I bought the Sony VX-2100 for $3500 when it was a solid choice for SD, I really wanted the Canon XL-2E, but it would have been another $1000+, and I already pushed my budget to get this camera.
I currently use it to convert MiniDV tapes as well as use the passthrough function to convert analog (VHS/S-VHS) video. For me, it's only one Firewire cable in to an old XP box with Adobe Premiere 2.0 on it. That's it.
No idea why you chose to make this so difficult. It should be obvious that your adapter nonsense is the reason for the bad video, as the monitor on the camera shows the image without faults.
Oh, and I can also use the transport controls in Premiere, which is a nice touch.
The vx cameras is still so expensive because of the action sports communitys, people still love all the vx cameras. A working Sony vx1000 can go for alot of money for being such a old camera!
They want global shutter so much so they're willing to go back to standard def 480i?
Some can do 480p30 - ua-cam.com/video/sOqlSo7atCU/v-deo.html Euro models can do 576p25.
God what a nightmare, Don’t think I will bother
You can get a Canon gl2 for much less. It is less loved by people and just as good if not better.
@@TVperson1 It's not global shutter. 2% of the people who want a VX have any idea about shutter differences. They just want it because the aesthetic is retro and cool again. As someone who filmed skateboarding for a living back in the day it blows my mind people actually desire this horrible quality. My 3 year old iPhone DESTROYS the quality of my old 3 chip camera. Kids these days....
The issue with your small camcorder is just dirty heads, hit play, then fast forward and rewind back and forth over and over until the purple and green bars go away. Not the best method, but it works. Your VX2100 has a dead firewire (IEEE1394) controller, sometimes when you hotplug a 6pin to 4pin firewire cable or converter, the 6pin socket will send the wrong voltage to the 4pin port and overload the controller. (Tip: always turn your camera off when connecting firewire). You may be able to get the boards replaced by a camera repair shop.
Awesome to know. I’ll try the fast-forward-rewind trick with the smaller camera. Thank you.
@Computer Clan, I use a Sony DCR-TRV17 on a monthly basis to record meetings. Your problem with your DCR-VX2100 was that you have DV IN enabled. That feature is used when recording FROM a PC/Mac TO a tape, and MUST be disabled in order to import tapes to Final Cut Pro. This would also cause your 2013 MacBook Pro to not recognize that there was a camera connected. Make sure that DV OUT is enabled in VCR > Menu > VCR SET > A/V->DV OUT setting.
Are you sure? How come sometimes the camera showed up in FCP? It started going in and out, like it was trying to connect, but couldn't. It seemed more like a bug or failure, yeah? I'm curious.
Krazy Ken throws a bunch of converters together, and basically makes a time machine. HINT HINT, there might be a "part 2". ;3 are you going to uploading a video on 21st of January, fluffbutt?
Why the 21st??? : o
it's mbdy ;) Good luck figuring that out.
Is there going to be CCL on 19th of January? Oh and check my description for a hint, fluffbutt.
I don't see any schedule for that right now, sorry.
Nice camcorder. Very popular model, especially in it's PD170 guise. By the way, DV format is already digital. And you're not converting anything. You're just attempting to save the digital data stream into a file.
People want them for skateboarding
lmao me, i wanna get into filming too
My dad has ine
@CommanderAvalanche "skate videos work better with old technology". I'm curious what you mean by this. (I was a professional skateboard filmer back in the miniDV days). I know that using the VX has become some sort of retro thing guys do again for the aesthetic but for the life of me I can't figure out why because if you really want to you can reduce resolution to SD, make it softer and get rid of all the contrast and dynamic range to make footage filmed on any new camera look like it's and old SD camera. Why permanently bake in the crippled quality when you don't need to? SD footage looks absolutely gross on anything bigger than a cell phone. You can see the pixelation at that resolution on handrails etc and I think it looks terrible.
Jason Dashney people love the goldish tinge that comes with the vx1000. And even if you can achieve that with a newer camera through filters and stuff, some people just really like using the vx1000.
@@jasondashney You can't get a VX look out of post-production the same way you can't get a Minimoog sound out of a VST. There's some magic baked into the analog circuitry of old synthesizers and old cameras for that matter. Aliasing, artifacting, color reproduction, etc.
I have a vx2000 with a century mk1 fisheye. Pretty cool to see non skateboard filmers talk about the VX.
How do you do do you use actual Mac? Cause I am gonna buy one and exporting video is one of the thing I worry the most about
I love Mini DV 💓😳
Yes, everyone loved it back then. But video data management and backup has always been an issue during that era. The current modern digital video workflow pushes everything to be file-based for easier management and access, and given that tape quality deterioates in time, it's a priority to properly transfer all taped video content to file-based medium, and to be saved in the corrrct file format settings (a big challenge esp. when saved in any lossy mp4 codec).
If you still need to transfer tapes, get a JVC SR-VS30U S-VHS/MiniDV VCR Combo unit
I had no problem using this camera for imports. Also, why use an 800 to 6 pin firewire? Use an 800 with thunderbolt adapter and firewire 400 at the other end to go straight into the cameras port and eliminate one adapter.
