I believe you are thinking too much. It sells that much because of its taxi variant. That sells like hot cakes. 2L units are not all bought by families. High percentage of it is the "Tour H3" model. Similar to Dzire sales. The place where I stay and nearby areas, in last 3-4 months, I have probably seen 2-3 WagonR with white plates. The Taxi model of WagonR(Yellow number plate) is everywhere. I can see 2 parked outside right now waiting to pick up people.
I dont think Wagon R looks uglu. It just looks plain and a bit boring. But it is popular to to affordability and its simplicity as well as cheap ownership costs.
The safety ratings have added a lot of ornamental nice to haves in their ratings. One has to understand that no on actually intends to play crashing cars on highway except a few bhaukal showoffs maybe. Lots of cars have a better experience and value for money just like wagon R. Just adding steel from a sister concern and getting a high safety ratings takes you just about so far, Tatas should underatand and focus on better experience rather than persuade influencers to sing songs on safety
