Its impossible to understand Joker. His backstories are always different. This is not an exception, Joker can be anything and anyone and be crazy because he just think it's funny and whatever in his head. People keep insisting in making definitive reasons on why he is the way he is but don't even realize that even this movie isn't definitive as well. All the "truths" and "twists" are very questionable. So is his reasons.
It's the whole point of empathy.. which people always confuse with sympathy. The novel Hannibal had a great quote about how a lot of people fear empathy because they find it uncomfortable to think that you can understand someone fully while still despising them.
If you look at the photo Arthur was looking at when he's getting ready for the Murray Show, the T.W. signature is in Penny's handwriting. Proving that Thomas never slept with her. It was all Penny.
“If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!” The quote comes from Alan Moore’s classic graphic novel, The Killing Joke. In the comics, the Joker doesn't have a definitive origin. It's why Heath Ledger tells 3 different versions of where he got the scars...
It’s entirely appropriate to feel sorry for Arthur and be horrified at what he has done, all at the same time. Sort of the whole point of the movie, actually. That is what makes him such an intriguing villain.
There was such a a strong message that was missed by many who condemned this movie: we need to take care of each other. It also struck such a cord (all over the world, but just the US) of disenfranchisement with systems of authority and power. People feel trapped, forgotten and beaten down. They feel like they are being told they don't matter. When people feel like that, they don't feel like there's any other options and nothing to lose. And that leads to a very dangerous place.
Beautiful genius work here. Scathing social criticism wrapped in an unreliable narrator protagonist. Indeed Oscar worthy performance by Phoenix. One of a handful of movies that still brings me to tears everytime. No one was ready for this Addie...

The difficulty in telling what is real is a big part of it. Every time they tell the Joker’s origin story they always leave a little ambiguity whether what we just saw was the real story or an invention of the Joker’s warped mind. The first time they told it, in the Killing Joke comic, the Joker himself said “If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice.”
As you were explaining that it's an open topic if Thomas Wayne was indeed his dad. I always felt like he wasn't Arthur's father. Everything positive in his life is simply a fabrication. We know that Arthur embellished all of his romantic yearnings, which was all in his head. He fabricated that his stand-up went well. Given his deep psychosis I would assume that he, in fact, wrote " Love your smile - T.W " himself in order to have a desperate connection to something normal like a father. We know that the joker loves to talk about smiling, and the message on the picture was all about smiling. It leaves you questioning everything.
He is not related to the Waynes. He was adopted by his Mom. His Mom worked for Wayne and was mentally Ill so she made everything up in her mind like Arthur did. It clearly shows in the movie and they say his mother made all up.
What a great movie. Your edit is wonderful, I feel as if all the important parts are included. I had not seen the full movie and now I feel as if I do not have to. Thank you Miss Addie. Have a good day.😊
Something I love about Joker is how it finally gives some air to the other side of a pretty sensitive topic: It's no secret that there's a massive issue with bullying and scorn, especially in the US. But the media always phrases it as though the tragedy was sudden and blame the gun/weapon. Even in cartoons like Static Shock, where there's a more nuanced take, they still end the episode with the bully being given a slap on the wrist after the victim snaps (also shown is the teachers turning away and letting the bullying happen). It's always that the victim is in the wrong for snapping while the bullies at most get shame that IRL they couldn't care less about. In Joker however, the constant spiralling of Arthur is shown bare; he isn't perfect and makes some bad calls, but he also never asked for any of it. A teacher would say "just walk away", but life keeps getting back in his face. The train incident could only end with death, so it was them or him. He lashes out as his only option, and society calls his attackers angels and him a freak. All too often you see that on TV. But where almost all media will ultimately blame the victim or fall short with benign advice, Joker shows a case where the victim succeeds. Where he's heard, albeit by rioters, but heard. All he wanted. Not surprising that the news tried to attack Joker and claim it would cause a shooting in the theatre; the media doth protest too much. You flip on the TV and see another shooting in an American school and they say "How could have this happened?" Well, here ya go.
