- Today we review the amazing new Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS. A great mid range telephoto that comes highly recommended. Better performing than the full frame 70-300mm, the 70-350mm boasts a smaller and lighter form factor as well as the advantage of the newest technology!

Great to see Sony not forgetting about their APS-C shooters. This thing is awesome!
The good thing also, you can use this lens on a full frame body in APS mode. I have the a7iii, and the 18-200. It works great on that camera in crop mode!
Great test on this lens, I love it thanks for share !
I have a sony a6300 with a 18-105 f4, and i want buy an telephoto and I really hesitate between the 70-350 in apsc or then the 70-200 f4 full frame which would make me a 105-300mm .... Which would you advise me? (mainly sports photos)
Thanks a lot
@@jpphotography5772 hey if you haven't decided you can reach out on Instagram @mtruproductions I shoot sports w/the a6400
Sony just dropped a video, looks like e mount is long way from getting abandoned.
@@standhd This is a super old comment, but I had a question you might be able to answer if you see this. I'm between the sigma 100-400 and this lens as someone who wants to upgrade to full frame one day, but probably not in the near future. I'm trying to stick to FE glass because I want to have the lenses when I get an a7 camera one day, but I don't know if I need anything as massive as the 100-400. Do you think this lens still performs adequately in crop mode on a full frame camera? I know it's kind of silly to plan on using this on a full frame camera, but I definitely can't afford a gmaster, and I don't really want to buy 2 different thousand dollar telephoto lenses a few years apart.
Another great review thanks! Looks like a keeper
Best review. Literally answered all my questions and concerns.
Great reviews man. I think I very well may snag this one!
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Fantastic review. I really loved that eagle shot! Thank you.
I love my 70-350mm G lens and use on both the A6400 and A6600... Lightweight, fast focus and excellent image quality... A bit expensive but, nothing like the Sony 200-600mm or 100-400mm lenses... It's a whole lot lighter and smaller than those lenses also...
how would you rate the 200-600mm lens?
i am really happy that i found this review eventually. other reviewers lacked some actual sample footage (i think no one of them was so much interested in high zoom content themselves). only thing for me missing would have been some sports footage. thank you!
Awesome review mate!!
Thanks for the visit
I'll buy it, thanks for the great review.
Well done video! Thanks.
I think more and more the optical lenses for APS-C are getting better and better, it would soon match the quality of the FF lenses! I don’t need the Full Frame body anymore!
You make great videos, love the lighting, camera moves, and the choreography! And you sold me on this lens. I am currently shooting birds with the 18-200 and looking to upgrade.
Hope your channel grows!
Thanks Frank. It won't let you down!
I am getting one. Thank you
no nonsense comprehensive test, as always. Brilliant, one of the best reviewers on you tube.
Thanks man! Keeps me going
Great review, I appreciate that you included actual nature shots and video footage to show it off. Picked one up for $750 on B&H with the student discount for Black Friday to pair with my A6100, to upgrade from my 55-210. Can’t wait to try it out!
Hi mate, how you getting on with this lens on the A6100? I’m thinking of buying it!
@@oOoJonnyoOo I got this lens with a a6100 and it’s great! Super great outdoors
Heya Stefan, thanks a lot,
i was mixed between the sigma 100-400 and this sony,
but you definitely makes me going to the good choice now,
thanks for this great video very helpful ! :D
take a good care too =)
My cameras all came with zoom kit lens. And it took me some time to learn zooms are no match with primes in sharpness. And when you crop and enlarge, a sharp lens is essential to come up with a sharp photo.
Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo intéressante. Cordialement. Gérard
Spot on review. Great to see Sony offer a quality APS-C E-mount zoom lens. Only additional thing I would like to see is a focus limiter switch.
Andrew Jones thé price would be much higher!
This was a really great and helpful video ! :)
Thanks for that.
Do you happen to know at which focal length one can use which minimum aperture ?
I guess it would be really interesting and sadly nobody covers it in their reviews.
Noted. Ill start covering it. Its not a lot passed 70mm though..
I've ordered one to use on my A7Rii when I don't want to carry my 200-600mm with me.
Luv this lens. 👍
It's also a great lens for FF if you have enough MP, so it's great on the A1, A7R4, A7R3, even the A74.
