Question Rick, if the dimple pattern is supposed to be better through the air, wouldn’t a simulator test not show the full picture because it’s only measuring launch conditions?
Yup, this is what these testers don't get. While yes there is a difference in a dimple pattern for the first few inches of flight, main difference comes later in flight. Now, there might be no diffecnce, because it could all be marketing jargon. However, these should be tested with a trackman outside to see if there is any difference.
Agree. A launch monitor will calculate flight based on assumptions about the ball's flight characteristics. If the dimple pattern does anything then those assumptions are likely wrong.
yeah i was wondering how the wind would affect this ball , i've noticed a shallow dimpled ball like a titleist AVX will cut through wind much better than something designed for more spin / deeper old school dimples, still a great video though

Rick. When you do swing videos in the future; please incorporate camera angle and the slowmo right at 1:00 minute of this video. That might be the most helpful swing example I've ever seen. Thanks for the content and stay safe. P.s. I like your daily walks. Good message!
I play the E6 straight ball, and as for the "straight" claim, it'll save you from one degree of trouble. So instead of being out of bounds, you'll be in the deep rough. Instead of deep rough, you'll be in the light rough. Instead of light rough you'll just stay within the fairway. Compared to many many other balls I've tried, E6 makes a tangible difference for me. And yet it still stops well on approach shots and chipping around the green. Surprisingly so for a "game improvement ball" that often spin like rocks. Of course, if you put an absolutely terrible swing on it, you can still hook it or slice it to kingdom come and lose your ball, it's a good ball but it's not magic 😄
I second. Too bad Dunlop brand has had so many issues. I had super success with many of the Dunlop ball like the Total Performance (the ball that does it all)... Moebius and their 65U urethane offerings were very, very unique.
Mike Shaw came up with the idea and I did the original dimple patterns using Moebius triangles..... circa 1989 Mike also led the design of the original DDH in mid 70's along with Bob Haynes. Despite the 65u blurb the original design was solely for extra distance. Ad men didn't thi k the public would buy such a different looking ball.
@@RickShielsPGA Sorry to disagree, but even if it is about contact and energy transfer - any change in dimple pattern will have an effect/affect on the aerodynamics. It could be plus or minus. It's possible that dimple pattern to create better energy transfer actually causes more drag and thus offsets the effects of the energy transfer.
@@RickShielsPGA on the back of the box the club speed says under 105mph. Would the ball potentially be more helpful for me who swings slower as opposed to you?
As a relatively beginner golfer, I use the Bridgestone e6's. When I get better I will bump up to the better Bridgestones. I love these golf balls...also its probably a bit supersticious, mental, habit for me to play the Bridgestone
The GC Quad machine is amazing that it can develop so much information in the micro-second of impact and flight for the first few feet. But how does it account for aerodynamic differences in the balls to determine their flight characteristics? I don't believe it can...so two identical construction balls with different dimple patterns could appear to be identical on the GC Quad but vastly different in how high they go and how far they fly. Hitting them out in the real world would be the only way to show if the dimple pattern on the Bridgestone actually works or not.
Sand off the dimples and play the ball. It will go between half and three quarters of the distance. Why? It is all to do with the turbulence of the air over the surface of the ball. When you add dimples you affect what is known as the Reynolds number. The lower the number the more laminate the flow, the higher the number the more turbulent. Dimple patterns therefore help, optimise spin and flight characteristics. Ball manufacturers adjust dimple patterns to improve ball, performance by optimising the Reynolds number across a range of ball strikes. So, do not be surprised to see different dimple patterns; it is fluid mechanics at work.
Trajectory is everything in golf shots. It is what makes drives roll for extra distance after carry and approach shots not roll off of greens. The challenge is designing a ball which can do both: lower trajectory for drives, approach shots which drop like mortar shells. Since most shots are lost around the green I value the ‘drops like a mortar’ quality with mid and even long irons vs distance off the tee.
I'm sure these claims of more speed and more spin are as compared to their other "E" series golf balls, not their premium balls. A comparison test against the TM Tour Response or Titleist Tour Soft would be interesting and useful for us to see.
One thing my grandfather always said, rarely will equipment have an effect on where the ball goes, or how far it travels, the biggest factor is the nut in the end of the handle.
I would love to see a review of the Titleist Prestige golf ball. Only sold in Japan and at a higher price point that the ProV1. It performed longer and softer than the ProV1 for me.
