Apple just announced new iPad's! I discuss whether these iPads are worth it for artists here: ua-cam.com/video/alVG4zmLPWE/v-deo.html
I’m waiting for someone to randomly hand me an iPad on the street 😭😭
omg, me too!! i have even done some research on how to get a free one!!
same lol
Fully spec’d out m4 pls 😭
@@helenclarke9814 same lol but I just end up saved up for like 3 years and I finally got it but that is before I knew about drawing tablet , now when I got myself a Parblo tablet i dont use ipad anymore 😂😂😂😂
Me to
This video deduced for me in 15 minutes information I spent over 5 hours trying to piece together unsuccessfully. Im giving you an award for this thank you Miss
Ive been looking for this exact video. So many people explain the specs of the iPad but not in the way I need as a digital artist. So thank you for this it was very informative
I think i waited a whole year for this review, absolutely love the way you explain things like i actually understood everything and you simplified a lot of it without losing any valuable information. Thankyou for these!!!
This is the video i was looking for. I almost teared up when you just went to all the points i wanted to know in the beginning. I've been thinking of getting an Ipad but knew how the details were tricky and with apple you'll pay a lot either way. So thanks a ton for this video
Got more confused after watching this 😂
Of course not because of you, you actually have done pretty good job explaining all the information about the Ipads, but because of Apple. It seems that they do complicate things on purpose.
Other tablets brands are on their way to take on Apple in the creative field, and when that get done, sure it will be less confusing
So budget wise, I'm going with the Air 5
Same 😂
It’s the best I recommend it😊
Well … the shortcomings of iPad Air 5 really is the promotion and I think most artists since dealing with canvass sizes I think it still better to go the Pro models !!!.
Still the best iPad breakdowns around! Love your presentation style and all your work showing how many layers each model can handle. Extremely helpful 🙌🏼
True i want to change my ipad 9th gen ..to a Samsung s9 ultra or ipad pro 12.9 ...
Apple is really money hungry. Why don't they just let you insert SD cards to store your files like Samsung's tablets? The only reason people use the iPad is because of procreate and the apple pencil. They say it's the best stylus and it feels the best. Samsung is getting up there but Apple's still feels better. And it's kind of ridiculous that procreate limits how many layers you can have. That's stupid
Procreate limits the amount of layers because it takes a toll on the memory of your device hence avoiding performance issues. The amount of layers also depend on the resolution of your canvas. The higher the resolution the less amount of layers you can use and vice versa. They wanted to create an application for artists that runs as smoothly as possible. Taking a bit of my layer count is completely fine. So stupid? I think not.
@@dario8952 actually I think it is pretty stupid because every other art application on iPad runs super smooth and they don't limit your layers. I think that's just a problem with procreate using up too much resources if the other are applications can make it work, I can't they.
@@williammclean6594they might fix that with the update that should be tomorrow coming with procreate dreams also since they said that now a resolution of 1million by 1 million pixels should work now, I assume that should fix the layer issue at least a tiny bit
edit: I saw the official procreate account say that all the procreate dreams quality of life features like the new file format and max size etc would be added to procreate
@@kerri6011 nice that's good.
Procreate don't limit your layers, your ipad does. 1tb plenty of layers
Thank you!
I was looking for an upgrade but found researching Ipad versions so confusing and this breaks it down nicely
hey Brooke it's Edward here from Budapest, Hungary (the heart of Europe) and there are no words how I am amazed about this video 🤩 oh girl you really did so much work in this video, this is the best summary about iPads! Many people do not take into consideration the number of layers and they realize only later on that it would be not enough for them. Just a minor thing which I may not heard, maybe you did mention idk but only the PRO models have screen with 120Hz and each and every other has only 60Hz screen which results in a small, minor delay. Some may not notice this lag, many people dont care about this, but imo it is worth to mention.