Excellent review, Stefan. Now Sigma has come up with a 100-400 DN lens for sony bodies, could you please compare these two lenses and let us know which one is better suited for APS-C alpha series. Thanks.
Great review, any chance there is an option for a sun visor hood
I traded the 70-300 in on this lens and have been very happy with my decision. I used a A6500 with the 70-300 and had real issues getting a sharp photo at 300. Not with this one. Excellent review.
Good call! Best crop telephoto for Sony.
Paul and Stefan, I want to get this telephoto lens for bird photography but inside forests it would be low lighting so I’m wondering if the slow aperture would cancel the sharpness of this lens as I will likely have to handhold it to follow the bird’s movements.
@@akirahojo2 I use it for that but in Australia we have very harsh sunlight so it is not much of an issue. I was thinking of getting the new Tamron 75-180 2.8 for bird photography but we have just moved house so buying camera gear is off the agenda. I would lose a fair bit of zoom.
nice lens ,i heard this was coming out last year and was waiting to see a review on it, the price is good for a G series lens with OSS ,i would own this already if Sony made an adapter for it to fit my A77 MK 2 that is also APSC and does 20fps upto 60 or 80 shots , i love Sony Cameras they just sure do things in strange ways at times, all 3 of my Sony cameras have been reliable and decent battery life except when it is -30 outside things really change at those temps ,great review thanks
Thanks Bob! Cheers
I found one at 680€ and immediately pulled the trigger, now I’m waiting on my lens to arrive !!!
I want it!
Thanks bro
You bet!
Sold!
you should do value after performance
The review is spot on. I was impressed with the sharpness and it's consistency too. Great lens. What stops you from recommending it for pros? The slow aperture?
For the most part yes. It can produce professional images but full frame is going to give you the best results.
@@StefanMalloch there are many professionals using aps-c. Not everyone wants to walk through the mountains with a huge camera bag.
@@derTommy 100% agree with you! The gap of efficiency between apsc and fullframe is closing especially with modern apsc cameras like the A6700. That talk of full frame = professional only should be put to rest
What is your camera setup for birds in flight?
Thanks for important details with great job. I want to buy a 70-350 or 70-300 mmlens for my sony alpha a7 iii can you pleastell which one is better to buy?
If Sony would give us APS-C shooters a wide angle zoom to go with the 16-55 and the 70-350 I would be really happy.
10-18mm? 16mm Sigma?
i will by this for my a6400,any more lens recomendations for wide angle and macro for a6400?for video use on gimbal?
Awesome video, just subscribed to you chanel. Would you recomend it for kiteboarding shooting from the coast? I have a6500
Yes it going to be great for sports of all kinds! Small and light just not the best lens in low light.
Superb lens for the price! I hope I could get a discount in the future.
I hope so too!
Great review ! Many thanks. If it is so good why do you only recommend it for beginners/intermediate photographers ? What would be your Sony top end equivalent, the 100-400mm GM?
The size and weight savings would benefit any user. For professional use however (where they demand the best quality or go into very niche segments) they have other options to consider. For serious bird shooters, for example, would find 350mm not long enough. They would often want to add teleconverters on top of their already long focal lengths for that. Similarly, for action shooters, they have other options to pair with their bodies (often a full frame camera). Pro photographers might also find a slightly bigger max aperture beneficial for that slight edge in terms of exposure.
Where did you get the lights from your wall? Creating blue light on your wall.
This lens is great for 4h video in APS-C MODE on the A7C.
Will it pair nicely with an A6000? Or should I wait til I upgrade to a newer body down the road to get the full value of the lens? (Say a6600)
Currently have an a6000 with a 30mm sigma f1.4 and Sony 18-135mm, and am looking for more zoom range for wildlife.
Great review! I just started looking at this lens for my a6400. I shoot a lot on a tripod. Do you think the lens is too heavy for the camera without a collar? Right now the heaviest non-collared lens I am using is the 18-135.
No its super light! You'll be good to go.
@@StefanMalloch thanks!
Must be also good for the a6300
Will it work with Image Stabilization switched on the lens and also IBIS on my a6500 or will I need to turn 1 of them off as having both on will counteract?
They will work together
Found one for $700 on eBay couldn't pass it up. What a great value at that price ; ))
Hi Stefan. Thx for awesome videos what you thing how that Sony E 70-350mm compared with tamron/sigma 100-400mm/150-500mm variants, if you think autofocus and sharpness?
