Whenever I hear this song, I'm reminded of a story they told in an interview about their Japanese tour. They had not been told, before their first concert there, of one cultural difference... Japanese audiences, especially back then, paid respect to the artist by remaining silent to hear every last detail- no demonstrations during a performance that would spoil someone's appreciation of it. So there they were on stage, doing their magic to absolute silence... no shouts, no sing alongs, no lighters held high. They thought they were bombing! They poured their hearts and souls out on stage, trying to get a response, but the more effort they made the more silent the entire stadium was! As the opening song was coming to an end, they thought it was a total failure... but as the last note ended, and they stood there in silent exhaustion, THEN the audience exploded, long ovations! Lol!
Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea!
Lol as a Japanese pro wrestling fan, you can still see that cultural feature to this day.
Cheap Trick live at budokan was def an exception lol.
Sometimes I wish North American crowds were more like that. I understand sing alongs, most of the time the bands encourage that. But whistling or shouting during quieter parts of songs is just annoying. I didn't pay to hear some douche yelling " OH YEAH" in the middle of a song.
I think they may have been messing with the interviewer. Go watch The Beatles at Budokan in 1966, years before Deep Purple ever became famous or played in Japan. The audience is screaming throughout the concert.
From a deep purple fan since 1970. Now 63 years old. You really have to appreciate the musicianship and vocals in all of their music. Recommend the song "Never Before from machine head album or Fireball from the fireball album. Keep rockin you two! Old Jeff is digging seeing you youngsters getting down. Long live rock and roll!
Fireball 👌🏼
Agreed.
Hey Lex how do you like them 70s Now ?
Check out “ Nothing at All “ off one of the newer albums I think you’ll love it. They’re still rocking and putting out good music.
Yes Jeff, NEVER BEFORE is a personal fave of mine too.
Deep Purple had a real connection to their Japanese audience. I can see why.
Japan is a great place to record. The audience is very polite, not rowdy.
She makes him see the beauty in life, love, intimacy, and such!
I am not sure Brad understands. Lex just agrees with Brad so he will move on…😅
I am not sure Brad understands. Lex just agrees with Brad so he will move on…😅
Deep Purple had a lot to be thankful for from Japan 🤣 It was their 1972 live album 'Made in Japan' that made the band a massive commercial success worldwide, after the 'Machine head' album.
How about 1975's "Burn?" I always thought that was my all time #1 Deep Purple album. i guess bcz I grew up with it and memorized all the lyrics and songs on guitar. "Made in Japan," I've heard many, many times. Even recently, I drive on I 5 and crank up "Highway Star," Live Made in Japan.
@@ChicagoBeaver I was talking about Japan and the record that broke Deep Purple commercially... 'In rock' & 'Fireball' did well, but 'Machine head' and 'Made in Japan' made the band superstars.
'Burn' was Deep Purple at their commercial peak in 1974 after those successes...
BURN.1974
As someone who was stationed on Okinawa a few times back in the late 70’s & early 80’s, I trained at Camp Fuji several times and visited Tokyo often, this song always takes me back there ! Love it
OoRah!
I was at Kadena 81-83, when my CO called me while I was on range duty, to tell me I had orders to Oki this was on the radio.
I got to get back to Charlie's Tacos.
Don't know what I enjoy more:Lex's response to the song or Brads response to Lex lol!
I know right!! 🤩
This song is so flippin’ cool.
THE COOOLIST
I had no idea, thanks mate.
I don't even care anymore if you guys make any sense. You two are freakin hilarious 😂
Thank you for going outside the "Norms" of DP, they have a litany of deep cuts that showed just how versatile they really were. Kudos, If I hear Smoke On The Water one more time, lol.
100 more times lol This is how us 70s Brats rocked our asses off some a bithchs
Deep Purple is such a phenomenal band.
One of my favorite songs
Ian Paice on drums and Jon Lord on keyboard is unmatched .
RITCHIE and ROGER TOO.......!!
.........and the voice....IAN G.WOW..!
More music from my teens 50 years ago. What a great time.
Mine to I was 11 in 1972 ,, Lex looks bored to this 70s Hit jam song though
Always loved Ian Gillian’s voice❤
J.C. Superstar..
