This version of the song was recorded by my late Father's band "The Yetties". He was Pete Shutler the accordionist. I miss him still every day nearly 10 years after his passing. May he Rest in Peace and may the Golden Wyvern of Wessex ever fly proud. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Fond memories of the Yetties first met them in early 1960s at folk dance at George Hotel Crewkerne before they turned professional

It's not a turnip plant. It's a Turnip Clamp.( A Gurt heap of Turnips stored for winter feed.]

Thanks Mike, that solves a puzzle of mine. From memory of listening to the Yetties, I always thought it was “turniclap”, or maybe “turniclamp” which is easier to say. I should have asked my friend Bob Gale who wrote it. We lived in Harlow then, and he died about the 80’s or 90’s. He was nicknamed “Cream” because he came from Dorset.

My grandmother from Dorset claims that its 'with a tear in his eye' instead of 'as we went strolling by', and that its 'turnip patch'.

Anyone know anything about this song? I think it’s to the same tune as The Nightengale

Based loosely on the song 'The Sweet Nightingale'. Another comic version was performed in 1973 by Johnny Silvo and Dave Moses at the Gibralter folk festival. I don't think it was ever officially recorded. I recorded it on a reel to reel from the BBC 'Folk 73' show with Tony Capstick. Hope this helps.

Written by Bob Gale from Dorset, and recorded by the Yetties.

The Sweet Nightingale mentioned by Geoff Rouse is a totally different tune. It’s almost identical to The Nightingale, as you said.
