Kareem Majeens I was thing more off to the front. The action sound of clapping metal is where the similarity of reading is coming from and not the sound from the muzzle.
Kareem Majeens thats right! You can actually calculate how far the decibel reader should be away from the sound source to get down to a certain sound level.
Yes, though for an unsuppressed gunshot, you might have to move the meter farther away than is really practical. You could always stick a GoPro in front of it and check it later. Alternatively, you could cover the Mic with a bunch of sound absorbing material. The absolute dB SPL readings would be meaningless, but subtract the difference between unsuppressed and suppressed, and you'll know how much the suppressor is lowering the sound pressure. Also, for loud sounds, you'll get a more meaningful reading if you set the meter to dBC. OSHA's use of dBA for everything is almost as dumb as their old MSDS sheets that told you to flush your eyes with water if you got sterile saline in them.
DemolitionRanch You can use that sound meter (maybe in a future video) using just a bit of math and physics. First thing to note is that sound intensity falls off as an inverse square law, meaning that the intensity (in Watts/m^2) decreases by a factor of 4 if you double the distance, by a factor of 9 if you triple the distance, etc. Then, we convert from intensity to decibels by taking a logarithm (base 10). So, say you measure the volume of your gun at a distance of 10m (about 33 feet in freedom units) and measure it's volume using the sound meter, say that's X decibels. The intensity of the sound (again, in Watts/m^2) should be 100 times less than it would be at 1m (about 3 feet, 4 inches in freedom units). That factor of 100 accounts for a 20 dB decrease in volume. So if your sound meter read X dB when it is 10m from the gun, it would be approximately (X+20) dB when it 1m from the gun. Note that this is an approximation, but it's something, and it might be a good way to make good use of your soundmeter! For those interested, the way the calculation works is thus. Say you measure the volume using the soundmeter at a distance "a" from your source, and it reads X dB. Then, if you want to convert that reading to what it would be if you had measured the volume at a distance "b," use the following formula: Volume at distance b = X + 10*log_10(a^2/b^2). This means that if you have the volume at distance a, then you can compute the volume at distance b for any distance (either further or closer) to your source using this formula. Now note that this is an approximation, because the wavefront of the sound wave is not spherical (i.e. the gun is not a point source) but it should be approximately true as long as you aren't right next to the gun (but say, 1-2m away). Source: Am physicist, literally just taught the inverse square law (and sound intensity) yesterday in lecture!
Sam I loved it. Thanks. I liked the freedom units best. There will be no stinking metric here!!! No offense brother, but I also printed it to read again tonight when I cannot sleep.
If you're just trying to determine which weapon is quieter and when, just walk the meter away from the firing point at varying angles roughly 30ft until you get dB readings in the upper third range of the meter. As long as the weapon and firing position remain the same, you will get an accurate depiction of which weapon is louder...and when. No konfoosing math involved...lol
Few sound pressure meters have the impulse response to handle firearms reports. The often just average out the levels ove a long period, rather than measuring the peak impulse.
For those that dont know... Sound Pressure Level/Decibels are not linear. 105dB is twice as loud as 100dB. For every 5dB increase the SPL becomes twice as much. Something to keep in mind.
I've been a machinist for going on 17 years. I can say, with a high certainty, that any shop with a half decent CNC or even a screw machine, can manufacture all pieces of that suppressor quickly and at a low price. Except for the spring. We don't make springs.