Anyway a HUGE and massive THANK YOU for your video... LIKED and SUBSCRIBED 🥰☺
Wish you all my best and greetings from Budapest
Edward
6:51 The M1 and M2 iPad Pro models with over 1TB storage also have double the memory: 16GB instead of 8GB. Memory size is most probably the main reason why Procreate can handle more layers: they fit in the larger memory.
My point is that what we really want is more memory. Brooke’s graphic made it much easier to identify the models that have more memory, because memory (= RAM) size is not advertised for iPads, only storage size is. When I checked the memory sizes in the tech specs against Brooke’s graphic, I found that the number of layers supported in Procreate correlated strongly with memory size.
Edit: added the “M1 and M2 iPad Pro” qualifier. See my reply below for more information. (It contains links, so I don’t know if it will eventually be cleared and actually appear there.)
Edit 2: clarified that the point of my comment is to point out that the number of layers available in Procreate is really dependent on the memory size of the iPad.
Are you 100% sure about that? I'm in the market for a 12.9 and i saw those refurbished 12.9 gen 3's with a TB's worth of storage. if i can get something that dose pretty much everything the latest models do for a couple of grand less then i'll be really happy.
@@user-xr6jy7hn2k I am sorry, I overlooked the older 1 TB iPad Pros. The iPad Pro 11” 1st & 2nd gen and the iPad Pro 12.9” 3rd gen & 4th gen have models with 1 TB storage, and those only have 6 GB memory. (In the case of the Pro 11” 1st gen or the Pro 12.9” 3rd gen, this is more than the 4 GB memory for the models with less than 1 TB storage.)
So, you get the benefit of larger memory and therefore more layers in Procreate in the Pro 12.9” 3rd gen 1 TB when compared to the Pro 12.9” 3rd gen with less than 1 TB, as Brooke showed in her graphic. It is just not as much memory as for the M1 and M2 iPad Pros with 1 TB storage or more (16 GB), and Procreate can handle even more layers in the M1 / M2 iPad Pros with 1TB & 2TB storage - just like Brooke shows in her graphic.
The point of my comment was to explain why the storage size would in some cases make a difference for the limit of layers that Procreate can handle. Storage should not have an influence on the layer limit. And it doesn’t. The real reason why it seems to make a difference is because most of the models with 1 TB or more also have more memory, and that is what really determines the number of layers available in Procreate. I am pointing out a technicality.
Anyhow, I hope this clears things up.

Thank you so much for this breakdown! I did a little bit of research before I settled for the iPad Air 5th gen. I am looking to upgrade and found this video helpful
Same :)
@aquamel @mysterionz I'm just wondering if any of you have had any issues in procreate? Sometimes certain tools don't want to work for me :/ I restart it but doesn't help. That's why I'm looking to get a new ipad
What a great sequel to your 2023 vid, gonna keep these thoughts in mind!
I would have been so lost without your breakdown and guidance. I appreciate your expertise and guidance so much
This video absolutely saved me!! I’m an artist who is trying to pursue professional illustration and hobby animation and my gf and I were looking for iPads to make it easier on me (working on pc with a drawing tablet doubles my work time due to the program I use). We were ready to go with a gen 9, but after this video, I was able to find a great condition refurbished iPad Pro which suits all my needs in layers, tracks and storage! (I use LOTS of layers so the gen 9 would DEFINITELY not cut it). Thank you so much for the useful video!!!
Very very very insightful for someone who doesn’t have a clue until this video. Thanks for all the charts and details you shared in this video. Golden 🙏🏾
This is the most comprehensive review ever- thank you so much, helped me a lot! ❤
Actually, apple pencil hover is the most important feature if you're a digital painter. If you can't see your brush size before you start painting, you waste a lot of time because you have to keep changing up the brush size constantly when you're painting
Waait, how do you activate that? I got an ipad recently and have been missing this
@@zorinb3403 It only comes with like the pro M2. If you got the M1 it won't work
@@williammclean6594 ah, i have the ipad 9 lol. Thanks!
