Good video showing the difference in the valves. I saw the comments correcting you about pressure vs volume. I just want to add a bit more info for others that might be installing elbows in the line before the hose connection.
As said, for maximum water volume you want to use a full port valve, but any elbows or tees in the line will add head pressure, which reduces volume and GPM. A way around this is to use a larger diameter ball valve with larger elbows/tees.
For example, start with a 1" ball valve, then 1" hose to 1" elbows/tees. Then neck it down to 3/4" to attach the hose.
Also, using a "sweep" elbow instead of a 90 degree elbow will reduce the volume loss caused by the fitting, so best to use them if available. Another option is to use two 45 degree elbows spaced apart instead a 90 degree elbow.
If using several elbows before necking it down, probably better to use 1 1/2" instead of 1".
If you're going to use a lot of fittings, there are charts online that'll tell you the head pressure loss on any size and type of fitting. You can do the math before you even start to determine what size to use to make up for the fittings that rob volume.
In the end, you want the same volume/GPM flow with the fittings as you would if you just had a straight 3/4" hose with no fittings.
Excellent examples. Thank you very much.
I cut a hole in the top of the tote and dropped in a 1/4 hp sump pump. Using half inch hose now but in the past used 3/4 garden hose. Flow with the large hose was phenomenal, still very good with smaller hose. Watch you don't drain the tank thru a siphon when the pump is off. Grace
Looks like Eastern/South Eastern Oklahoma. Beautiful country, great people. Ends video with God Bless..proving my point.
Full topic coverage. Good video.
I love the informative videos you make. Lots of great info. Thank you and God bless

Hey guys bobbijo here. Absolutely love your content. Your showing things other UA-camrs don't.
Glad you are enjoying our channel! 👍😀
Awesome. Thank you. Really helpful.
Another great vedio, with logic and reasoning to back up your evaluation. Your perfect. Love the bloopers. They show your a perfectionist. Which is a good attribute. 👏 G-D Bless.
Thank you Angel's arrived really appreciate the support.
Excellent. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience, the second valve set up is best always is best to have redundancy.
Thank you wall street homestead glad you enjoyed the video.
Very informative video. I enjoyed listening to pretty songbird in the background, reminds me of spring.😁
Mary Hansen thank you! And yes, spring is just around the corner! Can’t wait! 😊
Thank you for information 👍
There is a frictional reduction with the downward facing spout. The water at it's initial velocity is slowed when hitting the curve of the spout.
The bigger the whole means more volume not pressure. Higher the tote sets means more pressure. Every 2.31 feet of height equals 1 psi
another great content vid kids....you have one of the great channels I follow and recommend to others
Rick Martin thank you so much! Means a lot to us! 😀👍
Awesome show how 😄
Have a good evening ☃️☃️☃️
Thank you! 😊
👍👍. Dang you’re a straight up guy AND then the Bloopers 😅😂🤣😂. Got to love that laugh and smile. Very good video and definitely well thought out solutions. My gramps drilled into me when ya change the clocks ya put in new batteries AND lubricate all valves with 3and1 oil. In Fall wrap exposed pipes and leave extra to wrap valves just in case of freezing temps. And ONLY because ya may get too busy with holidays and other things and forget. Ounce of prevention adds life to all your hard work. Been here 30 some years and one by one PVC pipes underground have now cracked and it’s been a mess outside. Total excavation and finding more tiny leaks way below freezing line. Now just found a leak under foundation of house. They have improved PVC so much since back then but now water is so costly. Any improvements means gray water for outside and non consumable and another line for inside. And we’ve got the same setup for each faucet. All very costly so any water saving ya can do really helps.....if we can get some rain. Been under drought rules for 5 years. So been wondering about your water.....a well or piped in?? Had a small well on my farm in back then had to buy shares for front land and house or it was a dance in shower to get clean. All your knowledge is Golden lessons for newbies. But as always maybe it works and maybe it won’t BUT always be willing to learn. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you God Bless
Thanks for the information tip!
John Reinburg thanks for watching! 👍😀
❤👍Good video!
Thanks for your video. You guys are such great teachers! I live in town but now I'm retired I want to do some gardening which includes rain catchment. I know I am not farmers like you but I think it's inspiring for a system that will work for me. Just have to wait out the subzero temperature and snow here in Iowa. 😅👵
Vicki Raab thank you, and yes, I wouldn’t recommend using this system during the coldest months for sure.
