“Never to drink Anya” because I’ve never dranken nor do I plan too. So kiiinda counterintuitive to comment BUT lll be up for some fun!
“Put him in a bed with the captain’s daughter” sounds pretty tame, almost like reward. This is until you find out captain’s daughter was a euphemism for a Cat-o-nine-tails; a multi thronged whip with barbs at the end.
I always figured it implied what the captain would do when he found out.

It *is* a nickname for that particular implement for that. But there’s also the contemporary conception of pirates and privateers having a penchant for strong-willed women with wild libidos. Especially since they tended to fraternize with sex workers often enough. So with that context in mind, a captain’s actual daughter might refer to a woman among the crew that would have voracious appetites in bed, almost to the point of aggression. The drunk sailor in question would be forced to perform until utterly exhausted and thereby “unmanned”. He’d basically be forced into the woman’s position of sexual submission. It’s a terrible insult.
Yeeeah, that sounds like a case of 'the literal application would tend to lead to the figurative one'.

Drunken Sailor and My Mother Told Me are probably my two favorite sea shanties, and now they've both been sung by one of the Big Three Irish singers/groups. (Colm, Enya and The Cranberries).

I might be wrong, but I’m fairly certain that Drunken Sailor is an English language parody of the Irish clan march folk tune, “oro se do bheatha bhaile” - which is highly recommended if you enjoy Drunken Sailor.
What I love about this song is that it can be literally every emotion you need.
Angry? Shout it!
Sad? Sing it slow.
Creepy? Have a child sing it without a backing track.
Confused? Humn the second half of the lyrics like you forgot them, and let the backingtack handle the chorus for you.

"Creepy", it really is. If you listen to the Tiger Lillies version it can also be a downright monstrous horror show killer sailor who commits every crime but just gets tossed back on the ship instead of prison.
Your voice feels like what people thought Fair Folks sounded like. It itches the brain in such a wonderful way that I cannot, no matter how I try to, translate into words.

I hate to nitpick, but I'm pretty sure that's a concertina. It's played in a somewhat similar way, but there are many key differences, the most obvious being the fact that the concertina is far more portable, and as such, was usually found aboard ships. That's why the sound of the concertina is so often associated with sea shanties.

OK before I even START this song I wanna make it clear: This song has a TON of lyrics. Ranging from ones you know like "Put'em in a long boat till he's solver." to ones you probably didn't even know were real like "Tie'em to the mast like a jolly roger." and it because of this it IS one of my favorites along side wellerman.
