Love the old original footage of 4014 from back in the 1950's. AWESOME! Thank you.
Glad we could bring it to you! Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
Thank you for putting this up. I've been a fan of steam engines since 1957 when I was 3 years old and saw one up close at a station in New York City. I've been keeping track of #4014 for the last five years since it was pulled out of Pomona destined for the Union Pacific shops. I bought an HO scale Rivarossi Big Boy #4001, many years ago. If I can find the proper decals I will renumber it as #4014. I'm very happy to see #4014 brought back to life. It saddens me to see things of history put aside and left to rust. The Big Boy is a monstrosity and a good example of what could be done back in the days it was first built. I'll never cease to be amazed by the complexity of steam power on railroads.
Had the joy of seeing this big fella as he rumbled through Kansas and Oklahoma late in 2019. UP made him have a diesel in tow (just in case, of course) and the diesel engineer said he basically was just enjoying the ride. In addition to the diesel (a GE, if I recall correctly) the train was comprised of about 10 cars. Big Boy wasn't even breathing hard with that small train - I'd really like to see him take on a train worthy of his power.
All these grand machines on your channel, with narration by a lovely lady - you're gonna get a lot of subscriptions....
not just a quick fix...4014 is essentially a brand new loco with a looong lifespan.Well done Union Pacific.
Agreed... A masterwork by the UP Steam Shop.
The whole world was watching and waiting for 4014 to return to the land of the living. Congratulations Union Pacific. To all those who have made it happen we salute you.
It was an audacious idea and an awesome job! Thank you for watching! -DeAnn

Love to see 4014 Big Boy running again. Thanks for taking us there on location!!
You are most welcome! Our crew is still out there, so watch for more in the weeks ahead!
Not the prettiest steam engine about but definitely the most impressive. Well done to everyone involved in this amazing restoration.
It’s nice to see a running steam engine like this one. The size of it is stunning.
It's about half the length of a Boeing 747!!!
Had the extreme pleasure of seeing this unit in as it toured Arizona in 2019. As always DeAnn, it's a great pleasure to see you hosting these episodes!
Thank you for the compliment! :-) A railfan friend also saw 4014 in Arizona in 2091...I'm jealous. -DeAnn
Having been born on the tenth of May I have been fascinated by railroads since I found out the completion of the transcontinental railroad was on that day. I can remember when steam trains were still used on short lines in New England. I like Diesels but I love steam and to see these engines charging up hill today is great! Thank you for the film!
You are welcome for the video! And, may I say, happy birthday! 😀
The crews that ran 4014 back in the 50s probably would never imagine that she would be running once again today!
I am sure you are correct. They just saw their charges as a tool. Something to get the job done. Don't get me wrong, I know they really loved their machines, but still, it was a tool. Thank you for watching! -DeAnn
Thanks for putting this video together, lots of great clips.
Thank you. A great compliment coming from you... I have seen your work and enjoy it. Again, THANKS!
The "Big Boy" locomotives have been a favorite of mine since my dad introduced me to photos of these monsters back in the early 1950s. It's been an unfulfilled dream of mine to witness one of these awesome machines in action, but as it is, I probably won't get that dream fulfilled. A redeeming factor, though, is these great videos of a restored #4014 here on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing.
It is truly an amazing moment in Steam Locomotive restoration. Years and Untold dollars were spent to bring this monster back to the rails. I sincerely hope that Union Pacific feels they get a good pay back out of it. Because then maybe we'll see even more!
Have you seen 4014 in person yet? I have twice once in Duluth Minnesota and once here in Wisconsin I was was originally going to see her out in Cheyenne but I heard she was coming this way she is something to say the first big boy I saw was 4017 up here in Green Bay Great videos appreciate the time and effort that went into putting them together!
I found your channel because of a shout out from Jaw tooth. I liked and subscribed.
DeAnn here... thanks! We will try not to disappoint!
So grateful to the UP and crew! Well done! Never thought we'd see one in steam again.
Agreed...and yet here we are! 😀
Nice video DeAnn
Long live the king of the rails big boy 4014.
Hey Deanne, keep up that awesome enthusiam :)
Thank you for this. And may I say that you look lovely. Have an amazing day!
DeAnn here: Thank you for the compliment on the video and me. :-) I hope you have an amazing day too!
really awesome! my compliments
Thank you very much! We tried to do a nice quick look at both some old footage and some brand new footage. 👍
Love it, love it, 4014 is great.
When the pandemic is past us... I hope to see 4014 run past us again! :-)
Having been born on one of the greatest days in history .I want to thank the u.p. for bringing back the the greatest symbol of class .hp. and majestic beauty this country has ever had . thanks steam crew for maybe these crews will inspire a new class of steam crews that love to keep heritage alive thanks Deanna for bringing this video for us all .long live the 844 Challenger and the war horse of the rail the bigboy
Agreed! And Happy Birthday! 🎂
Luuuuv seeing those period clips of BB without that DAMN diesel unit.
I know what you're saying, but... Unfortunately the diesel is a nod to reality and modern safety. The diesel is not really used to push, or pull the train behind, but for dynamic braking. For all the great technology stepped into that Big Boy, dynamic braking is not one of them. Also a diesel can provide Head End Power for the train. And, of course it's also available in case of any problems with the steam engine... You don't want to foul up this main line with an excursion.
I grew up in a small town of Elgin TX I feel in love with trains in that town my grandmother took me see it the first time I was afraid at first the surprising thing the Missouri Kansas Texas and Southern pacific I seen train stop just to Elgin south side BBQ just who remembers the old south side comment me back
Thanks for sharing! Do you miss the green of the MKT? -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot yes I miss big green I seen some videos that I found if you have more videos I would love them Merry Christmas
Great video and beautiful shots!
My only gripe is that Big Boy is a he, not a she. Hence the name “Big Boy”.
That "he or she" discussion is an interesting one. Traditionally large machines have been called "she" or "her". For instance the Sir Nigel Gresley, a steam engine running in the United Kingdom, certainly has a male name but is always referred to as a her.

