Saxon are a fantastic band. I've seen them live. They were on the same bill as Motorhead - that was a great concert! Other great tracks by Saxon to check out include: Wheels of Steel, Denim and Leather, Heavy Metal Thunder, Motorcycle Man, Princess of the Night, and so many others.
Song is supposedly based on the Great NorthEast blackout in November 1965 (power outages) and they wrote it imagining being in a 747 trying to land......apparently!
Great choice, 747 and Princess of the Night and Power and the Glory are my favorites from them. NO not about drugs 747 coming from Hawaii trying to land at JFK and there was a blackout no runway landing lights and they are very low on fuel. Setting a course into the night, they are trying to find a place to land before fuel is gone, You have have to remember you cant just land a 747 at any airport
except it wasn't a 747. the song is about a power outage in 1965. the plane was probably a dc-8. 747 was still in developement and was introduced in 1969
Saxon may not have been the most successful heavy metal band in the 80's... but they absolutely turned out to be one of the most persistent and respected. Metallica were actually fans of the band in the early 80's as they were getting started and opened for Saxon in 1982 in L.A. The band was one of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Angel Witch, Venom, Raven, etc.) forming in the UK in the late 70's and debuting in 1979... it was their 2nd album 'Wheels of steel' (1980) that became a success in Europe and eventually got them to N. America w/ this single... Saxon was originally - Biff Byford (vocals), Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver (guitars), Steve Dawson (bass) and Pete Gill (drums)... After several stellar heavy metal records in the early 80's, Saxon was persuaded to make the change to be like Def Leppard and the "hair metal" scene in 1985 w/ the album "Innocence is no excuse"... then 'Rock the nations' (1986) and 'Destiny' (1988)... none of those records had a commercial impact unfortunately... Eventually, Saxon returned to their metal roots w/ 'Solid ball of rock' (1991) w/ Nibbs Carter (bass) and Nigel Glocker (drums) joining Paul Quinn & Graham Oliver (guitar) and Biff Byford (vocals)... The band persisted in the 90's and 2000's w/ Doug Scarratt (guitar) replacing Graham Oliver and Saxon has since released 20+ studio albums and still tour worldwide 🤘🤘
Lex is wrong about this :) The Great Northeast Blackout took place on November 9, 1965. Due to disastrous technical problems, electricity supplies to thousands of people in southern Ontario, Canada, and across eight north-eastern American states, were abruptly cut. Alarmingly, this included power supplies to airport runway lights, forcing countless planes to be re-routed elsewhere. The blackout lasted for 13 hours: seemingly against the odds, the crime rate reportedly dropped as a result. Less surprisingly, birth rates in the areas affected unexpectedly spiked nine months later… Fast-forward to 1979: Saxon frontman Biff Byford is watching a BBC documentary about the blackout, presented by noted science historian James Burke, and suddenly has a really cool idea for a song. Within a matter of days, Saxon had written 747 (Strangers In The Night), which would soon become one of the band’s biggest hits and greatest anthems.
I can't believe you guys reacted to this song! It's bizarre it's appeared at this time. My beloved big sister passed away from cancer in March. She was the eldest of my three sisters and me being the youngest their music tastes combined influenced me a lot growing up. She used to love Saxon in her younger days. This song was one of the first of theirs she played me as a kid and it always stuck with me through the years. Thank you guys. It's got me crying, but it's a good thing. It gives me happy memories of her x
@@NewbieInOttawa Thanks Ian. I'm ok. The cremation had it's moments. My sister with her dark sense of humour chose "This Girl Is On Fire" to be played as her coffin was heading away for cremation. She still made us laugh until the end, bless her. Even my elderly Dad who was distraught couldn't help but laugh with tears in his eyes.
It's different losing a sibling. I can't explain why. I remember losing my baby sis She was only 35 and often I wonder... what if? I had the great honor of raising her daughter, my niece. And life does go on. I promise.
Saxon were not into drugs and were not a heavy drinking band - one of the reasons they are still touring and making albums today. The singer and drummer are both in their 70s now.
