  • This is the companion piece to the Minuet in G minor from Anna Magdalena's Notebook. Both works have been attributed to Christian Petzold. I have never heard of him in any other context, but I would like to find more pieces by him like these two little gems.
This was played on the "back" 8' stop of our William Dowd 1967 Italian harpsichord. To hear the "front" 8', check out the Minuet in G minor.
    FAQ:
Can you tell more more about harpsichords, how much they cost and how they work?
Yes, please check out my video, "Harpsichord 101: How it Works".

I often wonder why the harpsichord isn't used anymore almost at all.
A piano may have a fuller and stronger sound (and possibly a much larger scale), but the harpsichord has such unique finesse to it... I think it's sad that it's not used anymore for music.

@@fadial-khameesi2953 tho that is true, as a harpsichordist an ex pianist harpsichord still has more playability and usaully has a plethra of options and music interpretation, infect most harpsichord performances are interpretation of the performer as most music of the time didn't have clear instructions when t change manuals and or add stops that part is solely to the interpretation of the harpsichordist

I think it because harpsichord are generally more baroque oriented. The piano doesn't have those boundaries and can play other genres. The piano in a way is more adapted while the harpsichord is more specialized

This is one of my favorites. I love the harpsichord; it has such a unique sound. What a few have described as "cheap," I find hauntingly beautiful. I wish it were used in today's music; there is a grace and an elegance to it. I also wish there were more information about Christian Petzold. He died in obscurity not realizing what he contributed to the world.

Kathy Cobb the harpsichord is a strummed instrument. Similar to a harp or guitar. A piano, which came later, has keys & strings like a harpsichord but a hammer strikes the string whereas a harpsichord strums the string.

Kathy Cobb, From 1703 Christian Petzold (or Chretien Pezold) worked as organist at St. Sophia (Sophienkirche) in Dresden, and in 1709 he became court chamber composer and organist. He led an active musical life, giving concert tours that took him as far as Paris (1714) and Venice (1716). In 1720 he wrote a piece for the consecration of the new Silbermann organ at St. Sophia, and he performed a similar task at Rötha, near Leipzig, where another Silbermann organ was built. Petzold was also active as a teacher, his most noted student, Carl Heinrich Graun (Harpsichord), Graun also studied singing with Grundig, organ with Emanuel Benisch, and composition with J.C. Schmidt, at that time Kapellmeister of the Dresden Opera. Similar to many famous in their day Baroque Composers of note, much of Petzold's music is lost. Among his surviving works, three trio sonatas (Violin, Cello and Harpsichord continuou), two partitas for solo viola d'amore, a Recueil de 25 concerts pour le clavecin (ou Organ) (1729) ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/7/73/IMSLP428832-PMLP696547-pezold_25_concertos_469811617_vol1.pdf which contains 25 harpsichord solo concertos (Harpsichord only) of the same variety as J S Bach's Italian Concerto published (Bach's differs as being written for a two manual Harpsichord), Orgeltabulatur (1704) chorale settings for organ, 11 fugues for harpsichord or organ, single pieces for harpsichord, three suites (G minor-which ends with a minuet, G major (which contains the G major and G minor minuet to my knowledge) and F major which also ends with minuet as the last movement) for harpsichord, and a Toccata for Harpsichord in Bb.

@SEVENTHSON89 Hello, that is correct. Petzold composed it. Bach, his wife and his children made a beautiful empty book for music. They filled it with many pieces by Bach but also pieces by other composers. But they were not labelled with the name of the composers. The book was just a place to store favorite smaller teaching pieces. Unless a piece was formally published (rare and expensive because metal plates had to be engreaved)- all other pieces were hand copied from teacher to student.

Near my town of Tilburg in the center of the southpart of the Netherlands, one can find a large fairytail park for children and all those how like to feel young.
The park is situated near the little place of Kaatsheuvel and is called "the Efteling" inspirated on de Dutch drawing artist "Anton Pieck".
Out of the many little mushroom along the many little roads inside the park, is sounding this melody played on clavichord.
Long ago it once was my eye opener to the wonderful world of baroque music.
Evry time I heare this tune, I an grateful to Mr Bach and its performer !

Hello. No, the piece is complete and does not have a missing part. Sometimes I have heard it played with its companion piece in G minor place in the middle. That seems to work very well (A B A form) but there is no indication that I've seen that it was intended to be this way. Key-scheme-wise it would make more sense to interject a piece in e minor (relative minor) instead of G minor (parallel minor).

@Enix5548 (part II) This means that one could set a temperament and then a few minutes later its not precise anymore. Basically all major 10ths sounded wretched to me in equal temp (on harpsi). Almost any well temp. works to eliminate that. The Well Temp. Clavier was not intended to be played all at one setting. The first book was put together from pieces he had written over a period of time.-- Notice that the suites maintain their main key for each mov't. That was FAR more typical writing.

