Yup, older people without nimble hands I could see it happening a lot. But then again how many older people will be bothering with a sim card and internet.
I would say that one is too many. Easily sorted though, just by a tiny modification in the trim design. Now that it has been highlighted, I'm sure it will be an early production modification. If anyone else is concerned and they have such a car, a small piece of black duct tape will block the hole off to stop the possibility of the SIM card from dropping down the hole.
Just dropped the sim card into the abyss 1 hour ago, currently googling for solutions, yeah this is a stupid design, should have googled more before doing it. ANYONE ABOUT TO DO THIS PUT DUCT TAPE OVER THE HOLE FIRST!
It is actually the most logical thing, they could have easily had it in a stock configuration, one command could have enabled the option easily. When you drive a car you become so accustomed to everything about it, the interfaces, the drive, the quirks. I really doubt Mat missed that option. You could also say the dealer looked uncomfortable reacting to it. Never trust dealers.
Reading through the comments it's getting pretty frustrating. Guys, we want the honest reviews! There was an issue, it was fixed, and by the guys at the local dealership who yeah might be camera shy and not reading from a script, so what? Mat shows us these vids, whilst many others wouldn't! Keep the good spirit alive please, for all of our sakes!
Spot on!! I've driven their new S90 test drive cars in Stockholm 6 months ago and I found some faulty options in the car.. That's why I bought the merc E Class. And one thing that's very upsetting, volvo was needed 6-8 months to deliver the car if you customize the options. In the meanwhile I got my merc for just only 4 months with all the options I wanted, delivered from Germany. I live in Stockholm btw..
Americans are laughing at you now for saying "only" and "months" in the same sentence. And that's also why you get to wait months, NA and China get priority because they need cars on the lots in order to sell them. Europeans are happy to wait a year.
A reason to the folding mirrors not working before could of been due to a transit/dome/accessory fuse not being installed in the pre delivery inspection stage at the dealership. Where I work, every car has 2/3 fuses needing to be installed.
guarantee that it wasnt coded from factory. BMW did the same with folding mirrors on the G30, forgot to code mirror tilt on reverse in all cars. Its now a silent retrofit offered by dealers.
Yeah, I'm sure they going to send it to Volvo in Sweeden. Amazing quality right here, can't even get a piece of trim on properly that's a genuine part.
I used to work at a Volvo dealer and I currently own an xc60 and I have had one previously, I have never seen that problem before and I don’t know anyone that has.
Yup, tar remover has to be removed within minutes. And if it does dry on the trim you don't have to replace it like this guy. Polishing does the trick, i worked at a VW dealership and did detailing on several cars with the same problem. Chrome will almost look like new again. I'm sure wetsanding with a high grit will work too.
I reckon that traffic film remover had been used in slightly higher concentration than normal and been allowed to dry for a while on that chrome-like trim, and possibly a bit on the door trim in front of it. Probably when it was washed prior to customer delivery.
same thing happened to astra k too. it is usually fixed by updating sofware. no big deal it happens to almost all cars with big screen you manage everything.
Hi Mat Just when you moved your camera to the screen to walk us through the settings ( the Menu clearly stated that Installing software 4.42 Seconds into your Video. I reckon is Possibly due to the new SIM card Connecting and Initiating OTA when you installed the SIM card that fell through.. I read somewhere that Volvo will have OTA updates for Minor Fixes.
FYI you can fold in the mirrors when the car is running if your in a tight space or going thought a car wash or something by pressing both L&R mirror buttons at the same time
I have the same volvo xc60 and your video made me go down to the garage and i checked out all the window frames and actually i didnt find this issue, all frames are so clean, bright and solide. I dont know why just your car has this problem.
Props on getting your mirrors fixed Mat! But also, you shouldn't ever have to fold them manually regardless. If you push both the left/right mirror button at the same time, it should power-fold them on-demand.
Not all Volvo owners are treated the same way by the dealerships or even volvo HQ. My new volvo bought in Morocco and when the windshield cracked, I took it to volvo shop to replace it. They did a lousy job and consequently 1- the frame around the windshield started to rust apparently they used a sharp object to remove the hardened original glue 2- the rain sensor not working anymore and 3- the fitting inside the car on top of the windshield is rattling making an unbearable noise. The dealership doesn't want to take responsibility and fix the problem and when I contacted volvo HQ they did nothing for me. A rusty brand new volvo that's what I ended up with.