844 is helping her brother for the debut 🔥🔥🔥🔥
We just heard from Union Pacific that they plan on putting 4014 on the road this Summer or Fall! Yay!! -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot I'm so excited 🤩🤩🤩
844 taking a back seat again to the BB. I am still amazed at the difference in sound of the two locomotives.
Hi DeAnne! Good stuff! But I'm not sure that the Big Boy struts her stuff. Lol! Kinda' iffy' on that one. Ha Ha! Maybe he struts his stuff. Always good to see you my dear! Cheers, Danny
Oh, and like number 16 too!
WITH SCENES FROM LAST OF THE GIANTS VOLUME THREE OVER SHERMAN HILL
Thanks Rob, I'll have to check out that volume! Cheers, Danny
This has got to be a special 3 DVD Set on this. It has to be so I can buy it and put it with my other DVD collection....next to the Challenger !
Pentrex does now have three (really nice) DVDs on the 4014: "Big Boy 4014 Returns to Steam", "Southwest Big Boy" and "Big Boy, Greetings from Kansas City".
Thanks for this video I sincerely hope that Pentrex is coming out with a DVD of the Excursion race to Ogden
Pentrex is coming out with a DVD and Blu-ray! (Get it from RailfanDepot! 😀)
@@Railfandepot I can't get it right now they're probably going to film the return trip to Cheyenne but I will keep my eyes out for your preview
I don't think the show will be out until near June.
@@Railfandepot no problem I've got time to wait but I'm very excited to have a new pentrex DVD I don't know how long it's been when they came out with a new one let alone here Dave Drua's (correct me if I misspelled his last name) voice

DeAnn here, I am originally from Michigan. The Muskegon area... I remember seeing a lot of Grand Trunk! Thank you for the compliment on our work here!
Impressive! Both the locomotive and the work ad dedication!!
What is the knocking in just about every video of it running?
The rhythmic kerchunk? I am not an expert, but I know that is a feature of, I think, the superpower characteristics of the engine. Someone who knows more about it than me, I hope can come on and comment.
844 taking a back seat again to the BB. I am still amazed at the difference in sound of the two locomotives. You would think they would be similar.
So cool, seeing her actually running back in the day - as opposed to your imagination...
Yes, and that film is such nice color, especially for the 1950s!
DeAnn, I love your amazing accent. Where are you from? Thank you for this amazing upload !
DeAnn here: I'm a Midwestern gal. Michigan (Grand Trunk!) and Indiana. Thank you for the compliment! 😀
@@Railfandepot You are quite welcome !

