Today, we will take a look at one of the saddest stories in goldeneye speedrunning history. A story of one of the best players to play the game, who eventually fell to the dark side and faked many runs, eventually leading to his removal from the ranks. Thousands of hours sunk into the game by an extremely talented player, wiped from the history books completely.
I'm excited to make a lot more vids, I've been working hard on making my recording set up a lot better and it shows on this video. As always let me know if you have any feedback! - Ігри

Oh, OK, I faked that one, but I didn't fake anything else.
Oh, alright, I faked 6 other runs. But everything else is legit.
Ah whatever, I faked the others too, but I certainly didn't fake this one.
Oh fine, I faked that one too...but I'm not a cheat.
There could also be some more fakes but everything else is legit.

I am just in awe at how everyone was sucking this guy’s dick. In other games, when a player is caught cheating they are almost banned for life but not this idiot for some reason. The people in charge of moderating things at that time were not absolute legends at all.

He took a shortcut and gained nothing.
He experienced a hollow victory.
Nothing was risked and nothing was gained.
It's sad that he didn't know the difference.
Essentially what Kristoph Gavin was in the Ace Attorney series. He fooled everyone, and himself (in a way), and faced the consequences for it.

GameShark; the performance-enhancing drug for speedrunners.
Nah that's ritalin.
No, if u want something weak drink like 4 redbulls
EveryTimeV2 I’m guessing you’re actually allowed to take Ritalin for speedruns, though?
I used to play Guitar Hero competitively (I wasn’t actually very good, but I’d record my scores, etc.), and I also used to use drugs, and felt that taking certain drugs actually made me a better player, but I wouldn’t count scores when using them, since I felt like it was cheating to me.
I mean doping is not allowed in sports so I assume it also shouldn't be allowed in speedruns.

I am not part of any speed run community but I cannot understand how he wasn't removed and banned sooner. It wasn't a zero tolerance, it was like a 9 strike rule.
To put it in the simplest terms
He was removed, lost all his records, lost all respect, lost all credibility to his runs.
In other words banning the guy from the forum is no where near as harsh as what they did to him. He genuinely earned the right to be called a "cheater". If I was an admin in a community like that. I'd actually do the same and let them stay. The guy clearly was at least apologetic but only after being caught x amount of times. But not once did they show any obscene reaction from what we saw in the video. The guy was simply being a dumbass but wasn't bad enough to warrant a ban.
TheNanakisan . Sounds like he got of easy given how people were talking about him with so much admiration.
It's cos he was a cool guy : )
Reminds me of doping in cycling, especially the whole Lance Armstrong story. It was pretty obvious that he was juiced up to superhuman levels but lots of people, from his fans to the highest officials, had interest in protecting the american cancer survivor super star. There's a couple of fascinating documentaries about all that on UA-cam, well worth a watch.
Cycling also shows that a zero tolerance policy is the only way to go. No warnings, no temporary bans, nothing. Sadly they refuse to learn that lesson to this day, so the golden eye community is better than the UCI.
@@nanakimurasaki Speaking from experience, you don't want to have this kind of person around. You will never be able to trust him. "They" didn't do anything...he did it to himself.
Henning must have gotten really swole, moving the goalposts that often. "Okay i did THIS, but I didnt do THAT. Alright I did THAT, but I didn't do the OTHER thing"
And to say that, at that time, having cutscenes that actually change, depending on the player's actions, was such a novelty that many players actually finished levels multiple times : with different weapons, with different modes (such as fast or slow), with or without killing the enemies closest to the exit, with or without previously placed mines that would activate during those cinematics.
So, how the hell could he imagine that no one would notice his end cutscene would not match the way he played ?
Shocked they let him stay after he faked evidence to prove himself innocent.
Also that was a powerful outro
im shocked it took him so long to get everything removed, proven to be cheating 500 times apparently wasnt enough.
Reminds me of how a lot of people defended Obama's, "like your doctor, keep your doctor," even though it's still a lie to this day. Some people are just completely blinded by their own biases.

That last segment hit me hard.
Why?
I’m going to be completely honest:
I was technically an art thief.
I traced art and didn’t credit the original artists. Nobody seemed to notice or care, and 2 years after I had done it, I went back and confessed to tracery, showing the original artworks alongside the traced versions.
This was on an obscure app which I won’t name here, but in the community I was accepted to post in an art tag which was meant for only the best artists on there. As time went on, I felt guilt for the traceries and knew, considering how the community is, that someone would eventually go back and find the traceries.
My conscience was literally screaming at me, and finally I confessed.
People actually took it well, and they appreciated my confession. I am still allowed to post in that art tag, and now the traceries are way behind me.
Confessing before you’re even caught is the best way to go.
An Aldmeri Dominion Enforcer dude, everyone does things that they are not proud of later or don’t care about the possible consequences at the time of doing so. Nevertheless I’m happy of OPs decision to do the right thing later on and the reaction of the community shows again that an honest confession is the best thing to do most of the time. So no need to be offensive.
Yes, confessing without being put under scrutiny is a respectful deed.

