beagle would be proud, u know where the back door is
hahahaha didn't expect this kind of comment
oh your camera is broken, or beagle why is your backdoor open? Il’l show you why. ~ beagle
“and on the inside there’s a secret button, a secret menu button”
What can i do to fix unit not recognize audio? The mic level doesn't show up, ribbon cable seems alright after checking up through second unit that works.. mainboard/ motherboard issue??
Hey there, I have a Japanese vx1000 and I'm wanting to make sure it's filming in 4:3 rather than 16:9. Do you know where abouts in the menu or camera is the feature to change it? Thanks :)
I think the menu tells you whether it’s filming in 4:3 or 16:9
Hey so my heads were replaced about a year and a half ago and my camera is now not recording for some reason this has been happening for the last month and I even took it in to get cleaned, at first it was fine but after about 30 minutes of filming with it the time code goes away and it won't record anything and won't let me put a tape cleaner in it when I do it tells me to eject it but it let's me put a tape in it so please help find out what's wrong thanks
Can you plug the camera into a VHS player and capture a VHS tape onto a mini DV via those RCA inputs?
It's strange that the PAL version doesn't have the DV input. And are those "double thickness" batteries compatible with InfoLithium L, such as the Hi8 and older Digital8 camcorders?
When you import video into your computer from the MiniDV tape, does it take a long time to import long video recordings? Let's say you recorded an hour of video and you want to import all the video you recorded before you edit it and get it ready for production will it take an hour to import the video, or does it import it quicker than that?
Can you change the shutter speed and the aperture during recording?
If i have transfered my videoparts from the vx1000 tapes to my computer can i re-set the tapes and use them again, or do i concedently have to buy new tapes?? Please reply!
if the playback ribbon breaks will that affect the recording functions? or just the controls?
I have a problem with my vx1000, when i turn on the camera the screen in the viewfinder works perfect but when i move upwards the viewfinder the screen turn off. Help me (sorry for my english)
Thanks so much for respondig my questions. Im really new to mini dv and stuff
Just got mine but does the vx work on camera Mode without tapes? Cause mine doesnt. Its only a black screen. But on Player mode it works.
Years on and this still is the favourite with skaters and really has become rather a legend in the camera world. Myself even as a camera collector don’t own one sadly as to get a working one these days plus the amount of love going to these units means a big price to pay most the time. I own the vx2100 though and the professional PD170 and both cameras hold a lot of love in my collection. Maybe I’ll grab one of these units one day! The door design with very important buttons on seems such a bad design floor! Bit late to give Sony my feedback though 😂
The VX1000s are totally overpriced now. I see ones in good condition going for around 400€ and that is just ridiculous. I own a PD170 myself, I got it for 120€ including a custom flightcase and the original Sony wide angle converter lens (the one with the fancy lens hood), and it is light-years better than the VX1000.
DrCassette excuse me sir, pd170 better than the VX1000? Not in a million years, my friend. The Pd might be a camcorder but the VX is a tool for making art, it has the golden colours, the classic look, the vivid browns, the crispness of gods. The VX is a LEGENDARY grail still alive and sought after since 1995.
25 years and still strong. People are still looking for units. I would trade 3 pd-170s for just one VX. Not to talk about the fisheye lens made and designed for the VX1k: The Century Optics MK1.
This is humankind history here, generations after generations of filmmakers agree on this.
VX1000 for life.
hey DrCassette, those lights do not light up on mine and when i put it in vtr mode it just shows a black screen please help!!
My vx got stuck in inhibit mode, so now when I capture my footage is pixelated and blurry, I have no Idea how it got on that mode, if you could tell me how to get it off that would be very helpful. Thanks
do u have to haecassetes in the camera to see a picture through the viewfinder
What options for external microphones does it have? Also are modern day software still able to import the video from the camera?
7:44 what kind off a UV filter do you use ?
@DrCassette hey mate, if i have this camera,how i can transfer the videos to cvomputer? with a firewire?
Hi DrCassette, My vx1000 has a loose VAP or lens assembly and it seems to wiggle back and fourth. When i have my fisheye on it causes the vignetting to disappear in the bottom right corner. how difficult is this fix?
I did receive your Email. I'll respond when there is time to do so.