Oh your so right on the plastic Tote shut off valves. They snap off after a few months. Thankfully, only 1 did so in the off position & we were able to open it with tools. I can't remember the exact math but something like 10 PSI for every foot of drop. That is not very much so it really needs height and the force of a narrow channel to go very far. Good Information again! Loved it!
Awesome video guys, thankyou...
Thanks! 👍
Excellent video. Thx for the tips.
Wish you had described the thread difference between the pieces more, tho.
Keep up the great info. 👍🙏👏
When selecting those ball valves, look for what is called a 'full port' one.
Almost zero restriction.
Thanks,,.
Y tested and work.
After replaced my old regular garden hose connection, and put together with the new Handel Valve y have more pressure and more GALLONS PER MINUTE.
Thank you so much
You all are doing a great job. I have a 4000 gal rain catchment system, I use it on my garden and chickens. God Bless
Good information. I use Teflon tape for plumbing threads indoors, but I never thought of using it outdoors. Also never thought about whether I use it clockwise or not.
Thanks! I’m glad we could help ya out! 😀👍
Thank you! Ball valve all the way
cool video! nice system
Thank you! 😀
You have pressure and VOLUME mixed up. If yer totes are 250 gallons, then the pressure will be the same in both tanks. Volume depends on the size of fittings you use. BUT, I love the vids, you two are great.
Thank you! 👍😄
“I was getting there.” Bahaha 🤣
Good job, Jacob! I thought you did very well at giving a complete explanation as to what you’re doing and why.
I can see I’ll have to get creative in raising one enough that it’s higher than the raised beds. But, I think I’ll come up with some idea.
Yes paula you got to get creative sometimes, think outside the box lol. Hope yours does well. Thank you for the support.
Sawyer Ridge Farm - I hope so too. Won’t know for awhile but I’m learning from y’all in the meantime. 😉
@@PaullaWells that's the best thing do do learn and do it the right way once.
@@SawyerRidgeFarm - I agree! And I am old enough that you could say old dogs do learn new tricks. 🤣
Great idea! Thanks for broadcast! I'm in NY it's against the law to collect rain water but you never know what tomorrow will bring maybe a move to a different state! God bless you and yours!❤️🤗
Kathy that blows my mind that its illegal in some states to collect rain water. I think that's ridiculous.
@@SawyerRidgeFarm Me too! Good ole NY! Now as of the 1st plastic bags need to go away too!
Collecting rainwater in IS legal and encouraged in New York.
Thanks
I have seem the totes here on YouTub. I was wondering how useful they would be for garden watering. You have not only given full instructions to adapt for hoses and cut offs, but have made it possible for me to think it would be very good for gardens as well. Thank you. God Bless
Virginia Reid we’re glad we could help you out! Thanks so much for watching! 👍😊
Sawyer Ridge Farm, I'm certain you have helped so many others as well.
I hope y'all having very special Valentine today
Thank you! 😀
Great video! I hate hose bibs, much prefer a ball valve! Thanks for sharing!👍👍
James Curry Designs and Boatworks thanks for watching! 👍
Sawyer Ridge Farm you bet! You two are killin’ it! Keep’em comin’, God Bless!
Great video y’all. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I am planning on adding some totes soon, do you have any issues with them freezing in the winter?
Gary Walker Farm Fam thank you! And honestly, we don’t use them in the coldest months. But we filled this one in the video a week or so ago and we’ve had some cold nights and it’s still going strong. I don’t think I’d risk it during the coldest months though. The valves on the totes themselves are plastic and things could possibly bust.
Other homesteaders cant remember their name off hand use insulatation cover little. Woodhouses pallet wood to protect plastic containers making them last longer & prevent damages..
We are using a 325 gallon water tank, we don't have a spring on the property so we will have to bring the water in.
Now I just need a tote!
Lol. 😄
I think I found it! :)
At 19:00 that is called a close quarter nipple. Only saying this for those that might be going shopping for parts. The glue only needs a few minutes to set.
This is a nice set up, would be great for drip tape/or pipe irrigation. If your not watering animals from it you can directly add fertilizer in it.
Squirrel hill farm we have been thinking of doing irrigation. I think that would help alot
Yellow handle ball valves are for gas. They cost a little extra. Usually the red handle R for water
That is good to know. Thanks for the insight! 👍😀
Grooves, most of us calls them threads, or do you mean the camlock groove?
Thank you for the informative video! Do you have a link to the full port ball valve that you used? Cheers!
