  • How to corner and how to improve your motocross riding in general... without being or paying for a coach. I know this is based around teaching my 5yr old... but these are things anyone can try. Help yourself or your kid to be a faster, safer rider with a few simple tips that you can learn at home!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a motocross coach, I'm just someone trying to figure out a way to improve MY riding as well as my little boys.... and I'm sharing a few things I figured out over the last few months. If you feel any of these things aren't quite right (or could have been done better) PLEASE do drop a comment below... I'll try my best to put in an update in here as to what I said/did and what would have worked better. At the end of the day no one is perfect and we're all learning!
That being said, these tips genuinely completely changed how both me and Harley are riding, and most of what we learned we did while at home... either sitting on the bike, playing with a toy or colouring in a picture of a track to work out what we needed to do and when. IT WORKED so well!!!
    THE PHYSICS:
OK... the geeky science bit... so turning a corner involves forces. Something we all learned in GCSE Science... but this steps in towards A level Physics. (Any Physics bods out there care to drop a comment to explain this better please, be my guest... hopefully I haven't confused it!!)
    1. You have the force of gravity... acting on your mass, keeping us from floating off into space - sometimes referred to as 'mg' (f = mg... force = mass x gravity)
    2. Then you have Normal force - the force that effectively stops gravity from sucking you through the Earth, or your butt through a chair when you sit down! Think of it acting equally to but opposite to gravity.
    3. When you turn a corner the friction between your tyres and the surface is met with centripetal force (actual force) that pulls the rotating object (wheel) inwards towards the centre of rotation whereas centrifugal force (which is an apparent force) makes it feel like you are being pushed away from the centre of the turn. Centrifugal (pseudo force) and centripetal forces are effectively the same thing, but with different frames of reference... they are the exact same force but in opposite directions. Friction works with centripetal force to allow the bike to turn... and not just allow the centrifugal force to take over and send you to the outside of the turn!
SO... in a very very shortened down version in bikers terms... the tighter the turn, the more you need to lean the bike. But there comes a critical point in how far you can lean a bike before you experience a life changing loss of tyre grip.
In MotoGP to increase the speed of the turn you need to increase the effect of the 'lean' by making your 'mg' work harder for you (because there is only so far a bike can physically lean)... the bike is at (or close to) the maximum lean angle and you shift your body weight INTO the turn. Just like Valentino Rossi as he drags his elbows round turns. This only works if you have plenty of friction to work against the centripetal force... so this doesn't work on looser surfaces usually found in motocross.
In motocross... or riding a road bike across looser surface... you can increase the effect of your 'mg' by counter leaning. Again the bike remains leaning at, or near to, it's maximum lean angle but you shift your weight to the outside edge of your seat, making your body appear almost to sit upright while your bike is leaning into the turn.
No lean at all and your bike risks neutralising the effect of Gravity and Normal force... allowing centripetal force and friction to take over... ending in you having a hug with the mud. Oh how I wish I could draw diagrams to include in this description box!!!! To see an incredible video on how this works please check out this link... it isn't my video but the maker inspired the introduction of this one (in his video about how your grip is wrong):

Do YOU fully understand why you use each piece of technique that you are using? Do you understand the physics of a corner? Share your thoughts on this video below... have I got it right?!
Some of the videography was done by ‪@DanielLornie‬ and some by myself... if it looks nicely in focus you know who shot it 😅🥴

Another awesome video, you guys keep knocking it out of the park 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for answering my previous questions. My son almost has all the gear thanks to you 🙏🏼
We have just purchased the tigo body armour thanks to a description on one of Harley’s old videos (Revvi bike tricks by a 2 year old, youngest stunt rider)
Is he wearing knee pads under his clothes as well? If so what ones? We are struggling to find ones that fit well and don’t annoy our just turned 3 year old

Hi! Thats so awesome to hear!!! Yes Harley wears knee pads under his mx trousers, he wears the GFORM Pro X3 youth knee pad... if they come up a bit big put a small fold in the side with a stitch until they grow and cut the stitch ❤️

This is a very good video mum should write a book on these experiences the books should be the chronicles of Rockstar Harley a tip you want a bigger rotor on the front wheel a small rotor in the back wheel when he gets better he can learn how to do crazy ivens

A bigger diameter rotor on the front wheel a small rotor on the back wheel this will help in turns better a bigger front rotor will give you better steering I don't like balanced breaking this is when you have same size rotors in the front and back practice on a mountain bike in pasty mud to get a feel for the turns