@@williammclean6594It does on my air 5. An M1.
Your video was really helpful so thank you so much much for sharing the video as I have just got my first ever iPad Air 5 gen and I love it
Really appreciate the researching into the graphics, very thorough
Thanks for the PSA I am glad you are putting this info out there, people NEED to know this stuff
Thank you for blessing us with this amazing breakdown! I have spent so much time looking for information about ipads and this video save my year!!!
Awesome video, Brooke, I am looking to get an iPad Pro on Black Friday so great timing and advice.
Thank you so much for your comparative videos. I have seen a few and yours are the most clear and valuable. I have bought a reconditionned Ipad pro 11 with 128gb thanks to your help. I will looking to your other video as soon as I can draw on procreate.
I just got an air 5. Its my first ipad. So excited to start digital art :)
I’m considering that one later on, since I just bought a gen 9 and want to start with this first, so pls lmk if it’s nice and worth it !!
@@theoneandonii will do! :)
Hi there! How do you like it?
is it worth it?
Thanks for this Brooke! My husband is all about buying the latest and greatest from Apple no matter what, and the info. about the new USB-C Apple Pencil is so helpful. Also, I'm going to see what generation I have for my iPad Pro and look up more about this Procreate 'Dreams' you talk about. Exciting stuff for creators in the works!
Great video! VERY professional and very informative!!! Thank you!!!!!
Thank you for a very informative video, just what I was looking for! I have been taking your classes on skillshare and they are amazing!
Excellent job of explaining the differences! Thanks
Really helpful. The visual tables and how you went through everything was just awesome. Got more in this video than multiple other creator videos combined. Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks very much for this useful information and the charts you made!
Very useful informations, thank you for honesty and clarity🥰
that's so helpful I was planning on getting air5 now I am sure I want it
Last year you helped me so much with this video! Thank you so much! I was able to buy my first ipad - used but in a very good condition and i take all your advices!
So well explained. Thanks for the information 👍 it's easy for me take a decision.
This has to be the most helpful video for ipads ever! I hope you redo this video in the future with the new ipads that came out today.
this video is insanely valuable thank you!
Wow this is so detailed. Just wanted to thank you!
Thank you for the in-depth info!
This was SO helpful, thank you!
Thank you so much!!! You’re a lifesaver 😭
Excellent comparison presentation! Thank you!
THIS VIDEO IS AWSOME!! SO MUCH USEFUL INFORMATION!
Thanks so much for this.
Im still using ipad pro 12.9 first gen, hope procreate dream no lag on this old model, thanks for your video, really helpful.
Good video, but you should be more clear that the layer limit is very much RAM dependent. The 1TB iPads with the M chips come with 16gb of RAM. If you already on the verge of buying the 512gb model I strongly recommend the upgrade to the 1tb, as at those prices the extra ram is quite the value.
When you working on pages of work, I still hit the layer limit. So the ram does come in handy. I’m hoping the M3 iPads will get 24gb of RAM options next year. For 2D work especially animation the RAM seems to be the bottleneck at the moment. Especially if you aren’t using effects just volume of drawings.
ur english is sooo good and easy to understand
i really love it
thanks for the video 🙏🙏
BAM! 🤯 Damn! That's was the most comprehensive iPad artist buying guide EVER! Insanely well made! 👏 Thanks for making my choice waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier 😄
Great video! This is just what I needed to know!
This is incredibly useful! Thank you!
Thanks! This is a very well made video and it’s exactly what I needed, I’ve been considering an upgrade from my 36gb Ipad mini 7th gen and I want to use procreate dreams!
This was sooo helpful. Thankyou.
thank you for the information! very valuable
Thanks so much Brooke! This is really helpful information that you’ve explained very well. I have the 2018 12.9” iPad Pro that I love to draw on, but as you’ve mentioned, not very practical to carry around. I have the iPad Air 4 as well which is great, but I want something a bit smaller like the iPad mini to carry around. With this information I feel more confident about buying an iPad mini 6. ✍️🎨
So the iPad Air 4 is right in-between too big and too small? That’s what I need, not too big to end up being neglected and not too small so I won’t notice if I lose it! I have a ADHD toddler so I gotta grab and go most days lol
Thank you! This video is very informative.
