I stumbled across this as a native speaker and found it fascinating. It's one of those things I'd never thought about. The stative verb you can use with -ing which first sprang to my mind when you started to explain was 'to think'. 'What are you thinking about?' or 'I'm was just thinking'.
As a C2 I keep coming to your videos because you always have something new to teach me, or remind me of basic lessons that I probably forgot about, so I'm thanking you for that 🌻
Awesome, I've been teaching English with Grammar in Focus for over 25 years, but it has never been so easy to explain the usage of Stative Verbs and the situations in which it is natural to use some stative verbs in continuous form
"I'm not understanding anything today!" it's the kind of phrase I would never, not in a million years say to our beloved teacher Aly. Because he makes from every single video the most amazing and funny classes.
This video reminds me of an iconic line from my high school English teacher. Her: Don't you ever use the word "start" in the continuous form. Me: watching videos when real English people use "start" in the continuous form. Confusion intensifies. I'm so glad that you show the real and more natural side of English. Few teachers go beyond textbook rules. Splendid job and video ❤️
I think it's obvious why mcdees uses quote I'm loving it." they're using it because it's just off enough that people are going to remember it. The typical person probably isn't going to get that" I'm loving it"is not really correct English, but it WILL stay in their in their minds because it sounds kind of odd. And don't forget that we can use HAVE in the continuous form when we talk about having a good time because that's an activity verb.
I love this one. Been using some without even realizing it. XD Though some of these sound kinda weird, so I won't use every single one I've discovered in this video. Still thank you, it was a great explanation ^-^
Thank you for this lesson. ❣️ Could I ask you a question ? I can't help (doing ) and I can't help but ( do) . What is the difference between them ?? I am hating these two phrases. They really confuse me a lot.
As I'm typing this comment, I'm remebering what you explained and I'm understanding better how to use stative verbs in a continuous tense. One word for this video...Superb!
I really liked to know about the verb "understand" about the possibility to use It in a stative way, cause in portuguese we use this verb in continuous form refering to something that is happening at the moment. And when I have to use It in a simple tense, It doesnt make Sense for me... I don't know If you understand my point....
Hi. Thanks a lot ! great. I'm from France and I heard you say " you compare it to other moments WHERE you didn't feel like..." I've always learnt that we must say ..."expression of time" WHEN,. So what's the rule? Thank you so much for your explanations and videos.
Hello Aly, I've always wanted to ask about this; There is a wonderful song that I guess you also know, named "Under pressure" by Queen. In lyrics I see this sentence "Sat on a fence but it don't work" it don't work, is it because of the melody and maybe rhythm of the song? Or in daily life sometimes people say "he/she/it don't"?
Great question! ✌️😁 songs usually don’t use correct grammar either because it sounds better than way or it rhymes better or it feels better to match the feeling of the song
Hi Ali! What about "Enjoy", looks stative to me. When I speak in general about let's say "pizza with olives" I would say: I've enjoyed it since childhood. But if we imagine I'm eating this pizza now and say to my friend sitting next to me: "I've been enjoying it since childhood" Is it correct?
It's a nonbrainer. If smb offers , this person will do it. ( I offered to help him). To suggest means to give an idea to smb ( I suggest buying him a car). To propose is the same as suggest , but it's formal English. ( the speaker proposed to finish the meeting)
I still remember how I asked my English teacher: "Are you seeing the presentation?" I thought it was actually okay (?) to say something like that... Like: "Can you see it right now?" Needless to say that she screamed at me 🤡 (yeah, grammar isn't my thing, so sorry if there are any mistakes 😬)
I was in a chat room a few years ago and used a stative verb in the present continuous. Don't remember which now. Anyway an ESL person wrote me "you can't use that verb like that". I explained you do if you want to sound fluent. He wasn't having it. He was one of those annoying chatters that often caused a bit of strife. Oh well, go on sounding like a stiff text book if that's your goal sir.
I am a native speaker and I would never advise someone to say “I am not loving it” even in the moment. It’s way to easy to get wrong particularly when “I don’t love it “ would be also be correct and you harder to get it wrong. Another example “how is he feeling?” “He is hurting” (reflexive) is very natural in context but might sound like an action verb “he is hurting her”
What about Perfect Continuous Tenses? Does the meaning change? For example: I’ve been wanting to talk to you. She’s been loving her new job How’s school? Have you been understanding everything well? Can I say it?
Yeah, I am thinking about the consistency of English grammar. Is "thinking about " an action verb ? Dynamic ? Then, what is the exact definiton of dynamic? It turns out to be bullshit . Every teacher has their own way of interpretation.

Stative verbs as present participles appear in other circumstances, too. Such as gerunds, adjectival phrases, absolute phrases, and resultative states. What a nightmare this topic is.
Other examples of how broken English is nowadays. 1. Using 'more' for short adjectives in comparative sentences: This is more cheap than that. 2. Using 'there's' for plural nouns: There's beers in the fridge. 3. Using flipped grammar in some conditional sentences: If you would have known... 4. Using 'no' to ask tag questions: You live in California, no? 5. Not using adverbs of manner: I didn't say that correct.
