As someone with a mental illness & fondness for dark humor in order to deal with it, I can totally understand why he thinks his jokes are funny. Especially the car accident one. It's all about the absurdity of life.
Also, remember that the one dude was singing "Bring in the Clowns' prior to everything going down. While everyone else watching wouldn't get it, Arthur (and by extension, we) experienced it.
*“I figure if you’re gonna have an origin story, you might as well make it multiple choice”.* The Joker, The Killing Joke The best part is that in the end you actually have no idea how much of what happened in the movie ACTUALLY happened. The whole movie could’ve just been a fantasy in Arthur’s head. It’s the part that this movie took as inspiration from The Killing Joke graphic novel when Joker says to Batman after we see his “origin story”. It’s why I almost wish we didn’t get a sequel because it could ruin the mystique of this movie.
15:00 Arthur could certainly argue self-defense, but there are two things that ruin the case. First of all, Arthur has a mental disorder, he most likely would have been rejected at every FFL dealer. He is basically in possession of an illegal weapon. Second of all, the actual self-defense. Arthur would have a good argument of self-defense against the first two "bullies." Chasing down the last fleeing man when his life is no longer in danger? Yeah no, that would immediately ruin his case.
I live in one of the states with some of the most stringent gun laws and really low gun crime rate, they don't actually check if you have mental health disorders. I have ones severe enough to classify as disabled and I can still get my LTC and purchase all the guns I want (that are legally allowed within my state). However, self-defense cases tend to almost never side with the person defending themselves here. You'd have to prove that you fled, locked yourself in a room, gave proper warning that you're armed, and then only fired once they had you cornered. Arthur wasn't cornered, even though he was stuck on the ground being stomped, so he probably wouldn't even win a self-defense case against the first two. Yes, my states laws are so heavily anti-gun that, as a gun owner, they'd prefer you die rather than defend yourself, lmao. I guess that's what happens when you conflate an object with "Evilness," though.
The film is set in the 80’s an era where anyone could walk into any venue with a weapon even concealed and not have a problem with it. It wasn’t until the late 90’s and early 2000s that security really stepped up with Columbine and 9/11 occurring.
Phoenix is absolutely AMAZING in this film! After Heath Ledger's version, I thought, nobody can do a better Joker than that! I still love The Dark Knight, but the darkness of Phoenix's version is next level! The story/writing is amazing too! I can't wait to see "Joker - Folie a' Deux"
BOTH were perfect for the movies they starred in. Ledger Joker would have been way too over the top for this movie but was perfection in The Dark Knight. He had to be able to fight Batman from the start. Joaquin's Joker slowly losing his mind fit this movie perfectly, but would have been a terrible version in The Dark Knight. Arthur telling Gary he's the only one who was ever nice to him, to me, is the most important moment in the film because it goes right to the heart of Arthur's existential tragedy: people really do underestimate the effect small and seemingly inconsequential acts of kindness have on us. Sometimes for certain people, simply smiling at someone with a genuine smile and saying hello can be the difference between a good day and a really bad one.

It CAN'T be canon. The age difference between Arthur and Bruce Wayne would have them fighting when Arthur was in his 60's. Also would there BE a Batman? In usual continuity Bruce's parents are killed by a mugger, here they're killed by a mob angry at the rich. Where would his motivation to fight crime come from? Sure, murder is a crime but the murderers motivations were not criminal. If anything an adult Bruce would "fight" the middle class.
One element of this film that I think doesn’t get a lot of attention is the musical score. It’s so dark and fits the tone perfectly. Hidur Guonadottir absolutely deserved her Oscar
Dealing with mental issues for a long time and needing medication this movie was really uncomfortable to watch. It's an amazing movie but not one I can watch again
The Joker has never had a definitive backstory. In Batman 1989 and Batman: The Animated Series (revealed in the Mask of the Phantasm movie), The Joker's backstory is that he was a mob enforcer. In The Dark Knight, he tells two different stories about how he got his scars. I think Joker's speech from Alan Moore's The Killing Joke best sums up The Joker's backstory across all mediums and iterations: "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" - Joker.
