- Well y'all, it took way longer than I expected it to, but I finally got the engine out. Unfortunately, my problems may have gotten that much worse. Now, I'm not sure how to move forward just yet. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed, but I'm still in good spirits. Each obstacle is a learning experience, so I'll take this lesson and keep moving forward!
Leave your thoughts on what I should do below! I'm open to a lot of options at the moment. Whatever it is, it's gonna take some time due to budget, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Great job not giving up man also just cuz u have head gaskets leaking does not mean motor is junk!!
Man built what you have.
I would head to my local pick n pull and get you a 351 out of a 94-96 F250 van/truck and build it! They are roller engines like the 302! With the pistons from your 302 connected with the rods in the 351and a $400 eagle 3.85 crank from Jegs/Summit, it makes a badass 393 stroker!! Currently waiting on the crank to build mine!!
Hold your head up high pulling the motor yourself in its own is something to be proud of. I've blown headgaskets alot in 302s if the cylinders look good when you pop the heads off. Take those to a machine shop in town buy some head gaskets from your autopart store and head bolts slap it back together.
It’s coming apart and I’ll see how bad it is. But either way, I’m definitely gonna keep going!
@@wheeldmediadefinitely recommend fel-pro gaskets if you doing anything to the motor build wise
Coolant may have got in the oil when you pulled the intake off because water passes thru the lower intake but keep up the work it's ez to give up on something but it's a good feeling when you build something that work as it should and not knowing all to much how to build it
True! Appreciate you!
Your in good shape it’s nuts and bolts and UA-cam videos
Keep pushing bro, you’re gonna look back on this whole series when you done and have some good laughs.
Fasho!🙌🏾
Bad ass! Love this! This is what the car hobby is all about. Just us average guy's figuring it out in our garages. Hang in there man. I'm in the same boat. Working on a 69 Cutlass. Did my first ever engine pull last year. Made me proud to be able to do that.
As far as your engine goes, you might just need new head gaskets. Not sure what condition or what the history of the engine is, but I'm sure that engine is more than saveable...
That’s exactly what it’s about! Thanks for watching! I’m definitely still pushing forward and I’m gonna figure it out!
Keep at it. Never give up. Tear the engine down and see what it needs. Crank bearings, Rod bearings, and cylinders need to be checked. Odds are the block can be rebuilt like you want it.
🫡check back soon! Thanks for the support!!
No matter what the outcome was and how many days it took, it will ALWAYS be a W for you! Gettin that motor out is a hard task to do with limited space and tools, all you need is your family by your side and your mustang community to help you reach that finish line! Great vid bro keep it up! 🤝
Thank you SO so much!! Imma keep at it!
Yo dude I just ran across your channel and the situation I’m in is very similar. Almost zero experience working on cars but recently bought a foxbody and learning the ropes of working on cars. Recently found out I have a blown piston ring so I’ll be pulling my motor too. Keep you’re head high! Glad I’m not to only one getting whooped by a 35 year old ford!! Great content!!
You’re definitely not alone!lol Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Let’s get these things built together! We got this!
I hope you haven’t given up. I’ve just discovered you and I want to take the same route.
I know nothing much about pulling engines out or have the equipment, but I want to tackle this task .
Haven’t given up at all!lol I have this plus some more stuff coming for the channel in the next few weeks, so subscribe and stay tuned!
As far as your build, take your time, get the equipment you need, and just do it. I still have no idea about a lot of things, but it’s been fun learning and figuring all out. The community you can build is great as well. One step at a time. I’ll do the same!
Keep up the good work man! Just got hooked on the first few videos! I went through this same exact process 7-8 years ago. Had my fox in pieces, I’ve been ripping it around town like crazy the last few summers though. It’s worth it!
I believe it’s gonna worth it too! It’s gonna take some work tho lol but I’m down. I appreciate you watching and glad you like the series so far!
You’ll definitely get it! My first ls swap I was alone and did the same you did with research, you’ll get it and when you do and it’s running like you want, you’ll look back and be proud of your build!! Keep it up also new subscriber!!!
Thank you for subscribing!! Imma definitely keep going! It’s not over yet!
