But…Reluctant Heroes I’ve been hoping for for years (by the many many comments I’ve left 😅). I mean, the Barbie Song of ALL things got covered before it…and that was just so, so horrifying 🙃

Fun fact the captains daughter in this song refers not to an actual person but rather the whip the captain uses on the crew
If memory serves, it's a cat o' nines. Which is even worse than a regular whip, if we're talking about the version that was meant for torture and had barbs on the lashes.
That explains a lot! here I was thinking the poor woman waking up in the morning to find a stranger in her bed and goes like "oh man again!"
For this shanty, probably not, if the captain found them, the whip would be less problematic
There’s several lines that follow on from the captain’s daughter line, from a version by Derina Harvey, “she looks like an orang-utan” and “there she goes swinging through the rigging” hardly the woman I’d want to be waking up to!! I’m thinking the whole song is a make it up as you go with several stock lines.

Being a complete metal head with an intense love for pirates I've fallen in love with this, also people say due to my English accent I sound very close to a pirate rather than a royal navy sailor, guess my love for them has tainted me

Before the Wellerman became popular, this was the only one _everybody_ knew. As for how many knew of the hilarious alternate lyrics by British children’s author/poet Allan Ahlberg (What Shall We Do With The Grumpy Teacher), I can’t really say. I, for one, was fortunate enough as a child to know the alternate lyrics _before_ the original ones.

I love the deepness of the beginning. bass vocals are rather rare. And I love the contrast it creates between the high and low. I have really grown to appreciate very high and very low vocals in music.

This has long been one of my favorite sea shanties. My kid and I used to sing it together and event new verses, just trying to make the song as silly as it could be.