Have you ever removed the plastic valves from the Totes, and put in threaded pvc pipes or galvanized nipples going into a PVC pipe manifold, then PVC ball valves and your NPT / garden hose coupling to feed the hose? Nice video, my totes are full, and I may try and do this when I empty one of them. Thanks!
Hi is there a particular ball valve that I need for the same set up?
Very Very helpful in determining mine. I just bartered with someone for a couple tanks with the exact same novels. Do you find it absolutely necessary to cover them in black for only garden watering?
I would cover them keeps them clean. If you ever needed to use the water for animals emergency etc it would be clean and no worries.
🙏🏻
Thank you so much for this detail presentation. I would appreciate if you kindly name theses individual part's name. I have chucked with the local home depot, Rona and Lowes and everyone in these customers support team told that I have to buy from online and not be able to get from them! If I get these items name it will be great help. Thank you so much once again.
There is fine thread (NPT) and course thread, so be aware. Unfortunately, mine is course thread and roughly 3.75 inches, so a rubber Fernco fitting for 3" wont fit and 4" is too big. I've tried to buy the correct fitting online and having difficulty finding one. rural king, tractor supply, lowes, home depot do not carry fittings for IBC totes. Online favors the 2" variety.
I have 3 of these IBC containers that I am going to set up in the spring. I have figured out not to use the collapsible hoses for these. There is not enough water that comes out of those, use rubber hoses instead.
Yes 44 warlord that is true bigger diameter the better.
What was size off ball valve. Tku
you have to drain them in cold weather ?
But I do like the way you say it
Thanks for the info,,,we are looking for these ibc totes but the question is do you use the ones that had chemicals in them and then cleaned? All of the totes we have come across have had something other than water,,
These were used for peanut oil, so they are food grade.
Hello! What size is the piece that you screwed into the tank? What's it called?
Are the black covers for your totes just to keep the light out, or are they insulated heated blankets for winter?
To keep the light out in the summer to prevent algae.
Loving it two youngins- these big water tanks- Can they draw creek water with a RAM PUMP?
Yes, they probably would! 👍
And if you use apex material it flexes with the temps...costs a bit more but lasts way longer than the PVC...my sons are plumbers and sing the praises..
Mate! The Teflon tape is not there to stop leaks! And it doesn't "dry". It's dry by default.
The tape is lubricant. It lubricates the thread to permit full mechanical tightening. The tightening grinds the tape which then becomes a plastic state and lubes the threads as rotation is applied. Best in a single rotation to fully tight. No stopping.
Back in the day they used good old oily Hemp twine to give the same thread lube to achieve full mechanical tightening.
Also, putting your grips direct into the thread is a guaranteed leak. It will leak after grips have crushed the thread surfaces. When the primary thread on a double ended pipe cannot be tightened further, use the secondary fitting, ie the next valve to tighten both threads fully.
Best wishes.
Thanks for that tip! 👍
Also it stops leaks.
Great info! Have you shared this with Jason?
Marsha Shelton we will, he watches our channel also.
👍♥️👀
Groves? Are you referring to pipe threads?
Yes, couldn’t think of it in the moment.
We spent the money on the ball valve, it's worth it.
Mustang Sally for sure! 👍
I’ve got one of them totes in the yard that didn’t come with a valve on it and the threads are a wonky size
rdnkrfnk use a Fernco coupling. You will need one that is shielded so it’s rigid.
DRIECUT thanks imma try it
Great information but need to add one more step need to paint the p vc UV light will degrade the plastic
Thank you for that tip! 👍
Same pressure- more volume
And the ball valve cut off is faster than the traditional twist spigot
Yes, another great feature! 👍
😂 he gets so frustrated when the words don't come out of his mouth in order. 😉 Well done to both of you. Did you gag the roosters? Didn't hear them at all 🤗
Marie I seem to do that often lol.

The part with the hoses and water pressure made me wanna go pee
If I used a pump for the gravity fed water system for my off-the-grid cabin, would I still have to have it raised? My husband and I were working on this cabin and he died on April 5th, now I have to try to finish it to sell because without him being here....I don't want it. But I have to learn how to do this to get water into the cabin. This is our youtube video that I put up. ua-cam.com/video/doFMnoeHxd4/v-deo.html
No you don't need a raised tank if you use a pump. Depending on the pump of course.
@@billabney243 Thank you for getting back to me. Do you have a suggestion for the type of pump to get for the water tank?
I think they are called threads lol
Yes, he couldn’t think of the word. Lol