I've seen loads of vehicles in my line of work with this staining....all to do with cheap car washes using very strong TFR which destroys trim, rubber gaskets, alloy wheels.....if left to dry out this is exactly what happens and yes they probably did not rinse that particular side as thoroughly and it dried.......
On my volvo xc60 2010, it had a problem on a drain of the sunroof was disconnected causing me to run out of rainwater on the floor of the rear passenger. I discovered the water problem after 2 months of analysis. Very unpleasant when you go back to the dealer volvo to repair and pay the account for a manufacturing defect. Now a have a v60 T5 crosscountry 2015. Am enjoy it very much
If there's a design flaw meaning a piece of trim takes twice as long to fit as it should do then why should the customer foot the bill for the extra time? (Appreciate in this case it's a warranty job).
Out of warranty, the customer pays for however long a job takes. Nobody else pays. Its the customer's car, not the dealer's or Volvo's. That's how it is in the real world.
Everybody seems to think that they are entitled to free stuff these days and always wants someone else to be responsible. Nobody likes paying for anything, including running their cars, but nobody is going to take the financial burden over for them.
I certainly don't feel 'entitled' to free stuff and I am quite happy to pay for the maintenance of my car. The point I was making is that paying for other's mistakes is not entirely palatable, and that's in light of the comment made by Matt in the video that if something takes twice as long as it should through no fault on the customer's part, very often it's still the customer who pays.
I'm sure that if you did the job it would be done on time every time and if you did encounter problems you would certainly not charge the customer for the time you actually spent sorting it out. [note that this post uses sarcasm to make the point]
In some cars, not specifically this one. Most of the tech addons such as CarPlay are already pre-installed on these cars but just need to be activated. I wonder if its the same with these folding door mirrors as in the video you stated that the car went back to volvo and they did something with the software. The CarPlay thing is definitely true on some Mercedes models as you can buy the activation parts on the internet for less than the price of the addon when you purchase the car.
My 2017 xc60 (the previous model ) was an ex demo and had the same marks on the chrome around the windows. I tried various cleaners inc cellulose thinners, but to no avail. I then used coarse cutting compound and finally T cut to remove the film. so far so good.( I didnt have time to drive to dealers etc.)
My 2018 has it too and the drivers door trim was lifting away when I bought it so they replaced the one door trim but all the others have that tarnish on them! I will try some aggressive cutting compound and see what happens. Meguries ultimate didn’t seem to work
all cars come with different coding depending on country/climate and options thats why the option wasnt there, you dont new a reflash, you just have to check some option in computers software. as for the trim it usually gets like that from cleaning soap with to much degreaser
Easy to find out if they did a software/firmware update (and are denying it). Plug in a ODB reader and relevant software - should show when it was last updated.
I remember we went to that same Volvo dealership in Colindale to buy an original model Volvo S60 D5. But my dad hated it because the ride was too hard and the engine was sluggish. So we soon swapped it for an Audi A6 C5 up the same road and he loved that.
I also remember that I bought a new car and I drove it for a year but the battery went flat and Nissan were kind enough to replace it but after the replacement few things started happening which didnt happen before and one example of that was the auto locking of the doors past 20 kmph so this could happen
@Matt. I never usually comment; however, I wanted to assure you that you are not an idiot. I was having a lot of issues with my 2018 XC90 after purchasing it. Apparently, my car was not connecting to the internet and would not update itself. So I could not change or access multiple setting similar to your issue. After taking it to the dealer, I felt as though I got back a new car as the software was quite different and updated once they got my car to connect. Also, one time while driving in Myrtle beach with family. I let my father borrow my car and gave him a key after connecting it to a profile I made for him. When we switched who was driving I tried to change the profile and somehow froze up the computer and I could not do anything on my screen. Furthermore, the car changed to metric, while I am used to the American standard and the car stayed like that all day. Thus, I was very worried about getting a ticket from my inproper KPH to MPH estimates.
Im with you on this. I bet, for some reason the software before visiting the dealer was not the correct version for the model you had, i.e. a lower spec model software with no mirror control.
I had the same problem with my Mercedes B class it’s the soap detergent when you get your car washed that causes the spotting on the trim round the windows
I had the same issue on the window trim on my Jaguar XF (all of them, not just one panel), they told me that it was caused by the ocean salt when the car was being shipped from England to the U.S. where I live. Not sure that is true having seen your video though. Jag fixed it of course which was good.
Andreas A early production car that needed a software update and exchange of a trim part and you think it's a quality issue *lol* Fixed by Volvo in less than a day for free.