Back in 1978 My first job was with a testing company and we tested a dozen golf at a club in Arizona. The balls were hit by local pros and college players. One the balls , an Omega , had this dimple pattern . It performed well but did not beat some of the balls that the pros normally use. They kept the design for a few years and then discontinued it.
Not sure how fast he'll bounce back after this one... Reading his list of injuries is like reading the damage on a motorcyclist after a big off... I'm DEVISTATED for him, he was just getting his mojo back....💔
Using the Tiger ball now(previously pro v1). Cheaper and feels softer than the Pro v1, which I like. Reminds me of the Titleist tour balata/professional 90/100 for those old enough to remember them!😂 they are definitely more durable than an old skool balata/pro 90/100!
Hi Rick. I looking to change the balls I use. Am currently using Bridgestone E6. I am a 14 handicap and improving. I have been down to 11 in the past. I find these balls good but looking for a more spinny ball around the green. I using the Taylor made MG3 wedges. What’s balls would You recommend to be looking at without spending a fortune? Great videos by the way.
So they took Top Flite dimple in dimple tech from 15 years ago, and Callaway hexagon dimple tech from like 10 years ago and mashed then together. Brilliant.
Exactly. This is a toe-dipper for the people who only use Top Flites and want a slightly "improved" ball without forking over a lot of cash. It's not a ProV or TP5, but I don't know who is expecting it to be. I'll be honest and say I'm tempted to try out a dozen, but I also really like the Vice that I have and occasionally throw in a TP5 when I feel like I'm all over the place.
i finally broke down and bough a dozen. Played 9 holes with it last night; the spin on wedges was fine (it was never going to back up on me 20', but that's a good thing --- zipping balls back unexpectedly is bad for us amateurs). Distance on my irons was exceptional, for my swing, on iron shots, these types of balls tend to fly further and straighter. On my driver shots, Pro V's beat this thing all day, but i'm not sure by how much. I didn't hit it as far as i hit my Pro V's with driver, but that's my swing, FWIW.
I love the Bridgestone golf balls I played the tiger edition golf ball and what I like about it is I get the field the distance and I honestly think they cut through the wind a lot better than your Titleist and other balls
Thanks for another great test, Rick. But I do have an important tip: if you test a material or object relative to another, hit the shits alternately with the one and the other. That eliminates the influence of your shape of the day, among many other variables.
Need to test this outside Rick, surely one of the key points about dimples, is how they cut through the air resistance. You can't test that on an indoor simulator.
Rick, thanks for the review and all your content. I normally use a Titleist Velocity and recently switched over to the Bridgestone Contact. I’m a 17 handicap and feel I play better with the “Contact”. My balls seem to go straighter and a couple yards further. I’ve also seen more control around the green. Could you do a head to head between the velocity and the contact?

Rick, I was one of the testers for this golf ball about a month before it came out and I have to say I was shocked at this balls performance in the wind. I just happened to test this ball on two fairly windy days (15-25mph). The wind could not touch this ball, it absolutely just cut through the air. I am wondering if this technology will go into their Tour line because I currently play the Tour BX and I am seriously considering changing which is bad for Bridgestone because I will now spend less lol. I know you can’t quite fully test outdoors yet but it’s worry a try when you can because it’s performance in the wind is where it really shines.
Rick question, whats a good driver for someone wanting to practice driving to get better with? price can be either high or low, no contest there. Thanks mate!
Surely you have to hit outdoors fully length on the course to see if the dimples effect ball flight. Your launch monitor just measures ball speed, launch angle and spin and uses the same algorithum to estimate the results for every ball hit.
I signed up for the test play program. And got two of these balls sent to me about a month ago. Neat idea but they’re a little too soft for me. I like a firmer ball and didn’t really notice much of a difference but I am a fan of Bridgestone.
I would love for u to review the chromax golf balls. I am not the most accurate golfer and am interested in those golf balls because they may help me find my shots easier. But I am wondering what proformance I am giving up for the brighter balls compared to the volvic vivid I shoot now
Hey Rick! Huge fan of yours and recently have taken up golf. Your instructional videos have been a huge help!! I'm currently deployed in Japan and I was wondering if you ever do any giveaways to military?
I prefer srixion, mainly the cost and feel. The bridgestone e6 is nice. I got my 1st hole-in-one with it. Callaway has nice feel. Wilson duo or 50/50 are nice. I hit the Tiger bridgestone balls. WOW! $44 A dzn doesn't pay to play them.