He does have a very nice suit
lmao
While this was a well put argument, I have to disagree on his runs being taken down having a negative effect on other speedrunners. If he is a cheat, getting him out of the community pretty much guarantees everyone else a more legitimate chance to compete. Personally, I think his first offense warranted the removal of all his records. Once a cheater, always a cheater. If he came back and had 100% verification of his new runs maybe we can talk, but everything before the incident is instantly discredited. When this first came to light, how many people do you think quit trying saying "If he can cheat, what chance do I have? I'm not willing to cheat, so I guess I should find a new hobby." I'm not trying to be mean, but fairness is all we have in competition. Without it, there can be no winner.
I'd be real suspicious of the people not wanting all his times removed. Do the people voting on this have any times themselves they're particularly proud of?
Good ovservTion
Yup. These are people who don't value honesty, clearly.
Good call, actually. The-Elite is founded on competitiveness, the thrill of moving up the ranks as high as you can go and defending your position. You'd think it would be a black and white issue for them: that guy fakes his times, I don't fake my times, therefore his records should be all thrown in the trash and my records should move up. If they seem scared by the possibility that people caught cheating have all their times erased, something's up.
The flaws of social protection
It's cause they liked him so they didn't want to see him banned.
Some say Henning is still out there... alive in some form... drinking unicorn blood to become a legend like karl.

The message at the end about being the best you that you can be was my favorite part of this video
The ending message of this video is stated incredibly well and I hope it inspires people to have honor in their speedrunning careers as well as their lives.
Agreed
>honor
>speed running
>career
you nailed it!
this, unfortunately, is the tip of the iceberg.. cheaters gonna cheat and there's a whole lot of unchecked vids out there. I think live events is the only way. security watching the carts and consoles carefully
@@JamieTannerPresents I don't think the youtube comments is a constructive place to continue the never-ending proof standards debate, and I've spoke on this topic at great length before in other places. I do want to stress managed expectations, however. The time required to complete these achievements is beyond unreasonable to have employed, unbiased, knowledgeable security at a live event monitoring hundreds of hours of runs. A counter-point stated against simply having live streamed, or even simply video captured is for accessibility- and statements like this are often used in the claim that improving proof standards is a slippery slope.
This is why I stress honor and appreciation as deterrents and motivation for achieving goals. A strong, passionate community built on these ideals can go much farther (and grow much larger) than requiring a bunch of mostly hobbyist gamers travel across the country or world to sit in a room for days with security guards staring at them as they play a video game.
What lives? You obviously don't have one because your sat on your arse playing computer games all day.
I gotta say Karl, the speech at the end of your video had me feeling good.
I am wanting to learn speed running, especially Goldeneye and the original RE titles. My times are absolute garbage compared to even decent runners but I keep trying.
That message can go for any hobby. I'm an active fly fisherman. And I learned early I cant judge my own skill based on what I show others or how more experienced anglers see me. I make my own worth.
Thanks for the amazing videos and entertainment Karl. Keep it up
It's like in a court of law: once a witness is shown to be a liar, you have to throw out all of their testimony.
Your wrong, I played enough ace attorney to know you get them to keep testifying until it's discovered they didn't see what they saw or confess to the crime
I love how some of “the speed running community” was completely fine with someone cheating, with proof. However, if you’re a new/rising person in the ranks you are obviously faking it or cheating. It makes me sick how some of these people had no problem with Henning cheating then when someone new like Rayan starts submitting times back in the day he was vilified.
Maybe it’s just me, but from what I’ve seen the “community” seems toxic as hell. It’s almost like you have to be born into this shit to be taken seriously. It’s a joke.
Thats why "the elite" is the most pathetic group of speedrunners on the internet
Humans are idiots. They'll give someone a pass just because "he's nice and popular guys"
"community": We hate cheaters, scum, Never trust a cheater, total outright BAN!!!!!!".
"community": Ahh, yes, but, no, wait, yes, hold on, ....."
Time and time this happens in all forums. It makes me suspicious of their integrity.
Tbh the Doom community is the only one I've seen being consistent about this. They really won't take cheating from anyone.
Its like their "Integrity" disappeared from their soul

