Same problem the world over. Communication! I speak a little Thai, Japanese, Spanish, but always pretend I don't understand. It is safer that way, no confusion as to what I want or need.
Your approach William is wise. Unfortunately in the Philippines because most people speak English, we expats assume they understand what we are saying. Not necessarily so! And we fail to allow for the cultural interpretation Filipinos place on what we say. This leads to significant confusion.

As soon as we can talk 2 words of english, you think we are fluent. No, we are not. And what about the different accents ? You need to understand that. It would improve your relationship with pinays and with non-english language fellows. 2 Let me tell you a story: An irish guy was walking on the beach. He found the wonderful lamp of Aladdin in the sand. Aladdin: what do you want ? You will have. Irish: I'm making business with the USA and I don't like travelling in the planes. I would like a bridge between Ireland and New-York. Aladdin: oh sorry. That's too much. Something else ? Irish: ok. I would like to understand girls mind. Aladdin: ok.
