  • Nitecore NU21 ultra light weight headlamp.
    Straight off the bat lets talk about capacity! its only 500mah. In order to compete in the ultra light weight category for trail runners weight is key, and this means they are walking the fine line between not enough capacity and more grams of weight. Luckily being a trail runner with access to many types of trail right up to Scottish highland mud murder trails I will say that I personally find this light is on the border line. I can use it for park trails, outback rolling grit and also mud trails and also the same in wet (The wet makes the mud dark and absorbs more light making it harder). However in my personal non expert opinion I think 360 lumens is not enough for a wet 'technical' trail. My definition of a technical trail is where you have regular wet exposed tree roots and rabbit holes. in that instance I would need more max lumens. so this light walks a fine line for me and when you go to a big box store and compare it it holds up well. its up there with the best of what you will pick up in the store off the display rack of ultra light weight offerings. So for that I will give it 8 out of 10. If you want more lumens and more capacity don't pick up a box with the words ultra light weight on it!

    By the way you most likely don't hear this enough, your beam shots and comparisons are top notch. I watch a lot of flashlight videos (I mean a lot, I have no life 😁) and you are the very best, some channels come close but no one provides as great content comparing the different lights.

      Thank you very much! I sometimes do wonder when its raining and im walking backwards and forwards, sometimes 9 times in a row for each batch of comparisons if its worth it. But then im reminded by people like you that its very helpful and valuable. I never forget that thanks to the comment's like yours they help steers me to make better videos, videos that keep the helpful bits and ditch the boring bits. I think if I didn't have comments section on my videos my content would be pretty poor as id miss out on insights and feedback. I don't think watching flashlight videos all day is sad, its cool, you are applying yourself to a specific technical area and becoming extremely knowledgeable in the process. When you become Professor TOP DOG it will all be worth it. :-)

    The similar looking Nitecore NU25 UL has 10 lumen on the red led and 400 on the main led, weight is 45 g and has a 650mah battery

      just been looking at that now. was there 2 version of that light some searches it says one thing then one another has V2 or something maybe they did a refresh on the NU25 Have you got the NU25 what do you think of it. if its any good i might try and get one.

      @@TrailTrek on the product page they mention an old 2017 version (360 lumen) and two new versions. One is the NU25 (56g) and the other is the NU25 UL (ultralight 45g), the only difference between the two is the headband. I have one as a backup light in my house. As I am not into hiking or running I can not judge if it would be enough light for this task

      ah ok thanks for this info you are right I just noticed mention of an older version I wish if they changed things they would stick a V2 on the name or something.

      Very welcome I enjoyed testing this and its so compact. I know il get a comment on the mega small cell but I guess they went for weight over all else when on the drawing bours with this one. its certainly better then the tons of small lights in went looking at in a big store in Edinburgh. SO many of them were really flickery or felt horrible and cheap.

    I don't really care about tint. I am sure it bothers most people far more than I. I just got a Nitecore SRT7i with a SFT70 LED, at lower levels its got a strong green tint at close range. But its a thrower, at higher levels its fine. Headlamps a different beast and I use headlamps almost everyday. Still even doing close up work indoors Tint is not as important to me as the beam profile and no PWM. Now this lightweight little puppy looks good and seems like a winner for a walking light or someone that still runs for fun or exercise.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  Рік тому +2

      For its intended purpose it works very well. Very smooth beam which is a pleasure to use and so light you forget its there. I still think the red mode needs to be double what it is now in lumens output but its a very well made and nice light with no annoying flicker and Type-C USB.

  • @JOZZIE52
    @JOZZIE52 Рік тому +5

    Looking at those beam shots, the NU21 IMO looks the best for a walking/hiking headlamp, but I just couldn't stand that tint it has, the light looks horrible. Apart from the tint it does look like a good light, and supporting type c PD should not be a feature, but unfortunatly it still is.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  Рік тому +2

      Yeah when I was testing it on white paper on my floor it was a little green but they just know most buyers couldn't care for hiking and camping. I think if they had gone for a high CRI the lumens would have been even less and the light would be too dim. The beam profile was very smooth I just wish they had made this a 1000mah cell and slightly bigger so we could have double lumens on red light mode for example and more top end. I now have 3 headlamps in the car I have my trusty SP40 in glove box, I have the nu33 in a cup holder in back and then in the trunk I have this hanging so I can grab it if needs be. I might get rid of the sp40 due to it not being type-C very soon though.

