Easterners love peanuts lol. Its not strange. I love peanuts and pistachios

My science teacher once called peanut allergies a white people disease.
The way you mangled the words abba and ima...
My nutrition textbook I had last year said otherwise. It claimed that allergies have a higher likelihood of development if a food if given to an infant before they are experienced enough with simpler foods to properly digest them. I can't remember the exact details about the order they recommended foods be introduced, but I do remember it saying each food that presents a food allergy risk should be introduced by the time the baby is 1 1/2 years old (as in the each food should be introduced gradually over a period of months extending to 16 months). Infants should start off with standard baby food for their first few months, then I think softer cereals can be introduced in addition to the baby food, then hard cereals, then select foods not presenting an allergy risks, and then introduced each risk-presenting foods incrementally by age 1 1/2. Would have to do my research again to make sure this is right, but I think I got the main idea for when I have a child of my own.
Definitely trust that more than old theories
When was it written?
This still supports the idea that you can help prevent allergies from exposure... You expose them to food in infancy, in a certain order and their bodies learn how to process them.
Oh, and I found the source for the book I read this from:
Byrd-Bredbenner, Carol, Gaile Moe, Donna Beshgetoor, Jacqueline Berning, and Danita Kelley. Wardlaw's Perspectives in Nutrition: A Functional Approach. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Education, 2019. Print.

Peanut allergies are rare in Africa too, because many of our dishes used ground up nuts or peanut oil.
Narrator tries to say "abba."
Me: "lol, good effort, but your pronunciation is off."
Narrator tries to say "ima."
Me: *spits out water I wasn't even drinking* "THAT'S OT EVEN THE SAME WORD."
