Thank you so much!! The song is bit odd, but it becomes a lot clearer if you're familiar with the Demon Core Experiments. The TLDR of it is that the Demon Core was the name given to an atomic bomb that went unused after world war 2. It instead was used for experimenting, but due to the amount of radiation, the job was very dangerous, and resulted in the direct deaths of two scientists, and possibly more due to the long lasting effects of radiation poisoning. I highly recommend you look into it if you're into that kind of stuff!
In regards to the story of the song, we know it's the demon core, not simply because of the referring to criticalities and isotopes, but the specific mention of 14 pounds, as that was how much plutonium made up the Core. I think the song tells a slightly unique story however, about a scientist who is involved in a supercriticality accident, which results in radiation poisoning. "Though it stopped as it started, I'm still as good as dead," I wrote to refer to how even though you may feel fine after experiencing the poisoning, your life span may be significantly shortened.
This scientist manages to survive the accident and returns to the lab in verse two, where a second character is introduced, an egotistical scientist who believes he can perform a successful trial, despite the protagonist seeing him making the same mistakes, the egotistical scientist doesn't listen, no matter what the protagonist says.
"Oh my god, good god, I'm gonna live", "But resentment takes my hand and we go to hell again." These lines indicate the twist in feeling. Despite everything, the egotistical scientist seems to be succeeding in the trial, however, the protagonist is overcome with resentment and jealousy, to see someone less qualified to not only succeed where they failed, but to also accept that their life has been cut in half after the accident, it causes the protagonist to ruin the trial, causing both of them to receive lethal amounts of radiation, killing them both.
At least that's my interpretation! Some other fun things to note the life counter in the middle and end of the song, and a few references I made to the Demon Core incident (The screwdriver :) ). I think this song is really cool! And I hope I did the story justice in the lyrics.
