I think the “tree/branch thought” is actually quit accurate.
The way I think it as is when you make it past that branch you keep boing until you hit another, but when you finally get to the bottom of the tree. The fall is less hard. But if you face no branches at all the fall is really hard. Meaning that you never really experienced life, along with it’s problems.

This video is really special to me, it tackled about this topic really well and great care. This made me understand about self improvement a lot and it helped me get out of a dark place and made me feel really happy, so thanks Jaiden :)
i cant believe how much i needed this, ii have a really hard time not comparing myself to others so any time my dad explains a math question easily to me that i looked at for so long and couldn't understand, ill start crying and start winning that ill never be like him and that i cant believe that im so dumb and stupid. I didn't realize it till you spelled it out for us, but many times I shoot for some goal and when I complete it, I'm like " that wasn't hard at all, I should be doing harder stuff." I often don't stop to congratulate myself for the achievements I've already gotten. Thank you for this video! It's given me more confidence in my abilities already! My dad talks about self improvement a lot, and because he’s the worst it makes me not want to better myself out of spite. This is a specific situation, but getting told for years that you’ll never be good enough, means that when you realize that isn’t true you want to never think badly about yourself again because it hurts. I’m trying to find a balance, learning what I’m good at, *my* goals and values instead of just doing what other people tell me to do. It’s nicer this way.
TLDR; if you’ve pushed yourself too hard in the past and are now afraid to challenge yourself, don’t be (goofball). You deserve to live your best life, to be a good, healthy, successful person. Don’t stagnate out of fear.

I know I'm a bit (very) late, but this video is exactly what I needed to watch. Measuring your self-worth by your successes is incredibly easy to do, and I would know from experience. Here's a little story time:
In 2020, I was about to start middle school (I think it's called junior high in some places? and where I live, middle school starts in 6th grade) when covid happened. All the quarantining really deprived me of seeing any of my friends, and I became very reclusive. I didn't realize at the time how much I missed my friends, which was contributing to the almost depressive state I had accumulated. Keep in mind, I was in 5th grade, going into middle school, one of the most character-building times of your life, spent in social isolation.
When quarantine was over, I started 6th grade. We had to wear masks all the time, which honestly wasn't that bad. The part I hated -- and I mean *hated* was the fact every single one of the friends I had missed so dearly were in advanced classes. This means they'd be doing way more difficult stuff -- they were doing 8th grade math in 6th grade, like the stuff with quadratics and the like. But none of them were in a single one of my classes, and that scared me.
All of my friends were in classes with each other, so they had things to relate to, and the most common conversations they'd be having at lunch would be about classwork that I wasn't involved in from being at my level for school. This is the time when I started comparing my successes to theirs -- demeaning my worth because of how much "better" they were than I was. I fell into an unhealthy cycle of S/H and leaning into depressive thoughts again, and none of my friends would understand. I was in 6th grade.
Though, things got so much better. 6th grade was horrible, but 7th grade was better. I figured out my sexuality (now proudly panromantic-asexual

This! I never thought this video existed. I needed this since I am currently feeling down at myself for accomplishing something (What?), to the point that I have to set impossible deadlines or "raise the stakes".
You can average 60+ WPM typing speed, then what? You finished reading 2 books, will that make you money? You can create classes and functions in Python? You need to know more to be a data scientist (which is true... but learning a programming language in itself should nothing to be sneezed at).
All I'm saying is that the monkey bar metaphor is where I'm at right now. I'm always looking to be better, but when I become better, it's not enough for some reason.
It's fun to realize that I am not alone in this journey.

I know this is like 5 years late, but I'll still try to explain it the best I can to people like me who come here from time to time and watch this masterpiece.
So, as Jaiden said, yes, you are supposed to be proud of yourself and who you are and how much you have achieved in your entire life, but it shouldn't be so much that you turn into a narcissist, only focusing on your achievements and not focusing on what more you can do. But yes, the other way around is also bad and honestly, that side might be worse since when you think you're worthless and only focus on improving and your failures, even if it is to improve as much as possible, you put yourself in this endless cycle of torment by punishing yourself for your failures and forcing yourself to constantly improve without taking even a second to see how far you've come, let alone congratulate yourself or love yourself, and yeah, that is one of the many reasons how people get depressed/end up having depression which I would not recommend to have or experience unless you're kind of a freak like me that has a love/hate relationship with it due to being fascinated by it and wanting to study it as much as possible while also suffering from it and therefore hating it.
So uh..... yeah.... I guess I managed to type up another paragraph. I hope it helped someone out there at least to balance it all out and keep things in check and know the importance of doing so.

honestly, the biggest part in being an adult now is, when you see younger people be 40x better in things you wish you would be good at.
I always reflected on that, and hated myself for not being as successful as them, so I ended up giving up on a lot of things.
I recently started to do visual art, and even if I am really really spiteful of what I create, I try to just like push myself to at least finish it and then share it with people. I am always super reliant on peoples opinions, even if I really should not need that.
