    Did you see the RunnersWorld interview with Nike where they said they are streamlining their running shoe line? There will be Standard and Premium versions. Specifically said the Invincible 3 will now be called the Vomero Plus. I think this is good for consumers as it makes the choice less overwhelming and confusing. Much like the iPhone one can now choose between standard, premium, and other versions of just a couple shoes. Love it.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  Місяць тому +3

      I did and we will see how it pans out. Nike’s running line (like most big brands) needs a massive pruning, so it’s good.
      However the standard and premium thing could get dicey unless they clearly define the difference. I’m a longterm Apple user but the “pro” name on an Apple product means nothing anymore as it’s been so diluted.

    Air Zoom (which I distinguish from standard Air) has been a staple for a while now. They’ve done some interesting things in the past 2 decades on implementing those zoom units, notably in their basketball shoes, but it’s even made its way into soccer cleats/boots and track spikes. My favorite instances of zoom air have been Alphafly 1, full length zoom+lunarlon drop-in midsole in the Lebron 11, and the unlocked zoom in the Jordan XX8 and XX9 shoes (almost a precursor to the alphafly’s implementation).
    I do think that curving the full length bag is a unique change that seems inspired by the carbon fiber plates of Vaporfly, so that could be very exciting, but the Pegasus Premium does sadly look to be quite the heavy and likely expensive shoe when it eventually releases. In a market where running shoes are getting lighter and the market looks to be pushing that technological forefront, I get why Nike doubled down on what makes them unique in Zoom Air, but I do wonder if it’ll be too little too late for performance footwear in running.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  Місяць тому +2

      Agree… the weight is going to be key here. This shoe won’t be ultra light but if they can get it around 9oz for US Men’s Size 9… it’s a good start.

      The Zoom Milers were my all time favorites. But the air unit never lasted for more than 6 months. Absolutely tragic how badly they were designed, given how comfortable they were.

    This feels like their attempt to compete with the Asics Superblast. That ZoomX top layer with the Alphafly's full length air zoom unit while making it more durable is nice, especially since the Vaporflys and Alphaflys aren't very durable.

      I think the specs are about the same as the 39/40, they don’t look much different. Maybe they gained 1-2mm but nothing substantial.

  • @torenforsberg1
    @torenforsberg1 Місяць тому +5

    I know that you love Nike, but I just can't get to the same spot. They truly deserve the credit for creating the super shoe market with the inception of the Vaporfly followed by the Alphafly.
    However, everything else they've done in the daily trainer and super trainer space has been absolutely mediocre. To the point you made in your initial Saucony video, other manufacturers haven't necessarily brought innovation the same way Nike did with the creation of super shoe market. However, they've sure advanced it in a way that has alluded Nike.
    Nike really doesn't have a great daily training or super training lineup. They really don't have anything that competes with the likes of a Novablast, Superblast, Endorphin Speed, Boston 12, Takumi Sen, etc. ZoomX is great, but what else are they doing with other variations of foam and technology, in the non-super shoe space, that is at all interesting? In fact, if you look at every manufacturer top to bottom in terms of midsole foams from their super shoes down to their daily trainers, I put Nike firmly in the bottom two (along with Brooks). Even ZoomX is starting to feel a little bland when compared to the likes of what Asics and Hoka are doing (the Cielo X1 has in my opinion, the most unbelievable midsole insure ever created).
    When I think of Nike, I truly think of a running populace brand, not a running innovation brand. They've been riding the coattails of the unbelievable innovation that they brought to the market with the introduction of their super shoes in 2017 + 2018.
    I hope some of these upcoming releases turn the tides and start proving me wrong. However, at this point, I'll believe it when I see it.
    Though we disagree regarding Nike, please know how much I love your videos and your perspective. I firmly hope to be wrong about Nike going forward :-)

      @SagasuRunning  Місяць тому

      I agree with what you are saying actually. The Nike running line in 2024 is a bit in shambles. The Peg, and the 3 variations we are getting, is literally the only trainer that I’m interested in from them. I have massive reservations about all of them… but will still give them a try and cover them.
      Thank you for the support as always. I realized making this video… besides the V17 problem video I haven’t made much Nike content this year… things change.

      The best Nike trainer is the InvincibleRun3. That full bed of ZoomX is a dream to run on plus it has a very durable outsole. I have nearly 500km in my pair, I've done everything up to threshold workouts and trail runs with my pair, it still refuses to die at this point, Currently am contemplating on whether to score another pair for the future. patents last only 21 years. that's how Skechers and many other smaller brand can use similar technology to air maxes without getting sued. Zoom air is also an expired patent, but i guess the complexity to manufacture zoom isn't fiscally worth it to the smaller brands who copy technologies.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  Місяць тому

      I did know this but I also figured Nike re-ups or finds related avenues to patent around the original patent. The OG Air max air is long gone. Zoom Air though is something Nike will very much protect through many means. Especially with the success of the Alphafly.
      Realistically though...only Adidas could afford the R&D and manufacturing costs to produce something similar, at least of the same quality and performance characteristics.