My friend has an audi a8 from 2016 he has the same problem with the trim being oxidized. It all showed up as a result of the washing liquid being used at the car wash.
Window has to come out to fit the chrome properly. Or in many cases on different makes it chromes don't come separately like it did on the Volvo and you have to replace the whole window
0:20, I'm almost willing to bet that it's due to the factory line that makes that trim, had some kind of chemical (possibly) accidentally sprayed on it and after some additional processes it stayed on it. I'm almost certain that all the models that came from the same line/got sprayed from the same machine will have this.
Various options on my V40 are not adjustable from the infotainment console unless the engine's running or you've pressed the START button with the clutch up, which puts it into a fully-on state. Perhaps that's the difference here.
I think it's kinda common w the brand as with BMW Merc etc. My v60's air conditioning wasn't working one day and the shop fixed it just by reinstalling the software. My friend new Merc couldnt start ...... Nuts
Not at all surprised that you are already had problems, I had a XC90 which was good looking inside and out but was the most unreliable and underdeveloped car I I have ever owned. I had constant problems, and yes, it started corrode ( filiform corrosion of external finishers) after only a few weeks. I now have a Range Rover sport which should be unreliable according to everything you read, but it had been faultless so far ( 25 k miles ) and feels so much moe dependable than the Volvo which entertained with" fault of the day" Mat - keep the reports coming, you will have plenty more to report on - you will have amber and red engine management Christmas warning lights soon!
Mat, The problem with the chrome molding goes as far back as 2006. My S80 has those nasty water spots all over the chrome molding. This is nothing new for Volvo.
It was a good video but i CANNOT find anything about the update on your findings when the chrome was sent off. I see a ton of the suvs seem to have this issue, yet even in a search off all the Volvo videos you covered i dont see the update.
Hi Matt was wondering if you could do a video on VW Caravelle 7 seater. Haven't found a video that has your kind of judgement on the Caravelle. Much anticipated from your point of view
Tbh, it looks like water marks/tarnish, every car I've had with brightwork on the sils has gone like this...heck, even the the black 'night pack' trim on our E350 Estate goes tarnished, just cannot be bothered buffing it 2hrs a day!
Probably takes the option through an update via internet. You stated yourself that the internet was not set up in the vehicle due to the SIM card getting lost. Sure, they could probably manually do it at the dealership, but it likely took the update the moment the new SIM card was installed. Just guessing of course.
He's not that stupid but fell for the line regarding the window trim piece " we've never had that problem before" !! Did they not replace the other one that was slightly faulty?
I think if this wouldn't be you (as carwow) they would never accept the complain for a non public person regarding the trim part. That is for sure. A lot of new XC90 owners are complaining about the Volvo's after sale customer service. But its a shame that you already had to visit the service with multiple issues. I'm expecting from a brand new premium car to be faultless. And I have a slight suspicion this wasn't the last visit to the workshop either. So I probably will wait until the new X3 comes out...but I really liked this car. :(
Really hate that dealership, had a brand new 2015 xc60 which seemed to have slightly off centre steering and was driving weirdly, was told by their so called master engineer or blagger that I would be hard pressed to find one with out this problem, quickly and calmly told him to drive back to the shop, and problem was finally sorted by dealership in Watford as it was bent control arm done during shipping or something, why not say you don’t know, and not blame the customer. They have updated the car without telling you
Sometimes features can be deactivated for good knows whatever reason (even a/c), and a computer is needed to reactivate. Not sure what happened here, but it's one possibility.
I also have similar problem with the chrome trim on my previous volvo V40 Sad to see they still have not fixed this little aesthetic issue on their latest car Nice car otherwise
There are two ways of avoiding this issue. The first is not to use aggressive cleaning chemicals. The second is not to buy cars with chrome, or even polished 'stainless' steel trim. [Stainless steel does in fact stain and show brown signs of rust in many cases]
i used to work next to a volvo dealer, and you would not believe how many NEW cars would come back on a trailer to be fixed every day (hint: 2 to 3 a day)
Reso205 We need 2 numbers here to get a statistic; how many cars came back, and how many cars didn't come back (total number of cars sold, minus the ones which come back). Then a reliability record can be accurately calculated, and compared to other manufacturers doing the same to see if Volvo is above, below, or on par with their competitors. Without this it's just hearsay
thebanditsix I did that for my Nissan Rogue (it had cameras in the mirrors) After 10 months the slightest highway wind gust would fold them in... Hence why I went Volvo
Bloody hell, you transferred your freckles into the car, Mat! :))
That sim card design is really stupid, seems like dropping it would be really easy to do, as demonstrated by your staff.
