Sony A7Rii + Sony 40mm F2.5 G golden hour walk about
Переглядів 2553 місяці тому
So, time to get out and make some images with the (new to me) A7Rii and Sony G series 40mm f2.5.
Re-creating the Sony RX1R ii - or trying to :)

I wanted a compact companion for my Ricoh GRiii, with an awesome lens, something between a 35mm and a 55mm with a fast aperture, a shallow depth of field, and sharp glass. A full frame sensor with 40-50 megapixels, good low light performance, great dynamic range. The Sony RX1R ii was my first choice. Second choice would be a Leica Q2. I ended up trying something else!

Sadly no, but it has a couple of new software features that I'll look at in a future video, because those software features are just firmware enhancements, so us GR3 and GR3x owners will get them too. And ... it has a new hardware feature. The new version is called the Ricoh GRiii/x HDF - and...

Ricoh GR 101 #5.2 - Aperture Priority and Depth of Field
Tip: if you do this against a white wall it’s far easier to detect black spots
Enjoy your videos and if I may I have a question that’s GRIII related but off topic. Suddenly my GRIII will not select the max 2.8 aperture whatever mode I select. I almost 100% certain I haven’t changed any settings so likely hardware however, can you relate to any setting that could effect this? Thanks.
@@MartinHarvey not even when the dial is on Av ?
I went for a GRIIIx lately, I'm very happy about it. I also own a GRII but I always had a hard time getting used to the 28mm, and a secondhand RX1R which I loved but got the infamous e61 error. The GRIIIx is a great compromise and I don't miss the RX1 one bit (except in low light, but the ibis can work some magic here). It's so much fun shooting one hand with a Ricoh. Go for the Q3 43 if you can! 😀
What’s ur white balance settings?
@@mamayem9251 always auto, so it can adapt to changes
I just received my GC-12 and it’s going back to Amazon tonight. Let’s all get together and have something designed custom. This leather feels like plastic. Ricoh should be ashamed of themselves. This should have come with the camera!
Thanks for such in depth info!
The Ricoh GR IIIX will be my first camera in years - it will arrive on October 8th. I am watching all of these through right now and will watch them again when my camera comes in! These are SO HELPFUL! Thank you for making these!
thank you senpai
I have done this on my GRiii, I have a GRiiix arriving tomorrow I will set up BBF and your Leica look and Monochrome settings, BBF will b e very useful with the 40mm lens.
Hi may i know what shutter speed, f stop did you used?
Because I use aperture priority, the camera controls the shutter speed. Indoors, you need as much light as possible, so shoot at F2.8
This Leica look converts to black and white very well in PP.
Why when I long press the video button the WiFi is showing on the screen like your video but it goes away and not showing on the screen
Sorry mate, I can not explain that.
Went to try it out this morning, it works very well no lag when you press the shutter button.
Love this, I had no idea you could use BBF on the GR and it’s so easy to set up, I have it on my DSLR cameras and on my Leica M9 I just use the rangefinder, thanks!
Tnx finally a good explanation
Many thanks
Great video ! Thanks for taking the time !
You know what's better than this? It is the og GR digital case. I recently got the GC-12 from amazon and while it is more minimal and modern looking than the GR digital case it offers less protection than the GR d case. It also fits perfectly well and it has a ring in the back for hook.
What is considered "low light?"
@@stefanlabuschagne6905 I’d say, when the camera starts ramping up the iso or lowering the shutter speed in any of the automatic modes, or gives you an exposures warning when shooting manual mode.
Why i cant connect? The model number does not match Thank you No mine GR III HDF in menu. I choose GR III, it doesn't sound like the name of my camera
@@привет-и7и7х sorry mate, mine is an information channel, not Ricoh customer support 😊
Damm never out if focus images anymore. 90% is going to be focused where i want
With the latest firmware you can now switch between 1 second snap and back to your preferred focus settings by pressing a button, I set this to the FN button. Fantastic camera!
Please you can also indicate Highlight Correction, Shadow Correction, Peripheral Illumination Correction, High-ISO Noise Reduction, White Balance and WB Compensation?
Hi, all of these “corrections” .. I usually switch off. I like a bit of vignetting on anything other than landscape images, and I control the highlights through metering. I let the Ricoh control the white balance, so Auto WB. ISO noise reduction is on auto and standard settings. (I don’t change that).
@@photostuff❤
@@photostuffme too like you, thanks for your channel and your guides.
I also completely customized my Ricoh GRIII. I preferred to put the switch to SNAP Focus on the FN button and the AE lock on the left click (ISO) of the main wheel, since I set the ISO to auto min and max.

