That thing with the ice brought up a long forgotten memory. Way back in the 80's a couple of guys I worked with were walking out on the spring ice to measure it and see if one more day ice fishing was feasible. They admitted they were a bit nervous thinking the ice was too thin and then they heard it. They turned and there was some numpty getting ready to drive his motorhome onto the ice. I think they got him stopped before committing campercide but this is an indication that stupid is timeless.
Most ridiculous thing ever had to explain to a customer: A friend used to work for the Post Office. A lady asked how many one cent stamps she could get for a nickel. Another bought a sheet of stamps, peeled one off the backing onto her index finger, waved finger-and-stamp around in the air and asked "Are these self-sticking?" As Bill Ingvall would say, "Here's your sign!".
For me, it probably would have to be explaining that the customer's computer was working fine... he just needed to press the power button on his monitor to see it.

@@xagain3106 I am not "just waking up" to this as you mentioned. I have been telling people for decades that good jobs are about who you know, not what you know. Social networking has always been a priority for me. But that doesn't mean simply knowing the right people always gets you the job. Knowing the right people only gets the foot in the door. Unless you are rich, that door shuts on you super fast if you are blatantly incompetent. You generally have to at least show some basic understanding of the role you are expected to perform, or show potential for the ability to learn it.
My first ever tech job was an entry level IBM system operator working on a green screen, running tape backups, sending them to secure storage, and working the helpdesk. I knew someone who got the foot in the door for me, but I still had to nail the interview. Interview seemed to go well. They wished I knew more about IBM systems, but they seemed confident I could learn it. And they were desperate for someone, so I got a lucky break getting a job before they even posted it. That said, I was expected to learn a lot, and my manager at the time was one of the worst people I have ever met. Not just the worst manager, but the worst human being. He would say things that you would expect them to fire him over lest they turn into an HR or legal issue, yet he got to stay because he was the only one who knew how the systems worked. He also refused to teach me how to do much of my job because he didn't want anyone threatening his job security. Regardless, I learned how to do it and secured a seat for myself without his help. I didn't keep the job because of who I knew, I kept it because I was capable of learning it and did not hold the team back.
With the exception of politics and media, the rest of the world is still largely meritocratic, though I know that triggers young people these days since they don't know how to put effort into anything other than dancing on a phone camera for the hopes of a future payout. Not everyone who works hard becomes successful, but everyone who is successful has worked hard to get there (again, with the above exceptions). I grew up dirt poor and clawed my way out of poverty into a decent job and bought a house. It's certainly harder to do today than it was when I did it, but that doesn't mean people should just give up. I just find it so crazy how even myself, at this stage in my life, I have adapted to technology so much that I forgot how to do basic things, and don't have the patience to do anything more. I feel bad for people growing up with that power in their hands, because they never learned how to do it all without technology, but most importantly never learned patience to figure things out on their own without a search engine. By making things so easy with technology, they made life nearly impossible without it.
I used to remember dozens if not hundreds of phone numbers, and could pull them up by memory at will. Now I can't remember what I ate for breakfast on Friday of last week.
The guy’s facial expression and sounds he made after saying he took the cat’s medicine is what made it. That was good.
That lab wasn't scared of the cats. It was "on point"! I was playing golf decades ago on a course that had a sub-division intertwined with it. Past a home with a "statue" of a lab just like this, pointing under a bush near the course. Obviously, there was a rabbit or something under the bush. Finished up that hole, and played down the next, and that lab was still frozen in place, some 10 or so minutes later! Amazing animals!!!
That’s what my lab did when she saw an animal, stop and point for a while. Eventually she’d chase it.
The most ridiculous thing I ever had to explain to someone in customer service:
So I was once a waitress in a popular Mexican food restaurant and I had a retirement aged lady, sitting with her husband (who completely agreed with her) get really mad because there was avocado 🥑 in her guacamole. Literally a chunk of avocado in her guacamole. I actually laughed at her because I thought she was being funny, which pissed her off even more and then I realized she was serious. I had to explain to her that guacamole was smooshed avocado and she still didn’t understand. She wanted it with no chunks! She made me take it back to the kitchen and I had to explain to our Mexican chef why the guacamole was being sent back. He grabbed a clean fork, mashed the chunk of avocado, handed it back to me and said, “pinche gringos” 😂