Thank you!! I haven't listened to this song in quite a long while. Their live version of "Strange Kinda Woman" off the Made in Japan album features one of the longest screams in rock. Ian Gillian is/was incredible!
Another great song from Deep Purple I was wondering when someone was going to react to this song... great
I was with a Japanese woman for 5 years, I still regret losing her every day. She was so incredibly beautiful inside and out.
I think the song is allegorical. Their “Made in Japan” album, recorded at the Budokan, the famous Sumo wrestling venue in Tokyo was what helped launch them into a much higher gear on the World Stage. The whole band was taken aback by the support they had so far away. I think that experience is the gist of the song. For years I thought it was a live recording because in some parts there is reverb that sounds like a concert hall. But the wizard of production, Martin Birch, who went on to produce Iron Maiden (his Purple connection is why they asked for him, I think, not 100% sure) pulled off quite a good live feel from the studio.
Gillan says so too 😊
Only 'Lazy' and 'The Mule' were recorded in Tokyo. There was a full concert recorded there but the Second Concert in Osaka was mainly used. 'Smoke on the Water' recorded at Osaka on the previous evening.
@@jamestulk5111 Thanks for the info. Years ago I’d have known that, but nowadays I’m experiencing a phenomenon called “Lovebites”, one of whose guitarists was influenced, to an extent, by Ritchie, because her mom and dad bought her up on a diet of Purple and Rainbow. Check them out….whether it’s your thing or not, their talent is off the charts. ua-cam.com/channels/90wxogt_sQrP0Os0HT-xuw.html
What a good song off what was the last album for that version of Deep Purple until Perfect Strangers, a decade later. Try that title cut, it reinvigorated their career. Enjoy! 🎶🎸🎤🎹🎵
Deep Purple's "Made in Japan" 1 of my favorite albums. They should have this track on it, lol. Rock on Brad & Lex
Would have been nice, but they would have needed a time machine, since this track is from 1973 and Made In Japan was recorded in 1972. 😁
@@frankpentangeli7945 Indeed you are correct. enjoy your day sir
@@frankpentangeli7945 Thing is, "Woman from Tokyo" was recorded in July 1972, before their first Japan tour in August 1972 so theoretically Deep Purple could have played this brand new track for their future shows in Japan (and included it on their live album Made in Japan) but since this track was then unreleased and planned for their next studio album, they decided to keep it aside in order to include it on Who Do We Think We Are (which was recorded in July 1972 and October 1972 then published in January 1973).
@@a.k.1740 Fair enough ... good point. I'm not convinced that's the reason they didn't perform it live, since they did play some songs in concert before they were released on record (Highway Star, for instance, which I read they performed the same day it was written). Having said that, I acknowledge that Woman From Tokyo was recorded before they played those concerts in Japan in 1972, so they definitely could have performed it on stage there had they wanted to.
@@frankpentangeli7945 I think the real reason they didn't play "Woman from Tokyo" on those dates in Japan in '72 is that Ritchie Blackmore was reluctant to play that track, just as he was also reluctant to play tracks from the album Who Do We Think We Are on their Spring '73 tour. He always said he didn't like the album just as he was never a fan of the Fireball album (or later, Stormbringer). From Who Do We Think We Are (which was fresh at the time), only "Mary Long" was played on these early 1973 dates (and not every night !). It wasn't until Deep Purple came back in '84 that the band started playing "Woman from Tokyo" live.
My favorit deep purple song♥
Just goes to show that DEEP PURPLE is the greatest !!! There will never be another , especially their first eight years , never be another !! Loved em for over 40 years !!!
The boy's bridge was heart pounding for sure I dig it, it's grooven!
DEEP. PURPLE - Storm Bringer 1974 yet another super massive music hit just one of many awsome songs from this Rockin' band.
As a fella thats been to Tokyo... This song reminds me of the beauties of Japan.
Deep Purple Made in Japan is one of my desert isle albums. Grand Funk Live album, Kiss Alive, Rush Live, UFO live, some of the best live albums out there.
AND from recent videos - My real and sincere congratulations. Two great people with a great future.x
Well, someone finally got to this one. Nice. 🤘😎
My favorite Deep Purple song, thanks.