Inspiring 💪🏼
You got it bro head gasket swap and send it
😂😂😂😂I mean what could go wrong
Bro just came across your page… making me wanna keep my car now 🔥
Keep it and keep building! I need all the support of people who feel my pain😂😂😂
Props to you my guy!!!!! only way to learn is doing it yourself and not paying someone to do it for u.
Thank you!
Keep pushing fam. My best friend is the juck yard for my fox
No doubt! Appreciate you!
Sorry about your problems sir
Thanks! It’s no biggie tho! I’ll be able to work through and get past it. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Get an explorer 5.0! Could find them for around $1-2k all day. They have improved heads and a nice manifold. I think they run from 1995 to 2000 model year
Don’t give up brother! 🙏🏽
I won’t!✊🏾
While watching the water/oil drain, it doesn't look like the water was mixed with the oil making a milkshake. I also don't see any oil/water mix in your lifter valley or in your heads. You may have just gotten coolant mixed in when you took the intake off and the water drained into the block.
I would take the oil pan off and inspect the crank and rods for any oil-water mix. Probably take off the heads to check for a blown headgasket to be safe. u\Unless the cylinder compression was tested prior to taking it apart and it checked out fine.
Either way, keep it going, don't let it overwhelm you, take it in steps instead of looking at the project as a whole. It makes it easier when you can see the smaller steps getting done and not letting the entire project overshadow your progress.
Thank you! And I think you’re right about the coolant. The engine is coming apart soon so I can see what everything looks like! Appreciate the support!!
You got this!
Appreciate you!
Proud of you for going at it! This may be a hiccup but KEEP GOING! 👏🏾
Thank you!! You know I will!🫡
Keep your head up, funnily enough I'm in a pretty similar situation myself right now. Pulled the motor on my Jeep, already knew it was consuming coolant. The struggles with getting the damn thing out were just like you described, so I'm right there with you! After I got it all torn down I unfortunately found one cylinder head to be damaged rather than a blown head gasket, but none of this is a death sentence for an engine. The head was saveable on mine, apparently it was damaged when a previous owner had pulled the head and damaged it somewhere in the process. It was decked by a machine shop and cleaned right up. If only the head gaskets are bad on yours, check the bores of the cylinders for obvious damage, see about your options and send it! Might want to do a quick re-ring and honing while you're in there, whatever works best with your budget.
Yea, after pulling a head there was some fluid and a bit of rust in one cylinder. I think I can clean it and attempt a rebuild. I’m definitely nervous but excited to try it. It can go good or bad and I’m ok with either. I’ve found a series on UA-cam to walk me through the rebuild, so I think imma give it a go. It’s best thing for my budget too 😂 so win win? Thanks for feeling my pain and commenting, I really appreciate it!!
@@wheeldmedia Looking forward to see whatever way this goes, worst case call it a good learning experience lol. I'll say, as long as you get a hold of something like a factory service manual with all the torque specs and whatnot, there isnt a huge amount that can go wrong.. UA-cam really is a goldmine for anything like this, its what made me even dare attempt an engine pull on my own, meanwhile forums are just going to make you afraid of turning a bolt the wrong way, lmao
@@drorangelight3179 yea the forums aint always the best place to get the info I see lol
Remove the heads and replace the head gaskets. Im swapping a v8 into a 85 mustang. Good luck on the build.
Thank you!
If a junk yard motor is an option I would suggest that. That keeps the goal alive. Keep the motor you have now, break break it down and address the issues that plague it. You get the best of both worlds. A running motor, and a motor to build into a track able best
After some more research and talking to some people, it may not all be bad. I’m gonna tear it down and see so, hopefully it is. Thanks for watching!
Good job on pulling the engine yourself. The next time it will be easier, then the next time after that, you’ll be able to do it all blindfolded with a cigarette in your mouth. And it’s common for the old 5.0’s to blow head gaskets. I blew the hg’s in my supercharged 95 gt. Took the heads to the machine shop, they checked them, all good. When I re installed the heads I switched to studs and cometic gaskets and never lifted another head.
