One of my goals is to be a tourist in my city & through life! I constantly say I want to try new places, go to this town, etc. but I am determined to really push myself & see my city/state as much as possible

I got into strength training around a year and a half ago, after having done only yoga and running for years. I started by buying myself a set of adjustable dumbbells (from 2 to 10kg) and exercised by following at home workout videos 3 to 4 times a week (I went through a few month long programmes by Justina Ercole. I love her!). I learnt so much about functional training, correctly positioning my body and just what exercises I can do (how many reps, sets, what tempo) through those videos, and all of it at home, with no awkward “I don’t know what i’m doing” feeling. After a few months I started dipping my toes into going to the gym, and anytime I went I would just find a bench, get myself some dumbbells and do my at home workouts, so I never felt lost or stupid, because I knew exactly what I was doing. Eventually I replaced my dumbbell deadlifts with a barbell. Then I started using a pullup machine. Then another time I would try a rowing machine. The next time another machine. And slowly but surely I got to the stage where I now know exactly what I’m doing at the gym and why. I’m still learning new things, but I feel so confident walking up to a weight rack and working out, even if I’m surrounded by hunky dudes. i never thought I’d get there :).
So my biggest advice is committing to a good at home workout program. Some real stuff with dumbbells heavy enough to challenge a beginner. Adjustable ones are best, as then you can use the lighter setting for upper body and the heavier one for lower body. You’ll find yourself confidently entering the gym before you know it :)

For the hair; you could go icy blonde and enjoy that for as long as possible then go for a big chop, dye your hair back to its natural colour, then grow it out. I did that a few years ago and it was a good way to go out regarding hair colouration.

Love the video! And some advice from someone who went icy blonde: do it once to get it out of your system. I only kept mine for like 8 months because of the cost of upkeep and the damage. With my natural hair color being pretty dark, my roots were never as icy as the rest of my hair and I never felt like I got it to look the way I wanted it. That being said, I always wanted to do it and anyone telling me why I shouldn’t never changed my mind. Doing it and not loving it made me really love and embrace my natural hair 😊

If you want a medievalist revival book, you should read The Last Unicorn by Peter S Beagle. It was written in the 60s and it has beautiful imagery partnered with great insights into what it means to have autonomy (especially as a woman.) It quickly became one of my favorite books I have ever read

my fitness advice: i tried to Be A Runner for the same reasons as you (free, alleged "runner's high", etc) and it just wasn't fun or worth it for me. now i roller skate and do strength training and actually enjoy exercising! there are so many kinds of exercise out there and it should be something you look forward to. like others i highly recommend checking out different home workouts on youtube so you can get a better sense of what you like and go from there.
wishing you all the best for the year and i can't wait for all the videos you make!!

Feel you so hard on the exercise topic! I’ve been struggling with staying consistent in the gym, running, etc. as well but the thing that really motivates me are the people around me. Running has never been my thing, too, so I substituted it with martial arts and what kept me on track were the amazing people I’ve met there and even became friends with! Going to the gym was an additional thing since some of the people from that class went to the same gym as I did and offered to go there together. So my advice would be to find like-minded people who may have the same struggles, but will motivate each other to exercise together and feel less awkward in the gym for example. :)

Big time for reading: get an app like Fable. It really helps hold me accountable as someone who loves to read but then proceeds not to for months at a time. It asks if you’ve read that day and tells you want percentage of a book you’ve gotten through, which has really motivated me to finish them instead of setting a book down and not picking it up again

when is comes to working out and and eating “healthy” pls be careful cuz it can be a slippery slope for some with disordered eating. this isn’t to discourage you for doing those things but i think it’s best to start with one or the other, i think when we dive into both you can get unrealistic expectations on how fast results come because most of time you get the most results after the first few months and hit a very normal plateau and makes us think “if we just eat cleaner” or “workout even more” we will continue to get those fast results…
my recommendation start by focusing on working out and getting familiar with the gym and then you can lean into eating more of an 80/20 diet (because processed food aren’t always bad) anddd always prioritizing a healthy mind and body not a small body

I really enjoyed reading Longitude by Dava Sobel. It's a non-fiction about the history of how humans made clocks precise enough to know where they are in the world. You can figure out you're latitude (how North/South you are) using only the sun/stars, but to know your longitude (how far East/West you are), you're going to need a really good clock.

7:56 American Dutchess actually has this type of witchy victorian boots being available for pre-order! I've been dreaming about these boots, but I live in a country where it's really difficult to buy something from the US, and it's barely possible to find a similar type of boot in where I live😭
also, if you have wavy hair, I'd say that Curly Method is really worth trying as a help to grow them out, and in some ways also has potential to ease the daily care routine. my hair are wavy/lightly curly too, and when I started doing curly method and use a softer shampoo instead of the usual harsh one, after about one year of this, my hair just naturally became less oily, and now I have to wash them just once a week! (and there are styling products out there that can also hold for a week, so it's really convenient actually)

Goth really can be a plethora of things. I enjoy the music style just as much as I enjoy the fashion and makeup, but there's really no rule about what "true goth" means. If you ask me, it's about accepting the darkness in life and seeing the beauty of the hurt and suffering we can go through to make life lighter and happier without glorifying those.
I know there's a lot of gatekeeping and hierarchy in the subculture, but if anything I think it's nice to see "non-goths" (whatever that can be) exploring it as part of their personal journey. Who knows, they might stay, and even if they don't, maybe they can help revitalize things.
I know it was only a stray thought on your video, but it made me want to comment.
Cheers, I love your style, the video was superb too.

I'm not goth but my favorite place to dance in my city is a goth club that has been around for about 25-30 years. The warmth, comradery, and carefree expressiveness of the people I've met there is more than other clubs I've been to. That's why I go (plus good music and people are there to dance more than to be seen, and for me dancing is therapeutic). I usually feel very at home there even though I don't look goth. I've never felt gatekeeper vibes. Maybe it's different with younger goths now? I'm 42 and most at this club are my age or older.

I'm just like you in terms of being the least athletic kid in class growing up. I do reformer pilates 2x week (plus home yoga) - pilates is expensive but worth it. See if there's a studio near you that does a discounted trial membership. I promise the reformer isn't nearly as scary as it looks!
Also I know you said you're not a fan, but maybeee consider a Kindle/e-reader. As a PhD candidate who basically reads for a living, there's no way I'd read as much as I do without one. Book rec - Practical Magic series. I think you'll find those books delightful

love the medieval inspired fashion revival as well, especially thinking of ren faire outfits for this year (& incorporating them day to day)
the making fun of actual goths is not it tho lol.. from my pov we're just a bit tired & wary of everyone using goth to mean anything with black or dark colors, it's not specific to u. it's a music subculture so we tend to take the music & community aspect more seriously but i get that it's more colloquially used to just mean "dark aesthetic" now. i think ur comment just rubbed me the wrong way & comes across as a bit mean girl imo. no hate intended, i think your style is beautiful & enjoyed the video, aside from that comment :)
