• Patio Balcony Pond for...
Since I live in a condo / apartment, I don't have the room that I use to. I may not be able to have a pond in the backyard, but nothing stops me from getting a planter pot and putting it in the patio / balcony / terrace. Try to find one that is around 15 gallons at least. Easier to keep the water conditions stable. Along with pots, you can use rubbermaid containers, or storage bins, as long as they don't have holes.
My pond has a few rosy red minnows with a pgymy water lily, water lettuce, anacharis, parrots feathers, and hornwort.
The key to success is find hardy plants that are able to survive your climate. So if you have extremely cold winters or hot summers. Find something that is native to your zone and can thrive. Make sure you check your water for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate regularly. Don't feed your fish too much food, any uneaten food will just dirty the water and cause ammonia/nitrite/nitrate to spike.

This is exactly what I envisioned yesterday when I was at Home Depot and I found my barrel planter!! Awesome video!!
Nice, looks like mine. Nice job. Its like we yearn to live near water flows. thanks for sharing.
Very pretty!
So beautiful! and helpful too, thanks!
Gorgeous container pond and thank you for sharing. It looks absolutely stunning :)
Nice setup.
nice work
Love it!
VERY NICE!!!!!
I know you said it but......Wow, those lily's couldn't look any faker. Nice video, good content. Keep it up
I have since taken them out. I had real lily's in there for a while too.
Nice!
Nice job! I also have a similar set up 😃👍, medakas or Japanese rice fish would look great in there
+Keith Segura awesome, if you got a video. Love to see it. Check out my newer setup. ua-cam.com/video/RUyYefYjaz0/v-deo.html
thank you
I was looking to do something like this
Wow 👏 😮
Nice job. Looks great! I have a similar barrel tub that I got from Home Depot but haven’t set it up yet...not sure if it’s going to thrive indoors since I live in the north east zone where it gets too frigid in winter. But I am motivated to set one after watching your video. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it. If it gets too cold, you can bring them indoors until to warms up again.
Great looking pond! which over the back filter do you have running behind the bamboo fountain feature? Thanks in advance for your answer!
I have a large sponge filter lowered by an air pump.
Hi what is the name of that tall grass-like plant on the left side of the pond?
I love your bamboo pump, found them on eBay! What filter did you use? I want a setup very much like yours. Thanks so much for sharing your video, this helped me a lot more than tons of other "DIY" videos on UA-cam as its exactly what Im looking for.
+Jason Jarred
I use a cheap grreat choice filter from petsmart.
The minnows are still alive outside even when the pond froze over with an inch of ice.
Thanks for watchin
k
What happens to the minnows in the winter?
Where can I get similar pot?
dope
Great video,
What size of filter are you using? also does it freeze in your location?
Thanks
+ron matusik I got a filter that was for a 10-20 gallon. Yes it freezes. Watch my updated video it'll show the ice that formed on the top.
💕
How crucial is a filter or pump for oxygenation in regards for a pot with just plants
Beginner pond pot enthusiast here
Depends o what plants. But you dont want the water to be stagnant. I'd put in a simple water feature at least.
how are the lilies doing ,since they are not in the direct sunlight or arent they ? can they bloom ?
+lolo poli they're starting to sprout leaves again after winter. I'll know if they bloom this summer. I have a video update.

How often do you have to do water changes? This is a cool idea. I would like to do it, but in a bigger scale. Like 700 gallons rectangular size! This is NEAT.
Hi, I change the water about once a week. 1/3 water change.
Can you show the parts used. I see stones on the bottom as well as a clay pot saucer. So a large pot, a filter and a pump?
Is that all you used? Nice work though. This is exactly what I want. And it is a bonus of having fish! I am going to try to copy this.
+sasha smith hi you pretty much have it right. I have large pebbles on the bottom as well as some aquarium gravel. Whatever I had left over from my indoor tanks.
a clay saucer so I can put food at the bottom for the fish to eat. And when they're done eating I suck it up with a turkey baster.
I have a filter to help keep the water circulating. Pump is more for decoration but it does help with circulation.
Get lots of live plants and as big of a pot as you can fit. And don't overstock the pot with too many fish.
Watch my more updated videos on the pond. Good luck.
The reason I clicked on this video, is because I'm wondering how you get the filter out on your balcony. My balcony doesn't have a power supply - do you have to keep your window open nonstop?
+Andrzej Sienko hi. I have a power outlet near by. Possibly you can get a solar powered air pump to drive a a sponge filter.
Also they sell power taps that turn a light socket into a power outlet. Just some ideas.
Did you have issues with mosquitos? Thanks for the video
I don't cause I live in the city.
Where you get the bamboo fountain from,? What filtration do you use?
Amazon. I use a sponge filter
👍🏽
What's your definition of "really cold" in the winter? I live in Chicago, will the plants and fish survive Chicago winters?
How cold can Chicago get in temperature?
kenVersus at worst, way below freezing.
I'd probably move the fish in doors if it's that cold. Depends on the size of the pond but a small one will freeze solid.
Did he say "the flowers are fake by the way" ?
What fishes are u putting into the pond?
They are small rosey red minnows and comet goldfish.
And what's the water capacity of the container u r using?
+arindam barthakur 27 gallons
Hello i am wanting to do this project and have the same container but I’m scared the material might harm the fish? Have you had any problems?
As long as the material doesn't have paint that can come off, it's fine. Also make sure it's not too small. 5gallon would be ideal. the one I have in the video works great.
kenVersus thanks for your reply :)
Thank you that looks great and simple. Is it dangerous if my dog drinks that water with chemicals? I know he's gonna try when m not looking. Sneaky baster German Shepard.
+Jalal Dawod if by chemicals you mean the beneficial bacteria and water conditioner. I'd say it's probably safe. If it's good for the fish should be fine for other pets.
kenVersus thank very much. One less thing to worry about.
You should put ghost shrimp
What state are you in?
Frank Balon cali
Remove the plastic flowers please!
Marco Ruiz ya the plastic flowers are dumb
🤣🤣
So, other than opinion is there an issue with having fake plants? It’s not like he doesn’t have live plants to aid with cleaning the water..
There is absolutely no reason for him to get rid of the flowers. Do I think they look great? No. Does that matter? No. HE thinks they look good, and it's HIS pond. As long as it makes HIM happy, that's what matters.
"Look at my great water garden, the flowers are fake"
The Artificial Plants Are SO Ugly!!!
Better Nothing" =/
you have the space there - you could have an aquarium on a stand instead ....and plenty of coldwater fish would be fine outside - you could just add a heater .....I don't like this tub - its too fake and too fussy - the lamp clamped on the side NO it just looks too fussy - looks like a kid set it up .
at least the dude could probably type
Wow talk about being blunt. Very rude. I think it looks nice
Ass hat!!