      @SagasuRunning the only thing they have is trademark protection. Full length zoom is without a doubt comfy. But I just didn’t like the instability in the Nike Zoom All Out. But I always thought, while still keeping the full length zoom air idea, maybe try zoning the zoom air out into a few different pods? That would create a whole lot more stability than if the zoom bag is 1 piece running the length of the shoe

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  Місяць тому

      I feel like the curve in the Zoom Air unit will allow for them to introduce some more stability into the shoe. Either with the sidewall thickness above or below the unit or the tensile fibers. I could also se them doing zoned Zoom Air units, similar to what they do with the current air units in the Pegasus, just more drastic and visual.

    Very interested to hear more about this one and hope it's not quite as narrow as Nike shoes often are. Makes it hard for me to use the brand. That said, to me, the biggest storyline here is that Nike (just one guy's opinion of course) has really lost its position as a leader in running shoes other than the race models. There isn't anything special about the Vomero, Peg, etc. relative to a Saucony Ride or offerings from Hoka and other players. We'll see how this plays out, but I believe this to be the brand's attempt to have that same sort of separation it enjoys between the Vaporfly/Alphafly and the counterparts to those shoes from New Balance, et al.

    Interesting. And yes please a review of the new “normal” peg would be much appreciated (need to get a new daily runner and thinking to switch from invincible to peg).

      The Pegasus is one of the most important lines in Nike running. Even though it seems to have taken a backseat to the racing options the past few years it is no surprise Nike uses it as a platform for their next phase of innovation.
      The shoe shown here is for the PR hit and it will be seen the next year or so on the feet of athletes...for the PR. However, as i said at the end of the video, I don't think this is the final for. I'd expect Nike to evolve this concept into something much more performance oriented (which this is but I'm sure it can be pushed further).

    I think Nike thought about a exposed air unit peg, but they are worried about the durability of the Zoom Air. It’s not like the Air Max unit, even it loses air pressure, the structure of the midsole can still hold it up. That’s not the case for pegs. As for the Peg 41, the first ReactX running shoe weighed more than a house and I recall you thought it was basically more of a lifestyle shoe. Let's hope the Peg 41 isn't of that ilk. Pegasus has already had visible air units in the past, and it was such a big flop that Nike had to rename the shoes air Arma for men, and air Imara for women, because it is a big nonsense to have visible air units in a regular training shoe.
    Pegasus has always be known in the running world as a reference for regular trainers.
    When the air unit is hidden, it is protected and the shoe lasts longer, or maybe this new version of the Peg is not designed anymore for training, which would make sense.

  • @athoughtfulape
    @athoughtfulape Місяць тому

    I understand how important Air is to Nike, but I’ve grown tired of seeing the brand equate “innovation” to different setups of visible Air.
    I think a curved Zoom Air unit will deliver a new sensation underfoot, but if the experience is even partly similar to what a Vaporfly 3 feels underfoot, I can’t help but think that the average consumer will be turned away from the Pegasus Premium in favor of something less aggressive. An MSRP of over $200 USD is expected like you said, but I don’t know if it’s the right move, especially given that the shoe is being touted as part of the Nike Pegasus family, one that consistently goes on sale/can be found for steep discounts at Nike outlets.
    I don’t foresee serious runners trading their Saucony Triumphs and Hoka Cliftons for the Pegasus Premium, but stranger things have happened. I also can’t get behind the Pegasus Premium’s upper, as it feels bulky and outdated in comparison to the sole unit. Maybe this is a way to capture the average consumer, but I think a Pegasus Turbo-like upper would’ve fit better.

      I agree with a lot of this. I don’t think the Pegasus Premium will feel like a VF or a plated shoe, it will be the opposite. However, there is no doubt Nike is using its learnings from plated shoes to develop this.

      I agree… Nike training needs to deliver. This may be the first step to that. We shall see how it evolves over the next 5 years.

    Air unit technology is pretty much a scam and hype to sell the shoes, the concept makes sense but the execution doesn't. There's the reason most of Nike performance shoes still mainly use some kind of foam. Even their basketball shoes intentionally make the air unit as small as possible, mostly hidden or encased in solid foam or rubber structure.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  Місяць тому

      It’s more Nike Air is a very old technology, from the mid 1980s. It has been eclipsed by many other things, including both foams and new versions of Air. Nike have been putting Zoom Air units in many shoes, basketball and running (mostly) for well over 10 years. Zoom Air is the modern version of Nike Air and very different in feel.
      I do agree that in 2024 with superfoam… Air is maybe not what it was… but the Alphafly has show you can make them work together with great results.

    If you run in a Pegasus you don't feel the zoom units. We all know those units are too thin to make ANY kind of difference. Also the Dn is a complete gimmick; its not possible to have a connected air chamber with two different PSI

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  Місяць тому

      I'm often very aware of the Zoom Air units, especially the one in the forefoot. I definitely feel it when I hit it correctly (I am a forefoot striker) and the feel is very different that a pure React foam shoe. I also feel them when there is a problem, when the bag looses pressure or shifts in the pocket.
      As for multiple PSI in one chamber. Agree, not possible. However, Nike can tune the tensile fibers and/or the external material on the top/bottom of the bag, in combination with the foams. Honestly, you can do that all with pure foams... but Nike sees something here and it's interesting none-the-less.