this is ineresting and very well explained.
Very helpful thank you 🙏🏻 Question: when you set up the wireless/movie button to Touch AF do you need to do that for every user setting or should it save for all of them? Thanks in advance.
@@efatcwo if you’ve already saved some user profiles, then yes you might have to. If you haven’t saved any yet, then no, it will be saved for each new one you create.
@@photostuffok thank you. I have saved some so was curious if there was a way around setting each one but I’ll get to it! Taking the camera to Skye, Glasgow, and Edinburgh starting next week. Excited to take a billion photos! Thanks again 😊

Beautifully laid out and so helpful. Thank you kindly.
Do you happen to know how something up close (1m distance) in Aperture Priority mode with f2.8 - 7.1 is not in focus while in P mode it selects f4.0 automatically and it is perfectly in focus?
@@FreedomOfSport which focus mode are you using ?
Thank you so much! Exactly what I was looking for. Is there any difference to doing it this way instead of going the recipe route with more settings to change?
@@Kids11111 no, it’s the same. I just don’t set a fixed white balance. I like to keep some things on auto.
Good info, sir. Can you have full press snap focus and also touch screen to focus and shoot both available at the same time? That's what I'd like to do if I bought this camera. I'd mostly touch screen to focus and shoot as you could generally have larger apertures and subsequently faster speeds and lower iso than snap focusing. I'd be very keen to use the phone connection too in order to be able to get street shots when people are very near and would be alerted. I love the idea of being able to get a photo of people lining up to get off the train while they think I'm just looking at my phone. I tried to take one once with my current camera and a guy right in front of me was really angry. Hey ho.Cheers!
@@m.s.g1890 yes you can. Configure the shutter button for full press snap and the touch screen for focus and shoot.
@@photostuff brilliant, thanks 🙏🏻 a
Thank you so much !😊
Very well explained. Thank you!
This is very useful for quickly understanding the button layout and functions they perform when you first buy the camera.
Thank you for the video, but I do have one question. What happens if the person that you lock focus on moves, do you have to re-focus before taking the shot? Thanks, Bob
@@Bob71650 i think that depends on the type of focus. If you’re tracking then probably not. If they’re moving side to side a little, then again, probably not. But if you’re using regular AF and they’re moving towards you then yes, you’ll probably have to refocus.
It actually saves not only thumbnail to preview, but whole full size JPEG inside a RAW file. Image viewers on a computer can show it and you also can extract this JPEG using some image viewers or with EXIF tools.
Fantastically useful video, thank you!
@@michaeljgwalton thanks 🙏
Beautiful shots! Thanks for the adapter tip
i have the gr3 and love it. I love positive film effect but i'm having trouble getting the same color profiles in my other cameras. I just got a olympus em-1 mk1 and this helps me get close with a custom profile. but i'm still playing with the colors to get the reds just right between them. The skin tons out of the gr3 are just perfect with good lighting.
You didn't really clarify the upsides to setting the shutter-speed to a minimum of 1/10 instead of the stock 1/40. Would you mind explaining that? Amazing series tho, you helped me tons!
The current GR a cameras have great IBIS, so going to a lower shutter speed helps in poorer light conditions. But it’s an individual choice, based on your own confidence when shooting hand held. But, you also have to consider motion blur. If that’s an issue, then but up the shutter speed, open up the aperture and let the camera raise the ISO.
Pretty new to shooting but I don't understand why setting it to 6.3 in the first place? Why not go for the lowest setting even in daylight environments? I only see upsides with going as low as possible (if you are in for the depth of field obviously) - what am I missing?
For the GRiii, f6.3 is great for a deep depth of field, which is what most people want for street photography, travel and environmental portraits.
Thank you so much for these videos. First thing I'm gonna do is reset the camera and start all over. Watched a lot of videos but everyone has their own preferences but at least yours are clear.
Try the Sony /Zeiss 35 f 2.8 , tiny great quality
I got the Sony 40mm f2.5 G and the samyang 45 f1.8. I’m keeping the 40 G.
@@photostuff I have an A7RII and both lenses. The Sony Sonnar T FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA is a noticeably smaller and lighter lens. It is much closer to your idea of recreating the Sony RX1R ii.
@@Vrhcom it probably is, but I like the slightly tighter 40. I’m really enjoying this lens.
