My son worked at Whole Foods. A lady with her child went through the check stand and the little girl was eating out of one of the boxes from the cart. The mother asked my son to go get another box off the store shelf to scan because she didn't want to upset her little darling and take the box away from the kid. My son grabbed the box, scanned it and had it back in her hands before she could react. (this is only one of many similar "entitlement" examples while he worked there.

If nothing else, the broken glass, as every window for miles around imploded from the shock wave. Probably good to avoid the thermal radiation that could burn any exposed skin (same reason the bombers were generally white and had faded insignia, too absorb less heat). Later on, after thermonuclear weapons and ICBMs and proliferation, basically no one was going to survive in any of the metro regions, both coasts were done for, the Midwest around Michigan, the Gulf Coast, anywhere near the missile silos in the midwest. But through the 50s and early 60s they still thought a nuclear war could be "won" and there would only be a relatively few, relatively weak bombs making it through, dropped by bombers. By the 70s it was hopeless for most everyone within 100 miles of a city (and they were the lucky ones really), but they had to tell them something. "if there is a war, just do what you want because you will be dead anyway" isn't conducive to good morale by the citizens, they had to feel like they had _some_ kind of hope.
What's scary is that we still have nukes aimed at us, but most people seem to basically discount that fact.

I did the school desk thing in the 1950's. Teachers said we were pushing desks to the windows and hiding under them so we wouldn’t be injured by flying glass from the blast. At the time, my dad was a nuclear physicist in Los Alamos, NM where "the bomb” had been designed and built. He reassured me the Russians wouldn’t bother to blow up research laboratories in a first strike. He reasoned they would most likely go after population centers and military bases. So we were pretty safe since we’d have time to get to bomb shelters. Seeing sputnik in the evening sky for a few months in 1957 just using binoculars made it all seem pretty real.

The schools initially had pretty good shops ( wood, metal, auto) taught by blue collar types. These offerings tended to dwindle a bit over time partly I think because parents wanted their little darlings to go to college / university.
I enjoyed my career for the most part but I cringe at the thought of having to teach these days.

That school table safe place thing has merit!!! Hear me out, from experience.
As a trainee military mechanic in a classroom "studying". Another trainee was doing a stall test on an M113 APC and it jumped into gear. The APC launched from the workshop floor, hit the classroom wall punched over the rubble of the wall into the classroom and landed squarely on 4 X desk, student, steel" where it somehow went back into neutral and sat there, at full noise, resting on those 4 desks. 11.4t sitting on $20 desks!
I'm already online looking for some to make a nuclear proof fort.

Ah, a scholar and a gentleman! I was hoping there would be at least one that figured it out. 1/5 people managed to solve the problem, making 80% of the population a complete waste of oxygen.
Sample size: 5 people on Zeducation.
(Hey, that sample size beats a lot of the coof-vaccine trials! Trust the science.)