I only used the cables that I had.
btw- I use iMovie to import if that helps
I still use my VX-2100 for shooting basement concerts, the internal mic handles a 96+ decibel environment with no issues whatsoever, it sounds awesome.
Hey man what do you do when your tape jammed I need help with it right now
We still use this camcorder (a VX2000 in particular), we don't have any problem capturing the footage via Pinnacle 510 USB capture card (but I suppose any other capture card with firewire does work). We import video by Studio 14 (Pinnacle) or by Sony's PlayMemories importer (that is free downloadable). It works perfectly. Studio 14 also is good to import HDV footage (from HDV cameras, via Pinnacle 510 USB too), but also HDVSplit is very good. However, the VX2100 is great.
Been trynna get my head round mini dv to digital for ages now still no luck , such a ball ache
This channel needs more subs and views!
To do this on a new Mac with usb-c you would need to buy two cable connecters which are the firewire- thunderbolt and then thunderbolt to USB-C which I will link below. Thats all you need!
Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter
Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter
*CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY* returns
NO conversion, digital data is still digital data
@@LaNoturna1115 not all digital data is the same, at least on the software side
i have never seen someone have so much problems digitizing mini dv tapes
This is the first time I watched you failing! Can I expect a part 2?
Yessir!!
Which version of OSX is running on this iMac?
Lion
So you know what the 'D" in mini DV stands for??
It stands for Digital. So you are not digitalising. You are just copying or converting.
I swear I corrected that in the video… or maybe that was in part 2. I mean, I say "convert" in the title.
Ingesting.
I still use an mini DV Camcorder from Sony in HDY mode and it works fine with magix video deluxe
I just realized why I saved all 3 of my Mini DV Camcorders.
lol
Hi, Help!! I still have Panasonic mini DV camera and want to transfer to my commuter or cloud services. Any suggestions plz.
Maybe this has already been pointed out, but there's no conversion to digital taking place here as stated in the narrative. MiniDV is already digital. The daisy-chained dongles are adapters, not converters. So the "time machine" analogy is rather stretched out, "ancient" firewire is just as digital as "current" thunderbolt.
I guess I basically meant I'm converting from one medium to another-despite them both being digital. I know I kinda botched it.
Hi i have an old panasonic mini dv digital Video camera Nv- GS50, it has a dv out, what would be the lead or leads or adapters or converters to get it to play on my 2013 mac please
I still use the Canon XM1 semi-pro camera for some of my video work - still works great.......8)
Best Video ever!
Glad i read comments. Saved 22 more minutes of waste.
Firewire circuit could be fried on the VX2100. It's not unknown.
Yes, it's been a constant problem with just any product with 1394 interfaces, the choose fails after prolonged use and/or system crashes etc.
About this Mac -> System Report -> FireWire. Check if the Firewire port(s) show(s) up, and see if the camera is attached to it. Takes some of the guess work out of the equation.
But in the video, the iMac shows other cameras working with the ports, so I already did some process of elimination. Just give it a watch ; )
Did you make sure there were firewire drivers on the newer mac?
I am trying to import footage from my Sony TRV33E camcorder into my Mac it doesn’t recognise my camcorder yet when I attach my Sony TRV 110 e I’m able to import footage from it please help.
4 pin firewire is notorious for being intermittent
Isn't the digital video world great?
I just spent 23 minutes watching you have more problems than I have!
MiniDV is also digital. MiniDV (mini digital video) cassettes has about 12gb of storage which is a lot more than memory cards would have had at the time (late 90's to mid 00's). Newer (HDV) cameras was able to record 720p or 1080i video to MiniDV cassettes.
@@Pasi123 yeah? Nobody ever said it wasn't digital...
Hi i have an old panasonic mini dv digital Video camera Nv- GS50, it has a dv out, what would be the lead or leads or adapters or converters to get it to play on my 2013 mac please
Use a FireWire 4-pin to 9-pin cable, then use a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.
Thank you
rest in peace startup sound
these cameras are still popular because they are VERY popular within skateboarding.
I actually have HDV footage from a sony FX1E (first ever hd prosumer camcorder) that I need to get on my new MacBook Pro. I still have an old iMac standing around, but somehow it still won't work.
That’s a lot of conversion technology
Aw! That's a cute little kitty
final cut pro is $300
is there another way to do this without final cut pro?
Use el Gato video capture devise its very versatile I am also wearing or using a cable with the three colors coded outputs CV or RV cables
I plan to experiment with El Gato more soon! Might not be on video, but I'd like to try them out.
@@ComputerClan there is a Jack at the side of the camera that allows to connect the three color coded cables those then are pluged to elgato capture devise the software is dowloaded
hey, so I know this is all for laughs but do you know of an actual video or instructions on how to get this working. like Purley educational pls and thank you.
It’s a damaged camera. That’s all there is. In Part 2, you’ll see I use a different camera which works.
What can you say about the camera, XL2 and similar models, which should be first in the list?
