The test match we (Aus) just played against the West Indies (Windies) was awesome. It came down to 8 runs. The Windies are a young team and they played absolutely magnificent cricket!
And it was an excellent example of the test format creating a nail-biting end!
Great example of some fantastic cricket.

You'd be surprised how many Americans know cricket. I'm a baseball fan mainly but cricket has made itself faster than baseball in the last 5 years. The cricket ball is rolling now in usa. Minor league cricket, major league cricket....wow....america. Baseball is pedestrian in comparison nowadays. An odd turn of events. And you better get to NYC, Dallas or Lauderdale for a game dude....now c'mon...if I can learn this crazy game then so can you and a live stream from the stadium....that's gold dust or maybe a pure nugget

In cricket, runs are scored frequently and wickets are taken occasionally, so the celebrations are the opposite to baseball.
A 5-day test match could be thought of like a best-of-5 playoff series on consecutive days with cumulative scores and no changes to the players involved. Add to that playing outside from 11am-6pm in 100 degrees on a surface that deteriorates.
Other good videos for you would be: Cricket explained for baseball fans, Shane Warne best wickets, best direct hit run outs.

"Test" Cricket (the 5 day game) is the only true Cricket, it's for purists (like me) it's the original form of Cricket and was around for many, many decades before the other two, shorter forms of Cricket which were created for making money. The shorter forms can be exciting, I admit that but it just seems a little bit like something is missing. (to the Cricket tragic).

The hilarious part of Americans going nuts over a 5 day game is you guys have no problem watching golf tournaments that last for 4 days or tennis tournaments that last for 2 weeks! Test matches are the only real cricket. T20 and ODI's place restrictions on the fielding positions and the number of overs a bowler can bowl and the types of deliveries they can bowl effectively taking away much of the tactical play in favor of big hits. ODI's are barely bearable but T20 is trash.

You're so right about the drama of a test match building and building to excruciating levels.
When it comes down to the last couple of hours on the 5th day, the bowling team trying ALL the tricks to get the last outs, the batters under incredible pressure trying to get it over the line... it's the best finish in Sports.
Course, they're not all that close. But when they are... phew!

A game lasting for several days shouldn't be weird to Americans. It happens in plenty of sports - golf tournaments, cycle racing and so on. Think of the World Series, functionally one game even if split into individual games. I was in Boston one time when the Sox were in the WS. People on the subway would be discussing the state of play. The same in a test match, you can talk about how it's going day by day, and analyse the strategies and tactics. Also, tests are genuine 'World' - matches between different countries. Have a look at the highlights of the recent India vs England match, it was a great match. If you like it you should be able to catch the other four in the series (this was the first).

As an Australian I usually recommend for Americans curious about cricket to watch a t20 game because it's similar in time to a baseball game and is usually pretty aggressive in batting due to it's limited overs. The Australian Big Bash League just ended but India's premier league which has players from all over the world is starting up on the 23rd of March. Then from there move onto One Day cricket because there's still plenty of the aggressive batting from t20s but there's also elements of the more slower tactical playing that is from Test matches. Then lastly try and get into the more traditional Test cricket by watching something like the Ashes between Australia and England or a test match featuring India.

Cricket is mostly played in former British empire countries.
The strongest cricket teams are Australia, India, England, South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.
There are also a group of "2nd tier" cricket nations such as Bangladesh, Zimbanwe, Afghanistan, Kenya, and (surprisingly) The Netherlands, who sometimes make it to the world cup.

One thing I've noticed as a difference between Cricket and other bat/ball sports is that, if you think a Batsman is "out" you have to ask the Umpire, he won't just automatically call "out" or whatever, (Unless of course if the Batsman is "Bowled" out which is obvious to everyone) if you don't ask the Umpire, play will just continue. We call this "appealing" to the Umpire. Every time a player thinks the Batsman is "out" he (or the whole team) will "appeal" to the Umpire. Sometimes this leads to the whole team screaming at once for the Umpire to make a decision. You don't see that in any other sport.

