Hits it right on the head when it comes to being modular. I started out with the 10G 120v system a few years ago, and over time have upgraded components with offerings from various company, mainly Blichmann's Riptide Pump, and the 240v Brewcommander controller, a 5K watt heating element and a jaded hydra cooler. Still use the kettle and basket, they made brewing idiot proof practically, you don't have to worry about grain crush, you can turn your grain to flour and it won't overflow or get a stuck mash. I've thought about upgrading to other kettles like the spike solo, but I'm very happy with the clawhammer system. I used to hate cleaning the mesh basket, but the secret is to dump the spent grain and hit it with a hose ASAP.
Great and fair comparison. Kyle, I have a lot of respect for how you started in this business (actually on the distilling side) and have grown it so successfully. I still have a converted cooler mash tun and ten gallon Spike kettle but if I was starting from scratch it would be Clawhammer all the way!
Been watching for a while didn't realize you were the owner! That's awesome :)
I will say, having used the Clawhammer 20g 240v for over a year now - it's a fantastic system. Not once have I wished I had one of these other systems. Huge fan.
You guys are right on point with the modular parts - well worth it. Can't wait to upgrade to 240V!
That’s why I bought my 120 last night. When I get ready to upgrade, I know it won’t be a problem
I’m a Blichmann BrewEasy 2-vessel 240V 20g(10g finished beer) system user. Now called the Classic. They use standard Blichmann kettles which include site glasses on them. There are no markings inside their kettles. The sight glass you referred to on the other side is a flow meter…handy for flow control, efficiency, and not sticking your mash. These all look like good systems. If I had it to do over and you had a 240v system at the time, I would have reconsidered. Blichmann has been good to me though. Thanks for the video.
I've been saving up to get one of yalls kettles. Looking forward to getting one guys. Keep up the good work. And always, Kyle you kill it with information on the videos. 👍
Awesome system, love my 240!! Great customer service also!!
I’ve been using the 240v 20 gallon system on my UA-cam channel. I’m a big fan of it. It’s now my flagship brewing system for all brewing vids. Cheers!
Yeah buddy!
Well presented and factual. (My perspective is brewing a year on the 10/18 gallon Spike Solo system.)
Great comments re modular systems, I learnt that after my GF and two Digiboils failed after two or so years. I now have a modular system (3V) that is sold in Australia. They are 36 litre kettles but I no longer use them as a HLT, Mash and boil kettle. I know use one as a 2 V (mash and boil in the same kettle using a basket) and a no sparge BIAB! The second one I use more often due to simplicity of operation and cleaning.
In fact if I was to start my all grain brewing journey again the single vessel 36 litre with a basket and pump would be my choice!
Cheers
The Clawhammer system seems to be the best bang for buck and that's a huge deal for me being a fellow Brewtuber. I'll get one one of these days!
Sight glass could be a quick look to see the liquid levels without opening up to see inside. I know on some systems they are harder to see with steam and random stuff covering the level numbers and or lines. But for my purpose (and maybe others) to have a sight glass involved in the system is mainly to see the liquid passing through for color and clarity. Again, you can always add one after the fact to a hose or if you sell the parts to have it easily installed to the kettle… which you do sell as a tri clamp version which is easy to install yourself. I would love to own a clawhammer supply system at some point but not feasible right now. I’ve heard good things about your products and some negatives. The difference between good companies and bad are not how much it costs but how you take care of the customer. I’ve known you guys to specifically email customers to fix issues, guide through errors, and or take feedback and want/make prototypes to make changes. That’s huge! I think thats what stands you guys apart from the rest. Not price. I say that because of not only knowing a few people that own clawhammer systems but I own a system that when I received it the heating element turned on and sounded weird as hell. I emailed them and they told me it was something to do with the install of some fan of the product. And I as a consumer had to fix it by messing with some screws on the inside. Why do I have to fix that if it’s happened to many? Anyways y’all’s customer service send adaptability to make changes is what stands you on top of the rest. Love the videos. Keep up with the brewing videos always enjoy them. Y’all are doing great things.
Good job, I appreciate what you’ve done
Thumbs up for having all the screw heads aligned on the outlet cover.
Excellent job. I've been trying to justify why something like the Clawhammer or others should be a consideration over something like the all-in-one's like the Anvil or like and you nailed it on the head - "Modular". Being an IT person be profession I can easily grasp the advantages for long term use and investments in your equipment. Great Job!
