Ricoh GR - Custom Color Profile - my "Leica Look"

- In this video I demonstrate how I create a custom color profile for shooting jpegs that have a "Lecia Look".
Rembember... this is subjective and these are my preferred settings. Yours might be different. The cool thing is, this camera lets us all experiment!
Disclaimer: the sample images at the end of this video won't look as good as they do on my 42" TV. They've been through video compression, uploaded to UA-cam, and no doubt compressed again. But, you will get an idea of what I'm talking about.

I tried out a dozen or more profiles and none of them looked quite right. Now I know what I was missing. This recipe is perfect, thank you for sharing
Thank you!
Amazing how flexible this tiny camera is. I have booked a cruise in summer and hope to get familiar with all the possibilities till than. I think these settings are perfect for that trip. Thanks a lot for this step-by-step tutorial.
thank you!
I’m learning so much from you. I too have Leica Q2, (keeping it), but I agree, it’s too heavy in my hands (I’m 70 years of age); so I now have the GR III and the IIIX, and learning the menus. The GR’s are a pleasure to hold. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge.
Thank you. I’ll do my best to keep things interesting.
Still refer to this vid in 2024 - like this settings alot
I think boosting the saturation is the key bc Ricoh has the closest color rendition to Leica than any other brand. The lens, while sharp, can't produce the micro contrast that say the Leica Q does but hey it's pretty close!
I used your Leica look today all day in Amsterdam and I like it. Thanks for sharing.
Great looking photos! Love your composition and especially love the city skyline shot!
Thank you very much!
i have the gr3 and love it. I love positive film effect but i'm having trouble getting the same color profiles in my other cameras. I just got a olympus em-1 mk1 and this helps me get close with a custom profile. but i'm still playing with the colors to get the reds just right between them. The skin tons out of the gr3 are just perfect with good lighting.
Photo Stuff - good stuff! I like your videos. Practical, to the point, clear, useful. Thanks. And I like the look this setting produces.
Great stuff. Indeed, your color look has that Leica "bite" to the contrast, color and sharpness. The next to the last shot with the woman coming out of the door has spectacular tones.
Well, thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
I'm not sure if you have already done this, but understanding your workflow (and why) would be fantastic. Jpegs or raw, file size? Post processing? How you setup file storage, etc... I know those are not Ricoh specific, but they also are crucial to the end result. Thanks!
@@stephencifka4629 well I haven’t mentioned it specifically, I hinted at what I prefer to do, but I haven’t covered it as video… noted. Maybe one for the future. Cheers.
Excellent video- thank you! I look forward to trying these settings.
You’re welcome 😉
this is ineresting and very well explained.
Really like this and your monochrome recipe! Ty for sharing!
Thanks a lot. Glad you like it :)
Thank you so much! Exactly what I was looking for. Is there any difference to doing it this way instead of going the recipe route with more settings to change?
@@Kids11111 no, it’s the same. I just don’t set a fixed white balance. I like to keep some things on auto.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
Amazing, thanks! Love the recipe! Although I am getting image banding in some of my GR III pictures due to the shading -1 setting.. Did you experience this youself?
Edit: Actually I can see some banding in the clear sky in some of your photos when I look carefully. Did you notice this yourself, and does it not bother you? It's usually not very visible, but when I was shooting at night then it became very visible on a couple of occasions.
As I’m sure you know, banding occurs in natural light because of the 8 bit nature of jpegs. Banding can also occur with electric lights due to frequency issues. In complicated images, I don’t notice banding. Shading- vignetting - creates gradients and it’s too much for jpegs.
In landscapes and such, I’d use the raw file instead, especially for printing.
This is really awesome, but i tried to set positive film i/o standard , all setting is same,
I think it is similar but dark side is more dark and quite cool tone, can you check and tell us how you feel if your set started from positive films
this is great 👍🏼..too bad i only have the 1st gen GR..very informative thank you!
you're welcome :-)
I used these settings on a recent trip. I loved the look of the images! Thanks for sharing. Are you still using the same settings that you've shown in the video or have you made any tweaks/improvements since making the video?
I still use the same color settings on both cameras, but when shooting landscapes, I change the “shading” setting from -1 to 0 or +1 to remove the vignetting that I like indoors or in street photography or portraits. 👍
Thanks for sharing, have to try out this.
I Hope you like it.
Thx for this video. Love it. One question. Do you use the standard automatic whitebalance or do i have to change something about it?
Thanks. I use standard auto WB.
Set and ready for next day....Thanks mate
Do you use custom white balance? I find that my GR3's auto white balance looks very cool compared to your photos.
No, auto whit balance for the most part. I will look at other WB settings if I've shot in RAW and I'm developing in-camera.
