If you want the real answer, gman is slang for government man. It was his name in the hl1 game files and since he had no other name, that's the one that stuck. I think the first time he's refered to as a "gman" is by Adrian Shephard in the Opposing Force game manual (correct me if I'm wrong) since Adrian assumes he works for the government with a suit like that.

The Answer really is Garry, infact, my theory is that he created Garrys mod, (Named after himself for being a godly entity with a form no human can comprehend) as an experiment, to see how far gordons creativity, inteligence and also dark desires would go, you can mae whatever you want, complex machines, torture devices, or just tokyo drifting in a car, what he G-man doesnt account for, is the fact that gordon is controlled not by his mind, but a higher force, being us. This means the experiment G-man has been trying to conduct, has failled, but he doesnt even know it.