I live in Australia and if I was to buy this camera were could i get a charger for this camera and how would I upload the clips from the camera to my mac.
how do you edit with it because it records to tapes and I just wanted to know if there was usb port to put it on your computer because I would use it to film skateboarding
If I was to upload the cassette to my computer, would it come in one big chunk of audio?
Thank you for all the questions you've answered of mine. I have one last question. There is a bubble on the inside of my lens when I point it straight up it floats into view . Is this a problem? Is it water or air ?
hey mate, if i have this camera,how i can transfer the videos to cvomputer? with a firewire?
@strikeah
I actually mentioned the lens thread diameter only on purpose to prevent getting those questions :D
I just bought a sony trv900 and was wondering how do you light up the playback buttons on it, like how you did at 8:40
why do my settings on the back display say --.-- --.-- after im done settings my colors, whitebalance, etc.?
which one should i get for skating the trv-900 or the vx1000 right now i have a sony dcr hc28
Very good review. Thank you for posting. I found it very informative.
what time counter do you mean?? the one that is in blue and nex to it there are the battery levels??
What is zero set memory and could you explain a llitle bit about time code? please answer
how do you get cassete tape footage on to a pc to edit?
hello, my vx 1000 has a problem and I regard the heads!
It does all the work correctly, but does not leave the movies in the mini dv!
I filmed 30 minutes, but when I poured the tape was completely black! could you give me some advice? thank you
You could try running a head cleaning tape.
i have no cassetes in the camera but when i turn it on and look through the view finder i can only see black but there is the battery symbol and writing when i look through
@Personhaz
I think there are Firewire to USB converters.
Is it possible that a USB>Firewire port will work? My computer doesn't have a firewire port x_x
do you happen to know where i could get the eye cup for a vx1000? i seem to have lost mine, ive searched ebay with no luck
how do i put footage from the camera on to my pc
Can I ask a question, please? I wonder, which camcorder gives out better picture quality, this one, or the Panasonic GS500. T have an ability to buy one of these for an equal price... so, can I have a piece of advice, please.
how do i get everything that i have record to my computer?
I have recently acquired this camera but the eject function, the DV port and the beep(although turned on) are not working. Also there is no sound coming from the microphone. Since it is an old Sony camera do you believe there can be leaky capacitors inside?
These camcorders are generally new enough to not have problems with bad capacitors. But they are of course professional models, and many of them have had a long, hard life. So unfortunately there can be all sorts of different problems...
@@DrCassette turned out that the microphone issue was a broken mode selection switch. The only remaining problem is the dv port, all other outputs are working, i have tried different dv cables and computers but still the camcorder is not being recognized.
what is the name of that video light and does it fit on top of the camera
@DrCassette do you know if thats hard to put into your computer?
Hi DrCassette,
Thanks for the video. I have the VX1000 and a lot of precious footage on there. But I have no clue how to get them onto my computer after hours of research. (I purchased firewire cable and connected it to my Sony Windows 7 but there was no response). Any suggestions?
Do you know where I can pick up another remote for a VX1000? I can't seem to find any...
Do you think this camera would do well while filming skateboarding?
can you please tell me the model of that video light that you used as a discharge for the batteries? can't find it anywhere
The name has been mentioned in the comments below, I think.
anyone answer , does anyone know how to set your vx1's audio settings back to auto???
i'm definately buying this thanks to your review, thank you very much!!
do you know if a sony trv 900 remote will work for a vx 1000?
what do you mean by the nd filter mixed with zoom acting like a dslr? are you talking about the contrast between the how blurry the bg is opposed to the focused subject??
Correct.
The correct term would be 'depth of field'.
can anyone explain 4 green bars across the cameras footage ? is it dirty heads?
You can re-use tapes a limited amount of times, at some point the tapes will start having occasional drop-outs, and that is something you don't want to happen. I generally use my tapes only once.
Hey, I live in Germany and I'm looking for a Vx1000, I can't find a fisheye for it, do you know any websites that still offer 52mm fisheyes for it? Thanks.
Das beste fisheye dafür ist entweder das Mk1 oder das Opteka 0.3,guck mal auf amazon :)
what do you use a capture cam for though? importing playback on the go?
