I’ve been saying since the development announcement that this camera is going to be confusing for video shooters. As it should be, it’s an action photography camera, albeit with some killer video features. But the update, relative to the mark ii is mostly video centric which is the part that I think will confuse some people.
But still, as a video shooter, I don’t see many scenarios where this camera would be a better purchase than the c200
As a hybrid shooter, I can definitely see the point in buying this camera. But even then maybe a used C200 and an EOSr could serve you better depending on your use case for the same money.
And as a certain kind of photographer, sports, wildlife, action, etc; well, this camera was literally made for you, so there’s that lol
But one thing is for sure, and that is that I really like this version of canon that gives us killer, overlapping features on tons of great cameras and lets us decide which is best for us rather than telling us we need to spend an extra $10,000 to go up to the next tier to get that feature. Canon is on the move again and that makes me happy lol. Between this camera, the c500ii, and the firmware updates to their last couple cameras, they’ve really listened which is exciting stuff.
This is the Jimmy Chin camera (he films and photographs rock climbers as he climbs himself)
pahwraith yeah I know jimmy. He’s definitely the kind of person that this camera is for both as a video and stills camera. He was a huge fan of the mark ii.
He actually carries the EOSr for photo expeditions, believe it or not

Also,.you tend not to climb in the rain, so you don't need totally bombproof cameras.

Hidden costs are enormous - IMHO this camera targets high end sports photography- another issue is 4K 6K 8k is about high end client productions but the 90% plus joe blogs don’t have 4K screens and 1080p HD is still doing the business!!

Hey Armando. Long time subscriber here. May i ask when you get your hands on the 1dx3 to test good the 1080p 10 bit 422 video with clog? Like different scenarios and compare it to 4k, and may be to raw? I kinda find very interesting the 180mbps with c-log option of the 1dx3...

Good points on the hidden costs. At least with the bmpcc cameras, you can record straight to a USB drive. As for the Sony car, I’d definitely be afraid of overheating 😂

Nice. I don’t use a RAW workflow so this camera might work for me. I just hate the loss of DPAF in 4K60fps
Danny Winget If you don’t mind the 1.3X crop, you can still use DPAF in 4K 60p. Same as the 1DX II ☺️

All fanboys look at pros and ignore the cons. Everyone does it with every purchase. "This car has great horsepower, but the gas mileage sucks", "This TV has the perfect picture but it doesnt transcode atmos over ARC", "This lens has crazy bokeh but the C.A. is very noticeable", "This chick Im about to marry isnt the hottest, but damn she's gonna be a great mother to our kids"....

I think the 1DX III is a baby C500 II. It shoots 12Bit RAW and full frame 4K. Even though it doesn’t do exactly 5.9K. But Full Frame 5.5K RAW is still pretty awesome already. Great video by the way ☺️☺️

Obviously depends on the needs but I don’t think these DSLR types will ever be a replacement for full cinema cameras. It’s tops that they’re getting closer and you have some nice features but cinema cameras offer their own suite of features
Good point on the CANON LOG on the 1DXiii. I was checking the white paper on this camera and it indeed says the CANON LOG is version 1 which is similar to the original C300 and C500 whereas the C200 has the same original CANON LOG + CANON LOG 3.
You said 1TB will get you an hour of record time. What codec is that? All-i 10bit DCK4k? 5.5k RAW? and is the RAW a Canon Raw or uncompressed raw?
Finally some canon codec that works with final cut pro x! Yea!

Thanks for the info it was looking really promising but in typical canon fashion they're short changing the video department. Still looking to hear about the af and the performance in 4k60 crop mode as well as rolling shutter performance and dynamic range
This Camera is a beast, it’s basically a great hybrid camera. Great for all sorts of shooting from sports, events, night life, and as video camera. It’s a brick that will take a kick! Fo me an “ All rounder “ shooting everything from Music videos to portrait, food , headshots, events. I think it’s a great choice. Low light strobe photography, night clubs and live shows. i just need to work out how to get the thing on a gimbal occassionally. I think most of us will be using the 10 bit 422 and not the raw, not to mention the 1080p is great. If you go Eos R the glass is great but costly, 1dx the body is expensive but you can get great bargains on ef glass. I’m leaning towards the 1dx mkiii for it’s robustness. I shot a music video with a mud restling scene last week I could have done with it then! 🤣