If a normal suppressor has 10 or so baffles you should take several suppressors apart and put all of the baffles together to make a super long suppressor and see how quiet it is!
Rebel Silencers makes supressors you can do just that with....buy as many non-serialized baffles as you want and put them together....I've seen some internet videos where 2 and 3 suppressors are screwed end to end.
Like everything else ... there MUST be a sweet spot of # of baffles, diameter & length of the chambers between baffles for a given caliber/load etc. A hybrid silencer that uses current tech as well as mechanical would be pretty damn kool too ... or maybe even hydraulic resistance to control the gas expansion and somehow port a percentage of the gas BACK behind the bullet .... or gas ported back (again) almost behind itself (bullet) to give more "spin". All about harnessing, controlling and maybe redirecting the flow of expanding gases.
Gamma Light - I weeded through the comments to find someone who answered the cost question and here it is. To elaborate, it comes down to economics and how many units a company can sell for the product they make. Consider if Miro$oft could only sell 10 copies of Micro$oft Office. What would you pay for it? It would be six figures if not more. Because they sell millions of copies, the cost is spread and lower. If everyone owned the same weapon and bought a suppressor for it, the cost would be lower. Trust me, I'm a doctor....ish.
I don't buy that explanation with this product area, a product price has to take sense to me. I won't spend $800 on one suppressor however I would easily spend the same amount for more product, I'll spend $800 on 4 suppressors. If I can get a match noveske barrel for under $500 anywhere. Why would I spend MORE than that for a muzzle device.
Meh... useless crap all of it. Its just toys for 'rich' kids. You don't need a gun (their are exceptions, very few). Same as that dude with a 1000rhp car. You don't need it, so you gotta pay (through the teeth) for it. Still hilarious to hear people bitch & moan about the tax stamp and what not.
silencer, loundener, speed cocker. whats that other one? this one is for shooting down police helicopters. I see....I wont be needing anything like that.....yet.....
The larger chamber of the integral suppressor has a lower harmonic resonance frequency. Lower frequency sounds seem less loud to the ear at the same decibel reading. That's why the tube suppressor 'sounds' louder but reads the same on the machine.
A suppressor is just a gun muffler. If it wasn't illegal to manufacture one without a license they'd be even cheaper because machinists would post them on Etsy.
Use the decibal meter in a delta setting: set the meter a measured distance from the point of fire, and record the delta between non/suppressed fire. Sound is radiated energy, so range squared allows for a delta measurement (oversimplified) in your shooting gallery to determine if there's a difference in suppressor quality.
You guys get ripped off for silencers, I have a modular (extendable) DPT silencer for my tikka t3x and it cost £250. That's a premium price in the UK. You can buy many silencers for less than £100, no tax stamp either. It's only a piece of metal.
Kyle Heck eh what, who's legally required to have a moderator (thats the real english for them) no one has to have one but it's easy enough to get one on your licence just by saying it's for environmental and hearing safety.
8:50 “The guns themselves are not loud, but the bullets are loud.” Ahhhh yes. The science I came here for. It would appear that when you pull the trigger... it goes boom.
Basic Hint: the dB level of acoustic energy decreases with distance from the generating source, usually 6 dB every time the distance is doubled as a general rule. Most firearm sound levels are measured in the vicinity of the operator's ear location. Since the peak level of the signal depends on the physical distance from the firearm and the azimuth relative to the discharge axis of the barrel (relative to muzzle), both the azimuth and distance can be controlled to employ the available sound measurement instrument. However, the primary limitation of most hand-held sound measurement instruments is that they are not designed to measure the extremely short impulse generated by a firearm muzzle discharge (even if the instrument is set to 'fast' mode). Some higher-end instruments have an "impulse" setting and this would be more appropriate for this type of measurement. However, the mechanical action of a firearm will also generate acoustic energy, much like a blacksmith hammering on an anvil which can be in the range of 110 dB to 115 dB. This is demonstrated in the video where the operator holds the sound meter next to the action and observes 115 dB as the slide cycles on the receiver. At the point of the measurement, the mechanical sound was louder than the discharge sound and within the measurement interval range. That sound is within the time detection capability of the instrument. If you mount the sound meter on a tripod and measure it at a consistent distance and azimuth of the firearm, you should get useful measurements within the instrument's range. Example: consider an unsuppressed 156 dB at one foot 150 deg from muzzle with an instrument range of 130 dB max. Place instrument along the same azimuth, at a distance of 32 feet and the sound level would be approximately 126 dB. That still doesn't mean that the instrument is fast enough to capture the short pulse of the muzzle discharge. For that, you're better off using either a hand-held unit with impluse capability or a fast digital storage oscilloscope and then examine the calibrated signal trace on that oscilloscope. You should check either test set up with a calibrated sound signal (or better yet a set of calibrated sounds) to validate the measurement. Good shooting and wear your earpro ...