    • @guyfaux3978

Baseball pitchers pitch the ball. .. this is, they THROW it.
It is illegal in Cricket to throw the ball at a batsman.
In Cricket, the bowler must BOWL the ball with a straight arm .....straight from the vertical position as it rotates, until it is released.
Back and spine injuries result from the bowling action for medium pace to fast bowlers.......spin bowlers learn to ignore severe calluses on their fingers, but can suffer from shoulder injuries and wrist spinners can damage the arm / shoulder socket.......a most painful injury.
Extreme pace is the highlight of the game........the ball travelling at speeds in excess of 95 mph while changing direction in the air and again off the wicket........and maybe aimed at the batsmans head.
One exception to the above was Shane Warne, bowling wrist spin.
I recommend you watch any of the "best " ball videos about Shane..... doesnt matter if the are the best or not......they will still amaze you and make you question your knowledge of physics. lol

The length of the match does NOT reflect the seriousness of the match.

  • @digimont
    @digimont 8 місяців тому +1

There's basically 3 different type of delivery.. swing (the ball deviates in the air), seam (the ball deviates off the pitch, specifically because of how it landed - i.e. it landed on the seam (the stitching) - examples the last 2 in the video) and spin (the bowler imparts spin on the ball to get it to deviate in the direction they intend). Then there are variations in speed, variations in length (how close or far from the batsman it lands)..and all kinds of combinations of all of the above! You will hear the term "scrambled seam" a lot these days, this describes holding and delivering the ball in such a way that the deviation off the pitch is a lottery. While this obviously makes it harder for the batsman to predict...there is a price to pay...it deteriorates the condition of the ball a lot faster. This is an important consideration in cricket, especially in Test cricket, where the same ball is used for 80 overs and so needs to be looked after. If one side gets scuffed up or loses its shine, it may swing more, but if both sides get scuffed, it stops swinging at all. The balls soften from repeated impacts on pitch, batsman and when hit into the stands the concrete or seating. When they go soft, they lose bounce (which makes some bowlers more effective, while others become less effective). The art of bowling can take a lifetime to wrap your head around, as there are a lot more variables than in baseball.

A golf tournament can last four days, so what is strange about a game of cricket lasting five?

    • @OmniSportsInternational
      @OmniSportsInternational  7 місяців тому

The concept itself is not strange, the reason it's unique from my perspective is that all of the most popular sports in America don't do that typically. The ones that do like Golf, Bowling, etc. are not very popular anymore, and some Americans wouldn't even consider them sports, and just games (I disagree and consider it sport)
Also, in golf each day is its own distinct round whereas with cricket it can stop in the middle of an inning that feels different to Americans since barring weather you'd see a full competitive round from start to finish as a spectator and in cricket it could be the same inning for days.

Did anyone else notice that Ninh called a run out, hit wicket?
By the way for our friends who are new to the game, hit wicket is when you hit the stumps with your bat or a part of your body or protective equipment. It is rare.
You can also get out, handling the ball or be given out obstructing the field. Even rarer!
Lastly a batter can be timed out if they don't get to the wicket in a certain time. I think it is a shorter time for T20 cricket.
I would only go to Ninh Li for a sports video if there are no other ones available.. not hating him, it's just that the other ones are going to be by someone who actually knows about the particular sport and are not just putting out videos on each sport.
I think Ninh is a good resource for people who know nothing about a sport and quickly want to learn about it and it's rules.

The terminology can be somewhat confusing. But this is the quick reference:
The "bowler" "delivers" the ball, it "pitches" (bounces) on the "pitch", and aims to hit the "stumps" to dislodge the "bails".
The "wicket" is the prepared set-up which can include the constructed stump/bail combination as well as the surface of the pitch the ball bounces on. The very rough idea is that, if the bowler disrupts this set-up, then the batter is out. Hence the term "taking a wicket" or "losing a wicket", means getting a batter out.
There's a couple of good UA-cam videos out there of cricket for baseball fans, which may help smooth over some of these differences.

These are all pace bowlers, or quicks. They will have 4 main different styles of ball. 1 - swing; the ball curves in the air, due to one side of the ball being rough. 2 - cutters; the ball changes direction after the bounce, due to the bowler’s initial grip being offset. 3 - Yorker; the bowler lands the ball right up at the batsman’s feet. 4 - bouncer; the bowler bowls it hard into the pitch, causing the ball to bounce up at the batsman’s head.