The only time he was ever given a DEFINITIVE backstop, was during the comic arc batman endgame, where it was revealed he'd been around since the 1800s, living off a highly corrupted Lazarus pit and becoming more insane with each use, and even in that we know nothing of hom from back then or before rhat, just he's been around and a boogeyman almost for 200 years
Supposedly this isn’t the Joker from Batman… “Joker” as the title was just for marketing purposes. This movie was a remake of Taxi Driver and/or King of Comedy
For more Robert De Niro as a stand up comic, you need to watch The King Of Comedy 1982 where he co-stars with Jerry Lewis. Lots of parallels to Joker 2019.
I remember seeing this in cinemas, and I was just blown away by it. Not like Murray when he “got what he f**king deserved!”. 37:17 I thought it was the most realistic depiction of Joker, how a broken man goes from being looked down upon by others until he embraces his dark side and becomes a symbol of chaos and everyone finally appreciates him. It’s like the old proverb, “A child who is not embraced by their village will burn it down to feel its warmth”. The music in this really haunting yet amazing. And I’d say without a doubt that Phoenix is the best Joker since Heath Ledger, rest in peace.
It's a solid movie, but it doesn't work as a Joker movie. First off, you can't have Batman and the Joker be 50 years apart in age. Secondly, this Arthur Fleck isn't a criminal mastermind, he's barely a mind. He only gets away from regular beat cops due to plot armor. If you had this version of Joker against Batman it would be a 5 minute movie of a millionaire beating up a mentally handicapped person.
You wondered how much weight Phoenix might have lost to play this role. Might I suggest you consider reacting to The Machinist, starring Christian Bale? He infamously lost a phenomenal amount to play the role of Trevor Reznik, in an amazing movie. Which is criminally ignored amongst reactors.
Just a little tidbit for clairty's sake. Multiple times in the reaction you referred to "Arkham City Asylum." Its called "Arkham Asylum." Arkham City was a video game where Arkham Asylum came under new ownership and the new owner cordoned off an entire rundown section of Gotham City and turned it into an open air version of Arkham Asylum, moved all the prisoners from the Asylum into it and named this new prison "arkham city" because it was literally a small city. In real life Asylums in America had completely vanished by the early 1970s. This film takes place in 1979 so Arkham Asylum was renamed "Arkham State Hospital."
I think it's much better to think of it as a ''what if'' kind of standalone comic book story. In DC i think they have the concept of an ''Elseworld'' story. It shouldn't have had a sequel either. It takes away from it's power.
The real question, was it all in his mind during his session with the phycologist while still being locked up in Arkham? Is that why she asked what was funny?
20:10 “I mean, I’m not reading the full letter…” Maybe read the underlined part that it zooms in on so that you have no choice but to read that particular important part. 🤦♂️
fun fact: Joaquin Phoenix said in a press conference that some of the shots in this film, is just him and one camera man that fucked around alone - and they both did shrooms while doing so. He said this is because he wanted to portray 'Joker' as crazy as possible.
There's an easter egg with all the clocks showing the exact same time, notable a clock in the last scene in the white room with the psychologist. Not sure if it was solved but hopefully it's addressed in the sequel. I've heard theories that the whole movie was a day dream. I don't have high hopes for the sequel as Hollywood likes to push agenda's and make money but finger's crossed.
Part of what makes Joker such an iconic character is that he doesn't have a canon origin (afaik). He's almost a primordial force of nature, a spawn of the human condition.
This is one of several Joker origin stories, and this one was inspired by a line between Joker and Batman in which joker warned him that he was "Just one bad day away from being me." This film was meant to give us a look at the bad day that could have created The Joker. The animated film Killing Joke also covers it, but the first half of it is pretty much filler.
this movie is good if you avoid getting caught up with the "there are two wolves inside of me..." crowd. that being said, mary watching this, with a Good Vibes Only sign behind her is pretty funny
this movie is flat out 10/10 it’s incredible one of the best movies of all time the sequel oh boy the sequel is 8/10 for me it was better then the first for me through a lot of it but the 2 movies together work as Scarface but just go into the second with a very open mind
I'm gonna be honest I have to have a very large amount of time in between viewings of this movie, the whole dam thing is just completely depressing despite being so good.
If Joker was connected to The Batman it wouldn't make sense timeline wise. Arthur would be an old man by the time The Batman takes place. Also Thomas Wayne never ran for mayor in Joker. As much as I would love for these films to be connected it just wouldn't work. I don't want to see Batman beating up an old man dressed like a clown. I love Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger they are both fantastic but Mark Hamill will always be the best Joker. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill will always be the definitive Batman and Joker. I highly recommend Batman: Mask of the Phantasm it's the best Batman film.