To be honest... a loudensor would be a great idea for home defense. You pull out a 25 but it sounds like a 50 cal? I know I'd think twice if I was a bad guy..
Well that is a good idea. You just have to focus the boom at the target.Someone should try shooting a suppressor tube without the monocore/baffles and the front cap.It may work
Maybe bolt action rifles are quieter when supressed , because semi / fully automatic rifles eject the just fired case in less than 1 second after the shot and the soundwaves exit out there as well... Sooo if this is right , then bolt actions should be quieter when supressed / silenced Test this out Matt!
Depending on the specific type of gun there are other issues. AKs, for instance, have a lot of noise that comes from the gas block. Also the bolt action will be more quiet when using a good suppressor and subsonic ammo compared to a semi auto using the same of both because the action of a semi auto cycling can be pretty loud.
It's understandable tho. Imagine some emo kid at a school getting their hands on a silencer. I'm surprised it isn't *harder* to get silencers or firearms than it is in US.
huldu if I have to choose between a kid with a silencer or a kid with a weapon, i would choose the silencer. Sure, it hurts if he throw the silencer at you, but a gun shot hurts a bit more.

Nathan Conley I'm sorry but silencers aren't a thing. It's kinda silly to call them that when a guy in the video continuously repeats the word suppressor.
The SIG box in the video literally has "Silencer" written on it (visible at 4:40). The gun company markets it as a Silencer. The other box has Suppressor written on it. Sure, it doesn't silence the weapon, but Suppressor and Silencer are interchangeable terms, both are commonly used, and arguing semantics about it on youtube is just pissing in the wind. Care less.