If both teams are dressed in white you are probably seeing a test match (5 day format). There was one the other day that my brother had tickets to for day 2 and 3. The whole thing was over by lunch time on the 3rd day so there's no guarantee it'll go for 5 days. Although longer and slower the game going for 5 days can mean that the match wasn't a walkover. Also (and this is just one of the things that as a child in the summer made me angry with my dad and brothers constantly watching cricket) after 5 days it is not unusual for a game to draw. Incomprehensible to a kid who just suffered through 5 days of cricket commentary.
On another note - there is a Shane Warne tutorial video out there - he was a spin bowler (different from swing) that was quite good at his craft.

  • @mikeythehat6693
    @mikeythehat6693 8 місяців тому +1

The different textures on the ball are created by the players and probably aren't as dramatic as you are imagining, although they do have sometimes dramatic effects. The new ball starts off all shiny but will become rougher as the game goes on. The bowling team are allowed to polish the ball, and so they will (almost always) just polish one side, (this is what they're doing when you see them rubbing it on their pants leg) which leads to one side of the ball becoming rough while the other side is all shiny. This can enable a "Swing" bowler to move the ball sideways through the air as the difference in texture leads to an aerodynamic effect. The ball moving sideways through the air can be very confusing to Batsmen.

Don’t watch a whole game, but for highlights try:
1 - Steve Smith’s 2019 Ashes - he touched god in this series
2 - Glenn Maxwell’s 201* against Afghanistan in the World Cup
3- Shane Warne’s career highlights, but especially the Gatting ball
    4- Mitch Johnson’s 2014-15 Ashes wickets
    5- Boland’s 6/7
These are all games in which Australia was involved (I’m an Australian, so most familiar with our results), but also worth checking out highlights of the Windies in the 80’s and 90’s, especially their bowling with Ambrose, Richards, etc. Also watch Brian Lara with a bat in hand.

The idea behind an lbw is to stop a batsman from simply using their legs to protect the stumps. They must use the bat instead. It's not really interfering with the ball - an lbw is usually the result of good bowling or poor batting, with the batsman missing the ball with the bat and it hitting the legs. Technically it doesn't have to be legs: any part of the body (other than hands, which are considered part of the bat) can result in an lbw if the ball would have hit the stumps. There are a few other technical rules about lbw, which makes it probably the most controversial and debated thing in cricket, and the point at which most umpiring mistakes are made.
One thing you may have missed: an illegal delivery (no-ball or wide) doesn't just give the batting team a run. A bowler must deliver 6 legal deliveries per over, so they have to bowl another ball. Any runs the batsman scored off the illegal delivery count, and a batsman cannot get out off a no-ball. That's also why they bowl with a straight arm: a bent arm is throwing and is illegal.
If a player were to interfere with the ball hitting the stumps by using their hand in a deliberate act, that would be out under the rule "Obstructing the Field". The video lists handling the ball as a way to get out, but this was recently merged with obstructing the field, so there are now just 9 ways of getting out.
Be extremely careful with showing games from the Indian Premier League. They're notorious for copyright strikes. You should be fine with most stuff from Australia and England. Check out Australia's Big Bash League highlights.
There are some full length games of the Carribean Premier League on youtube. This is a T20 (twenty over) tournament, so games are about 3 hours. Iirc, the US are co-hosting the upcoming tournament with the West Indies, a group of carribean nations that play cricket like one country internationally. Their test team just pulled off an upset against Australia today. It ended after four days, here's some highlights: ua-cam.com/video/w3r-dS3rNeo/v-deo.html
Just a quick heads up on the score: while scores are usually presented as score then wickets lost (eg 130-4, meaning the batting team scored 130 runs and had four batsmen get out), in Australian broadcasts the scores are reversed: wickets then runs, so the score would read 4-130 instead. As to the speed, you'll see miles per hour in England, but elsewhere it will be km/h.
The texture on the ball is not natural but is added through wear and tear, and the team shining one side of the ball by rubbing it on their clothing (more extreme methods are forbidden). This causes the air to flow quicker over the smooth (shiny) side of the ball then the rough, causing the ball to curve in the air. The other main type of bowling is spin bowling. They spin the ball so that it changes direction when it bounces off the ground.

If a ball hits the wicket at the bowling end, the batsman is out only if it has come in contact with any part of the body of a member of the fielding team, mostly the bowler.