Great content, thanks for sharing! However, I watched the video at 2x speed and it's still too slow.
Thanks, will give this setting a try
Great! Hope you like it.
Your videos are the best I've seen on the Ricoh GRIIIx! Now that I've created my custom Leica Look, do I just access it through the Adj button to shoot using those parameters? Thanks.
Yes, just use custom1 or 2 just like any of the other profiles. If you like, you also just create this color profile directly on the standard profile.
Thank you for sharing this!
Please you can also indicate Highlight Correction, Shadow Correction, Peripheral Illumination Correction, High-ISO Noise Reduction, White Balance and WB Compensation?
Hi, all of these “corrections” .. I usually switch off. I like a bit of vignetting on anything other than landscape images, and I control the highlights through metering. I let the Ricoh control the white balance, so Auto WB. ISO noise reduction is on auto and standard settings. (I don’t change that).
@@photostuff❤
@@photostuffme too like you, thanks for your channel and your guides.
I’m a bit confused with usage of this profile and raw. I’m under the impression this profile won’t work when shooting raw, but I did some tests shooting the same photo with jpeg and raw, they both look the same on export
Great video, is this still the color profile you use?
Yes, but I’ve been playing around with some of the other settings, basically switching off Peripheral illumination correction, and dynamic range correction for shadows. I don’t mind vignetting, in fact, I embrace it, because the GRiii can’t really get subject isolation by way of bokeh, I find natural vignetting is the next best thing.
@@photostuff yeah same here, I enjoy having some vignetting
Thank you, I like the look 👍.
Grazie
Thanks so much for this. It's brilliant ! I love the colour palette. When you shot these in Stockholm were you on AV? Were you still using spot metering and highlight weighted metering? Thanks Karin
Thanks Karin!
Yes, 90% of the shots are in AV and I always use this color profile now as my general color setting.
There were some shots where I switched metering modes and others where I switched to TV as well.
I’m going out shooting the sunset today at a little port by a big lake, and I’ll be experimenting with metering modes, but the color profile will be this, and I will be shooting AV. Cheers!
how to copy this settings on my GR2?thanks~
Sorry, I don't have a GR2, so I don't know if it is possible to create all these setting on a GR2.
@@photostuff thank u for the same.
Is the settings work with RAW files?
No. Only jpegs. RAW files are always the same no matter what.
Enjoying your videos. Any way to rename this custom Leica "recipe"? It comes up as "Std" on the shooting screen, which is confusing since there already is a "Std" image control mode.
No unfortunately I don’t think there is.
I came to this video from your more recent one on the U1-3 positions to find out the specific way of saving the settings when constructing a set for U1. This is actually different as you are saving it for the standard/default setting. Wouldn't it solve Chris's question by just saving the Leica settings to one of the U positions? Don't know if you can put a name on those.
Thanks for your sharing on the color profile, indeed it looks like from a M240 from my point of view. Now it is more fun and it is staying in my bag always considering the profile and the small size.
Yes, it's wonderful.
I've owned 4 different Sony models ranging from about $400->$4000 and none of them have the color processing power of the Ricoh GR.
I think Sony are great technical cameras but are dependent on Post software to get the best out of them, where as with Ricoh, it's SOOC goodness.
@@photostuff I shared the same view with you, not sure if it is just me, Sony SOOC is greyish, with Ricoh now I am more happy :) Thanks once again!
@@ryanli8096 it’s not that I don’t like Sony, it just lacks control. It’s a take it or leave it deal :)
I do like the monochrome that comes out of the RX1R, but I just think Ricoh blow the competition away - including Fuji :)
Care to share the brand of that thumb grip? Awesome content btw👍
Thank you. I'll get back to you on the thumb grip.
TBH, I haven't used it since getting the leather case, and I don't really miss it... yet :-)
Sorry mate, it’s just a generic GR3 thumb grip with no markings on it. It came free with the second GR3 I bought used. So I can’t tell you where it came from or who made it :(
Hi fantastiskt just what i want to learn, I live in Sweden Linköping, But of my time are in Spain, have the x100f, But Leica is my passion have an old one digilux 2, have u a mail or home page I can get in touch with u would be fantastic to get some help🤗
Hi Leonard, what did you have in mind?
@@photostuff Hi well i would like to make my x100f, Had this for 5 months still think the menu on it is far too big compared with Leica, Maybe you could help me set it up been on UA-cam but yours seems to be the best explanation,Will take a look at your video again and maybe I can do it myself 🤔🤔🤗
@@leonardlister4087 ok. I don’t have a Fuji myself. I used to, but I sold it. I also thought the menu was a mess. Good luck with it :)