The Internet Commentator basically any muzzle break makes a gun louder.... I have a brake on my Daniel defense ar-15 and had someone ask me if it was 308 or some other larger caliber because it is insanely loud!!!!!
Yes they are. And even if the guns are louder than 130, why he doesn't measure from some distance. You could still see the difference between normal and silenced.
@DemolitionRanch Some of the extra cost of making supressors and why they tend to be so expensive is the cost of it being an NFA item. Apart from your $200 tax as an individual to purchase a supressor, the company pays additional taxes to manufacture NFA items, as well as their FFL fees and liabilities. If the hearing protection act passed we could possibly have seen the cost of producing a supressor decrease, and I have faith that companies would pass on the savings even under increasing demand.
No, more economy of scale. If you make a pocket knife, yes it takes machining, tool and die work, etc. This work is costly to set up, as you have to program all the machines to cut the right parts the right way, trial and error to make sure the process works, etc. All said and done though, you're gonna sell a few hundred thousand pocket knives, so that initial set-up cost is spread out among a few hundred thousand people. Suppressors, however, are illegal in many places, and highly regulated just about everywhere else. It's difficult and expensive just to have the *ability* to buy one for the people lucky enough to be able to at all. That means very few are sold. So, all that initial set up cost is unloaded on the few people buying them. Sig is going to sell their suppressors at such a high cost because they know not too many will sell and they need to recover that initial cost. Also, because they will redesign their suppressor again soon to improve it (because Sig wants to be seen as high quality, they're not going to be selling "outdated" designs) they are going to have that same high set up cost again soon. And they have to recover that cost every time they update it. My guess is this company made one simple suppressor design that they are banking on a lot of people buying for many years to come. They might not break even on their set up costs for 5 years or more. But I'm sure they're hoping that a simple, straightforward design they're selling for cheap will sell more and longer than other designs.
This....isn't true. The below is why these suppressors are cheaper. Not sure if anyone will see this, but if anyone is wondering why this is so cheap - It is about twice as heavy as any other options. Weight at the end of your rifle is usually where you'll feel it most It's a double walled suppressor because the materials they use are shit. Expanding on this, stainless steel is both way heavier as well as lasts a shorter time than titanium which is what everything else uses Won't last as long, and wont be repairable when it breaks (the latter being the case with pretty much all suppressors) No quick attach mounts You have to pay a 200 dollar tax stamp anyway. So it's really a difference between 400 dollars and 470 at the end of the day. Saving up to get a much lighter, much more reliable suppressor from a company with much better customer service seems like a no-brainer for most people who have to wait 9 months to get a suppressor, and need it to last because it's their only one.
Aoi - at the end of the day, because of the tax stamp, that's still 225 dollars. And those don't do as good a job of suppressing noise, nor do they last very long, and they're also incredibly bulky an ugly. I'd still just wait and buy a quality piece that you'll be happy with for your whole life, as opposed to something cheap you'll have to replace every so often and something you'll have to wait 8 months to use anyway.
Anon it’s both. Places where suppressors aren’t regulated they are way cheaper than here. Not $200 cheap, but 4-500 for a good one vs 800+ like they often are here. Titanium is expensive, but not THAT expensive. EoS is a big factor as well. Especially because machining titanium has additional challenges over many other materials.
Gun Nut its almost entirely due to the fact that the people who put the time and energy into buying one have the money to pay whatever they need to to buy one. They aren't expensive because they need to be, they're expensive because they can be.
You can actually legally register an oil filter and convert it to accept the round you want to shoot out of it. Works great in .22lr and is a cheaper way to get a suppressor. However check your local laws, it isn’t legal everywhere.
Steven Soco no it really isn’t, over half that price is taxes. Firearms and related products are subject to every normal tax and some special ones only pertaining to them.
Why it's $1000 for the "better" silencers... 1) Better materials that tend to last longer. 2) Lifetime warranties, even if you have a baffle strike. 3) Research and development. 4) These manufacturers are working in a field that is highly regulated. This slows down production as they must follow very strict procedures about how silencers and their parts are built, stored, handled,etc.. ( Can't build it without a serial number; ..... ) 5) Expectation that the finished product is built better than the homebuilt silencers.. 6) Marketing to a very narrow subset of the population. Heck, 1/2 of America believes silencers are wholly illegal... 7) limited number of companies out there building such products. To make matters worse, most want to deal with a local dealer, which reduces selection, thus also contributing to the higher prices. 8) EVEN if I buy today, and pay for it all up front, I won't have the product in my hand typically for 6 months to maybe over a year. That leads to buying a better product rather than buying the cheaper product and then wishing that I had bought the better product in the first place.. IF I buy the cheapest suppressor, get it in my hand 8 months later, then decide to buy a different suppressor, the one I should have bought in the first place, it will now take me another 6 months to a year or more to get it in hand.. 9) When you purchase a suppressor, well, there's almost NO selling it because there's no market out there for selling something that takes another 6 months to a year to transfer to the new owner... Anyone's time is worth money if they are worth a darn. When you submit a form 1 to build your own, you submit the form, pay the $200 fee, and wait from several months to a year for approval BEFORE you can build your first part. And you can't build "extras" either.. Imagine if you had to pay someone while waiting for the forms to come back before you can even start.. Reality is that a suppressor should be $25 to $50 considering what it's made up of ; but because of the regulation, it drives the prices up high because there's not that many companies building them; that and the associated taxes, fees & regulations that go into building them.

Supersonic cracks of bullets are always the same decibel level. The suppressors only change the reading at the muzzle of the gun.