My Fav Deep Purple song Ands from the 1970s Baby
Always loved this song, never knew who sang it. So, thanks for that.
Great song...been so samn long since I heard it. 🥳❤
I'll never forget my mom coming into my room one Saturday morning in the Summer of 1974 around 10AM to get my ass outta bed, opening the blinds and curtain to let the sunshine in. I happened to have Joe Walsh's "Meadows" playing on the radio, and she said "That sounds like "Woman From Tokyo" "...I was gobsmacked, because at the time all the FM dj's said it sounded just like "Woman From Tokyo" and all she listened to at the time was AM Talk Radio....R I P, mom.
I'll bet this song inspired 1000's of bands. It was a whole new sound when it came out.
It sounds like a song written about a groupie experience to me. Still one of my favorite Deep Purple songs!
One of my fav DP songs. I appreciate the musicianship on this one, especially of Jon Lord, Ian Paice, and Roger Glover.
My favorite deep purple tune.
Great choice for a reaction! And as someone else said, the musicianship on this song is just fantastic. But then again this is my favorite album from them.
Rocking!
DP's 2nd biggest song (radio wise) behind Smoke On the Water. Totally LOVE this song. And Lex. Keyboardist Jon Lord DOES play classical, and Jazz, Blues and Rock.
I love the way the song fades out, and then they just hit you full force with rock and roll
I love this song by them
It was a huge jam in 1972 My Fav D,P song
This song has always been my favorite Deep Purple song, and one of my favorite rock songs period. Certainly makes my top five list.
Deep Purple was one of my favorite bands in high school. Good to hear them again. Tks!
Such a great rock song love rock song it takes to draw you right in and it makes you wanna fly to Japan and find one of those beauties right now. Amazing. Amazing song.
Rockin" from the masters! Lex is right. Men love women like High School boys forever!
Great song. My all time favourite band.
mine too...
The bridge of this song sounds like something This Is Spinal Tap parodied in one of the songs in the movie.
I’ve been waiting for you to get to this song.. gotta dig their strange kind of woman (live in Japan) just to see Lex’s reaction.
I really always thought this said BLIND woman from Tokyo. It just makes sense because the “she makes me see” line after it. Crazy
My fav Deep Purple song right there!
In the '70's magazines like Circus, Creem, Rock Scene kept you years ahead on the cool bands. Later Trouser Press, New Musical Express, Gig, and others came along, and were slightly less sensationalist.
And Rolling Stone mag was and always be a shit mag.
I read creem and circus on a regular basis in the 80’s and occasionally Hit Parader
This is MY favorite Deep Purple song. Rock-n-Roll as it was meant to be.
Thanks! Hadn't heard that great song in some time.
Now to follow that with "Kentucky Woman."
Live version on Made in Japan is awesome
It's not on Made in Japan.
@@robertsaul234 Really?, well I stand corrected
My woman From Thailand 🇹🇭 ❤️. We used translation in smartphone to talk at first. We been married 12 years now
Wow. Forgot about this classic. Deep Purple one great band, with a lot of different hits. You guys are great.
Great reaction. Big Hugs from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
OHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHH!!!😊ANOTHER CLASSIC PURPLE HIT YOU GUYS! 😊
You have to check out perfect strangers it's a cool song. It's a song about troopers or one guy going into war and just killing in a war zone.
What is so cool about that?
@@torbjrnlund903 the song was about a killer the Globalist who send people into war because the Government said let's do this. It's a song I didn't write it but this a good song. How many thugs have killed people for whatever no reason? That is a perfect stranger. Do you understand now?
@@torbjrnlund903 get over it you must have went to college for 7 years and don't have anything better to do then cry about words not life words from a song chech yourself and understand it's freedom of speech. You didn't learn that in college did you?
@@torbjrnlund903 what do you think happens in a war zone you are not friends you are in a war zone you have to kill or you will be the dead guy understand now?