Yup, older people without nimble hands I could see it happening a lot. But then again how many older people will be bothering with a sim card and internet.
I would say that one is too many. Easily sorted though, just by a tiny modification in the trim design. Now that it has been highlighted, I'm sure it will be an early production modification. just happened to me this morning... very bad design
@@daskurka probably have to take the carpet up? Did you get yours out?
Your system was probably updated the moment you put in the SIM card properly.
Bet that technician was delighted to be filmed working on the car.
Mr Prashant was super happy, even when he was sad
i realize it is kinda off topic but does anyone know a good place to watch newly released movies online?
@Jaxon Abraham flixportal :P
@David Marley thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it!
@Jaxon Abraham No problem :)
Matt seems like an understanding reasonable customer, which is a bit of a rarity.
They just coded the option in because they balls'd up.. I'm sure there was many frantic calls to the press office! Haha
Never trust dealers.
exactly
The trim is like that because of the chemicals that they used when they are valeting the car.I was a valeter 5 years so trust me is that
Mat, waiting for Volvo XC40 Review ..
Mr. Perfect ! Production doesn't start until November so don't expect a review until early 2018.
And it's ugly
Mr. Perfect ! I

That chrome trim looks like my nail polish when it has bubbles. Interesting.
Spot on!!

You are not an idiot they did a sbeaky upgrade!
Pete Davis they definitely did, and disguised it by suggesting you're an idiot, niiice CS there ^_^
I think it was a "show on ui" option that had to be enabled by the dealer (they may hide it on non-inscription models to meek people pay more for it)
Dried on traffic film remover , either you've took it for a £5 wash or the dealer did
Just seen this reply and you are most probably correct. TFR can certainly have this effect. Especially is used too concentrated.
Yup, tar remover has to be removed within minutes. And if it does dry on the trim you don't have to replace it like this guy. Polishing does the trick, i worked at a VW dealership and did detailing on several cars with the same problem. Chrome will almost look like new again. Wetsanding chrome with high grit? I don't think so.
JordanOnYT deffo tfr, it’s such a shame he takes the cars to cheap car washes
Looks more like a coating issue from the supplier since it was only the rear chrome piece that had that issue.
Great review....back to the basics. Thumbs up.
I reckon that traffic film remover had been used in slightly higher concentration than normal and been allowed to dry for a while on that chrome-like trim, and possibly a bit on the door trim in front of it. Probably when it was washed prior to customer delivery.
You can also fold the mirrors by pressing L and R mirror buttons simultaniously. :)
Mat that bubbling thing is from a specific tree/plant that you've parked under and then it releases that.
same thing happened to astra k too. it is usually fixed by updating sofware. no big deal it happens to almost all cars with big screen you manage everything.
Haha, that volvo guy really thought you were being a bit of an idiot xD
Hi Mat
Just when you moved your camera to the screen to walk us through the settings ( the Menu clearly stated that Installing software 4.42 Seconds into your Video.

I’ve had my XC60 D4 for over a year now and I love it to bits. Actually sold my 2019 Q5 for it 😬
How it is after this time?
Mat - with the folding wing mirrors try pushing the two mirror adjust buttons simultaneously, the one's in the driver's door.
had the exact same trim problem on my 2013 V60, dealer replaced all trims under warranty. thank goodness.
I have the same volvo xc60 and your video made me go down to the garage and i checked out all the window frames and actually i didnt find this issue, all frames are so clean, bright and solide. I dont know why just your car has this problem.

Nice Volvo, premium price with premium quality! :D
Andreas but volvo safety is besttttt hur dur
Andreas A early production car that needed a software update and exchange of a trim part and you think it's a quality issue *lol*
Fixed by Volvo in less than a day for free.
Sirion Well yes.. quite clearly a quality issue as you so brilliantly outlined in your comment?..
F off, it can happen I have the new XC90, and it's super quality
Maybe they focus on the things that is important than a fucking list look at American cars their safty sucks
My dad had a problem with the folding mirror on his 2013 Volvo XC60, we just dropped it of at the authorised workshop, and they fixed it. :)
Hi Matt, I have the same issue with the trim on my volvo xc60 2016 and rag and wd40 bring it back to new condition.

Mat,
The problem with the chrome molding goes as far back as 2006. My S80 has those nasty water spots all over the chrome molding. This is nothing new for Volvo.