All sharp and capable! The 70-350 is an aps-c lens and the other 2 are full frame.
70 300 4.5 -5.6 FE please!
This 70 350 vs the 70 200 f4 which one do you recommend for soccer sports photography ?? (good light condition I have a sony 6400)
I bought this lens yesterday (new) for 620€ + i got an 50€ gift card.
WHich brings the price down to less than 600€ :O
Im so hyped to take pcitures with this lens, but i still got to wait a few days until i can hold it in my hands.
Do you think it will perform well on my xe4 too?
Hi Stefan!
Is this lens sufficient for bird photography? I was also looking at some 100-400 or 150-600mm lenses; but all of those are at least 2-3 times heavier than this, so very difficult to click handheld for long time. My only concern is whether 350mm will be sufficient for shooting birds.
It will be just fine. Keep in mind it is a crop lens when the gm and 150-600 will be FF.
What will happen if I use it on my a7riii. Will it still work on the super 35 mode?
Could this work on a7riv ?
Thanks alot for this video. I own both a7iii and a6400. Price of 70200f4 $970 and 70350f4.5-5.3 $840 in HongKong so the price is not a concern. Focus speed and long end quality would be my main concern. Do you have experience on 70 200 f4 to compare with this lens? Which would focus faster, a7iii or a6400 in sports setting?
a6400 has better AF. The 70-200 F4 is a faster lens and constant aperture is nice but less reach. Both have linear focus motors so fast lens AF. Both great!
That's what am gonna get for my legendary a6000, you are not retiring yet my friend.
Thanks for the video. Great as usual. Can I ask a weird question? I have a7iii and i love bird photography. Would i get better results result buying the 100-400 and crop my images (as most likely i will have to) or use the £2000 to buy the a6400 and this lens? Basically which combo is sharper at 525mm equivelant?
Thanks friend. The 100-400 and a full frame is going to give you more detail but that apsc setup is no slouch. It really depends on what you need out of your pictures. I'm taking my time with my 100-400 review but it's amazing and I also love birds so you'll have to wait and see what I come up with. Hope that helps anyways. 😁
@@StefanMalloch I am looking forward to that review. I dont want to get 200-600 and hence I am wondering if the APSc set up will look sharper at 525mm equivalent compared to full frame at 400mm digitally cropped to 525mm in post
In my opinion the 100-400 is in a class of its own. I have both the 70-350 and the 100-400 (A6400 and A9) and if you want serious quality go with the 100-400. The image quality of the 70-350, though useably good, is really inferior to those images produced by the 100-400
@@tinplater I am really grateful for your reply and for sharing your experience.
@@tinplater sorry, I realize that this is a few months old, but I have a question. Have you tried shooting your 70-350 on your A9 in APS-C mode and if so how were the results?
I just wish it was 35(or less) to 350, when i'm looking for a zoom lens, i'm either looking for absolutely massive zoom like 600mm, or i'm looking for versatility like the 24-240
You can't have it all unfortunately. The bigger the focal range, the more sacrifice to IQ.
@@StefanMalloch Thats what i suspect, and i guess it wont be a fair comparrison either, because my 24240 is over 2 years old so it might have lost clarity in that time. But i'd like to see someone with better skill at reviewing/comparing than myself take a crack at it if they have the time. I also wish there was an apples to apples 24240 on APCS instead of using this lens meant for 35mm, who knows, maybe that extra light spilling off the edges of the sensor leads to even more distortion, maybe that cropped form factor exadurates the imperfections of this full frame lens not normally visible with a full frame sensor. I dont know, because i have nothing to directly compare this SEL24240 against
let's see a comparison vs RX10m4
Would you recommend the sigma 100-400mm or the 70-350mm on apsc camera??
Both good options. The 70-350 is a more reliable native experience that handles faster moving subjects better imo.
Can this len use for a7iii
It's not meant for full frame cameras. You could use it in crop mode but it's not recommended.
The only downside is the apature range but it's also an advantage. That's the reason why it is so small and light rather than faster and heavier for better low light which you get with faster f stops
True story bud, nailed it.
Not to mention affordable too. Just picked one up and is been amazing so far!
I currently use a Sony A7Sii. Would it be worth it to purchase this for my camera? I create short films.