@@torbjrnlund903 do you know how many black people kill black people for no reason it's called a perfect stranger but you are a cry baby and didn't make it off the front door of you're house and ran with big dogs in Detroit Michigan or Flint or Sag no you point fingers and cry. I hope you can pay off you're school loans for leaning B.S. from college. Or We stand together and be friends Ok I am a nice person and you never asked me about me. You just bash me for a song that is old old and you get work up come on let it go. It's words it's a song ok got it cool.
That lyric video cracks me up as nearly all the women in it are Korean K-Pop idols, NOT women from Tokyo, but he has good taste at least. The song is an all time fave rocker for sure.
The deepest Purple Demons Eye 👁 another banger from this timeless brit Band ☮️
Portraying being "ferociously in love"... well said, Brad.
You found Deep Purple 🙂🙂 = Back in the bands heyday they were VERY popular in Japan, hence I am sure that there were some Japanese girlfriends 🙃🙃😉😉😊 And the resulting song "My Woman From Tokyo" 🙂🙂 ** Have you two listened to Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" yet ???? That song is based on a true incident, so listen to the lyrics very closely 😁😁
She makes me see things. Opens my eyes. Everything.
"Burn" is a great song. Very good musicianship from every member. Frantic drumming.. the band is tight!
My second favorite Deep Purple song. I was in HS when this ode to an oriental lady came out.
OMG, we had this on 8 Track. Then I recorded it to a cassette to play in my 74 Nova. Good times music, I had this on album too. Their best # 1 rock/metal album was "Burn," from 1975. Thanks for reacting to this song!
Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide
I just realized how much the interlude sounds like The Beach Boys.
This song is from Deep Purples Who We Think We Are album, that was recorded in 1973 just prior to front man Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glovers departure from the band, and some other great tracks on it you might wanna react to that they really get down on are Rat Bat Blue,Place In Line and Smooth Dancer
Just checking in
Deep Purple were a simple, hard rocking British band that captured the American pop and rock audiences from the late 60s through the mid-70s. Woman from Tokyo was one of their last big FM hits before their popularity began to fade. Still a 70s fav of mine.
Can't believe I forgot this song! So great! My woman is from Osaka, but, close enough!
She makes him see that once you go Japanese, nothing else will ever please. 😉
Nice pick guys
Purple did a concert in Japan and wrote this very appropriate song.
Nobody does it like Brad & Lex.
Exactly why I moved to Thailand 3 years ago from Tampa.
For the Japanese girls? 🤔
I was in Japan when this song came out it was an instant hit in Japan.
I saw Deep Purple on their Machinehead album tour along with Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. Long time ago.
You could mislead this one for an early Van Halen song. But Deep Purple can take also it to a different level with the psechedelic/rockabilly influences.
How she’s so good to me, missing her he sees what she’s ment to him
Hard Rock/Blues Rock. Brad & Lex did you pickup on the piano blues riff at 5:00 and then again at 5:49 sounding more like a ragtime piano. Ragtime is similar to early blues. 🙂
Deep Purple were great in the 70s in Japan , this is only 26 years after the A Bomb was dropped on Japan ! My neighbour was at the Made in Japan concerts , he is in his late 60s and lectures in modern languages and his wife is Japanese Nice guy
spent a month in Tokyo in 2018, beautiful country and people
An early rocker from the daddys of heavy metal. Great tune. (Made in Japan version rocks!)
Great Song
This was my song about my wife from Tokyo, sadly lost her 2 years ago
I hope you will check out "Highway Star" and "Space Truckin" by Deep Purple. Two fun hard rock classics!
Songs like this are sometimes called a "Power Ballad".
I've been waiting for this one!
this is not a power ballad, what are you talking about? When A Blind Man Cries is a ballad, even Child In Time, this is a mid-tempo with a swinging groove
"He's a man, but she makes him feel like a boy." Very intuitive.
I had forgotten that song, ty
Music is great you should react to more
Now that you have had a sample of Deep Purple try Strange Kind of Woman
Live version only - Made In Japan or Live In Copenhagen.
Probably the most radio friendly track by MKll lineup. there was a edited version that's quite tragic.
A rock classic
Check out deep purple
“ you fool no one “ 😉🎸🇬🇧
Great musical selections -- and I always get a kick out of Lex's apparently infinite number of hairstyles.
Lex I think you would like the old Deep Purple song “Hush”