Any more Content coming out since a year ago?
It would be nice to see big boy and challenger run as a double header/ in a consist...
They said none of the 8 remaining big boys, would ever see service AGAIN we all know now that they were wrong
Yes, and aren't we glad that they were wrong! There are also a couple that could still be restored. They're in pretty good condition. The ones in Scranton, in Green Bay and Denver. However, I'd love to see the one remaining Southern Pacific Cab Forward, still in California, restored. Wouldn't that be great!
They meant none except 4014. The rest are parts for 4014 now. Besides, you seen one you've seen them all.
I don't think they will let 4014 get dirty like he was in the 50s
I am guessing you are correct. :-)
Great video! But a slight correction, Big Boy is a "he" not a "she" :)
his little brother is challenger 3985 fef-2 # 844 you can call his cousin
I like to refer to 844 as a "she"--beautiful lines and silver paint on her drivers and lead engine. For me, 4014 is a "he"--a brute. No task is too heavy for him.
That "he or she" discussion is an interesting one. Traditionally large machines have been called "she" or "her". For instance the Sir Nigel Gresley, a steam engine running in the United Kingdom, certainly has a male name but is always referred to as a her. I always refer 4014 as a she
@@michaelbenitez539 It's a big boy, not a big girl. It's a he. Well, in reality, it is an inanimate machine with no feelings or thoughts, but still
I live on the Little Rock / FortSmith Line of thé Union Pacific (former MoPac) in NLR--i would love to see an in cab video-thé line passes through the Arkansas River Valley between the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains.
I'm not sure we have any in-cab of that line, but did you see our cab ride on the Cuba Sub? That's ex-Frisco, but awfully close to you. ua-cam.com/video/LlMYV2bwl2Y/v-deo.html
@@Railfandepot Im sure there isnt-I wish there was! Thanks!

To many moving parts , DDA40X is there glory now !!!! UPAC
2013-2019.
They said it could not be done
They said it was too big and too heavy
They were wrong
And aren't we glad they were wrong! :-)
UPAC should be there modern badge
He’s back, and he’s ready to outhaul the 3985s record. And these engines actually only had about 4230 horsepower, but 114k pounds of tractive effort. Find me a better whistle I dare you.
If you're talking about the Big Boys, here's their real power
HP: 6,290
TE: 135,375 lbf
09trainfan oh, so it is. Thanks for the polite correction
@@CoalChrome You're welcome :)
Try 7,000 and more, this engine was getting ready for a up grade, before they retired it.
Why where they using the Challenger’s tender?
They only have so many tenders available, and 3985 is laid-up right now, freeing up her tender. To get two steam locomotives out on the main these days takes two tenders each (water and oil)... so that makes 4 tenders when both 4014 and 844 are out, as they were this May.
This is hot...4014 is hot, D'Anne is hot...thank you
MAX & RUBY
4014 looks more polished in 2019
No doubt part of the restoration was a good shine! :-)
Does this engine still use coal or is it a gas turbine now
When UP rebuilt 4014, they changed over to oil. So it is an oil burner now. -Tim
How many times are you going to BEG me to subscribe and SPAM in one video?
DeAnn did not ask once, not one single time, for anyone to subscribe. NOT ONCE. There were two small graphics with a subscribe button, but that's it. No one is begging. I suggest if it bothers you that much, don't subscribe.
I subscribed just for the old gas turbine and Diesel content. I remember steam as a kid in the 1950's and history explains why it was replaced by Diesel-Electric. Steam was a pain in the ass to maintain and operate, and wasn't cost effective.
NEVER GiVE UP
Is big boy only going to haul passengers.. It seems a waste if the engine was restored to just haul passengers.
When it's main purpose was heavy freight...
Union Pacific is being quite tight-lipped about her future schedule. There's so much interest though, I just can't imagine them not sending 4014 over, say the original Golden Spike route, with some Freight.
HAPPY thanksgiving Deann, and big boy is a she
Happy Thanksgiving. Big Boy does sound like a he, not a she, but as you may know, in English large machines are properly referred to by female pronouns. It can be incongruous at times! Happy Thanksgiving!! -DeAnn
