Erick's FS-5 setup is rad and big ups Jenkem for shedding more light on the tapeless VX world. But there's actually loads of other great tapeless options that people have been using for a while now, and this is just one of many. The Datavideo DN60, Sony MRC1, Sony DR60, Firestore FS-100, FS-4, FS5, and FS H-200 Pro, and Citidisk CFR/HD are all VX1000 compatible and mountable DV recorders, and all have been getting a ton of use in the VX world for at least a year and a half at this point. Ben Jones did a complete run down video of a few of them for those interested: ua-cam.com/video/Ey5UAqgjnFU/v-deo.html
@@MrIanEntertainment No problem dude. The Sonys seem to be the most common and most widely used. The FS-100 and FS-4 are a bit crappy for VX1000. so I personally wouldn't recommend them. The DN60 is possibly considered the best but it's pretty rare. Good luck!
THIS is how you do it. And not plugging in some composite recorder that only creates MPEG4 files. The DV-out -> DV-in recorder method actually gives you EXACTLY what you'd get from the camera. Just the pure DV stream that you'd otherwise record on a DV tape. Just on a flash storage medium. And THAT is what you should definitely always go for. This is the only way to get authentic DV material from a DV camcorder while bypassing the Tape recording.
Agreed. I have the Immersion powerplay and it does not look good. Makes my TRV900 look like a damn HI8. The Clearclick 2.0 using the S-video is a bit closer but still not as good as this solution.
But firewire cables tend to burn out when they're used while the camera is on. Also these recorders go for 300 bucks. So a proper VX build sets you back 800$. As a filmer who likes to film not just fisheye I'd rather get an xl1 and film through SDI for that price. anyways, I wish I wasnt broke
Please comment tips about that thing here. I tried the immersionRC and had terrible luck. Couldn’t even send it back. I almost did a segment on why you shouldn’t get the immersion RC.
I have a feeling that this might make VX's virtually impossible to find soon. So many people haven't bought one simply because the price of tapes and the annoyance of digitizing it. I know I'm definitely copping one now
Who was dumb enough to say that? Don't get me wrong, the VX definitely needs a rest, but the vast majority of us are too puppet-minded/insecure and lack the artistic vision required to step away from it/branch out. LMFAO at every person who still thinks the VX is the best camera to record skating with. Kids and nostalgia-obsessed man-children with no vision have trouble seeing through the (tired) nostalgic appeal of VX "footy". . .I remember when skaters used to be at the forefront of things rather than just sucking on/investing themselves into long-outdated trends.
works, and good idea.. but some loss of quality from the immediate digitalization. I can see it in this video from the clips, but I would like to see it stood next to some imported footage off a tape
It's a bit frustrating that the person who is explaining the method does not know how to properly set up a vx1000. It could just be poor settings, on camera as well as while exporting the footage. The loss of quality could also be attributed to the tapeless method. No way of knowing 🥴
Adding to the info: I recently picked up an FS-5 and it was a certified fancy looking paperweight. Mine would not allow me to record clips longer than 30 seconds before the unit would freeze up and require me to pull the battery out. It would also freeze when attempting to transfer logged clips to the computer. I’ve heard of people swapping the internal HDD for an SSD but I haven’t gone down that route yet. In the meantime I picked up a Sony HVR-MRC1 which records onto compact flash and works like a charm.-also keeps your clips organized on the card. My reason for going tapeless was because my vx1000 had a tape stuck inside and the camera would not detect it for an eject.. I ended up removing the tape deck altogether from my vx1000 to get rid of the cameras 5 minute auto shut-off and now my rig is a lot lighter as well! Hope this helps someone in the future
i'm pretty sure we'll see this type of retrofitting becoming MORE common and done as a professional service by certain places specifically only doing THAT. And probably also taking care of swapping HDDs from HDD camcorders of the mid 2000s.