This also happens to Skoda, VW etc.. It can be polished of with no problems. Then coat them with ceramic coating and they will last. :)

That sales man don't have words to say...cause it's manufacturer problem
1 - should have left that trim on, it's called patina. 2 - the folding mirrors on my 2001 S60 still work perfectly. :-)

That man speaks vey well from Volvo Press Office !!
Hi Matt was wondering if you could do a video on VW Caravelle 7 seater. Haven't found a video that has your kind of judgement on the Caravelle. Much anticipated from your point of view
Can you please see if you can have the new BMW X3 long term review too. I am interested to see how nice to use it everyday
The crome trip comes as a unit with the glass new glass needed
My wife's Mercedes A250 has that same mottling on the window trim.
Will most likely go away with polishing.
Not necessarily. It is most likely to be caused by strong TFR used while washing and allowed to dry and causing tarnish.
Tbh, it looks like water marks/tarnish, every car I've had with brightwork on the sils has gone like this...heck, even the the black 'night pack' trim on our E350 Estate goes tarnished, just cannot be bothered buffing it 2hrs a day!
I feel like they forgot to apply some protective coating on that part at the factory.
They should anodize it with a clear layer
same thing happened to the trim on a 2005 Audi A6 I used to own.
by mine XC90 2007 gen. car was the same problem with those prints
Probably takes the option through an update via internet. You stated yourself that the internet was not set up in the vehicle due to the SIM card getting lost.
Sure, they could probably manually do it at the dealership, but it likely took the update the moment the new SIM card was installed.
Just guessing of course.
I believe you Matt, I felt like the dealer was lying to your face.
Mat, this can only be an alien message carved on your car. I can't believe you didn't appreciate it....
This looks like a great dealer!
100% they probably didn't include the folding mirrors when you bought it... Software update enabled it, it happens
Hy Mat ! Between Volvo XC60 and Mercedes GLC what to choose ? why ? a head 2 head review would be great. thx
He's not that stupid but fell for the line regarding the window trim piece " we've never had that problem before" !! Did they not replace the other one that was slightly faulty?
Acid rain or non PH bal shampoo used !! That's what I was told when mine went the same way
I think if this wouldn't be you (as carwow) they would never accept the complain for a non public person regarding the trim part.
Definitely put a video up of you pranking other car wow members it would be brilliant
Interested to know if you ever used the OnCall system!
What was the results of the problem ? Two years on !
Tough life
So premium.
That door trim problem is even on the 2012 Volvo s60s.
They have updated the car without telling you
The guy from Volvo press office has those teeth that match those "how did you guess I was from Britain?" memes.
Sometimes features can be deactivated for good knows whatever reason (even a/c), and a computer is needed to reactivate. Not sure what happened here, but it's one possibility.
Maybe because your internet wasn't working, the car couldn't update. When they put in a new SIM card, it updated with the new mirror options.
I also have similar problem with the chrome trim on my previous volvo V40
Sad to see they still have not fixed this little aesthetic issue on their latest car
Nice car otherwise
There are two ways of avoiding this issue. The first is not to use aggressive cleaning chemicals. The second is not to buy cars with chrome, or even polished 'stainless' steel trim. [Stainless steel does in fact stain and show brown signs of rust in many cases]
Any chance you can review the XC 60 T8 phev 2021 thanks
I think for safety reasons. The car does not allow to fold the mirror in certain countries as the snow may freeze it and unable to unfold.
i used to work next to a volvo dealer, and you would not believe how many NEW cars would come back on a trailer to be fixed every day (hint: 2 to 3 a day)
Reso205 We need 2 numbers here to get a statistic; how many cars came back, and how many cars didn't come back (total number of cars sold, minus the ones which come back). Then a reliability record can be accurately calculated, and compared to other manufacturers doing the same to see if Volvo is above, below, or on par with their competitors. Without this it's just hearsay
That exact thing happened with our 1987 Volvo 240
With the trim piece I’d guess something was wrong with the top coating but who knows XD
My car has a system to fold the mirrors in, it's called my ✋ hand, works perfectly everytime.
Yes, mine old volvo 850 is the same hand job :D never fails
thebanditsix I did that for my Nissan Rogue (it had cameras in the mirrors) After 10 months the slightest highway wind gust would fold them in... Hence why I went Volvo
Seems like a reliable well built car /s
I think they gave you the Friday afternoon car.. finished in a rush and forgotten about. In other words a lemon...