    • @JOZZIE52
      @JOZZIE52 Рік тому +2

      @@TrailTrek Yeah, I used to not care if it had Type C, now I have a few that are its becoming a must have, charging is easlier than swapping, but I still like having the option to swap
      I also don't do hikes or long walks, so I'd prefer the extra weight for the higher output, higher CRI and higher runtime

    Every gram matters on those long hikes. Nitecore really made this right. I don't mind having it plugged into a charger more often. Nitecore make the lightest most efficient battery bank anyway the carbo light 10k n 20k are crazy light for their capacity. I have the sofirn beamer headlamp fir those day trips or dog walks. But, Id be reaching for the the nu21 on those difficult 3+ day trips.

    Thank you for this review. I would like your opinion. I am needing a light when I walk my dogs at night. I live in an area with bad street lighting and need to contend with uneven pavement covered in ice and snow in winter. Basically I just need some good light to navigate that. Do you think that Nitecore NU21 would work well enough in that context? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  9 місяців тому +1

      You are very welcome. the NU21 would be absolutely fine but you could also look at the Nu33 which is slightly bigger and heavier with better output, or go for the in-between and get the UT27 im currently looking at which has a dual system of warm light for bad weather ands fog/rain and a cool light for other tasks. I would want to know if your dog runs off into the distance allot though as then you might need something that can push out a nice distance to see where they are etc and check things in that case you might need something more powerful but then its more weight. does more weight bother you? and do you need some distance?

      thanks for your response -- I did end up purchasing it and have only used it once but seemed to work reasonably well -- I like the weight and dogs are on leash so shouldn't be running off - have a good day @@TrailTrek

      @fragchitown8985 I would go for a more powerful flood beamer honestly this headlamp is designed exclusively for low weight. If you're only going on short walks there's no reason to not have extra power...

    Is it possible to remove the strings somehow or separate the flashlight from the base? thank you

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  10 місяців тому +1

      I couldn't. The bits where the light pivots and it attached look like screws but they are'nt its molded plastic and they make it look like a slotted type screw head. So sorry i couldn't work out how to take it to parts.

    'Cocaine white' gave me a chuckle lol. As one of those American backpackers doing week+ trips in the Sierra Nevada mountains, ultralight is pretty much the top priority, MUCH more important than lumens. I almost never really use above ~50 lumens anyways. I REALLY wish it had a removable battery, though. 60 lumens for 8 hours (from the spec sheet) is a marginal runtime for a long trip, and if I have to carry a whole power bank instead of just a backup cell, that defeats the point of being ultralight.

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  11 місяців тому +1

      I couldn't resist, I get annoyed when they do the color game with new mobile phones. "This one is available in emerald shimmer green, midnight crystal black and mind-bending facia". They mean green black and pink :-) I think some people were missing the point of 'ultra light' I had a few comments saying this light is useless with tiny battery and not enough lumens. But not everyone gets out of a car and walks in the woods for half and hour then back in the car. When I wild camp I have to think about everything I carry as if its not on my back its not getting to the camp site. For multi day ultra lighters its so important like you say. I have had a message from Nitecore saying they are doing more ultra lights in the future and I also had a chance to test a prototype they made but im under NDA on that but these companies are thinking about ultra light and trying new things.

    за его цену, совершенно не понятно почему нет управления через wifi и настройки режимов через приложение

    • @TrailTrek
      @TrailTrek  4 місяці тому +1

      I would guess that adding WIFI etc. will just make it bigger and heavier which thewy don't want. I would like to see the larger heavier lights do something like this or add a screen though.