What do you mean by that? There is no CD for the camcorder...
does it have a screen where you can see what your filming?
Hey help me out! What's a general capture cam???????? Something cheap
Proper insight I love my 1000 and recently got a 2100. Good job!
which of your videos are filmed with the vx1000? im most likely gonna buy one, but i would like to see how it looks when it is filming something other than skateboarding.
whats a good cheap capture cam for this camera
could someone please send a link to a webside where you can buy it
What is the model of that light that accepts the L series batteries? I would like to purchace one, but the last one I got used M series and I'd like to keep them all the same if possible
The light shown in this video is the LED-CN160, available on Ebay from China. I have a dedicated video about this light on my channel. It is very versatile and will take AA batteries, and the Sony L, M, P, H and V series batteries.
Awesome! Thanks very much
Skateboarding made this camera relevant. It will always be the most LEGENDARY video camera of all-time in the history of skateboarding.
Thanks for all the background info!
@giammyzanna
Yes, I think you can, although you'll probably notice the change when watching the video because the steps are rather rough.
Great video - really helped a lot, but my mac book doesn't have a firewire import, so I'm lost as to how to upload footage. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?
also im about to buy the sony vx1000 but would you know where to buy a century mk1
You can get these cassettes half price off since they are sitting in the dust. I walked into PC Richards and got a sweet deal. So much memory these have! Noways a hour video on a I-Phone is ridiculously huge in file size like 60 gigs or something. Plus I like using an actual camera as well and this basically edits as you go when you stop the tape.
Hey I'm buying a vx1000 from my friend and he's throwing in some sony tapes. I know in another video you said not to mix certain tape brands, and I was wondering if Sony and Panasonic tapes could be mixed in the same camera? I want to use my last Panasonic tape in the vx. Also, how necessary is it to get a head cleaning tape? I'm going to be doing quite a bit of fast forwarding and rewinding because I'm filming skateboarding and I like to rewatch footage.
Definitely avoid mixing Sony and Panasonic brand tapes. I ruined another camcorder that way, it would start having constant drop outs in the recording.
A cleaning tape is not necessary for as long as the camcorder records without errors.
Better avoid winding the tape around too much. You can do it while capturing, but better not 'just for fun'.
invest in a capture cam chris and you can play footage back on that
Thanks EastCoastLurk I have a panasonic gs300 which I'm going to use as a capture cam
Michael White what’s a good capture can to get?
My vx1s tape deck wont work. It’s stuck opened what do I do? Is there anything I can do without servicing it?
This is a fault in the mechanism that will require some service.
Does this camera break alot? is it usually expensive if it does?
That depends on the settings in your capturing software.
@BChoww
Thanks to the very good microphone of the VX1000, the noise is bearly audible, it's very quiet.
Thanks for the great video. I am currently looking to purchase a vx 1000. I found one for only 250 dollars but the cable that controls the playback modes is broken. Do you think it would be worth it. I dont think have the skill set required to fix it.
thanks
Hi,
wie kriege ich denn die Videos von dem Tape auf meinen PC.
Kannst du mir dass bitte nochmal schnell erklären.
Wäre echt nice!
Danke
Greez Mo
Do you happen to know what their called? I'm looking online and am not sure which one is good.
My god, I've never seen a video about a vintage camcorder that's received so many comments from people who don't know the first thing about using a camcorder!
+themaritimeman It's mostly the skateboard people who still use this camcorder. They are young people, the VX1000 is probably their very first encounter with tape technology. So there will be plenty of rather stupid questions...
Much more annoying are those who think they are MiniDV experts after reading one or two questionable quality internet articles about it. You won't believe how much hate I have been getting in the past for playing back cassettes in the VX1000. Those skateboarders seem to believe the camcorder breaks immediately after activating playback mode :P
Yeah, I noticed the skateboard thing, and I tried to look up why a particular old camcorder could possibly be so popular for such an odd purpose, but it just frustrated me so I gave up. :P
*****
I don't really know what's up with the popularity of the VX1000 amongst skateboarders either.... At this point, is a terribly outdated camcorder, with very low resolution CCD image sensors and bad low light sensitivity.
+dctechnica it's the 4:3 format and the amazing fisheye lens you can use with it (century optics mk1) and just the overall look that makes it popular for skateboarding.