I picked up a Brewers Edge Mash and Boil 2.0 last year (got a steal of a deal at the time), but next time I make some upgrades, your system is what I’m eyeing.
Got ‘em 👌🏼 Nice comparison! Id throw Brewtools in the ring as well
I've only been brewing a year and half. I use a propane system with a partial mash. If I ever upgrade I'm getting a Claw hammer.
I have a brew easy by blichmann, I like it but it is kinda of clunky to brew on if I only want 5 gallons of brew or smaller batch.... I bought the clawhammer 240 system... i have brewed four beers on it FOR me it is such an easy system to learn and get right.... I love it!!!!! if i can give anyone advice if you are wanting to get in the BIAB electric systems just buy the ClawHammer!!!!
My 120w Clawhammer was just delivered today! Thanks guys
Heck yeah. What are you gonna brew first?
@@ClawhammerSupply I'm thinking a NEIPA. Got my Fermzilla as well so I can keep the O2 out completely with a pressure transfer into the keg after fermentation. Pretty much all my gear showed up at the same time so I'm stoked!
I completely agree with Kyle , I own the anvil 6.5 gallon all in one system and I love it !, But for the size 20 gallon I am wanting you can’t beat it. I can’t wait to order mine I been saving up. I have seen and watched and reviewed all videos on BIAB systems, Hands down claw hammer has to beat bang for the buck. And I also like how I get a fast email response from the staff about questions I have. You can spend the money for other systems but you will be happier with the claw hammer system. I plan on buying the 20gallon 240v here very soon . Like I said I have the anvil 6.5 but I would rather have the claw hammer 20 gallon biab
Still thinking about the clawhammer 20gal now that the anvil 18 is out? It’s more than 1000 price difference.
This is some great info!
Thanks!
Love my 240v 20gallon clawhammer!
Nice!
Thanks for the comparison.
This was very helpful for me.
Can you do the same for 10 gal
With the 220 volt & with pot still?
When I bought my 10.5 gal in march 2018 it was over $1300 an now you all made a new power box, I mean it was the 240V , also have you seen Brewtools BIAB? It’s about $2000 like spike but it’s touch screen.
happy holidays Clawhammer!
Mbc
Lol... I like that CH has a beer chugging hype team anywhere he goes on the internet. 🤙
Right back at ya, buddy.
The reason the non modular system weren't included is because they are quite a bit cheaper. The modular system looks like a good system though for upgrade and repairability
I built my system piece by piece, but I based it largely off of the claw hammer system. 10g SSbrewtech kettle, 5500w element, Utah biodiesel mesh screen, blichmann riptide pump, and a blichmann brew commander controller. I couldn't afford the claw hammer system at the time which is why I put together my own based off theirs. It's a solid system though.
Modular, baybeeeee!
Kyle, the Blichmann Brew Easy Classic 20 Gallon unit can brew up to 20 gallons of wort. You can also use a smaller recipe and do 10 gallon batches.
The Less expensive 10 Gallon Classic Brew Easy ( the one I own) can brew 10 gallon or 5 gallon batches.
So, you used the wrong model for comparison if you want to talk about 10 gallon systems.
Kevin B
Would very much like to purchase one of your brew systems. Give us a heads up if you guys start shipping to Australia.
Would be interesting how you would do decoction mash in these
I have a unibrau system, although I swapped out the pump for a riptide and use a butterfly value with it.
I think your point about the sight glass needs to have a clarification about its value. In many of these systems, you are meant to sparge rather than full volume.
In those cases, knowing the volume of above the heating element is actually something I have struggled with.
Another aspect is the heft of the system. The unibrau together is heavy.
You can get a triclamp-compatible water level attachment.
Saving up for that 120v
Good comparison, thanks for that. But one thing is to mention - none of this Systems is shipped to Europe or Australia, is it?
I have a Clawhammer Supply 10 gallon system. It is very well made but for me the grain basket is a problem. It is difficult for me to lift a full grain basket with one hand while I slide a clip underneath to support it. It is so much of an issue for me I am thinking about switching to a different system.
The pump is not attached to the vessel in the Brau system. It’s great that you don’t compare why the systems may cost differently, like perhaps triclamps or other pro brewer type touches.
