Thanks, i had to use one of these specific can openers for the first time in 30 years and since the wheel was so rusty on the three available i figured that coudnt be the part to routinely touch the preserved food.

This inexpensive type of can opener is recommended for travellers who don't want to carry those larger, heavier models of can openers in their luggage. The less often you need to use a butterfly type can opener, the longer it will last.
Be aware that butterfly can openers manufactured decades ago were more durable, all metal and with no plastic. They seldom broke and could last a lifetime, even passed down from generation to generation.
Unfortunately, more recently-made butterfly can openers are cheaply made--their weakest point being the circular piece of plastic attached to the spinner. After many uses, that piece of plastic will crack or wear down thereby creating a gap which prevents the gear and cutter from firmly gripping the edge of the can, thereby making it impossible to open a can quickly and smoothly as it is supposed to do.
However, for those who care to make the effort, here is a quick fix which can extend the life of a butterfly can opener when that piece of plastic fails. Admittedly, this may be a last resort if you do not possess a backup can opener.
    1) Using a standard 6-inch (15 cm) twist-tie of the type commonly used to seal household garbage bags, strip away the paper or plastic surrounding the wire itself. If this cannot be done easily by hand, light a match and carefully burn the paper or plastic away until only the bare wire remains. Allow the wire to cool.
    2) Next, wrap the bare twist-tie wire tightly around and BENEATH the circular piece of plastic and tie it in a knot twice to prevent it from coming loose but not so tight that the spinner cannot be turned comfortably.
    3) This knotted wire will force the circular piece of plastic beneath the spinner to stay more firmly into position thereby allowing the can opener to operate properly again when you attach it to the can and turn the spinner. By trial and error, this technique will save you the time and trouble of having to borrow or inconveniently go shopping for a new can opener when that option may not be a practical, particularly at a time when, for example, you really need to open that can for a meal.
Note: when visiting flea markets, be on the lookout for those older model butterfly can openers that are ALL METAL with NO PLASTIC. Just make sure they are not so so old nor so loose and without a gap that would prevent a firm grip to open a can. Good luck.
The recommended BEST can opener for HOME USE: the EZ-DUZ-IT model. See it on UA-cam.

It is also possible to open it with the blade cutting the outside wall of the can rather than the lid. This is actually easier and makes a cleaner cut with no residual rim, and you don't spill the liquid so much while cutting because the pressure is down towards the centre rather than at the side. I believe these can openers were designed to be used this way, and what the video shows is a mistake that is very easy to make. I did it like that for years and it was often a messy disaster. Now I always do it the other way.

These cheap multi-openers last longer if You rotate/crank the handle while* clamping down with gentle force. The blade will cut into and drive itself into the metal and You won't bend anything after opening only 40-50 cans.