Then, if you want to convert that reading to what it would be if you had measured the volume at a distance "b," use the following formula:
Volume at distance b = X + 10*log_10(a^2/b^2).

And for every time you double the distance, the dB level drops by 6.

My buddy.
Of course we'll love a suppressor. We just want to pay 200 dollars, not 400 dollars.
America was born out of the disdain for the unnecessary taxation from the British Empire and now the average American is needlessly taxed by the government because it trust the rich more than the middle-class or the poor. I say we need another revolution before that 200 dollar tax stamp gets priced up more and more until the only people *allowed* to purchase a gun and a suppressor are the very same people who banned it. I'm not saying screw the law, I'm saying fight it until we're a big enough pain in the ass for suppressors to be untaxed just as your average foregrip or stock before it's too late.
@@ARTEMISXIX id loosely relate it to weed when it was illegal and the prohibition era.... maybe the consequences werent as bad as being caught with nfa items but i feel that if there were enough "outlets" and a mass amount of people who were willing to buy them without paying the tax, eventually the nfa would fuck off... just my opinion. Yea people would get royally fucked by our laws but we already are and no battle is won without casualties.
@@ARTEMISXIX Except the British actually had a reason for those taxes^ The empire fought a war protecting the 13 colonies and it was fucking expensive. The Brits wanted at least some of those costs back from those who benefited from it. If a normal suppressor has 10 or so baffles you should take several suppressors apart and put all of the baffles together to make a super long suppressor and see how quiet it is!
Father Firefighter i think its been done. I think it would cause some high gas issues in semi autos
*Suppressors* are way too regulated, they're expensive because they can't sell them to everyone like they can a gun. I missed Demolition Ranch
Trust me, I'm a doctor....ish.
henrymp that’s exactly what Gamma said. Just twice as long...
I did say it elaborated and did so for those who slept through or never took micro and macro economics!

You can still use the decbel-tester.
You just have to set ut up a few feet away.
You guys get ripped off for silencers, I have a modular (extendable) DPT silencer for my tikka t3x and it cost £250. That's a premium price in the UK. You can buy many silencers for less than £100, no tax stamp either. It's only a piece of metal.

“The guns themselves are not loud, but the bullets are loud.”
Ahhhh yes.

In the UK a 17 hmr suppressor is around £80. A custom made 556 is around £200. You can pick them up cheaper
Maybe bolt action rifles are quieter when supressed , because semi / fully automatic rifles eject the just fired case in less than 1 second after the shot and the soundwaves exit out there as well... Sooo if this is right , then bolt actions should be quieter when supressed / silenced
Test this out Matt!
According to Black Ace's website the sound level from a Remington 700 (308) and a AR-10 is both 147Db.
sparkplug1018 , thanks for the info ;D
Depending on the specific type of gun there are other issues. AKs, for instance, have a lot of noise that comes from the gas block. Also the bolt action will be more quiet when using a good suppressor and subsonic ammo compared to a semi auto using the same of both because the action of a semi auto cycling can be pretty loud.

Its funny how it’s harder to get a suppressor than a gun itself
It's understandable tho. Imagine some emo kid at a school getting their hands on a silencer. I'm surprised it isn't *harder* to get silencers or firearms than it is in US.
huldu if I have to choose between a kid with a silencer or a kid with a weapon, i would choose the silencer. Sure, it hurts if he throw the silencer at you, but a gun shot hurts a bit more.
so a 30 second hail of gunfire with or without a suppressor wont make a difference.