Rick ! This golf ball is super good if you are a beginner or a high handicapper .This golf ball will beat the prov1 if you are a weekend golfer Hands down guaranteed.
More material might equal less overall compression. Also the air flow boundary layer could be less disturbed with the shallow dimple, increasing drag. For a good test though, it should be tested outside.
Question, if you have a ball and it's technology is different dimples, does it make sense to use the launch monitor? It can sense spin and speed, but not airflow around the ball. I assume it's using some predertemined metric for air resistance.
Rick, how do you expect to test the differences in dimple pattern on a simulator? Different dimple patterns will create different turbulent flows around the ball, which could effect how the ball reacts to spin, speed, and wind. The simulator does not have the ability to read the dimple pattern change it's ball physics. To properly test this you'll have to go outside and use a radar ball tracker like the Trackman or something.
The reason that this can be tested indoors is because of the package’s claims. It claimed to have higher energy return and that’s something that gc quad would pick up
With the E12 Contact being a 70 compression ball, is it possible that your swing speed would be a touch too quick? High speed swings on low compression balls waste energy transfer by overcompressing the core. They can also over amplify side spin causing shots to go more off line. Bought a dozen yesterday to try on a par 3 course today. Normally play the Inesis 900 balls and shoot 90 on regular size courses. Looking to keep the score at 36 or less today.
Do golf balls go “off”. I am planning to start playing again after probably nearly 15 yrs and have 28 new balls. Ranging from Pro V1 382, Calloway blue, Strata and Maxfli titanium. Will they be ok to use or should they be consigned to the practice bag ?
@@hotshot14972 it is accurate but the dimple patterns do make a difference. This particular ball could cut through the wind better or fly better in outdoor conditions. GC quad is a great tool but it can't tell you everything.
I'd be interested to see ball reviews and comparisons for the cheaper stuff Joe Average uses. I bought 48 Slazenger balls from Sports Direct recently as a good example. Wondering if they offer such reduced performance, and should I buy a better ball for monthly medals etc
I have no interest in paying more than £20 per dozen for balls, and I like a soft ball. Not much to choose between Callaway marathon soft; supersoft; srixon soft feel; and Bridgestone E6. For me I'm currently working through a couple boxes of E6's. Really like them.
I got a quick question Mr. Rick. I just got a like new used callaway x hot iron set for 250.00 US dollars. Was that a good deal and what u think about those irons? I did my own research but would love to hear what a pro like u thinks about it. Love your videos!
Rick I wonder if you should have hit some Pro V1s at the same time as a reference point. With your ongoing training to increase clubhead speed, it would have been good to have a current point of reference as to how many yards you gained from the ball vs the training.
Godspeed to a prompt & full recovery, Tiger. And, back to spanking Bridgestone “Tiger” golf balls. I enjoy Ricks product reviews, especially golf balls. However, IMO- Rick appears biased towards the ProV golf ball over any other brand, even Ricks excellent performance results comparing the ProV to the Bridgestone “Tiger” B XS golf balls. Personal preference, perhaps? Also enquiring if anyone can provide quality feedback on the performance of the Mizuno RB566 V golf ball and if it’s value for cost -v- similar standard golf balls? The Bridgestone e12 may have an amended dimple pattern but it’s not as unique as the (3-piece) Mizuno RB566 V which has 566 dimples with a raised centre in each dimple. Another product to try Rick?
Hey Rick how is that swing speed training going? How are you liking those speed stick or whatever they are called? Have you been able to see a difference yet?
By straighter, I don't believe they mean if it starts on line, I believe they mean shot shape or reduced side spin. Would love to know what your average curvature distance is in relation to a more premium ball
Ball COR is already capped by the R&A and USGA, and maxed out by the major manufacturers, so the dimple pattern would only affect aerodynamics, which can only be evaluated outdoors on full distance shots (not into a net)
Hey Rick and people in the comments. I want to switch to a ball different then Titleist do you have a specific ball you suggest. I am a decent long hitter with what I would say average 270 at the age of 15 nearly 16 but Bridgestone wasn't the best for me last time I tried them.
You should do a review on the Chromax neon green M5 golf ball. “Easiest ball to find” and gives a “competitive visual advantage” slightly gimmicky but above average performance considering.
Thanks for the review. Would a 80-90 mph swing get more distance compared to other brands like Srixon Qstar tour, TM Tour Response ? That test would be interesting. Also how do the other brands perform on spin n peak height.