It was the highest Grossing R rated movie of 2019, making $1 Billion dollars at the box office, until DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE made $1.3 billion dollars in 2024. Nominated for 11 Oscars including Best Picture, making it the first DC Comic book movie to be nominated in all categories, but won for Best Actor Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score. David Fincher dismissed the film, saying that the main character who has serious mental health issues is seen as a hero in his community fighting back against a corrupt society rather than being seen as the villain.
To the ‘ Queen of Intense Movies’ Well done! I loved the way you paced the way you drove that joke about joking. Never knew you were such a great joker. 😂🙏🏾
The riot scene outside the theater at the end was shot at my train station where I lived at the time. They were asking for locals to submit their contact information to an email address and they would randomly selected however many people they needed to be the clowns. I was not selected, but I saw everything being set up on my way to work that morning and the final preparations when I got home that evening.
I'm sure you figured it out but no he was not Thomas's son. His mother already had a similar delusional type of issue as him and imagined all of it the discovery was placed as a breaking point for Arthur. He was fatherless and role modeless as established which this was meant to concrete but as it turns out motherless in a large sense as well. In short the identity of Arthur is in itself a fiction that he struggles with as the identity that he is the good guy. Through his perception and these realizations we follow him onto his coming to terms with the fact that he is the bad guy and the identity of Joker. And no one was ready for this. I think more after I recall thinking about it and in the least appreciating the perspective they told the story through or rather made us experience his and his realizations and transforming from. It's intelligent storytelling.
I enjoyed watching the movie... once. And it's also one of the few movies I don't care to see reactions to. But I'll leave a comment to help push the video up in the algorithms for those who do like watching them.
Regarding the question, is Thomas Wayne the father of Arthur? It is intentionally open for discussion and no real answer exists. My own thought and theory: I believe Penny and Thomas had an affair, but no child was conceived. During their affair, Thomas noticed Penny had some serious problem and called of the affair. To try and extort money from Thomas, Penny adopted Arthur. The extortion attempt failed.
30:55 The photo was real... But I think that the note "Love your smile" on the back may have been the catalyst for Penny's delusion that she and Wayne had a relationship. This was probably a benign gesture on Wayne's part (saying something nice to one of his staff), not knowing she had severe mental health issues. It kind of parallels Arthur's interaction with Sophie in the elevator. He creates this entire imaginary relationship with her simply because she smiled at him (making him feel good for once in his life).
Now you need to watch Taxi Driver, which was Scorsese's breakout and a massive inspiration for Joker. Objectively, probably one of the better movies ever made, and certainly one of the most influential. A masterpiece that is not only still studied in film school almost 50 years later but is still widely revered as the grandfather of independent cinema.
....what the other commenters are saying (without saying) is "Don't waste your time on Joker 2, the musical"....Yes, it's a musical, and does it's best to trash the audience. Your expectations cannot possibly be so LOW that you'll enjoy this movie. It's called #2 because it is #2.

This movie shows why we need to be kind to each other. This poor guy, searching and craving that human connection, looks so creepy because of his disability. He really is the monster we created.
That letter from TW complimenting Penny's smile only confirms a relationship between the two. It hints it may have been an inappropriate relationship. And even if Wayne was absolutely a philandering SOB, that's still not proof he's Arthur's father.
No. Arthur is not Thomas Wayne's son. lol... The paperwork was supposed to be definitive. His "mother" was just crazy. The Wayne's never did anything to her. She was locked up for what she did to Arthur. She was dangerous.
This is a brilliant Elseworlds story but it shouldn't be looked at as an origin story for Joker. The great thing about Joker is that he doesn't need a origin story.

Wait!! No big musical numbers in this??!!😂
Joaquin deserves the oscar for his portrayal of The Joker! Great reaction Addie thanks for sharing!❤️💛
Have you not been keeping up with things? 🤡
Please continue with Star Trek.
I am so happy that I am watching this movie with you
Regarding the question, is Thomas Wayne the father of Arthur? It is intentionally open for discussion and no real answer exists.
My own thought and theory: I believe Penny and Thomas had an affair, but no child was conceived. During their affair, Thomas noticed Penny had some serious problem and called of the affair. To try and extort money from Thomas, Penny adopted Arthur. The extortion attempt failed.