Yea, I’m probably gonna just swap out all the gaskets and seals and try to rebuild it myself 😂. Wish me well and thanks for your support!
it might not be bad. removing the lower intake while coolant is still in it will let the coolant leak into the oil galleys and eventually into the oil pan
Excellent video. Don't be disappointed, you have the support of your family (that was kool). Go slow and make sure you make notes where and how the stuff goes back on. I am also restoring my stang. Most of the interior is done just need to rebuilt my instrument cluster and a vacuum leak that I need to find. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yea, I definitely may turn to the body and interior while I figure the engine thing out. Thanks for the encouragement and keep it up on your build!
Good job bro. I've been in your exact shoes and worse...coolant in the oil is a good sign of a blown head gasket but that doesn't mean that the block is toast. Cast iron can take a lot more heat than aluminum....where you go from here depends on your budget... remove the clutch and flywheel...then put the engine on a stand...if you've never done that before, you're going to need 4 bolts like the ones that bolt the transmission bell housing to the block ...and get a few washers for each bolt just in case....once on the stand, tear the engine down to the short block...pay careful attention to your pistons and rotating assembly!!! "keep up with your bolts !!!" May seem like a lot but not really... keep grinding brother. It will be all worth it in the end.
I dont know if you noticed but when you took your engine out? you have gt40 3-bar heads. Save those heads!! if you end up getting a replacement block either way? those heads are WAAAYY better then the oem 302 heads just get them refurbished 1st and with some trick flow valve springs installed by the shop? all you need is a cam of your choice and intake. save yourself some money just fyi.
I actually had a long time supporter tell me the same thing essentially. But thanks for the confirmation! I’m definitely trying to save money wherever I can so, these may stay for now
That coolant was completely separated from the oil, so it would be my assumption that it didn't really run like that. Or, if oil and coolant will separate over time, I could be totally wrong.
But I would have expected the coolant to be emulsified into the oil.
No, you’re right. I think it came from the intake removal. I’ve have several people tell me and I think you all are right. So we may be good lol thanks for commenting!
I’d say the motor is out you mine as well freshen it up. It’s an 88 so you have forged pistons . Take to a machine shop and let them clean it up. Hopefully that’s all you need as far as block goes . If cylinders need a honing then that will add to price ,as well as buying new pistons , rings , etc. not sure what your hp goals are but the more hp the more your gonna spend. You can always stick with factory heads and just add a valve spring kit and a B303 cam . Or try and find a used set of heads. Aluminum or iron. Maybe a set of budget GT40p heads which are abundant on eBay. But definitely at very least go through the motor since it’s out.
I think I’m gonna try and rebuild it myself. It can only go one way other the other 😂thanks for watching and commenting!
Yeah man go for it . There are plenty of vids on UA-cam. Good luck
@@miked8027 thanks!
First you need to car friends….. that love that stuff…….bro……join a car club…hey hold your head up….. find an Engine builder…… and on that stay strong
Fasho! Preciate it!
welcome to the world of small block fords! I have a 93 notch I built for open track fun back in the late 90's, still playing with it. for good 302 ford content, check out junkyard digs channel & thunderhead 289, he tore down & build some small blocks a few years ago. as for your build, get a copy of How To Rebuild your small block Ford, by Tom Monroe. great book on small Fords, and details, pictures, things to look for.
for your car - pull the heads, document the teardown, pull the bottom end apart. decent chance you can get by with a hone and new rings, polish the crank with some 1500/2000/3000 grit paper & then crocus cloth(super fine stuff) - unless is had a bunch of damage the cranks are pretty durable. if the head decks are warped a bit, a few hundred to deck it at a shop will get new head gaskets to seal. I have done a bunch of low dollar rebuilds on these, just need to tear it down and see what you have. an Exlporer short or long block may be an option. check the damper for the rubber ring separation, a new one is worth it. check the heads out, see how bad the valve guides are and look at the seats & valves for pock marks/pitting.
keep at it!
Jeff
Thanks Jeff! I think I’m gonna try and rebuild it myself. I want the experience and honestly it’s the best option for my budget. Appreciate your feedback!
It might not be that bad, might just need pushrods and headgaskets
I cant even get my engine out i lost my motivation u have done more than i have. never risk rusty bolts they kill dreams use wd
You can do it! I’m just figuring it out as I go lol it’s tough, but I really wanna see the finished product and take pride in knowing I did it. Don’t give up!
Upgrade to gt40p heads and a cam.
Brother you are doing a good job hit me up if you need help
I appreciate you!🙏🏾