You need to review Snell golf balls.... Snell was the co-founder of your beloved Titleist Pro V1 he went off on his own... his balls are awesome and they're considerably cheaper than Pro-V ones

When Tiger first signed with Nike, one of the first Nike Golf balls had a very close design to these Bridgestones.
Bridgestone manufactured that ball just put the NIKE insignia on it. Made in the same factory
Rick your swing is looking sooooo good. 👌🏼
Thanks Rick! Just saved me some money. I had that ball on my list of "budget" balls to try. I'll stick with Snell and Vice for this season. Cheers 🍻
Do golf balls go “off”. I am planning to start playing again after probably nearly 15 yrs and have 28 new balls. Ranging from Pro V1 382, Calloway blue, Strata and Maxfli titanium. Will they be ok to use or should they be consigned to the practice bag ?
Used to use Srixon soft feel now I use the Z star. I like the extra distance.
Srixon soft used to be my go to but now it feels like hitting a wet sponge. I use Q star now.
@@busa89 yeah I switched to the Z star to. I like the penetrating ball flight.
I just played a tournament with this ball. I came in 3rd for long drive, and won a closest to the pin contest.
Gotta hit that thing at the range. See what it does in actual air, not what the quad thinks it’ll do
You realize that GC Quad is incredibly accurate right? The ball flight on the quad is the actual ball flight you’re going to get
@@hotshot14972 it is accurate but the dimple patterns do make a difference.
What is your status developing swing using speedsticks?
I often use Vice Pro
I use Bridgestone B RX always will
I got a quick question Mr. Rick. I just got a like new used callaway x hot iron set for 250.00 US dollars. Was that a good deal and what u think about those irons? I did my own research but would love to hear what a pro like u thinks about it. Love your videos!
Reminds me of the Maxfi’s in the 90s
How does it stack up against the Vice Pro plus?
Rick I wonder if you should have hit some Pro V1s at the same time as a reference point. With your ongoing training to increase clubhead speed, it would have been good to have a current point of reference as to how many yards you gained from the ball vs the training.
Maybe it's a placebo effect but they seem straighter and farther on short iron shots. BTW I am a mid swing speed golfer.
Rick, what’s your all-time favorite club to hit? thank you for all the tips and tricks!!! i absolutely love your vids!!! keep up the great work!!!!!
How would you compare the e12 Contact to the RZN that you recently tested?
Honest analysis....
That was a very well done review. Keep it up rick we look forward to your outcome after this pandemic shutdown. Also, love the walks!
This ball definitely reduces side spin 100%
Ball COR is already capped by the R&A and USGA, and maxed out by the major manufacturers, so the dimple pattern would only affect aerodynamics, which can only be evaluated outdoors on full distance shots (not into a net)
I’m a huge Bridgestone ball fan and now I’m bummed it made no difference! Lol thanks Rick!! Great video.
Please do a review on Cut golf balls. I play the Cut blue golf ball and it is great
Hey Rick and people in the comments. I want to switch to a ball different then Titleist do you have a specific ball you suggest. I am a decent long hitter with what I would say average 270 at the age of 15 nearly 16 but Bridgestone wasn't the best for me last time I tried them.
Bridgestone is my go to golf ball. Just like the feel of them.
Same on the E6
You should do a review on the Chromax neon green M5 golf ball. “Easiest ball to find” and gives a “competitive visual advantage” slightly gimmicky but above average performance considering.
Measuring a dimple pattern on a sim. Atta boy. That's that quality content.
I thought the E12 was for slower swing speeds of the average golfer? < 105 mph
Agreed
Day 11
of asking rick to show us his whole club collection
I have been doing the same.Today is day 41 for me
@@seanmacgiobuin368 I’ll be looking for your comments to like from now on to get rick to see one of our comments.
He’d have the best collection
Thanks for the review. Would a 80-90 mph swing get more distance compared to other brands like Srixon Qstar tour, TM Tour Response ? That test would be interesting. Also how do the other brands perform on spin n peak height.
Precept always had it was bridgestone rubber only
Love to see Rick play Danny Maude to great pros
Will you retest these on the course? I'm assuming the GC4 doesn't account for the aerodynamic differences of the different dimples
You need to review Snell golf balls.... Snell was the co-founder of your beloved Titleist Pro V1 he went off on his own... his balls are awesome and they're considerably cheaper than Pro-V ones
