      Gordon Laing Gordon what is your take on using the lense on a a7iii? Is there any difference to a aps c sensor?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  4 роки тому

      @@martinhain remember this is only corrected for the APSC area, so if you use it on a full-frame body in full-frame mode, then the edges will almost certainly go very dark and blurry. There may also be a strong vignette as I demonstrated in my 16-55mm f2,8 review. You could switch the camera to APSC / Super 35 mode to record in an APSC crop, but you would lose a lot of resolution for photos. it's fine for video, but a big drop for photos.

    This is a superb lens. I bought one specifically to use on my Sony A7Rii as an alternative to my 200-600mm G on an A7iii which is a massive, heavy, and cumbersome rig. The A7Rii plus 70-350mm G is as light as a feather, the crop mode yields an effective 525mm focal length and an 18.667 MP image that is as sharp as anything I've ever seen on any body-lens combination. I just love this combo.

    Another wonderful review by the master of reviewers, Gordon Laing! Thanks so much, Gordon. I have the Sony A6600 and am committed to the APSC size (A6---) due to the small size of the body and lenses. I believe this really is the perfect travel zoom for sports/nature, etc. The price will eventually go down.

    Thanks, Gordon for this review!
    I am thinking of getting an A6400 soon. Price in our country just dropped to U$865 (inclusive of tax). This will be a good lens for action and that body, as you mentioned in the last part, ,without breaking the bank. I do think this should cost maybe U$850 at most, but then again, it's new, maybe in time it will drop in price. I have the 55-210 and it's not just IQ (not bad but not stellar either), but the AF speed and reach is not enough for me. it was part of the nex-5t kit so I had that lens.
    I have the a7-3, but the main advantage of aps-c is the reach. This is effectively around 525mm at the longest end! Yes, the price is steep, but then again if the other options are more expensive. And heavier. And bulkier! So, I may have this on my sights in the future. A 10-18, 28-135/28-105 + 70-350 would make a good trio. Not really great at low light, but usable. Maybe a 50 f1.8 or 35 f1.8 or a laowa f2.0/2.8 prime could make up for the low light deficiency.
    If one have no plans to go 35FF, this is a good lens to have + 2-3 other lenses. Tamron might announce a 70-180 next month. But without LIS, and an a6400, it will be difficult to hand-hold. Even the a6500/a6600 isn't that good with their IBIS, not especially if you start going over 80mm. So, this lens should be good for aps-c. Not everybody needs this, and the price is not exactly enticing, but this is a good lens to have. The other one would be the 200-600, but that is U$1,000 more, is big, heavy too boot. You must be true-blue birder to own that and an a6400!

      I have recently bought an A6400 so feel I can comment. The Tamron certainly looks like a good lens but at 800g it's pretty heavy for an everday lens. Also 35mm may not be wide enough for a lot of situations. I use the Sony SELP18105G which is half the weight at 400g and from most places also half the price. Very happy with it as an all round lens and just keep a prime in my bag for low light situations or if I know I'll be taking mainly portraits.

    May I ask: 1) Since they removed the focus limiter switch on the 70-350mm (vs the 70-300mm), does the A6100 have a way to change this focus limiting ? e.g. for filming through a fence. I haven't yet found it in the manual.
    2) I have a Sony VCL-DH1758 1.7x post-lens Tele Converter (58 dia). Will the 70-350 (67 dia) accept the
    mount of the 1.7x tele with a 67-58mm step down ring ? I don't mind a little vignetting since I do post. Tks, Rob

    I own the FE 70-300 on an APSC. I´d love to see a comparison. I might switch as long as both have about the same image quality because the 70-350 means less weight and more focal length. But I assume the 70-300 is the better lens if you look at image quality.

    • @adamabele785
      @adamabele785 4 роки тому

      @Zzzz oop I also found out that the minimum focus distance is 1,5 meters compared to the 90 cm which is a dealbreaker to me, because I sometimes use it to shoot bugs on the floor or do macro shots.

    • @adamabele785
      @adamabele785 4 роки тому

      @Zzzz oop It has some downsides besides that. The teleconverters don´t work with this lens (probably the same with the 70-350), they work with the "white" lenses only. The setup with the APSC camera gets very front heavy. You still can use it handheld but the keeper rate gets much better with a tripod with the longer focal lengths. However, the standard ball head that came with the tripod was not able to manage the angular momentum properly, because it is so out of balance. It lacks the extra mounting device the 70-200 has. And I found it is not much of use in low light conditions, so after sunset, it stays in the bag. I use it for landscape photography from the top of mountains, towers etc. I also found the manual focus is sometimes better than autofocus when it come to distant objects. I use it for portraits. I like the natural face expression people have, so I shoot from a distance of some meters, when people are unaware, I don´t get in the face directly, I also don´t like direct eye contact on photos or staged photos with unnatural smiles or that stupid selfies you have seen 10 billion times (time for selfies to go out of fashion). However, I do show the photos afterward and people usually like the results. Sometimes they do criticize their own wrinkles, but I do accept it as part of human nature, in fact, I think wrinkles give a face more character so I like lighting that brings out the wrinkles. The main emotion a human has gets engraved after some decades. I´d never criticize somebody because of wrinkles, so why do they that to themselves? You can separate nicely from the background with this lens. You might even take a zoomed-in photo just of the eye region. I am very satisfied with the overall picture quality and sharpness of the lens. Professional photographers might like a lens that is just a tiny bit soft like a fast prime lens like an 85 mm wide open, just to make the face look a bit smoother, but that is just not how I do portraits.