Supply and demand... They have a product many people want, and not everyone makes them. So they charge whatever they want. Some at ridiculous prices.
Not sure if anyone will see this, but if anyone is wondering why this is so cheap -
It is about twice as heavy as any other options. Weight at the end of your rifle is usually where you'll feel it most
It's a double walled suppressor because the materials they use are shit. Expanding on this, stainless steel is both way heavier as well as lasts a shorter time than titanium which is what everything else uses
Won't last as long, and wont be repairable when it breaks (the latter being the case with pretty much all suppressors)
No quick attach mounts
You have to pay a 200 dollar tax stamp anyway. So it's really a difference between 400 dollars and 470 at the end of the day.
Saving up to get a much lighter, much more reliable suppressor from a company with much better customer service seems like a no-brainer for most people who have to wait 9 months to get a suppressor, and need it to last because it's their only one.
or get a $20 dollar thread adapter and a $5 dollar oil filter.
For a 4 of July special you should see if you can light a firework with a bullet or gun
incendiary round might do the trick lol
If all else fails, light off some tannerite.
Sports Mobile maybe with an incendiary round, but I tried that with a firecracker earlier and it didn't work
Dawn Brown scratch that plan then lol. Watch the slowmoguys@youtube.com, they set off something with a bullet, spark from a ricochet.
I've heard tracers will set off fireworks
I like that the suppressor suppresses the sound of the bullet in the gun but the crack with the air and the bullet becomes definitely noticeable
So its 600 dollars in boxing??
Right, but we don't know that it won't either..
And the brand on the box
Gun Nut its almost entirely due to the fact that the people who put the time and energy into buying one have the money to pay whatever they need to to buy one.
They aren't expensive because they need to be, they're expensive because they can be.
X4Alpha, yep. They are expensive because they are restricted. The more you restrict a market the more expensive items within that market get.
hmm.true that..
If matt did make loudenicers, it'd probably be big at some point cause of the demolitia. Anything he does, he makes it look cool, idk
look up blast cans
Always love the introductions. I didn't know he had a twin...
Bruh the cheapest I think is an oil filter 😂😂😂 jk I’m here from mw
K&D Studios same lmao
You can actually legally register an oil filter and convert it to accept the round you want to shoot out of it. Works great in .22lr and is a cheaper way to get a suppressor. However check your local laws, it isn’t legal everywhere.
Matt for all the computer gamers out there. Can you please see HOW MANY MOUSE PADS it takes to stop a bullet thanks!!
What kind of mouse pad? The hard rigid ones, rubbery ones or the generic dollar store foam ones?
Any kind maybe all of them to see with is better to stop a bullet. Like a side by side comparison
He did rubber horse mats
I know that’s different from mouse pads tho
My Knife can go strait through a mouse pad with no force and its dull, now imagine a bullet.
I actually laughed at that intro xD
its cuz people will pay that much, same reason an iphone can be $1000
Tristan Robinson actually it’s more tax related than anything.
Steven Soco no it really isn’t, over half that price is taxes.
Firearms and related products are subject to every normal tax and some special ones only pertaining to them.
@@danielboggan2479 Seems exaggerated, since the sale of one involves a $200 tax stamp
Nitrodasnipa Z about 30% of firearms price is tax
Why it's $1000 for the "better" silencers...
1) Better materials that tend to last longer.
2) Lifetime warranties, even if you have a baffle strike.
3) Research and development.
4) These manufacturers are working in a field that is highly regulated. This slows down production as they must follow very strict procedures about how silencers and their parts are built, stored, handled,etc.. ( Can't build it without a serial number; ..... )
5) Expectation that the finished product is built better than the homebuilt silencers..

KC A shall not be infringed
+KC A
it's unconstitutional
Constitution was written in 1787. Times have changed, grow up.
We just had a shooting here a few days ago, multiple dead (and we live in a 'rich/white city'). Crime committed by someone who REALLY should not own guns (yet he did... numerous of them... and no he isn't an illegal immigrant/colored).
I live in what 'muicans call a "oppressed state". Yet i can go pick up a semi AR15 16" barrel for $500 the same day, with little paperwork (i sign more paperwork going to the dentist to get a root canal done...).
Ronan B what’s your point?
#1 octo rails
#2 blink trigers
Then loudencers
Someone needs to tell mere about this