That is a simple adaption job, no conversion anywhere in that loop, it's all digital......
It goes for 400 bucks because it’s a really popular skateboarding camera. The vx1000 goes for even more money
Use FCPX version 10.4 works fine.
You know, there is a perfectly good composite video out on that camera, just hook up a USB composite video capture is record it with OBS.
composite video quality after conversion is terrible. as it is the digital out from the firewire is bad, but at least you get the max quality from what you have at hand.
AV out from camera it is actually an DAC image conversion, so why to convert it double instead of streaming the image as data directly to PC ? Think!
Why resorting to cavemen methods when there is a proper solution?
thank god i found someone w the same camera lmao inever could have done this by myself
The vx2100 is a very popular skate camera which is why it still holds value
Kitties! 🐱🐱
Probably they withdrew Firewire support in later versions of macOS.
FireWire support is still present.
Computer Clan Yeah, but from what I understand the FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter from Apple is a bit particular and doesn’t work with all types of devices - might be misremembering though.
MiniDV tapes ARE digital. You aren't converting. You are downloading the data from the tapes to your computer. Also MiniDV fricking sucks because there's basically no error correction and because its digital, it suffers much more than analog mediums like vhs in the face of data corruption.
cabo firewire com mau contato!!! o conector firewire da VX2100 deve estar quebrado e o cabeçote da câmera menor esta sujo!!! E o Final Cut Pro X reconhece sim cameras firewire!
This is why dongles suck.
What kind of tapes are those ?
10:49 you stole my version of the joke. Because i used .TOAST files
"What could possible go wrong?"... its a MAC.
A 4 pin to 800 firewire cable is available and a much cheaper solution
Cheaper compared to what? Also, keep in mind, the FireWire port on this camera (or something else) was failing.
but minidv is digital
I thought I corrected myself in the video… I meant "capture".
Computer Clan ok cheers
Is it just where i live or is finding any firewire is almost impossible
FireWire is an older technology, so it is harder to find, but it's not impossible.
Ebay is you friend.
I have a question, I received three mini dv tapes that I need to convert. The tapes were done on a very high end camera I believe on EP speed.
When playing back on a normal mini dv player it comes out choppy and audio is off.
I have one time seen this when played on a normal player it looks like the tape is damaged, but played fine on that high end player.
Unfortunately the person with the high end camera passed and I do not have access to this camera.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there any work around? Thank You for your help.
is there like some sort of lines on playback? If so, a very heavy duty Sony DVCAM deck can sometimes tapes like that
@@rupert6478 Consumer MiniDV and DVCAM have some different standards including EP recording speed and such, AFAIK. Since the average consumer can't have access to pro playback equipment perhaps the best way to preserve the taped material would be to find a facility that would handle such digital transfer properly. This needs to be done ASAP as tape quality deterioates in time even under proper stage and handling......
@@vampyrelycan99 I've also heard that a lot of decks have trouble playing back tapes recorded in LP and you should use the original camera used to record that footage to play back the LP tapes
@@rupert6478 I've heard that, but could not recall much. What could be the reason behind such "compatibility" issues? Maybe there's some slight inconsistency in the hardware's head alignment, from unit to unit?
@@vampyrelycan99 i think that’s another plausible one. like you said, if a camcorders heads are misaligned and you record something, no machine will be able to play the tape unless its heads are misaligned exactly like the cam.
"This is crazy" well you are Krazy Ken!
Oh
Hi Ken, what camera are you using to record this video?
Blackmagic URSA Mini 4K
Just buy one on eBay 60 bucks make sure the battery holds a charge and iMovie from 2014 works great
Why spend money when you can scavenge around and borrow one for free? And did you see part 2, yet?
Computer Clan that works, i guess if you got help thats all you need
Computer Clan glad you figured it out after all that trial and error, for science!
Yep! For science!
Can we do this conversion on PC?
haha you are hilarious dude
Is it possible that it's not the cameras but, the conversion devices or even the firewire cable itself?
The video will tell you ; )
MiniDV equipment -> Mac...that's the root cause.
Uh, no. Macs work great with this stuff. Heck, the first computer with FireWire 400 (and realtime DV capture) built in was on a Mac. The camera was malfunctioning.
@@ComputerClan Was skipping so much when first viewed that I missed the vital point...silly me.😅😅
Got similar experience...2 like new/fully functional camcorders that still record/play fine, except completely dead fitewire port. Hmmmmmmmm...
Mini firewire port is imho one of the poorest designed thing in computer industry.🤔
@@Nantawat_Kittiwarakul not sure about the poor design part, but it was meant to be a real-time video transfer thing from 1995. *That's all I know anyways
Jesus... Just threw a Firewire PCI card in my desktop. which would be the RIGHT way to do it. i feel like your going to impact the quality with all those jenky dongles and converters. I'm likely wrong, just a thought
Tell me where I would POSSIBLY fit a FireWire card in a notebook that's thinner than my finger. ; ) And no, the quality will not be impacted.
@@ComputerClan That's why i said desktop. Did i not say desktop? Oh, i did say desktop. :)