The 1dxiii looks interesting in terms of specs for photos and video, but its a DSLR, so I'm a bit iffy as I love the electronic viewfinder from the mirrorless
If you had to choose one FF hybrid camera (other than a Sony) what would it be?
I like the lexus LS, but I love the truck bed on a Toyota Tundra, so I bought the Tundra. If EVF is what you need, then dont even look at this cam
I'm currently leaning towards the Panasonic S1H. Waiting on the Sony a7S3, and the Sony FX6 to see what they bring. Hard to give up on the dream of their auto e-ND, which I doubt the a7S3 will have. No idea of cost of the FX6, sensor size, or AF performance. Hopefully all will be revealed by NAB in April.
i love mjpeg in 1dx ii can weee get c-log in the 1dxii and interval timer in the body. in norway is cf exsperss cost 1580$ for 512gb and the body is 9370 $. I don't see any reason to upgrade since I mostly do photo's with my 1dxii and some video.
Is it Raw 12bit 444? And how many Gbps does ti make?
Hi there . Can someone explain me the differences between these two kind of lights : 1 => the LED panels (for instance the neewer 660D)… 2 => the kind of lights like Aputure 120D / Godox SL60W (if it's any good). Right now there are plenty of videos saying "this one is the perfect one" for both of these kits, but impossible for me to understand why chosing this kind rather than this one.

High priced cameras like this approach the combined cost of an OK 2 camera setup. You could get both: 1) prosumer ,fixed lens video camera (with dual xlr inputs, dual sd, nd filters, real controls without annoying menus to scroll thru, and a par focal zoom lens to dream of with pretty good bokeh behavior, and better bit rate)........ and then also buy one of the many available: 2) decent photo cameras. Lotsa buyer options at this price point.
What about Davinci Resolve? Can't you open the RAW files with it?
Is a 3080 + 5900x + 32GB if Ram enough for this?

@@mondobytes That's true! Though the C200 processor should be capable of supporting 10 bit 4:2:2 if it can do 12 bit RAW right? It would just take them a fair bit more work and $$$
Andrew Phipps RAW is easier to record because it's less compressed, 10bit requires a lot more power which from what Canon has told me it just can't do it.

Well damn, you're saying what I figured out the other day.
It's a great camera but unless you already have the infrastructure it just has a lot of marketing hype built into it.
It's new features are for a very very very very small group like less than 100 ppl worldwide.
The vast majority of shooters (& remote rigs) are using it primarily for stills.
Even though it can shoot 1000+ raw+jpeg, those shooters unless private, those working with agencies like Getty are still shooting jpeg as primary b/c of the transfer speeds needed and minimal processing is priority #1.

2 underrated features of the D6, is the swipe up, and security cable (remote shooters).
I bet the 1Dx Mk iii users will drop down to 14 or even 12fps b/c the additional images while great unless Getty has hired more editors will actually slow them down. They mainly use Canon.
I'm waiting for fuji xt4. Hopefully it'll have IBIS.
Or 4k60 from sony or nikon with 10bit internal recording at 200mbps.

RE: C200 raw in FCPX. The latest version of Colour Finale is fantastic with C200 RAW. So good in fact I have stopped round tripping to Davinci.
It just bothers me you don't get RAW controls, the whole point of shooting RAW is to have ultimate flexibility and you lose that. I've been wanting to use FCPX more but that always stops me.
@@mondobytes I hear you. Honestly though, when I tried the new plugin that frustration fell away... at least for me anyway.
In regards to media, you have a point, but that's gonna be the same with the C500 MkII. In regards to everything else, I am quite sure that working with the DX III is way too cumbersome. No articulating screen, no viewfinder, no practical Vari-ND filter like I have on my EOS R (which is - by the way - only really usable in 4K cropped mode; hardly anybody mentions the aliasing and moiré in FF HD). By the way, did I mention that the one and only reason I touched a photo hybrid again is that super-mega-useful Vari-ND?
Kudos to Canon for making their Cine range so unique by designing their Hybrid models in a way that it's a challenge to work with those crippled devices in the video realm so nobody will ever regret buying the C500 Mk II ... which represents their only oversampling FF 4K video solution at the moment.