Nice reaction and no worries It's canon to the DC multiverse it's just another universe ie like Keatons Batman, Bales Batman, Ben's Batman, the different Supermans etc.
While the story doesn't cleave particularly close to DC Comics Canon. It does borrow certain elements and themes from the comics. Joker's origins even in the comics aren't really set in stone, he's even been quoted to say. "If I'm going to have a tragic backstory it might as well be multiple choice." This may have influenced Ledger's Joker where he kept asking "Do you wanna know how I got these scars." giving a different story every-time. But this one I feel follows beats from The Killing Joke by Alan Moore (who also wrote Watchmen and V for Vendetta). In that story the origin of the Joker comes down to "one bad day" that's all that's separating us from our descent into madness. The dream of being a stand-up comedian is definitely taken right from The Killing Joke. Arthur Fleck ends up having a bad day which sets him down the path to becoming Joker.
he kills the three ppl the bullies and then its like basically hes killing his favorite person now cause violence tuirns to violence like no matter whhaaat ya know
Joaquin Phoenix won a Best Actor Oscar for his role in this. For a more comic accurate Joker, I recommend watching Batman: The Animated Series and Batman: The Killing Joke. Other films by director Todd Phillips I recommend watching include Road Trip, Old School, The Hangover and War Dogs. The actress playing Arthur's neighbor is also in Deadpool 2 and Invincible
As much as this is a great movie, but I honestly believe that the joker is perfect without any background story or justification to his madness. One of the best things about the joker is there is no method to his madness.
Jack White is not The Joker’s real name. The creator didn’t give him a real name because he’s supposed to be a mystery. Also, The Joker himself, doesn’t know his own backstory. Whenever people would ask him about his origin story, he would change his answer each time that they would ask. This was a unique take of The Joker. Idk if it’s my favorite, but it’s different
Let me just say, I just watched this movie (literally a few minutes before writing this comment) in preparation to see the second one too and jesus am I upset I didn't watch it when it came out
Phoenix is an amazing actor. His Commodus was equally amazing as he is here. Also great in "Clay Pigeons", an early movie people forgot about. Also with a young Vince Vaughn. Worth a watch.
I would be careful to try and find reason within things that dont have any. Is there really any justification to apply violence to others because of your suffering? Even the train bullies, its not self defence if you shoot people in the back as they are fleeing, its revenge at best and that is illegal. I understand the frustration of injustice, but applying injustice to others does not counter, in fact it adds to the injustice. You are not required to side or feel pity for Arthur, yes he is being mistreated, so are millions others. I think the main thing I could get behind this movie is the idea that what if everyone that felt justified to apply violence as payback decided to do this all at once? Then you get the ending and THAT is imho the take away from this movie.
You and me both, Mary. AFIAC, this was the best Batman-adjacent movie ever made. If they all had this kind of character development and story, I'd be a Batman devotee. Unfortunately, I really couldn't care less about any of the characters in most other Batman movies. I just can't get invested.
Joker definitely deserved the 11 Academy Award nominations it received. I don't understand how it didn't win almost all of them. Joaquin Phoenix gave what is among the best acting performances I've ever seen. That it's not the "official" origin story for the Joker is completely irrelevant. As a matter of fact, it's probably impossible for there to ever be an origin story.

Sadly I can relate to Arthur on a lot but only difference is my ass has a support system from my family
For more Robert De Niro as a stand up comic, you need to watch The King Of Comedy 1982 where he co-stars with Jerry Lewis. Lots of parallels to Joker 2019.
39:16 When Joker became THE Joker
I still remember watching this in 2019 I think? The lead up and build up to the bloody smile scene of the movie gave me chills😅
I remember seeing this in cinemas, and I was just blown away by it. Not like Murray when he “got what he f**king deserved!”. 37:17
I thought it was the most realistic depiction of Joker, how a broken man goes from being looked down upon by others until he embraces his dark side and becomes a symbol of chaos and everyone finally appreciates him.
@@nimz8521Nobody cares 🤡 This is better acting than Heath Ledger. Cry.
