- The Guiding Plight - Marsha Clark
This "Guiding Light" parody was written and produced by actress/writer Marsha Clark, who played Hillary Bauer on the popular Emmy award-winning CBS soap opera. Over a period of 3 months the entire cast and crew pitched in to swiftly and surreptitiously tape the scenes at the studio in the few spare moments available when the actual show finished taping for the day. The bogus commercials were taped at Marsha's Manhattan apartment and at various locales around New York City.
The cast enjoyed tweaking their storylines in Marsha’s satirical script. The spoof was originally intended for the enjoyment of the cast and crew, but now soap fans have discovered it on the internet after an unauthorized version was posted online without proper accreditation. Hope you enjoy this authorized version!

Boy does this ever bring me back to that time when daytime soaps were actually well scripted, had terrific actors, and true creativity. GL 1979-85 or so was the absolute zenith for GL and soaps in general. While the masses may have been watching GH, those of us in the know understood that the real action was going on in Springfield!!
I loved GL 1983/84 with Eli Simmons who tried to kill all familys for their sins of their fathers.. Every Family and character was somehow involved during that time and was the best Script ever and next to that we had Beth/Mindy/Rick/Philip and that rape stuff and Ross campagne story.. Good ol days
@@GLBizzie honey, Eli Sims.
"Ask Rita!" BAHAHAHAHA! And the skit with Alan, Diane, Jackie, and Hope - that's classic!
I think Bert and Rita's scene is a parody of an actual scene they'd had a few months earlier, where Rita has a heart-to-heart with Bert about her relationship with Ed (discussing your sex life with your mother-in-law...CRINGE!) . In the actual scene, Rita says, "I'm trying to be a good wife to Ed", and Bert responds, "Rita, I think you're a WONDERFUL wife". (Charita Bauer probably chocked on that line! LOL). Here, she says, "I'm trying to be a good wife", and Bert responds, "trying" LOL. The scene with Alan, Diane, Jackie and Hope, just using first names was a riot.
Omg! this was hilarical! My absolute favorites were Kathleen "Amanda" Cullen. I loved seeing her cut loose, and strut her stuff in the Vanderbilt jeans spoof, and Lenore "Rita" Kasdorf has natural comedic timing. Also, Sofia Landon was funny as hell. And Michael Zaslow, fuunnny! I would've loved to see Chris Bernau in more skits, I know he would be hysterical. Great send-up! Saturday Night Live couldn't have done better. Kudos!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
It's so great that GL was able to poke fun at themselves. And they did it well. The only soap that had the cajones to do so. Guiding Light, forever "The G.O.A.T.!
I love how game Charita Bauer was for this. Bert was always my favorite character and the scene with her and Rita is classic. Rita could have also asked Bert, "Why are you in my mother's house?" LOL
Marsha Clark was TV's best actress (tied with Charita Bauer). Her character Hillary was the greatest character ever to be foolishly wasted. Writer Pam Long (Hammer) DESTROYED the tentpole Bauer family in one year. Thank you, Gail Kobe. The show never recovered.
She the one that brought reva and the tulsa clan?
Classic GL died when the Texas team was brought in
Hilarious! My favorite was Sara’s internal monologue and what Bert says to Rita when she asks if she’s a good wife to Ed! Oh, also love when Bert rolls her eyes at Elizabeth! 😝
I have laughed this afternoon u til I’m almost hoarse. So so funny and well done. How I would have seen all the soaps of this time put this together! Bravo Marsha and your GL family!♥️♥️♥️💯
This Is a brilliant piece of parody!
GL made a tragic mistake by letting Marsha and Denise go from the show.
They added comic elements that was ne er replaced after they left.
Thank you, Marsha, for posting your work!
That "Guiding Light" parody is hilarious, but very touching. It was like "Mary Hartman." but quite insanely funny. The credits at the end, I wonder if they're like the same folks who worked on "Guiding Light"? Thanks, Marsha!
I wonder if this was a special April fool episode?🤡 😂🤣
From apples..?.....that makes it apple juice. Probably the best line ever from Lucille.
I like when the camera messed with Michael Zaslow at the last commercial.
They need shows like this - comedic soapers - on daytime TV in place of stupid courtroom and talk shows.
As well as SOAP was on in this era.
This was great. I was a big Guiging Light fan. I loved seeing all the actors again and it was a great parody. Good job.
I am in my glory. Thank you for posting. These vintage episodes of GL are priceless
OH, Marsha, this is hilarious.
Thanks for this. I was just out high school when you made this. I am watching this in 2023 and I am in an assisted living facility. Thanks for the laughs Marsha.
Oh wow. I just stumbled across quite a gem!
This is fun. Still miss GL and the residents of Springfield.
Well won't you at least drink your orange juice, I squeezed it myself. From apples. That was all we had. Then that makes it apple juice.
They should have made this an annual tradition and popped one of these out ever year.
Loved the spoof. Was a big GL fan in the late 70s-early 80s. This brought back a lot of memories. I remember all of the storylines parodies. Best of all, even someone who didn't watch GL can appreciate this. Thanks for posting, Marsha. This is great. PS: Hillary Bauer was one of my first tween crushes
This is absolutely hysterical!!! I’m sure it was terribly hard to keep a serious face and not break down laughing while doing this! Hope you have more you can post! 🤣🤣🤣😆😆😆
Love this Marsha a wonderful cast enjoyed it very much ❤thank you 🎉🎉🎉🎉
A great cast 1975 - August 1984 guiding light was on fire summer of 84
I have always enjoyed the humor the tacky style soaps present and to see this parody just makes it even more, well... I wish daytime still had this wonderful afternoon delight... thanks for sharing...
Katie, Katie, Katie.... everyone knows that Thrifty's brand vanilla ice cream is the best!
What a treasure! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
This is awesome! Thank you for sharing this!
I saw this years ago in 7 parts and always wanted to run into Marsha on the streets of NYC so I could tell her (you) how fantastic this is, so well done. The real comedic find is Millette Alexader - who saw that coming? and of course the line of the episode comes from Bert - another comedic find at 52:34. I also love the lengthy ending of the wonderfully hypnotic (and somewhat depressing I suppose) closing theme.
This is just brilliant! Thank you for posting it!
This has shades of Mary Hartman written all over it. I LOVE IT!
Shockingly Hilarious 🤣
Roger Thorpe in a commercial lol
Fabulous parody, bravo !.....hilarious
Took me 4 minutes to realize this is parody. Lol. This is the best

Nice to See Floyed BEFOEE his "Jailtime"...😂😂 Nice to see the show take down the fourth wall...!!
This gives me a whole new appreciation of Chris.
So funny. Loved it!
16:29 a P&G funniest commercial 😂
Ask Rita! It seems like this cast had a lot of fun on the set.
This is absolutely fabulous 😂😂😂
This is hilarious! A laugh a minute~!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
There are a few of us at least who watch the film Jack Frost just to see Marsh Clark in one of her finest performances.
John T. How’s about as the judge in Runaway Jury. Loved that!
Masterpiece
love it
This is great!

Wow. That was weird, strange, kind of funny. Kathleen Cullen was my favorite.

26:58 thanks 😁😂🤣
10:49 Poopy 🤣
Funny!
Did this actually air? I love it!
Pamela INGOLD No. Never aired.
Zaz!
38:48--I don't find making a mockery of a character's rape funny and 54:02 was just racist and sexist, and not even funny to make up for that fact.
I think you don't understand the parody at all-there was nothing racist or sexist about it.
Giving Ms. Clark the benefit of the doubt, Id say she was just making social commentary!
