- MOANIN, The Song That Changed My Life, Jazz Piano Tutorial
Performance and tutorial of the famous jazz/ blues song written by Bobby Timmons. .This video was released again because of a copyright issue. The copyright people believed that the out music was Ahmad Jamal playing, and actually it was Kent Hewitt...that's how close he was to the master. The outgoing music has been changed. If you are watcfhing it again please leave original comment that you posted. It is now monitized. Go to website to view book that details the concepts explained. www.kenthewitt...
PS; it’s so great to hear this played and described the proper way.
Thanks so much for the affirmation!
Your series of videos represents an entire legacy of jazz history and tradition. What a great contribution you have made. Forever grateful!
Greatest of comments...a millions thanks... and always swing loose!
Thank you so much! these tutorials are like therapy!
Glad you think so...thanks!
Great video! I really love the style of Bobby Timmons, his playing is really something special and super underrated, in my opinion. Would you consider ever doing some kind of video that goes over the styles of multiple jazz pianists (including Timmons) and showing what makes them all so unique?
Thanks for the comment and request. You can also check out my playlists because I have made videos about a number of great jazz pianists.

Swing loose, Maestro! Love to Herbie the cat! Wish he could meet my beautiful Snowy cat who's been given a reprieve by the vet from what we thought was a very serious illness......just goes to show what playing a little piano to her and lots of love can do... and... YES!....Prayer! I guess that's why I got to love Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers so much and naturally Art Blakey and co. with that mixture of jazz/blues/gospel/swing etc it goes to the very soul. Btw I once studied Business & Finance and Law etc but wish I'd gone to Music College. I also served in the military but if I could go back in time and join a military band - some of my fav musicians in Britain served in the forces, in the bands of the Guards, etc.
Thanks for sharing your story...you are my brother...love and respect. Always swing loose.
As funky as it gets!
Apprecaited!

This song is the definition of cool to me. When the B section hits in wow that's cool. Another tune like this with the blues over the swing feel is Timeline by Pat Metheny and Mike Brecker.

I had a similar experience. Studied engineering and was drawn into soul music by guys like Ray Charles and Billy Preston's nothing from nothing. Love the soulful stuff. Thanks for all the great content through the years!

Great tune. Great playing! Love whenever you bring Herbie in. I have 8 cats now and most are black and whites. Love them all soooo…much. I have a new stray, came here a couple of months ago starving. All better now. Vets, fixed, all shots, plenty of food and most of al LOVE!! He follows me everywhere and likes to sleep on top. Of my old vintage Rhodes. So I put the top on and gave it to him. I found a Roland like yours and also picked up Yamaha P515. And I have my 6foot Boston grand. So having something to play on is never an issue. Keep swinging my brother

Could not agree with you more Kent! Was also pivotal in my discovery of jazz. The tension of the blues-abandon combined with the depths-of-your-soul changes in the bridge are among the most expressive in Hard Bop. Blakey version with full complement of solos is mind-blowing every time. Many Thanks for giving this gem its due!

Hooray! I finally was able to buy your book. I had a lot of trouble with Apple Pay and I finally gave up on it and used the pp link. It worked! Downloading now-very happy to get it. I got the book and its appendices. I REALLY enjoy your videos. I am a guitar player and now I am very interested in jazz piano.

greetings from terrorist state? lol
Herbie is the best cat!
LOVE this, KH!! The song/record that changed MY life was JUST BE OURSELVES by Dreams (1972) - amazing tune that made me hear things very differently! 🎵🎶
ua-cam.com/video/oJAJF02WB90/v-deo.html ❤
Moanin' is the best, as is the K.H., of course!
As for "just be ourselves," yeah! Great tune, coincidentally I was playing around with it on the piano yesterday. Local Chicago-style horn band I was in played it for a while at gigs just out of high school, as you said about 1972!
Dreams really was the start of my gravitation toward loving "real jazz :)" ---too bad they only made 2 albums.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the comment!
If I ever get time...I'll check it out...thanks!
Wow that was cool.
Thanks so much!
Please make a simple jazz improvisation of Moaning...thanks
Thanks for the request!
Can I ask; what are the two passing chords in bar 4 of the bridge going into the Bb min 9, at about 7:24 in this video? It sounds SO good!
Cm7-B7alt...just chromatic passing chords to the Bbm7.
thank you!
My pleasure!
Hey Kent. Have you ever covered My One And Only Love by Coltrane? I think that would be a beautiful song under your hands.
Great song. Thanks for the request. Go here for my complete list:

Beautiful version, thanks Kent. As a guitarist before studying piano I first heard this from Ronnie Earl. If you don’t know it it’s worth checking out. i just become a subscriber tô your channel . Thanks again
Thanks for the info!
Love you much
Many thanks!
Hi kent!, i dont know you, but i love you man! im touched by your story that you were a banker.
Thanks for telling me...it was a big sacrifice.
Hello dear Kent, been a fan for a while and was wondering if you ever plan on covering Louis Primas I ain't got nobody, been in love with this tune for a while and would love to learn it myself but I am an amateur. Either way Love your work hope you keep on pushing that knowledge out to the world good sir.
I haved heard the song. What makes you attracted to it? It's not a jazz standard...more a pop tune...but I very good one.
This version is great, thanks. Is there a reason why Ray Bryant's version is rarely cited ?
Ray Bryant is not that well known....it's too bad...I agree...he was great.
The sheet music for moanin on your site is this version you are playing ?
I never play a song literally from scores...however the score on my website is close to what I'm playing.
Hello.
I love your jazz method, and I propose it to my students.
But what do you think about the John Mehegan's method.?
Is it also important to study this technics too ?
Thank for your answer
Yes, I studied with John and have his books. He was the premier teacher in the 50's and 60's He taught Chick Corea and many others. His book only had chord changes...no melodies...which is different from mine. I think mine is more up to date and practical ...that's my pitch.
Really?