@@nimz8521he didn't have a plan yet
His name is only Arthur Fleck in this movie and the sequel.
Arthur has a disorder called pseudobulbar affect - it makes him laugh when stressed
I fast forwarded to the best part and it did not disappoint
Absolutely!!
These people have the knowledge about every actor, director n producers.
Bt, they didn't have seen a single movie in the world 😂😂😂😂
20:10 “I mean, I’m not reading the full letter…” Maybe read the underlined part that it zooms in on so that you have no choice but to read that particular important part. 🤦♂️
Joaquin improvised did a great job making up those post death dancing
Such a great movie, shame the second one flopped
How is it that his official joker snapping point killing Randall is"semi-acceptablle";He spared our little guy
i havent seen this movie but it feels like a sad remake of the movie Falling Down with some joker lore mixed in.
fun fact: Joaquin Phoenix said in a press conference that some of the shots in this film, is just him and one camera man that fucked around alone - and they both did shrooms while doing so.
You should watch Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy. Joker is modeled so much on that film.
Jokers motto is it just takes one really bad day for anyone to become a joker
Part of what makes Joker such an iconic character is that he doesn't have a canon origin (afaik). He's almost a primordial force of nature, a spawn of the human condition.
Can't wait 4 part 2 . 🌹
Gotham is basically 70s and 80s NYC if it never got better and got worse.
Arthur fleck is a joker in Dc comics he is one of the jokers from the dc comics storyline the three jokers.
I loved this movie. Joaquin Phoenix was great. I can't wait for Joker 2! Excited to see Lady Gaga in it ❤
Does anybody else believe that Randall didn't sell him the gun and it was just in his head again?
This is one of several Joker origin stories, and this one was inspired by a line between Joker and Batman in which joker warned him that he was "Just one bad day away from being me."
This film was meant to give us a look at the bad day that could have created The Joker. The animated film Killing Joke also covers it, but the first half of it is pretty much filler.
Living in an urban cesspool is enough to drive anyone mad
this movie is good if you avoid getting caught up with the "there are two wolves inside of me..." crowd. that being said, mary watching this, with a Good Vibes Only sign behind her is pretty funny
this movie is flat out 10/10 it’s incredible one of the best movies of all time the sequel oh boy the sequel is 8/10 for me it was better then the first for me through a lot of it but the 2 movies together work as Scarface but just go into the second with a very open mind
Shout out to the editor who made the little notes when questions like "is this canon?" "Nope." and the Arkham City joke came up.
She was a narcissist. She didnt love him, she didnt want to be alone.
This movie was as insane as taxi driver…. It’s great like taxi driver
You should watch taxi driver that's where they got this idea from . And it happens that Robert D was the main actor in that movie ..check it out
Jack White is not The Joker’s real name.

Du Bois moment
Let me just say, I just watched this movie (literally a few minutes before writing this comment) in preparation to see the second one too and jesus am I upset I didn't watch it when it came out
This movie was amazing love the video Mary stay motivated Dream big 1 mill on the way
🃏🦇 I remember watching this in theaters such a powerful movie!
Its not canon but its better than the canon.
You have to remember: You cannot know what was real? Was the ending even real? Was he ever on the show? Was he actually rescued and applauded?
It is real
@@lexkanyima2195 agree I don't understand how people don't understand that it is real
Well, there's a sequel that carries on from this, so it definitely was real.
I felt dirty after watching this for the first time. That’s how good it is
41:00 "an American shooting" hahaha speaks volumes for our country
Phoenix is an amazing actor. His Commodus was equally amazing as he is here. Also great in "Clay Pigeons", an early movie people forgot about. Also with a young Vince Vaughn. Worth a watch.
Thank you for upload this video Mary. Because today is My 27th Birthday 🎂🎂🎂🎂.
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday!
What do u want a cookie? On any other day this would be sarcasm, but I’m serious! Its your birthday, have as many cookies as u want!
@@MaryCherryOfficial De Niro did in, King of Comedy 1982, similar role that Phoenix in this .
Happy birthday!
What I love about this movie is that you think it's an origin story but at the end, you don't really know about the Joker
It has stiff competition.
Yeah. Mary is back. ❤❤❤
Jeremy Jahns - Joker Folie a Deux
42:05 in Frank Miller's "the dark knight returns", Joker was on Letterman, and he did kill everyone there.
