  • We are wrapping our IBC tote for our rainwater harvesting system. This is stop any algae forming from the sunlight / UV getting into the water. Simple garden polythene from the local DIY store and duct tape.
    Also a cheap inlet filter made in just a few minutes from a €6 pool filter.
    Ian & Julie are building their tiny homestead and soon to be starting the biggest project of their lives - a Passive House Container Home which will be totally off grid.

    It's so nice to see a project I want to do before I stumble through it myself. I like your DIY strainer! I didn't know why I needed to wrap my container either. I have a container already and will be working on this project soon. Thanks!

      If you can find a black container they are much better and saves the wrapping. But you can buy covers too

      Thank you - we have done the same on our new off grid plot too where we are building. Also put in a 4100litre underground tank so we have plenty of water now 😀

    I’m getting everything to do a system like this. My question so far, would a good quality flat black paint work instead of wrapping them? Thanks for your videos.

      I think the paint would peel after a while with the heat of the sun and the expanding of the IBC. They do make black IBC units and I am on the hunt for some locally. You can also get pre made covers for them to save wrapping them. Thanks for watching

    If I have black and white poly wrap, would it make sense to put the white side facing the sun and black inside?

    Are you doing anything to keep groundhogs or other animals from living or digging under the tote? If so, how? How hot will the water get in the covered totes? Will you mitigate that somehow before watering?

      Hi Tony - we don't really get small animals like that - of course we have Mols but they stay to open fields. The totes do not get that warm at all. Only in the black pipe but once it is flushed through it is cool again.

    Hello, do you think koi pond liner might last longer since it’s thicker?

      It could be but what we have found the tape is the issue. We have started using purpose made covers from Amazon. €20 and they work great. Cheaper than the plastic.

    Hello, can you tell me what size tarpaulin you used to wrap the tank. Thank you.

      I am sure it was 3.5m x 4m. It was a standard size off the role at the local builders merchants. I bought 7m for 2 units and the plastic was folded in half.

    How do you deal with water freezing in winter?

    • @HomesteadingUncontained
      @HomesteadingUncontained  10 місяців тому

      We get a small crust of ice but mainly it is the plumbing - so I do disconnect the pump in winter and replace with a straight thru pipe.