We looked at the NPT models. Not triclamp models. Brau happens to not supply NPT. Also, Clawhammer, for example, uses triclamp where necessary (at the heating element connection) and NPT elsewhere. Reason being is that in our opinion, npt quick disconnect is a better option for for small scale brewing because it's a lot easier to use / faster than than triclamp.
I have checked all the BIAB system and Clawhammer supply fits my spot. But in India only Brewzilla (Arishtam- supplier)is available, so it would be great if Clawhammer would be available here in India.
Whoa! Hold the phone as of recording your 20gal 240v system was $1869 and now I'm looking at $1799 in March '23? nice.. Rarely see prices drop on anything lately.
hello guys, big fan, are u sending this equipament do Brazil ?
That was an interesting video. Thanks, Kyle. Honestly, I expected you, as the proprietor of Clawhammer, to be more biased toward your own systems than you were. You did much better than I expected to be fair.
Having owned the BrewEasy, Spike Solo, and other systems over the years, they have all had things about them I do not like (and things that I do) such as a sight glasses (what a PITA they are), proprietary components (e.g. Grainfather), etc.
I’ve been interested in the Clawhammer system for several years especially since I get viewers repeatedly asking me to do videos on it. I may want to revisit getting one for my channel. If you’re up for it, let me know how to contact you.
Hey, thanks for reaching out. I'll have emmet Hollar at you!
@@ClawhammerSupply yes do this! I have analysis paralysis…maybe Larry’s video will break me out of it.
I follow both channels and would love to see Larry review.
You answered my question without me asking. I was lucky enough to get one of the 10 Kickstarter 20 gallon 240V systems and still have yet to use it . Was gonna ask about buying a controller and using it for 110V but sounds like a no.
You could brew small batches in it with a 120v controller (5 finished gallons). But you couldn't do 10 finished gallons with a 120v
@@ClawhammerSupply would I still need a new heating element?
I assume you aren't using it because you don't have an outlet for the 240v controller? Yes, if you want to switch to 120v, compatible with standard household outlets, you'll need a 120v controller + a 1650w element with the "kit for stainless" add on: www.clawhammersupply.com/collections/all-products/products/distillation-equipment-electric-controller-kit
@@ClawhammerSupply correct, I have not put in a 240-volt outlet yet and didn't know if the 5500 watt element would work with 120 volt controller
One thing you need to tell about:
What Size is the Grain Basket, Diameter, Hight ?
What is the maximum amount of grain for the basket / System ?
What is the minimum amount of grain for the basket / System ?
What Size is the Kettle, Diameter, Hight ?
What thickness is the wall of the Kettle ?
How many L of liquid can the pumpe provide (L/min @ lifting hight)
How fast is the 120 and 240 V system heading 20L of weather from 20°C to 65°C and from 72°C to 100°C ?
There is probably a lot of other questions :) I haven't been abele to find answer anyway.
I love the grain basket you use.
I'll cover it in my complete comparison of these systems. Stay tuned.
With the bag system you can pick various size micron sizes to allow more or less flow through it. What micron size is your brew basket?
400
Should def check out the Brewzilla too
I no shit just bought the 10 gallon 120v system through affirm. Oh god its making me so excited.
Sweet!
@@ClawhammerSupply You guys are awesome. I just got notified the label has been created. I cant wait. Ill make a trip to the brew store this weekend.
I would have liked to know about the kettle construction. Thickness of the bottom, are any of the double walled or insulated? ect ect. I mean there has to be a difference in quality where that extra money is going. Great, clawhammer is the cheapest, now be honest with me an tell me why? Where did you cut corners in quality or accessories? It's not a bad, thing, I may be more than happy to sarifice a few things to save money just be open about it.
How much is shipping international?
Great video!
Does the 10 gallon 120v system get a good roiling boil if doing only a final target volume of 3 gallons (4 gallons starting volume)?
Yes.
Yes. The Homebrew Challenge does 2.5 gallon batches using the Clawhammer system in his videos.
Barley and the Hops also does small batches on this system.
Why not have the anvil 10.5 in the list?
Too bad I'm in Canada and have to pay an extra 30% because of the currency, I would buy the Clawhammer right away.
I am curious why the huge price difference between the Clawhammer 10 gallon 110v and 220v systems?
