Very well played. The sound, the tempo, the balance... Everything is fine around Bach.

Was denkt J. S. Bach ueber dieser Text!! Assured, spritely, delightful, buoyant! This dances! And why not, if you believe the text?! Thank you, Kay Johannsen und Stiftsbarock Stuttgart, for this heavenly performance! Fine musicians! Fine interpretation! You express the music's exuberance! I wish we had this text in English with the same direct force that the German communicates. Danke, danke sehr!

Bach once stated his choruses should have a minimum of four on a part, as we see here. But doesn't that indicate he would have ideally preferred a few more?

We do not know this, and we have to consider that we know almost nothing about Bachs opinions and ideas of sound. But we have his music and it is always a good way to try to find a good balance between all parts in the score (voices and instruments). For us and in our room (the Stiftskirche) it works well with 16 professional singers and strings 3/3/2/2/1. But other conductors may find other solutions - that's fine. In Stuttgart we perform Bach also with the Stuttgarter Kantorei (70-80 well educated singers) or twice a year in a open project with about 150 singers and 50 musicians in the orchestra. The most important thing for me is that as much people as possible can enjoy Bachs music.

@@kayjohannsen8959 why would we need more? Oh that JSB would have had such wonderful musicians! My congratulations to these sensitive, expert musicians! I've listened to this recording about 12 times in a row. It transports me and uplifts me!

@@kayjohannsen8959 Dear Kay: I was one of your colleagues for the Haenssler Edition Bach Akademie (I recorded vols 104 & 111 (Toccatas & Concerto Arrangements). Also know Bill Porter very well (as I live in Cambridge, MA). I just wanted to express here my appreciation for all these fine videos, which indicate such a very high standard, and reflect many of my own ideals of Bach interpretation in tempo, articulation, affekt, etc. I was from the start a big admirer of your own Haenssler contributions, which includes what is still my absolute favourite version of the Trio Sonatas. For my own part, since the Haenssler days, I am just completing all of Bach's harpsichord works, with the Goldberg Variations and Kunst der Fuge as the final volumes. Best regards from Cambridge, MA.
