I tried to get into the elevator trade, but I couldn't. I was in my late 30's, a navy vet with a strong background as a factory electrician/mechanic and PLC's, but they didn't want me. I wrote letters and sent out numerous resumes and never heard a thing. I called the union about an apprenticeship and they told me I had to apply online, what was a new and unfamiliar thing at the time, and I didn't know how, and wasn't able to find out.
I know it can be challenging to get into the union at times and every local is different. Some people opt to join non-union companies because they have more flexibility in who they choose.
I started as a fitter’s mate at the age of 35 for ECC ,the electric construction company,6 years later I was promoted to service technician when we were bought out by Schindler lifts a Swiss company,I am now retired after 32 years service, the best job ever.
@@mikehosking8089 That is awesome! I'm glad to hear it worked out. if you are ever looking for an inspector job, or know someone who is, please reach out.
I really can't answer that very well, because it can really be very different at different companies and on different projects. Sorry I'm not more helpful.

Great interview, sparks my interest even more for Local 1. I’m currently a Railroad worker in NYC

Quick question, how long do Constructors stay on a job like say if they’re building elevators in a 50 plus floor building?