Clawhammer $600 difference
Unibrau $377 difference
Blichmann $105 difference
Spike $0 difference
Can we get it here in Europe? We have 240 volts here... I mean - WE NEED IT!
In Europe we miss Clawhammer 230vac products.
Mandatory beer chug!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HB4life!!!
Would love to purchase your system, guys ! But 120V is not powerful enough IMO, and your 240v in not easily usable as is in Europe. Too bad ! T_T
Hi its a nice system but when is it coming to Europe?
Hopefully someday soon!
The Blichmann system has an external level gauge on the left. The device on the right is a flow meter, which gives you an actual reading on how fast you’re recirculating.
They say that the "flow meter" doubles as a sight glass. What I want to know is what's the point of a flow meter when you can look inside the kettle and easily see how much it's flowing? Not knocking that system, but it seems to include several redundant features which don't really enough of a benefit to justify the increased cost of the system.
@@ClawhammerSupply have you ever used a flow meter? They’re quite helpful in keeping your brewday consistent.
Any distributers in Canada? Thanks
Nicolas
We ship to Canada.
Someone else asked and you didn't reply, so I'll ask again. Why is the 240v system $500 more than 120V?
As someone who knows a thing or two about electrical components, it doesn't make sense to me.
What exactly increases your production costs to justify a $500 premium?
I'm not picking, this is an honest question.
It costs us more to make, plain and simple.
Do you guys sell in Canada?
Yes we do! Please visit this page for more info - www.clawhammersupply.com/pages/moonshine-still-kit-shipping-and-order-tracking
Free shipping to Canada?
We charge for shipping to Canada.
Weird that you ship to New Zealand but not to Australia
We only ship specific items to selective locations. In other words, we only controllers and elements to North America due to power supply differences in other countries.
Spike solo does whirlpool very well with the second port on the bottom.
Spike will last a lifetime, I feel like I will pass it down to my great grand children.
It’s definitely not less expensive to a 3 vessel system
3rd
For me, Brausupply is the best value vs quality option, followed by you guys. both great, but Unibrau has a better basket design and triclover fittings and what appears to be a better build.
I think that it's worth to mention that in Unibräu all connections are TC connections instead of drilled holes with silicone gaskets. I love this channel, but don't see point of doing comparison as you clearly cannot be unbiased 😊
I don't think anyone's expecting them to be unbiased. They're a business. They do expect them to be honest and factual, which seems like it was. I've been noticing some shade getting thrown around in the BIAB world about rival systems so not surprising they are putting out a marketing video.
First, this isn't a review of the systems, it is a price comparison of "base models" offered by these companies only. Spike and blichmann also offer TC kettles but we looked at their NPT models because they offer such models and they're cheaper. Unibrau does not. That said, when we were designing our system we looked at triclamp connections and opted against them because connecting and disconnecting a half dozen TC fittings several times during a brew day felt like a giant pain in the ass. So we opted for quick disconnect instead. Hence, our system only uses one TC fitting, at the element connection, because we think it's structurally necessary there. The rest are quick disconnect.
@@51rwyatt - Yes, i've noticed that too. I understand if somebody has one of these particular systems and they like it. Or if there is something that they dislike about it and want to voice that concern. But I've also noticed some of the companies kind of ragging on each other. That's lame. There are definitely some negatives that I've heard about some of these other systems that I could have mentioned here but opted not to.
@@ClawhammerSupply I have zero insight, but IMO people tend to be irrationally loyal to whatever they spent a bunch of cash on, and in terms of vendors I suspect the pandemic created a lot of new home brewers (like sourdough) and some anxiety among vendors to capture sales even if that meant talking bad about rivals. It's way worse in other industries during even normal times so this is pretty mild.
Brewzilla?
Tell them the real reason you are not including anvil or the grandfather
Because they are leaps and bounds better then Your system
I enjoy your videos, but gonna have to disagree with you on the anvil. its the same "concept" for BIAB and half the price as clawhammer, makes great beer, source: i have an anvil
How can this not be biased?
Our opinion of the systems is,.of course, biased. The prices are what they are.
@@ClawhammerSupply okay, if you are clear about that, I can accept it.
Not a fan of BIAB you guys should make a trio system.
Whirlpool = waste of time
That is all.