      You mean for the FE 70-300mm? I'll try to find out.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  4 роки тому +4

      Here you go: the E 70-350mm and FE 70-300mm both have variable maximum apertures depending on their focal length, so here’s how they compare as you zoom-in. Between 70 and 100mm both lenses share the same f4.5 focal ratio, with both closing a little to f5 at 100mm. The E 70-350mm stays at f5 until you reach 135mm at which point it closes to f5.6, but the FE 70-300mm maintains f5 for longer, only closing to its minimum aperture of f5.6 between 200 and 300mm. 200mm is also the point at which the E 70-350mm closes to its minimum aperture of f6.3, maintaining this value until 350mm. So from 135 to 300mm, the FE 70-300mm enjoys a one third of a stop advantage in aperture over the E 70-350mm, but this will only have a minimal impact on light-gathering and potential for a shallower depth-of-field.

      Gordon Laing thank you for your time Gordon, I appreciate it. From what I understood both lenses have pro and cons compared to each other. In the end it comes down to future ff use (70-300) and general “friendliness” on aps-c body (70-350).

      I understand the benefit of being able to switch between full-frame and cropped modes BUT if we're only judging the A7r IV as an APSC camera, then it's a LOT more expensive than an A6400 or A6600, while only offering 2 extra Megapixels which would be imperceptible in practice. Great review. I have just completed selling all of my Canon equipment which included a 7D Mark-2 body and a 100-400mm f/4.5-6.8 IS ii lens. In order to decide if I wanted to replace the Canon 100-400 with a Sony 100-400mm or 200-600mm, I reviewed how much used the Canon lens. The answer was very infrequently because of its size and weight. The Canon 7D2 and 100-400mm combination weighs 5.6 pounds. I decided to purchase the 70-350mm lens to use on my A6400 in tandem with my A7iii wearing a 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. The A6400 and 70-350mm lens weighs only about 2.2 pounds.
    I am losing 50mm on the long side but gaining 30mm on the shorter end. I am losing a half stop of light at the long end but, the Sony package is about 3.4 pounds lighter... I can live with the focal length and smaller aperture to more than cut the weight in half. No problem that the 70-350mm lens only fits on a crop camera - I onu used the Canon 100-400mm on my crop sensor 7D Mark2

      You've made a very sensible decision - so many of us buy what we think we want, but not what we actually need or will actually use. The 100-400 lenses are lovely, but are also big and heavy. The same applies to the Sony version. If you want something really long, the new 200-600 is pretty amazing, but again very large. the 70-350 is an extremely portable lens for the money and gives you a lot of reach in a small barrel.

      summonedfist absolutely correct. It’s often no benefit buying from the US. It’s hit and miss. This lens was a surprise at the time, but now there’s only about a $200 difference then shipping and duties. Bit of background... I shot with Canon gear for years and liked the 100-400mm f/4.6-5.6L IS II lens but looking back, I did not use that lens often enough because of the size and weight to justify the more than two grand investment in the lens. Switching to Sony, I decided not to buy the 100-400mm or 200-600mm because I didn't think I would use these that often either for the same reasons I didn't use the Canon - size and weight.. However, I purchased the Sony 70-350mm lens to basically replace the Canon 100-400mm. It is 50mm shorter but 30mm wider. It is about a half stop slower at max focal length but I can live with that. I can only use it in a crop format but, I always used the Canon 100-400mm on my crop 7D Mark II. The reason I purchased the lens is that it is significantly smaller than either the Sony 100-400mm or 200-600mm, weighs less than half of what the 100-400mm weighs and one third of what the 200-600mm weighs additionally, it costs 40% of the price of the 100-400mm and about 50% the price of the 200-400mm....
    I can live with its shortcomings because of the weight and price.

    The lens is designed for cameras with APS-C sensor size but at its shortest focal lengths this lens has a full frame image circle and can be used on cameras with full frame sensor size without the need of post image cropping.
    That is not unique with Sony APS-C e-mount lenses. One example is the APS-C Sony 10-18mm f/4 which can be used on full frame cameras
    without image cropping at its shorter focal lengths.
    This type of lens is good for discreet street photography too. At 350mm (525mm 35mm equivalent) the photographer is far away and hardly any person will realize that is taken a photo. Additionally at 350mm even with f/6.3 there is a significant shallow depth of field and bokeh.
    This lens is by far smaller and more discreet than equivalent full frame lenses.
    With daylight the f/6.3 isn't an issue. With poor early morning or afternoon lighting even with an efficient internal image stabilization the small aperture demands a serious increase of ISO.
    All sensor stabilization mechanisms don't work very efficiently with long focal lengths and that's why nearly all long telephoto lenses have internal image stabilization.

    Thank you very much Gordon. Some hesitations pulling me back from purchasing this lens - the varying and relatively slow aperture of f4.5-5.6, so f5.6 at the long end is merely useless at low light conditions and for stopping some moving subjects, like a car or even water drops. At this price point I would expect more impressive specs. The depth of field and background separation is less of a problem, especially at the telephoto end. I want telephoto lens that could give me the option of shooting moving subjects, from the bus/boat on a trip, stopping movement of rain drops, etc...Also maybe some birding photography and an option for some low light photos. So I think I'll give up on this lens and get a more expensive fe 70-200 f4 - yes, it has compromises, like the shorter focal range, and also the f4 aperture is not very fast, but it is constant through the entire range, and don't get dark like f5.6 at the long end