When I lived in Germany I would practice very carefully before I pulled up to the McDonald's drive through so I could order in German. "Eine Big Mac, Eine Fish Mac, tzwei grosse pomme frittes," etc. only to have the employee respond in flawless English, "That's a Big Mac, a Fish Mac, two large fries...."
That happened to me. I was in the military and this really cute guy that I went to AiT with got stationed in Germany with me. I lived there previously so I’m pretty fluent in German. I took him to McDs and ordered in perfect German. She asks me was that for here or to go in English. He thought it was hilarious.
I was in Tunisia, and asked for sparkling water with my lunch.. 'Et de l'eau gazeuse, s'il vous plait..' The Tunisian waiter said, 'OK, and a fizzy water..'
I only know English but I would have tried to speak the local language like you did. There would be eyeball-rolling behind the counter and I would understand.
I wish fast food workers around here were like that. Many of them only speak Spanish. This isn't Spain.

The one with the kid jumping the fence actually brought back a memory when I was a kid and played baseball and the belief of superstition was in my head. We started our summer league season 0-3 and were getting beat down hard every time; even got mercy ruled on one of them. One day before our game , as a joke I did a cart wheel to get on the field in the 1st inning. We ended up winning the game and I continued to do it every game after. We ended winning the next 7 games and made playoffs. Lost the 1st game out and got eliminated. I should have added a backflip.😄😄😄

I've been a hairdresser for over 10 years, and you would not believe how many times I've had to have the "no sweetie, that's just your hair growing out" conversation. I also once had a lady come in to say her cut wasn't short enough and wanted me to trim it again for free (which I will absolutely do if it's been less than 7 days) but gave me shocked pickachu face when I told her seeing as her haircut was 6 WEEKS ago, that her hair just grew so she would have to pay again.

To be that guy: The letter W makes perfect sense when you consider the origin of the letter. In ancient Rome, the letter V was used for the letter U in writing. So a lot of cultures that have been colonised by Romans are kind of uncertain if a specific letter is meant as a V or a U. In German we have the saying "ein X für ein U vormachen" (pretend that an X is a U) in which barkeeps would extend the lines of a V (number 5 in Latin) to mark an X (number 10 in Latin). But for Germans, the V was translated as a U. Likewise, the "double V" in W (VV) is "doble uve" in Spanish, but "double U" in English.

I did a quick Google and seems the W in old Latin was called Wynn but was shifted to the more common Double U as time went on.

I have PTSD from being SA'ed as a child. I'm a person who is usually hyperaware. If you scare me I scream bloody murder. Somebody came up behind me at work and put his hands on my shoulders. I let out a scream. It was in a call center and everyone turned to face us. He was all defensive because it was just a joke. He didn't learn his lesson. A couple months later he did to a new employee. She turned him in for inappropriate touching.

The dumbest thing I’ve ever had to explain to a customer: That no, when the store is closed you can’t come in put stuff on the conveyor belt and pay for it when we open.
How would they even come in?
My experience is that you can do that. Is it legal? No. Can you do it? Yes. To feel better, just leave extra money there, more than it's worth.
Seems like every place I've worked, we've had people come banging/yanking on the locked doors after hours. Some of them would even barge in if you made the mistake of opening the door to tell them to read the damn sign!

@@terencejay8845 Yes, you are correct I typed in the wrong letter and I have now changed it. However it is pronounced 'And' there is not and has never been ampersand, the confusion came from the early attempts to educate the illiterate commoners and reciting the alphabet that we know A, B, C, D, etc up until X, Y, Z, &. Say it aloud Eks, Why, Zed, And.. And What? So the educated classes tried to explain it using Latin because that is a language every farmer understands. So they began to teach X, Y, Z and per se &, which translates as 'X, Y, Z and also &'. Even back then the Intelligentsia were so full of themselves that they never expected people to start saying Eks, Why, Zed, Anperseand. Rather than admit their mistake the literally took the letter out of the alphabet.

@@mbdg6810 Yes it can and back in the sixth and seventh century AD when the only written language in Europe was Latin it tried to explain the UU sound of old English. It wasn't pronounced as 'V' because 'V' wasn't a spoken sound on this island so the Romans defined 'U' and 'UU' as separate sounds that the natives made. 'U' Became Yew and 'UU' became Double-Yew. In France however the same word became 'V' and 'VV' because of language differences, We say Double-Yew and the French say Double-Vee.