I think this very IDX is specifically made for professional photographers, and the media house will buy this camera for their staff due to price and cost after that. However, individuals should buy if it suits their purpose. Personally, it is a beautiful camera and tempting but guess l will buy EOS 90D that suit my purpose.
The old Canon EOS 1D C had a 12 hour recording limit.
Hi thank you this why I will try and get a 1D X or 1D X mark II and if I start to do Video I will do what you will do and get a C200 A or rent a C500 ie $15K and I am poor. Thank you your inside on the Canon Mark III.
They gave us some nice paper specs that I personally consider unusable on the real world.
I don't think it's crazy the FCPX will have the raw decoding early. If I remember correctly it had the C200 CRM decoding before Premiere did too.
I also don't think it's crazy that the FCPX plugin Canon made doesn't have a ISO or WB control. The color wheels built into FCPX have an exposure slider, saturation slider, and temp & tint controls that are pulling from the freshly debayered C-Log 2. I know I probably can't convince you to give FCPX another try, but I ask you keep a more open mind about it.
Great points. Many people only think about the upfront costs, but don't think about the cost of ownership. When you buy a car, there are other costs associated like oil change, insurance...etc. Same thing applies to high end cameras. I do have to say Canon is stealing Sony's thunder when it comes to videos. Where's that A7S III?
His main gripe seems to be that it doesn't have the same codecs and clog options as Canon Cinema cameras. Well guess what, it's not a cinema camera.

I honestly didnt know the C log was different between cameras. I wish it was called something different for clarity (like V-Log l). This camera is crazy.

The main advantage of a C200 is it's ergonomics, way better than 1Dx3, it's not a competitions at all.

Armando, thank you for the facts about the camera rather than a hype video. I have a question though. Everyone else, feel free to pile on if you feel a need.
So Canon introduces a DSLR camera (which according to CIPA DSLR sales/usage is dwindling - 16,200,000 in 2012 to 7,596,000 in 2017) that is basically the same design as the 1DXII (which was released in 2016), AND has a potential total cost of ownership of around 10K (love that you looked at TCO rather than just the cost of the camera)...okay, here is my question. Why would any photographer/videographer who is financially responsible and future proofing their digital ecosystem buy this camera? Now I get that it is Canon and there are the Canon fanboys just like I am a Panasonic fanboy, but seriously, forget the hype, sponsorships, etc. WHY would someone shell out that kind of money when there are equal if not better options at a lower cost?
AND with a huge swing toward videography in 2019-2020, this camera still has some shortcomings in the video capacity...seriously, 2020?, $6500 and the camera can only record thirty minutes of video and only ten minutes at 120 fps? Ya, okay, I can buy a $1000-$2000 external recorder...doh...just spent more money (Up to about $12,000 to do something that the new Panasonic S1H can do at $4000. Not saying the S1H is the cat's meow, but for the $8000 savings, I can do a lot.

Doug Zauha I think the New Canons are fulfilling what the professionals actually need and use on a daily basis very well. If you need more than this then you already know that. If it’s more than you need then at least it’s a low enough price to feel within reach.
The cost difference between this and other options (Panasonic) is more than made up for on the lenses. Most of the people that will buy this camera already have a collection of thousands of dollars worth of EF lenses. Well more invested there than the price of the camera body.
The only thing I think they got wrong is not allowing over 30 min of record time. I see absolutely no reason for them to use that to distinguish a dslr from their cinema options.
You generate a great point and this further emphasizes my comment on why they should've made this camera an RF mount as well. But as we all know Canon likes to live in the past. They need to recognize that they're as much of a tech company as a camera company. And when you dont move forward and fast in tech, then you're left behind. And this is coming from someone who has owned canon cameras for 20 years. Not that I would switch cuz that wouldn't make sense financially but I really wish the company made better decisions when it comes to their camera bodies. I have faith that they will bounce back in 2020 with their announcement of the eos R2 and their glorious rf mount lineup, but only time will tell.

Polyphony Digital (developers of Gran Turismo) and by proxy Sony have actually worked with multiple manufacturers to develop insane concept cars. You should check them out if you havent! Google “Gran Turismo Vision” to see what they have been doing!!!

Once you buy the over priced cards (C-fast anyone?), as a film maker, I can't get behind a $7,700 camera that shots only short bursts of video. You can get a RED used (or any other camera for that matter) for much cheaper and get better usage and more for your money.
It's definitely a hard pull to swallow and there's more flexible options for sure.

A lot of the later part of this video also applies to a C200.
Didier Brival Not really, the C200 has storage options that are way cheaper than the 1DX Mark III. It's a lot more manageable too.

ok,so $6500 body..+$1500 glass?.+512GB CF Express= $600x2...so if you get 4 cards,that is ..6500+2400+1500,and then you might want strap system and a flash unit..Make sure you have a 15K minimum budget ready...Hope you already have a monster workstation,another backup workstation,2 NAS or RAID server setups,and an offsite storage spot..