They have amazing fisheyes for it, the colour is amazing and the manual controls are awesome :) and one of the biggest points for skaters about the vx1000 is that they're incredibly easy to repair and fit together like lego blocks.
I use a Panasonic VHS-C camcorder on a daily basis. and would absolutely love a VX.
can you reuse the tapes and if so how many times
12:30
Hey Dr.Cassette,
When you said about the cable in the cassette compartment breaks what do you mean by that? What if I want to place a new Sony DVC Tape, just wondering also I wouldn't play back or capture from this camera because of tape glitches. What do you think would be the best suggestion? I highly recommend myself on getting a Sony VX1000 - NTSC instead of PAL the frame rates 25fps instead of 30fps. I rather stick to the 30fps instead, just wondering about the tape deck. What if I want to place a new Sony DVC Tape or Sony Cleaning Headtapes? So I won't mess up the heads on the camera. However I could buy myself a Sony TRV900 as a capture cam to use to import it to my macbook pro.
Whatever translator you are using, it doesn't work. Your text doesn't make sense.
DrCassette What do you mean? Not trying to rude I was taking about the tape deck on the camera. At 12:30 when you said about the cable inside the tape deck can break easily when you eject the tape out of the camera a few times. Sorry I sounded a little vague.
Well I understand it's all about the 12:30 mark, but you aren't asking any question???
DrCassette Ok what if I want to place a new Sony DVC Tape or however tape over the footage that I film for an example will it mess up the heads on the camera? Just wondering getting this camera soon, you said about the cassette compartment cable breaks.
You can open the cassette compartment but the ribbon cable will wear out eventually causing the playback controls not to work.
Great demonstration, i am just missing an peace of recording with the camera you are demonstrating. With witch camera are you recording this movie? And what microphone do you use here?
Very professional video. Thank you for this review
i have a japaneese vx1000. i know i cant switch it to american but how do i figure out how to change all of the settings i need to change?
You should be able to download the instruction manual from Sony.
You don't need the remote control. In playback mode the transport controls shown in the video will light up. Simply use those.
Hi for first cool video you explained the camcorder very good but i have a question : Is a cassette nessecary to save my just filmed videos or can they also saved on the camera ? (srry for my english )
is there any way to fix that?
9:30 - Colour bars are useful for creating timecode and sync so that in between the clips you create the picture won't jump as much and the video editor will have an easier time working with the tape content.
@StreetyMcStreetSk8er
Worst case would be a short in the cable. That would cause the camcorder to randomly engage various playback funtions. That happened on another Sony camcorder from the same year that I used to have. However, the record mode won't be affected by the cable.
@ScrubaDubSkateFilms
Basically the NTSC and the PAL version are the same except the PAL version also features a wide screen mode.
The video output through the composite and S-Video outputs is different, so you may not be able to hook the camcorder up to a TV or VCR. The firewire signal is the same, so you can transfer the PAL videos into your computer without problems.
Where did you get your vx1 from?
@SkatersOfOxford
This camcorder is pretty tough, there are many examples here on UA-cam where a VX1000 got hit by something, and while other camcorders would have stopped working completely, the VX1000 just kept on going. However, if it breaks, repairs are going to be rather expensive as this is an old camcorder and replacement parts are getting rare.
would you say it is outdated now? is it still worth purchasing one?
@1ForMySeether
It has the viewfinder for that purpose. The is no flip-out LCD screen on this model.
It has a 3,5mm mic input jack. Modern software will work with it for as long as it has an option to import video through firewire.
the thing about the batteries not holding charge was very insightful
i absoultely love the video man, thanks a ton for the info, Your voice though, suuuch a great narrating voice.
@DrCassette
Oh, I thought that the VX1000 was a professional low priced camcorder. I saw an interview with David Lynch about the PD-150. He shot a movie with it and upscaled the footage to Hi-def and he said that he really liked it. So definitely worth a try :) Unfortunately youtube will ruin it if you upload a test footage...
Does yours shoot in 50FPS interlaced?
thanks for the info,...what camera does jamie thomas film with these days? Ive always been a huge fan of his filming skills. It looks like it may be HD camera from the looks of his filming in the latest zero stuff