Had Henning spent just a little extra time to perfecting his runs instead of splicing, he would not only be respected, but would have kept his hard work in the history books, and would have even learned something along the way.
I still come back to this video every so often because of the speech at the end, specifically the part starting at 13:34. Speedrunning aside, this is perfect advice for anything that comes up in life, and brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for this.
Gonna necro this comment and point out how much Aerith’s Theme adds to it.
Catching a half decent cheater is alot harder then people think.
If he just posted one or two of these hed probubly never have been caught. He had what 20+ faked times scattered around and even then it took 2 years to notice them all.
This is another reason why all times must be thrown out there is no way to know for sure he did not cheat every single time.
It may very well be that hes crap at golden eye and just a good editor and cheater. And only got caught due to the combination of posting way to many cheated times and geting lazy and complacent thinking it was easy to trick people why wast so much time making the fake times so perfect when no one will notice anyway.
*thAn*
Makes you wonder how many of records are faked, or if there are any that are legit. Seems like more of a competition as to who can cheat the most without getting caught.
@@ryanwalsh5019 Patriots do the same thing , but they try to walk on the line where it's technically not in the rule, then the rule gets change and then they try something else
It’s mind blowing how light on punishment cheaters get in speed running communities. That’s why so many people cheat because the worse that can happen is a slap on the wrist. So moronic
Yeah, just a complete purge of any time pre-2015 or whatever that isn't a direct livestream, doesn't have video evidence, or isn't that demo stuff from doom.
Standard is that speedrunners have to show their rig before they start up anything and have their hands and face and the recording visible at all times. You know, just the basic measures to make sure someone's not cheating.
It's amazing how much time I spend on this channel, despite having no real interest in GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, or speedrunning in general. I just think Karl makes great, interesting content. 👍
I love the "darker side of speed running" videos. I think these are cautionary tales that need to be told.
8:40 I can't help but think "Sock accounts owned by Henning defending himself".
The MsScribe of speedrunning.
How can someone be a cool dude, if they’re being deceitful? The dude just kept on lying and cheating and admitting to it, yet people kept defending him. Is this some kind of cult of personality situation?
Plot twist: Henning Blom is still speed running under another tag.
12:29 Imagines Henning Blom praying at an altar and Ryan White falling from above with the Masamune aimed straight at Blom's heart.
One-Winged Ryan
I’d assume some of the accounts posting in his defense are him. Anyone willing to fake a world record speed run is more than capable of making a few alt accounts on a forum
Oh for sure. I would absolutely believe that. Sure I've seen where some people have 'sleeper' alt accounts where they just pepper the Post history a bit and then all of a sudden these unknown accounts with a handful of random posts burst to life and start defending the person.
Aerith's Theme accompanied by the statement at the end was amazingly done!

The end speech goes well beyond the realm of speedrunning. It is admirable and I commend you for it
Henning Blom: I swear I didn't fake any other times.
Ryan White: I'm about to end this man's whole career.
I have to always think of clue because of the names
Funny cause Ryan got caught doing the same shit.
@@brianjensen5661 I'd like to read more about this
As Ryan put it himself: "It takes one to catch one".
@@brianjensen5661 Yes, both Ryan and Henning cheated runs on a frigate.
The thing is, Ryan stopped cheating after he first got caught, and took it upon himself to write a new proof policy. He moved on and wanted GE leaderboards to be taken seriously. So after some reunion with other runners, they declared a new zero-tolerance proof policy.
The thing about Henning is he never stopped lying no matter how many times he got caught. Heck, I dare say his BEHAVIOR was worse than his cheating.
The best way I can put it is Henning didn't just cheat the game, he cheated his own fans. I'd argue he's more comparable to a lip-sync artist than a traditional cheater.

Damn bro made me tear up a lil at the end. Keep being awesome Karl
13:29 - Man, that outro hit way harder than I imagined anything could to me right now... I'm extremely competitive by nature and my 2021 New Year's resolution is going to be that I will stop getting so frustrated and angry with myself, when I lose at video games, or feel like I underperform. I'm way too hard on myself because I always feel like I could have done better to the point where certain things stop becoming fun. The fact that I could sit down with myself and logically come to that conclusion, then the next completely random UA-cam video directly addresses everything I just thought about, is kind of ominous with the timing... You saying those kind words at the end, directly addressing what I was feeling, makes me feel better about my performances and validates me. I can't compare myself to other people.
Keep up the good stuff brother. I hope you can help others out too.
Those "people" defending him were probably just him on fake accounts.

To this day, Hennings is still confessing.
How you win is just as important as winning. That's the lesson. This is the consequence.