Saxon was one of the original British metal bands that had a sensibility towards historical events, literature & philosophy sorta like Maiden. Their songs usually have a theme not just a "let's rock out" vibe. I was hooked on STRONG ARM OF THE LAW. Heavy Metal Thunder is top 10 metal songs of all time. It encapsulates everything that is sacred about being a metalhead & the purpose in your love of the genre. How you felt down front at a show .... the brotherhood, the sweat & the energy coursing through your veins. Try Crusader also 1984 baby!
You know your stuff...unlike the 2 clowns presenting this video, they're not worthy to listen to such a respected and influential band. Right up there with Maiden as leaders of the NWOBHM!!
Saxon were one of the best bands to come out of that whole era late 1970s-early 1980s new heavy metal wave from the UK. They never got the success as Iron Maiden or Def Leopard. But they were/are a very tight band, saw them live. They always had crunching riffs. Try out 'Strong Arm of the Law' and 'Wheels of Steel' for starters. Very catchy. I noticed you both bobbing your heads to this riff...headbangers!
The lyrics are in fact from two separate songs, randomly spliced together. The verses about the impending plane catastrophe (in turn inspired by a real life power outage and imagining its potential dire consequences), and the chorus about a random meeting at an airport that is sadly shortlived since the two are going for different destinations so nothing could never come of it. Apart from the vague aerial element, the lyrics had nothing whatsoever uniting them - but bizarrely, it worked, and the song remains one of Saxon's most popular from a brilliant, still ongoing career. Note: Randy Rhoads died in March 1982, about two years after this song was released, so there's no cconnection there.
Saxon is a NWOBHM Legend. Rainbow Theme+Frozen Rainbow,Judgmend Day,Back to the Wall,Wheel of Steel, Motorcycle Man,747 (Strangers in the Night), Strong arm of the Law,Power and the Glory,Crusader and many more good Songs. Forgotten how good a song this is 👍. Remember buying this on 12", went to see Whitesnake at Newcastle City hall, they cancelled and walking back to the train station we called in HMV.
I wore the hell out of my "Denim and Leather" and "The Power and The Glory" albums. Their best albums IMO. If you're going to look further into Saxon, then you HAVE to listen to "Denim and Leather", "Princess of the Night", The Power and The Glory", Midas Touch", "Warrior", and definitely "The Eagle has Landed".
They were great storytellers back then, not sure if they still do this, but actual events like this and Kennedy's murder, or a song about a steam train... they were masters using stories into songs.
Its actually a song about a real flight that nearly crashed because the lights were out on the runway at Kennedy Airport and he was also using it as a metaphor for one night stands.
It's about that 1965 power outage in New York. However, there wasn't any Boeing 747s in 1965. They didn't appear till about 1969/70. But it does seem scarier with a 747. They're big.
Hi Team saw Saxon @ Castle Donington / English Midlandsearly '80s @ a large Rock Festival numerous acts on then inc Scorpions , Rainbow = do try their track Stargazer with Dio as their lead vocalist Enjoy
Dude..... it's really about being on a 747, low fuel, no ground lights, no radio.... a truly horrifying prospect. He's right. Girl, sounds like you're the one who's high. lol. Next Saxon to check out needs to be Power & the Glory, Crusader, and Midnight Rider.
You should try Crusader that's a great album and I want to thank you guys for doing my favorite Saxon tune 747 strangers in the night is incredible they smoke that song live
I've not paid much attention to Saxon but it sounded better than 90% of the hair metal junk of the eighties. I just checked though and they started in 75.
I hope you do a reaction to Saxon's "Dallas 1 PM". Lyrics are about the JFK assassination. I was in a band in Germany made up of Americans stationed there, and we used to cover it.
I think Lex is having a touch of "Baby Brain" it's absolutely about an aircraft (747 Jumbo Jet) trying to land only to find there had been a power outage so no landing lights, low on fuel they needed to find another airport capable of handling a big aircraft like a 747
Lex almost ruins their reactions with the ridiculous things she says. The song is about strangers passing each other by at airports etc and moving on with their lives, one stands and stuff and moving on, etc.