Your video is everything I needed! You mixed both worlds for me, I’ve been trying to see wether I should upgrade my I paid air 4, for about a year now, don’t like making rash decisions for big fancy tech. Your explanation is just perfect. Thanks a million!
I just tried that 16 x 16 on my old iPad Pro 2018 and it gave me 77 layers - can’t wait to get the new one and see if it’s the same amount. Thanks for all the great info!
This video is making me feel real good about the Air 5 I totally bought on a whim for casual drawing 🎉
I’m scared
I use an iPhone but I’ve always had windows for drawing and editing content
Is it good? At the end of the day lucky there’s warranty and trade options I just hate realising last minute u hate a device and the stores closed or it’s a weekend 😂
great video, i found it very helpful 👍
my goodness what a great video! I wish it existed when I got my new iPad last year lol I was upgrading from a first gen pro and it was such a pain to do all of the comparisons I didn't even know there was soooo many new ones out.... I chose the 5th gen Air and im feeling super stoked about my decision after watching this because a tiny part of me was like ugh.. are you downgrading, you should get a pro again.... anyway thank you!! I know this will help so many people!
This is GOLD!!!!
I definitely agree that the iPad Mini is really great for sketching on the go, which is mostly what I use mine for! When it comes to finished work - the screen is way too small. I love using it to get ideas out, and it's perfect for that!
I've used the 2018 base model and enjoyed that one for years, but I'd probably lean more towards an Air model if I wanted to do more finished work with Procreate. The size of the Pro is really appealing but the price is too steep.
This video put all my brains back in my head that had blown out after looking for a new ipad coming from ipad 4 mini 😅 thank you 🙏
Graciasssss you really helped!!!
I absolutely loved your video. I searched alot and no body on youtube tbh was able to help me .. but watching your video once .. made alot of sense and I took the decision of buying Ipad Air 5... I just love this piece of gadget and Thanks to you for making such informative video that I could take that jump and buy the Ipad🥰❤
Definitely getting an Air 5 now
i can't believe my old 3rd gen ipad pro 12.9 gets 200 tracks and one 4k render. So good
awesome expl. it helped me a lot!!!!thanks a lot!!!💖☺️
Nice meeting you Brooke 💚 This was an excellent and helpful overview. I was hesitant to buy, but my b-brand pen saved my life 😊Third of the price, battery indicator, longer batterylife, better grip, etc. I do not understand Apple pens, haha...
In the end, what matters is that you enjoy the drawing experience! I'm so glad you found a pen that worked for you! :)
Heyyy I got my IPad last month passed on your previous video, you are amazing thank you
thanks that the info that i need
Thank u so much! I want to get an ipad purely for art stuff (and i want become a full time illustrator one day) and looked at different models and asked my ipad user friends which one they use and 90% of them said they use 12inch ipad pro. I looked at the price and it’s just not gonna happen to me unfortunately so i tried to research alternative ipad models. Your video mostly answered all my questions and i wanna try get ipad air 5 but i also want to try procreate dreams and since it just came out there isnt alot of info on how much that’ll take up the storage space so i’m gonna wait a little longer til any info comes out. Until then my bet is to get an ipad air 5
Amazing video, thank you
I was all for the most expensive option - mind set and saving up. But the Air 5 has really won me over!! Looks like it'll be perfect for me - and it comes in purple! Specs and colour equal a win win for me. Digital art ready!
The Air 5 is an awesome value. I saw one on sale and it was a no brainer to upgrade from a 2017 pro to a 2022 Air. Rumor has it there will be a 12.9 inch air coming next year.
