HA-MPB, Kamov Ka-26 - Blade Tracking Procedures, Test Flight

  • Season start in Őcsény Airfield.
Winter-storage time is finished, MPB was removed from the hangar for her 43rd season. After some inspection, a pretty easy cold start came...
I tried to record every important movement of the blade tracking procedure, because it is a FAQ what is happening during this process. Basically, each blades get different colors (3:35) (No1.: red, No2.: green, No3.: blue), the point is to make them run on the same track so to make the three colors as close as possible to each other on the indicator. (10:10) The test is performed on 70% and 96% Rotor RPM, each blades can be adjusted with the dinamic rod and the trim tab of the blade for better results.
This airframe was produced in Kumertau (Russia) in 1977 as the 9th airframe of the 61st batch. She started her career as a crop duster helicopter in the fleet of MÉM RSz, Hungary. In the mid '90s a private company bought her and she got to Balatonkeresztúr with another Ka-26, HA-MMG. This Kamov was mainly used for sightseeing flights above lake Balaton and sometimes for parachute dropping too. After 2000, the number of the passengers became less and less, MPB switched for agricultural works with a new homebase, Kéthely.
In 2016 another company bought her and she dislocated to Őcsény Airfield, where she can be found nowadays.
Kamov Ka-26 was invented by N.I. Kamov in the middle of the 1960s, basically for agricultural tasks. It has two Vedeneyev M14-V-26, 10,16 liters radial engines with 9 cylinders and 325 hp each. The engine was produced with an iron cooler fan due to the relatively low airspeed of the helicopter, which gives a really unique siren sound as it works. Used petrol is AVGas100LL, maximum range of the helicopter is approximately 330 miles.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________
    Szezonkezdet az Őcsényi Repülőtéren.
A téli tárolásnak vége, MPB újra kikerült a hangárból a 43 szezon megkezdésére.
A Ka-26-os helikopter N.I. Kamov által került kifejlesztésre az 1960-as évek közepén, kifejezetten mezőgazdasági feladatok ellátására. Erőforrása két darab 10,16 literes, egyenként 325 lóerős, 9 hengeres Vegyenyejev M14-V-26 típusú csillagmotor. A viszonylag alacsony sebesség miatt a két motorra egy-egy öntöttvas hűtőventillátor került felszerelésre, ennek köszönheti egyedi, sikító hangját. A motor AVGas100LL típusú repülőbenzinnel működik, a helikopter maximális hatótávolsága körülbelül 530 kilométer.

Seems to work because it flies ok after adjustment.
Very impressive for the compact size it is and its purpose.
A bit noisy, otherwise it's fine.

I did that once back in the 80's and was terrified as I brought the stick closer to the marked rotating blades. I finally swapped seats with the pilot and I ran the engine up and he used the stick with tape to check blade tracking. It was interesting to say the least. I had my hand on the collective and was told not to lift the helicopter off the ground.

@@alikalany6586 All it was is a long wooden pole which was long enough to extend above the main rotor blades. Protruding outwards near the top of the pole were 2 dowel pins about 10cm long, one above where the rotor blades would be tracking and another below. A piece of wide masking tape was stretched between the two dowel pins. On the rotor blade ends, different colored grease pencils were used to mark the ends. The helicopter was started up and power was applied so the rotor blades would be at their optimum speed. The collective was increased almost to the point of lifting off at which time a person holding the stick which was firmly planted in the ground perpendicular to the blades would bring the top end of the stick with dowel pins slowly towards the rotor blades until they just barely made contact with masking tape.
Afterwards, an individual could look at the tape which would have markings from the grease pencils, indicating how the blades were tracking.

I have 2 questions: 1) is the 2 stroke oil mixed before fueling the helicopter or is there a separate oil tank and mixed in operation? 2) What is the lifting weight capability? Bonus question: is it true that all the replacement parts are made in Hungary?
EDIT: I just found out that the engines are 4 cycle, so please disregard the oil question.

Are these helicopters expensive? How expensive is to operate them? I read online that Kamov tried to make a single jet engine model k-126 but never went into production. These look to be operated by farmers so it gives the impression that they are not super expensive to get. The Russians make a new twin engine version Ka-226 but they are 5 million a piece!

    • @TomiAviation
      @TomiAviation  3 роки тому +1

The purchase price is quite low but the operation and maintenance prices are pretty expensive due to the engines are not economical and it is hard to get spare parts. Despite this, Ka-26 is still the best type for agricultural purposes. Ka-226 is a blind track in my opinion.

This helicopter from Russia did not have a single parallel or perpendicular part. Production using hammers, axes and sledgehammers excluded the possibility of parallelism and perpendicularity. These helicopters did not even have interchangeable spare parts. Having purchased a spare part, it had to be processed with a hammer and file to the size you needed.