It was a real blackout in New York City.
Yes, it was a trip, it was a scary event.
No landing lights.
@Doctor Richard Day 1969
I didn't read about it, I was on the bus when everything went dark.

Saxon is an AWESOME Band!!!!!!!!!
Princess Of The Night!
No, no drugs just planes
Love Saxon. Especially Dallas 1pm or crusaders ❤
🤘
Crusader is the best Saxon song IMO.
There's f-all reactions to Dallas 1PM! - In my opinion it's their best track. Absolute demon of a solo!

Dallas 1pm - about JFK assassination and Princess of the Night about a Steam Train are excellent songs by these Yorkshire tykes!

Great Band ! Check out... Denim and Leather... wheels of Steel, Motorcycle Man. Love listening to these guys when I'm on my Harley
Love this song
This is my most favorite song. I saw them live a couple of times but unfortunately they never played this song live at all.
So cool Saxon! Saw these guys I'm '83 with Iron Maiden! Again in 2017 with Judas Priest. They still as hard rockin and tight as 33 years earlier🤟🤟
Check out "Ride Like the Wind" also.
\m/ yes!!!!!
Crusader
Princess of the night
Just let me rock
Denim and leather
Broken hero's
Dallas 1 pm
This song has nothing to do with drugs
80's heavy metal, how about Krokus?
IIRC they reacted to Screaming in the Night.
You're wrong on this one Lex. Saxon aren't a trippy kind of band. Try their song "Dallas 1pm" and you'll see.
Saxon ROCKS!
What a song. Great lyrics. Classic Saxon were excellent.
I still have all their vinyl up till 1990.
WOW!! A Saxon selection!! Nice one!!
Should have done Dallas 1PM

A band from my home town. Biff, the vocalist grew up over the road from my gran.
oooh you gotta do crusader by saxon amazing song
Dallas 1pm next
Their music today is as good or better than it was in the 80s. One of the most awesome underrated metal bands.

The live version of this is even better! (edit: 1999 version)
I saw Saxon open for Iron Maiden on Maiden’s Powerslave tour in 86 or 87. Good live band part of the old-school British invasion of heavy metal
Together with Judas Priest, Tigers of PanTang, Def Leppard and Iron Maiden. Saxon far out the best of them all.😉
Its called puddelrock in Denmark.
They were trippin….😂

Have you done Y&T?
Hey guys sorry ive missed out ..but love yall congrats all that cheesy stuff
Check out the song battering ram by Saxon, it's awesome
Reminds me a bit of Slade's Wheels Ain't Coming Down, plotwise.
Probably every touring band has a story like this.
great song

LOL...this song has nothing to do with drugs.
Not a bad tune to try out, but if you're a virgin to the ways of Saxon, start with "Wheels of Steel" ;)
Good God, that was crazy bad. No offense to Jim Generic and the Mediocres.
True story about plane crash
I think Lex is having a touch of "Baby Brain" it's absolutely about an aircraft (747 Jumbo Jet) trying to land only to find there had been a power outage so no landing lights, low on fuel they needed to find another airport capable of handling a big aircraft like a 747
For God’s sake get your ground lights on!
The main riff is really good, but the slow chorus parts and the lyrics kinda suck.
They are great storytellers in their songs. Don’t bother reviewing The Eagle Has Landed or Dallas 1PM.
Nothing to do with drugs
I think the figurative interpretation is a bit of a stretch Lex. This is one where I think Brad's literal sense finds its place.
Simply a flight accident!
i thought it was then usa lost power in 1965ish, so planes flying in couldnt see any thing, nothign to do wiht drugs at all
