How to make a fence panel

  • Feather edge fence panels can be bought pre-made, however you can make the panels yourself and can make them from the best materials and ensure that all cut edges are treated with wood preserver. Here we make four - six foot long feather edge panels from 6 inch feather edge boards, which are fixed to a panel that is made from 2*2 inch uprights and 3*2 inch supports, all cut ends are treated and Galvanised nails have been used. These panels should last for years before they need replacing. If you do not have an old panel to draw around you can mark a radius following this video • Marking a radius | DIY...

    Thanks again for sharing your wisdom. I liked the idea using a small piece of cut down wood to help make exactly the same overlap on each board for a neater job

    Nice tips. Especially long piece wood kept secured on the worktop while sawing to ensure no movement. I shall keep that one in mind. Once again thank you for the upload. Awesome video.

    Nailing through 2 boards can result in splitting when the boards expand and contract in wet and dry weather.

    Nicely done - appreciate the tip of coating ends with wood preserver. (I should have done that on some of my previous projects!)

    Great work. Much better than the flimsy ones you get in B&Q etc.
    What's your opinion of the nail gun after a bit of use? Does the battery last a long time? Looks like it really speeds the job up.

    spent last week putting up some six foot high hit and miss boarding with the new dewalt nailer and it ate it up!! my new favourite bit of kit. you ever tried express nails? i find they are fantastic for wall battens and save a lot of pissing around with plugs. great video!

    Nice job, you make everything look so easy! :-) I have just bought that Rage circular saw a few weeks ago from Screwfix, they emailed me a week later to say that if you order one now they will throw in a Rage mitre saw for free. Doh :-(

    Yet another great in depth video. I am finding timber to be really expensive at the moment.Do you buy your timber from a merchant/timber yard or do you go to one of the DIY stores? I used to work at one of the large DIY chains and although the timber is quite good quality I reckon you do pay for this.
    Cheers N.

    Hi, did you manage to shorten your fencing panel? If not you simply remove the enough of the feather edge boards to suit the length of fence panel needed, plus another board which will allow you to saw off the top, middle & bottom rails to length required, then build back up by re-connecting the upright post to the cross rails & finish by re-fitting the removed piece of feather edge.

    Great video. When you spaced the boards out using the bit of wood (pre nailing), what is to stop the boards moving as you are nailing them? Or did I miss something.

    No problem .... I guessed.
    I really like your cordless nailer ... I wish they sold them here in the US ... I have no idea why they don't.

    Really like your in depth explanations. You didn't say which nails, from experience - ensure you use class 3 hot dipped galvanised nails (believe they are coated twice). More expensive but rust bleed is inevitable if you use standard thinly galvanised nails (class 2)
    Of course you can get stainless nails....

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  3 роки тому +1

      Sorry, I think I used stainless nails.
      I'm not keen on galvanised, as they often rust eventually.
      Thanks for the comment 👍

    did u make a cost saving overall ? and thats a nice drill you have there, i've noticed youve been using alot of dewalt lately. Would you rate dewalt as better than Bosch blue ? you dont use that bosch auto-rotate drill much anymore. has it reached the end of its life?

    Looks great , but how would I have to make an even arch on the top of the fence if I was not to have a template available like you had and also my fences are not the same in width just to make my life harder!

    good vid, but why not repair the two end pieces on the existing panels so they fit in the pillars properly?

    Another great video. How would go about replacing just a single piece of fence board what was damaged in the middle section?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  3 роки тому +1

      Probably the easiest way is to use a multi-tool with a metal cutting blade, slide that in between the slats to cut the nails, then remove the piece and replace with new nails.
      Thanks for the comment 👍

      @@ultimatehandyman just want to say your suggestion worked a treat, thought I was going to have to replace a whole panel, but 3 boards later. Thanks again truly appreciated.

    Great work and video as always. Why British people use metric and imperial measurement systems at the same time? That is annoying like my last customer. She told me dimensions of the room in feet then asked how many square meters it is and how many tiles 15x20 inches she will need.

  • @motormusic1

    How cost effective is this compared to buying a pre made panel from builders supplies? I think a similar panel to the one you made costs about £28 readymade?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  10 років тому +3

      It's probably cheaper to buy ready made ones, but the quality is not the same. Hopefully mine will last a long time as long as they get a coat of stain every couple of years!