Huge lens for APS-C sensor.
how is this midrange? the full frame equivalent is like 600m
Would this lens fit the Sony a6000 and the a6300 thanks for all the help great video
Yes it a crop lens so both!
Have you tried this lens Michael with the A6000 yet?
I recently purchase a sony alpha 7II, as an amateur i like shoot with zoom lenses, which lenses you recommend?. I recently watch your review on the Sony 70-200 F4 and that looks nice but expensive for my budget.
What do you shoot?
Stefan Malloch mostly street photography, some times landscape, it’s just a hobby but I want good pictures. I go with my friends to a place and everything interesting that stand in front of the camera gets a shot 😁. I will like to acquire a versatile lens
@@carlosmanuelpeguerogomez2692 The most versatile zoom lens for Sony full frame is the 24-105. Tele zooms are expensiv. Tamron is releasing a 70-180 soon, it will cost about 1200 US$.
TVe200 yes they are quite expensive, I think that I will go for the 24-105.
Hi...Do you think Sony 70-350 or Tamron 70-300 is better for sports photos? Thank you
Sony will be better.
What do you mean that a 350mm is a 525mm equivalent?
Would you recommend this lens for full frame shooter?
No. Its an apsc lens. Buy a lens that is designed for you camera to take advantage of your big sensor, otherwise you may as well shoot apsc.
Hi Stefan, could this work with a6500? Hope to hear from you! Great review!
Any Sony SEL lens will work with your A6500.
So what about pairing with an a7IV when weight is the primary issue?
This is an APS-C lens so that would be a pass for me.
I have this lens can give me the suggestion which body is suitable for this perfectly either in Sony or any other brands (I am looking in budget)
A6100, 6400 or 6600 preferably.
What lense is recommended for sports action and portraits
This one for sports. Portrait looking for a 35mm or 50mm Prime, or just use the 16-55 kit lens. (if spending more money the G Master 16-55 F2.8)
Do you think this lens would be ok for moon shots?
On a 24MP aps-c camera, the moon won’t fill up the frame at all (just slightly bigger than 20% of the image height) If you don’t need a really hi-res image, the result after cropping is not too bad. I also found that with 2x clear image zoom, the image has better details compared to just the optical zoom + crop.
I just picked up this lens for my a6600 body. Can you explain how to use the digital equivalent of 525mm vs the 350mm?
105-525mm on full frame cameras
@@Aneta87 thank you for your comment, I never thought about the use on full frame!
Can I use this for the full frame Sony a7 III?
Only in crop mode.
Don´t you miss the tripod collar?
No it's so light you fouled hand told it all day!
Stefan, nice vids on your channel. May I ask: 1) Since they removed the focus limiter switch on this lens (vs 70-300mm), does the A6100 have a way to change this ? I haven't yet found it in the manual.
2) I have a Sony VCL-DH1758 1.7x post-lens Tele Converter (58 dia). Will the 70-350 (67 dia) accept the mount of the 1.7x tele with a 67-58mm step down ring ? I don't mind a little vignetting since I do post.
Must be hard to add size specs in normal units.
How would this do with landscape photography?
I like doing landscape with telephoto personally. Its a great all around lens.
@@StefanMalloch i appreciate the feedback, Amazon has it on the pay monthly scheme so im really tempted!
Great reviews. I'm thinking of buying this lens. Currently, it's $898. What would you think a sale price would be? I'm able to get an edu discount through B&H for $827.
It that usd? I picked it up for $899 cdn. Great lens!
@@StefanMalloch No, it's brand new. When it comes to lenses, I don't buy them use. I can airways change the body but keep the lenses so I prefer buying them new
This lens is far cheaper in Canada than the US at the moment: $999CA = $750US in Canada vs $899US in the US. I believe this is due to the tariffs on items made in China from Trump's trade war. And unfortunately Canadian online shops are saying they can't ship it to the US due to manufacturer restrictions. And you can't even take a road trip up to Toronto or Vancouver and buy it in person because of the Covid-19 border closure.
After selling crap lenses for Apsc for years to rip of customers they release a ok lense. Thank you.
I wanted to ask if the lens is still worth it in 2022? I just got the a6400 and want to buy a good telephotolens.
Still a great lens!
Thanks!
damn it costs only 780€ here in Germany :O
How dose it perform on the a7r series in crop mode
Can't confirm and personally would never do it.
