A very humble yet effective teacher. One who gives so freely without any pretence. I'm a jazz pianist & yet I've gained much. Respect Tony. It is a pity the UA-cam algorithm doesn't give your videos the attention it deserves.

FANTASTIC lesson here. I learned this tune awhile back with my jazz teacher and found this to really help in several ways:
    1. Very straightforward breakdown of all scales and sections.
    2. Really helpful tips in various places, like using G pent over the C maj 7 and avoiding those Fs and roots.
    3. Excellent explanation of diminished scale applications.
Approach to diminished scales has more depth than most similar materials and shows ho important this is to practice. Thanks for putting this up, and especially the study guide materials. All of the demonstrations and materials make the concepts very clear and are right on point to clarify stuff I've learned in the past.
This is really fun stuff and enjoyable to learn this way.

i am an aspiring jazz pianist.
I wanted to get used to all the dissonance of the chords and the spice of jazz and realised that I haven’t heard enough.
who are the pianists i can listen while beginning this journey?!

When you use a pentatonic scale for the cmaj7 that is not a C pentatonic, it is a G pentatonic scale. Otherwise this is great!

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  4 роки тому +1

Yes, G penta is correct , thanks for catching the error.

Yet another great video, Tony! I hope this comment finds you after so much time has elapsed since you made this video, but I have a question.
You play an Ab scale over the Gm7b5 chord of the 1st ii-V-I. Is that dictated by the presence of the b5? Can you therefore play all b5 passages by using the major scale of the chord a half-tone above (like Ab is a half-tone above G)? Or does it only apply to ii-V-I situations?
I find these relationships very intriguing, like, how you can keep going up by minor 3rds, even on the more complex "box" chords, and have it still retain its sound.

  • @electricjazzpiano

Hey really appreciate your videos, this is my first comment since you since you said you like reading comments for ideas.
Do you have any advice on playing ideas with just the mixolydian scale over the dominant 7 chord? I can improvise a bit using the chord tones, but I'm not that good of using or thinking of the basic diatonic modes when I improvise.
I haven't even started to try improvising using the altered scale, should I just start with the altered scale ideas here anyway?

In the last 20-30 seconds of this video, you're moving a lot of chords in a melodic fashion (block style). Are these drop 2 voicings or something else? Thanks as always for the great lessons.
