Birds and other animals look for “honest indicators” of positive traits that will affect the offspring. While this may be visual (bright plumage is sexy) there’s a lot of other methods, depending on the species. Loud, rhythmic mating calls? “I’ve got strong lungs and great breathing control!” Complex dances? “I’m fit and have great motor skills!” Gifts of food and shinies? “I’m smart and I can forage/hunt like a pro!” Nest-building? “I can keep our babies safe!” Humans can be attracted to any of these traits, because we don’t have just one mating ritual. You can attract a partner with a healthy body, a quick mind, a creative spirit _or_ a skillful hand. 😉
this made me realize another reason I wouldn't be good at comedy, I would just be like "yeah yeah the cloacal kiss" and there wouldn't be any jokes lol

@GianmarcoSoresi When you learned about the birds and the bees, they didn't tell the truth! They never explained how birds do it! Now we have to find out how bees do it!
Female bees are diploid (have two copies of each chromosome), but male bees are haploid (have one copy of each chromosome). Because of this, sisters are 75% related to one another (100% same genes from dad, 50% from mom), unlike most species where siblings are 50% related. It's thought that the extra relatedness from this sex determination system contributes to how common it is for ants, bees, and wasps to be eusocial (living in colonies with sterile workers and one or a few reproductive females).
Many birds and other animals look for “honest indicators” of health and fitness that will affect the offspring. While this may be visual (bright plumage is sexy) there’s a lot of other factors, depending on the species. I went camping last weekend and there was this dang owl hooting until sunrise. It went "woo. hoo. woohoo". Very staccato and then a woohoo like a drunk fratboy cowboy. It was the goofiest pokemon I've ever encountered in real life, it kept me up all night because I couldn't stop laughing everytime it hooted sounding like mario taking shots.

On October 26th 2023, Gianmarco wrote on his Instagram story: "To be clear, I've never expressed an interest in parrots. I'm not into pirates. Frankly, I'd be fine if all birds died"
Many birds have programmed cell death that prevents the formation of a penis or heavily stunts it (see chickens). The 'penis' on a duck is not a penis at all but actually the cloacal wall grown out into an extension. They developed it because it helps funnel the sperm so it doesn't get diluted in the water.

Crows pick mates on loyalty. It's a really important trait among crow culture, what with the murders and everything.
