Birds and other animals look for “honest indicators” of positive traits that will affect the offspring. While this may be visual (bright plumage is sexy) there’s a lot of other methods, depending on the species.
Loud, rhythmic mating calls? “I’ve got strong lungs and great breathing control!”
Complex dances? “I’m fit and have great motor skills!”
Gifts of food and shinies? “I’m smart and I can forage/hunt like a pro!”
Nest-building? “I can keep our babies safe!”
Humans can be attracted to any of these traits, because we don’t have just one mating ritual. You can attract a partner with a healthy body, a quick mind, a creative spirit _or_ a skillful hand. 😉

Female bees are diploid (have two copies of each chromosome), but male bees are haploid (have one copy of each chromosome).
Because of this, sisters are 75% related to one another (100% same genes from dad, 50% from mom), unlike most species where siblings are 50% related.
It's thought that the extra relatedness from this sex determination system contributes to how common it is for ants, bees, and wasps to be eusocial (living in colonies with sterile workers and one or a few reproductive females).

Many birds have programmed cell death that prevents the formation of a penis or heavily stunts it (see chickens). The 'penis' on a duck is not a penis at all but actually the cloacal wall grown out into an extension. They developed it because it helps funnel the sperm so it doesn't get diluted in the water.