@Enix5548 (part III) I have yet to hear a good temperament for the fugue in B major from WTC I. When I record it I'm going to retune the instrument as bass the well tempered tuning around B instead of C. (on the advice I have gotten after consulting with several organists and harpsichordists). It is easy to retune and harpsichordists did that all the time to make the temp needed as sweet as possible. -- these are some of my thoughts. Thanks for your interest.

    *Re: Harpsichord in modern times*
There was a revival and the harpsichord is often used when they are trying to recreate the original sound of the musical piece as the composer intended it. Talking about Bach and Mozart, because the piano wasn't invented yet in their times.
A few of my absolute favourites:
*Handel: Harpsichord Suite No. 7 in G minor HWV 432 - 6. Passacaglia*
*Harpsichord Concerto No. 5 in F Minor, BWV 1056: II. Largo*
Although if you just look up the name of the composer + harpischord you'll find many more.

i've read some complaints about the "piano" sound perceived as "bad" or "cheap". Others sorted the basics out :-), however I wanted to add that there are different flavours of harpsichord styles out there, like the french, the flemish, the italian, english and german, even spanish. And the 20th century harpsichords that sound distinctively different from their historic counterparts. Not 100% positive but I daresay the harpsichord we hear in this performance is a 20th century style harpsichord, not a harpsichord following a historical type of making. But, of course, I may be mistaken. Personally, I find harpsichords to be difficult to record, especially at home and when you're not a recording expert (I'm not). Anyway, a nice recording & performance that does not deserve 18 dislikes.

    • @Renshen1957
      @Renshen1957 8 років тому +1

Copy of Italian Harpsichord by the Dean of the Historical Movement, sounds nothing like it a modern "revival instrument." 20th century Harpsichords, Pleyel, Neupert, Sabathil, Wittmeyer, Challis sound very different. Best example, watch any Addams Family TV show episode from the 1960's or any of the E Power Biggs Pedal Harpsichord works (Challis), Wanda Landowska, Pleyel, or Karl Richter (German mass produced "Serien"). These instruments usually have shortened bass strings, 16' stops and the German instruments have the 4' stop on the upper manual. Sometimes called "plucking pianos," because of their massive, open bottom cases, thick sides, and many with metal frames. Side by side with a historical based instrument, they are quieter, do not project as well, (nickednamed "Whisperchords."
Modern (20th century) Pianos have muddy bass notes, indistinct attacks, and generally no tonal variation (except in the extreme ends of the compass) in comparison to a historical harpsichords clear, precise attack, and transparent bass.
There's nothing wrong with a piano, it takes more effort to play Bach on the piano, to have every line sing. Too many pianists play a Bach fugue by banging out the subject marcato and F or FF, (how can anyone follow the counterpoint) instead of playing with balance among the voices (to blend) on equal terms (and volumes) as a choir should sing. The damper pedal is used, and frankly too much, and the sonic blur. How much more is gained by forgetting one possesses a right leg, using the una corda pedal and listening than using the crutch of the piano (the damper pedal)?
You are quite correct about the national schools (and in these schools different cites predominate) and and see no reason for the thumbs down. An excellent performance of two pieces from Christian Petzold suite in G major.
You might like his other public domain work at imslp.org/wiki/Category:Pezold,_Christian

@Enix5548 Hello. I've looked into it. Bradley Lehman is behind that interpretation. I hear that it is wonderful. He even sent me instructions on how to do it. But I have yet to try it myself. -- I live in a climate controlled house with electricity, if the temp or humidity changes just a little bit, the harpsichords change their tuning. This throws off any exact temperament. Imagine uneven heat, high humidity and wood fireplaces in Bach's time. Unheated churches, etc.

I HATE THIS SONG WITH A BURNING PASSION!!!
When I was a kid I was studying the piano. One of the last songs I ever learned there was this one. And after 6 months of constant learning it I still couldn't get it right. I cried, the teacher was seriously angry and no matter what I did, I could never get my diminuendos and stoccatas right. I had blocked this memory out until recently when the same tune decided to start haunting me, resurfacing long forgotten nightmares.
But the harpsichord is the bomb, yo. Makes nice sounds.

@ruthavega Hello. Hmmm, I tried but I can't hear the kluk. Perhaps its the sound of the plectrum (little guitar pick) coming back down after I let go of the key or its a little action/key noise or when the jack hits the wooden felt covered jack rail.

Little bit of trivia. The Toys, a girl group, did a song based on this melody, and it was titled Lovers' Concerto. You can listen here: ua-cam.com/video/_muziTEnNWs/v-deo.html

Hello. The description says that this is the "companion piece" to the one in G minor. It puzzles me that that seems hard to understand.

Christian Petzold must be an angel, he gave Bach the Minuet in G Minor and then he returned to heaven!

No es un clavicordio, sino un clavicémbalo.