Really ? Argh I want to buy an ipad but I'm not sure if I should wait for the next upcomings
love this video
i use the ipad pro 12.9 inch m2 chip 2022 1TB drive and use procreate with the apple pencil 2nd gen. flawless with procreate.
i opted for affinty designer 2 for vector, sometimes fresco.
forget illustrator its 10 a month.
Thank you very helpful
very useful video, thanks
Thank you!!
4:15 . I own a 6th generation ipad and constantly draw and animate on it with 32GB. My stroage is basically crying but it gets the job done
I had a 5th gen with 32gb lol it was rough
Bringing the Mac hardware to the iPads is the best thing that Apple has done lately. The iPad air 5 being in the top tier is mainly because it got the same horsepower as the base 2020 M1 Macbook Air and the m1 iPad pros which is seriously powerful. It took them a while but apps like Procreate and Procreate dreams is what those M chips within the iPads are made for.
Does it matter what variation of storage to get for the Ipad air 5 to get the 41 layers on procreate? Could I go with the 64gb version and still get the 41 layers? Thx in advance for answering
Thank you for this big help i am now saving up for ipad air 5 that will be big upgrade for me from normal ipad and 1gen pencil
So informative
Thank you
Would you consider revising these charts once you have more in depth information about procreate dreams?
Such great resource
Hey, thanks for this great information. Do you think I should get an Air 5 as someone brand new to Procreate? Or should I wait for the new models?
I had the Samsung tab s6.. its stylus is pressure sensitive. I then bought the 12.9 2022 iPad and went straight for the pencil 2, but open box. Saved me money
Wow. Didn’t know about the usb c pencil. When my gen 1 Apple Pencil was no longer compatible with a newer iPad, I opted for a cheaper pencil. I know it doesn’t have pressure sensitivity but I can get thicker and thinner lines and I’ve adapted to it. I’m not working professionally using the iPad, so it’s fine.
PERFECTLY executed! MAIN INFO in the first 5 seconds of the video. this is how you don it
Oh, I wish I had seen your video before my 10 hours of research, lol. Thank you!
This was very helpful, thank you. Im looking at my 9.7 inch wishing it was an M2.
Hey Brooke! I noticed you had a case for your iPad that allowed it to stand on its own. I was wondering what kind you bought, since it looked really high quality!
Interesting. I just got a regular 7th gen iPad with 32GB lmfao. Been using it for about a month. Been happy with it honestly. It's rare for me to use more than like 10 layers or not to back up my files, so it works.
This is beyond brilliant Brooke. Thank you so much! These types of comparison charts are rare on the internet and practically non-existent on UA-cam. Pure gold! I recommend your Skillshare classes to friends and have pointed them to your website (which has your iPad buying guy), but some people rather watch a video so this is fantastic. I am definitely buying "Dream" when it comes out - I use the limited animation in Procreate and really enjoy it. I look forward to your new "Dream" classes on Skillshare ;). You are one of the main reasons I still subscribe to Skillshare. Have a lovely holiday season!
😭 ❤ Thank you so much for the kind words, it is so encouraging to hear. I cannot wait to share all the videos and tutorials I'm working on for Procreate Dreams! Thank you SO much for your support - it keeps me going!
Thank u so much for this informative video i have ipad air 5th gen
wonderful video, what do you think is the best option for a someone who has never done digital art?
After watching your previous analysis: I bought 2 used iPads for 180 each off Amazon the 10.2 iPad 9 gen. and we share an Apple Pencil. For me and my 10 year old we’ve been having a blast.( I had to wait a long time to find them at those prices. Took months between getting them both because I waited that price drop out.)
It is really helpful. Thank you so much. I am going to look at 12.9 iPad with 8GB . Have you used elecom paperlike?
Very informative video. I have a question regarding the latest Pro models and the hover function for the pencil. Can you turn this on and off? Or is it permanently on?
ive had the 64gb air 4 for a few years, i typically store my stuff on my computer