@@StefanMalloch Really interested by your review. Thanks. Why not use APS-C eases with FF bodies which have an APS-C mode? Thanks for your insights.
What do Professionals require which this lens does not have or do?
A professional will usually rely on faster and more durable lenses. This is a very capable lens and can produce professional results though.
Can i use it with the a7ii??
Only in crop mode which I don't recommend.
Which lens do u recommend for a7ii that has similar zoom range as this one??
Glad you said this not a lens for video. At that point I stopped viewing. What telephoto one is for video?
This lens with a A6000. Your opinion?
Its a great lens but will be a bit limited by your cameras AF.
Stefan Malloch in what way?
Stefan Malloch have you tried this lens with the A6000? Or anyone else you may know?
Use it on full frame. I do. Don't be afraid to break the 'rules' ;) Also, the word 'professional' only applies to your art making abilities. Any good enough lens is good enough for anything.
105-525 is a midrange zoom????? It's an insane zoom!
Instead I hope in a cheap telephoto lens (third parts) for my a7iii!
G Series. Midrange. Not G Master, not non G.
@@StefanMalloch ah you was speaking about the price range... Even in that case, i don't think that g master lenses are optically superior than g series lenses. It's more a specs brand, usually g master lenses are faster, heavier and sports a metallic body, they are more professional oriented, but i wouldn't call a g series lens midrange, because they are high grade lenses too. My two cents.
That slow to slower aperture is a huge con. I think a complete review of this lens needs to address that and the resulting limitations
It's not that big of a deal to be honest. 1/3 of a stop of light isint astronomical and if you're pixel peeping you're probably not shooting on an aps-c anyways. Who's going to pay thousands of dollars for an fast apsc telephoto? Just my thoughts..
@@StefanMalloch The problem is not only that it goes up to F6.3, it is slow even at 70mm. I consider to buy the Tamron 70-180 instead and use it on my A6500. F2.8 is two full stops faster than F5.6.
I assume Sony wanted to keep this under $1000 and I totally get that, but the 55-210, similar aperture, is not good in less than ideal light and the a6XXX series cameras are not good at high ISO so I'd be very surprised if this combo was good in non-ideal light and I'm disappointed you didn't explore that in your review
Indeed, this particular lens is not good for dusk and sunset without a tripod. But it 's a trade off against weight and size. I have been shooting with this lens on my A6300. I also have a Canon 5D4 and 100-400mm w/ 1.4x TC to compare. The latter set up is much bigger and heavier but will cost you over twice as much. Its image quality at higher ISO is at least 1-2 stops better than the Sony setup. The slow aperture of this lens does drive up the ISO very quickly if you are using Auto ISO at 1/1000 sec which is what I typically use for birds in flight. For relatively static objects, you can reduce the shutter speed somewhat and lower the ISO. Still I 've found myself shooting at 350mm with at least ISO200 and sometimes even ISO400 for a static scene handheld. The lens OS stablization is not as effective as my Canon rig since the whole Sony setup is relatively light. Panning is the worst and seemingly the lens' OS doesn't seem to compensate for that. Perhaps I am missing IBIS on the A6300 to make the stablization more effective. Essentially, this lens a compromise if your priorities are weight and size. However, this is a good lens for travel and hiking. It certainly beats the 55-210 in terms of image quality.
Most of the use cases for this lens is outdoors so not a big issue for a hobbyist.
Wouldn't call it a mid-range telephoto, 105-525 mm FF equivalent
Epilepsy warning at the start lol
Darn cops...!
At almost a thousand dollars for this type of lens ($300+/- in the DSLR glory days) you didn't make that a con especially for an APS-C lens?
It's a bit pricey but still under 1000$ I'm on a budget. Wish it was about 500$.
Lucky you tamron is releasing that
Well, you don't hear a Sony lens being accused of being "too good for the money" every day. While I'd like to have this lens, I think it's overpriced, just like most Sony lenses, new or second-hand. The only "amazing value" APS-C telephoto lens that I know of (and have used) is Canon's EF-S 55-250mm IS STM.
great lens but i already have the 70-200 f4 fullframe lens, otherwise would buy this :>
Nice! Its a great lens.
Stefan Malloch which one is better in your opinion
But this len can zoom to 525mm @24MP on APS-C versus 300mm @24MP and 10MP on A7 series full frame on 70-200mm.