In case Addi gets into DC content, I recommend “Superman & Lois”.
So the ending scene is completely erased in the sequel?
thanks for reaction
They turned joker into a Darth Vader like character. You don't know if you should hate him or feel bad for him
Yes.
....what the other commenters are saying (without saying) is "Don't waste your time on Joker 2, the musical"....Yes, it's a musical, and does it's best to trash the audience. Your expectations cannot possibly be so LOW that you'll enjoy this movie. It's called #2 because it is #2.
Now you know why jay leno was so careful about screening who he brought on the tonight show
she’s seen this. Nobody could figure out Arthur and the girls relationship was all in his head.
🃏 Welp my Saturday is about to be instantly better!
You're not queen of intense movies Addie, until you meet Art the Clown. It's a worthy challenge I hope you'll one day soon accept.😁🙏
One of the detectives is also in a very good, intriguing, very uncomfortable movie that no one reacts to called Compliance.
I laughed way too hard at the miniature golf joke...😅
only 1 out of 5 reactors notice the bloody footprints. nice. 👍
Before I watch this.. must say, sen and love your comments. I am older man, who watches, well love ,You ,....ääh, sorry, enghiks broken...well.. love this movie, thänks😆
Took out Dumbledore and then his mom. He was perfect for joker
Addie should watch Godzilla Minus One.
Shin Godzilla too
Throw in the entirety of the Monsterverse while we’re at it. I’m sure I’d enjoy seeing her react to THOSE films ^_^
If Thomas had gotten Penny pregnant she wouldn't have had to adopt an abandoned child
unless the paper for adoption were a cover up to hide the father. (personally I agree with your position)
This movie shows why we need to be kind to each other. This poor guy, searching and craving that human connection, looks so creepy because of his disability. He really is the monster we created.
Taxi Driver tried to get the same message across in 1976.
Nobody cares about a large percentage of males & that's reflected in the high suicide rates.
(in response to the title of this video) Of course you weren't, Addie. But always remember, that's life.
This is the spiritual successor to Taxi Driver. If you haven't seen it, please do!
You're the first reactor Ive seen that has the same idea that Thomas Wayne could have used his wealth and power to cover everything up.
Excellent video, very good reaction, 👌, but if you found the joker very shocking, you should see the Dark Knight Returns movies
Yeah this is a perfect stand alone movie
Love your attempt to convince yourself of your badass-edness!😁😆
You know what? I just took a peek at my face in the mirror and realized JUST HOW HANDSOME I really am...just thought I'd share with you guys.
Thomas Wayne was not a politician.
That letter from TW complimenting Penny's smile only confirms a relationship between the two. It hints it may have been an inappropriate relationship. And even if Wayne was absolutely a philandering SOB, that's still not proof he's Arthur's father.
Amazing movie, unique, so happy that they didnt make a sequel
Still an unfunny joke. There is one, and it properly kept the same thematic developments as the original. Cope with it.
Please watch The Whale. It's such an incredible movie. I would love to see your reaction.
Check out The King Of Comedy.
BTW Bobby, you're fired 😂
No. Arthur is not Thomas Wayne's son. lol... The paperwork was supposed to be definitive. His "mother" was just crazy. The Wayne's never did anything to her. She was locked up for what she did to Arthur. She was dangerous.
Yes, Thomas paid good money for "Definitive" papers.
@@lokithecat7225they’re not brothers, stop it.
Ouch
Rich people can buy fake documents paper work smart guy
@@redwolf6407 not in this film, not so smart guy. They are not brothers. Movie spells it out for you.
You should watch Micheal Douglas in 'Falling Down'.
This is a brilliant Elseworlds story but it shouldn't be looked at as an origin story for Joker. The great thing about Joker is that he doesn't need a origin story.
Maybe we need some more Batman background if you’re unsure of his name
She's reacted to a bunch of Batman movies already, wth?
@ “wth” is the appropriate reaction to not knowing Batman’s name
Hey addie I enjoy watching all ur reactions I'd like to see ur reaction to the fox and the hound soon when u can.
Such a good movie, I'm so glad they didn't make a sequel
